Curriculum Overview Autumn Term 2017 Year 1 Neverland As sportsmen, we will be preparing ourselves for our Christmas production and will link our dances to our dance unit. We will be looking at the book ‘Giraffes can’t dance’. We will look at some of the dances that are mentioned in the book and learn a few of the moves from each of the different dances, from the waltz, the tango and many more. We will then lead into looking at In PSHE we will be thinking about the values seen throughout the school. We will begin with eco- friendliness and move on to gratitude. We will implement and discuss these values weekly in our circle time sessions. During our circle time sessions, we will also be looking at ‘Getting on and falling out’. Here we will discuss what makes a good friend and why we may fall out with our friends. We will be looking at how we can In RE we will be learning about the Christianity festival of Advent. We will look at the Christmas story and the true meaning behind Christmas. Year 1Neverland

As sportsmen, we will be preparing ourselves for our Christmas production and will link our dances to our dance unit. We will be looking at the book ‘Giraffes can’t dance’. We will look at some of the dances that are mentioned in the book and learn a few of the moves from each of the different dances, from the waltz, the tango and many more. We will then lead into looking at the dances for the Christmas production.

In PSHE we will be thinking about the values seen throughout the school. We will begin with eco-friendliness and move on to gratitude. We will implement and discuss these values weekly in our circle time sessions. During our circle time sessions, we will also be looking at ‘Getting on and falling out’. Here we will discuss what makes a good friend and why we may fall out with our friends. We will be looking at how we can resolve situations with our friends more independently.

In RE we will be learning about the Christianity festival of Advent. We will look at the Christmas story and the true meaning behind Christmas. We will explore how Christians prepare for this festival and look at how the church changes its decorations and the order of service throughout December in preparation for the ‘coming’ of Christ.

This term you can help your child at home by:

In maths we will continue to use a number of resources to develop our numeracy skills. At the beginning of the half term we will recap our knowledge of place value and look at how this can help us solve more complex problems. We will also begin to consolidate our understanding of addition and subtraction and look at application of these skills in real life contexts. We will also be looking at telling the time. First of all we will look at knowing the days of the week and look at how this fits into a week and then a year. The children will learn to order day, months and times in a variety of orders. We will then move on to telling the time and looking at what the hands on the clock are there for. We will look at how the numbers We will be solving a variety of word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Throughout the half term we will also be learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

In English we will be exploring fiction and non-fiction writing. We will be look at instructional writing first and looking at the features of instructions and how important these features are in forming instructions. We will be doing lots of work on our oral sentence work and looking at how we can speak in clear sentences and to make sure that we have all the words into the correct places including using a conjunction ‘and’. we begin writing our own instructions we will be looking at giving oral instructions and looking at the language that we need to make sure that our instructions are clear.

We will then move on to our story writing and look at how we can describe mythical creatures such as mermaids and fairies and how we can include these into our own stories with a beginning, middle and end.

We will continue with our daily phonic lessons and will be looking at all the alternative sounds and looking closely at any spelling patterns to make us better spellers. In these sessions, we will have the chance to play phonics games to make sentences and also to listen to audio stories. We will also continue to practise our handwriting using our joined-up style (cursive).

As scientists we will be looking at animals. We will be looking at classifying animals around us and learning how we can group animals into their different groups (birds, fish, mammals and reptiles) We will then look at the animals in our local area to see if we can see any of the animals we have been learning about. Once we have learnt about the animals that we can see we will then move on to looking at animals that wake up as we go to bed.

As design technologists we will be developing our planning and design skills. We will be using Hooks plan to capture Tinkerbell and looking at how we can improve his model. We will test a variety of materials and which materials would be best suited for the job. We will then build our models and then test them out- but not on real fairies.

This half-term our topic is the exciting ‘Neverland. In this Topic we will be transported to fantasy lands and looking at how characters are seen as good and evil we will then explore this even further during our PSHE and philosophy lesson. We will also look the myths behind fairies and we will make our own fairy garden and fairy traps.

We will also have a fun week for multi-cultural week where we will be looking at comparing both human and physical landscapes with India and England.

In Computing we will be learning the process of logging on to both Fronter and Purple mash and how to navigate around both of these virtual learning platforms. We will also look at how to code. We will be looking at online sprites and looking at how to give directions to them using simple code. We will then move this up to making our own coded game.

As geographers we will be developing our knowledge about the world. We will look at atlases and naming the 5 oceans and the 7 continents. We will look at reading the points of a compass like Captain Hook and the pirates and then using this to give directions on a map
