Description
The Hairstylist Certificate program prepares students for employment in the hair industry by providing them with authentic learning experiences to develop the knowledge, skills, and professionalism to be successful in the industry. Students are required to complete salon work experiences in terms 2 and 3, which will provide insight into the general salon functions, duties, roles, and responsibilities of a stylist. This program will lead students to the completion of the ITA RedSeal Endorsement. Upon successful completion of both the Hairstylist Certificate and the Esthetics Certificate, students are eligible to receive a Cosmetology Diploma at VCC.
Admission Requirements
Grade 10 completion and 18 years of age, or high school graduation English proficiency requirement: - English 10, or - Academic IELTS 5.5 (no band less than 5.0), or - TOEFL iBT 68, or - Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test: Listening 7, Speaking 6, Reading 6, Writing 4

Career Prospects
Well-trained hairstylists are in constant demand in every community. Graduates specializing in Hairstylist Certificate who have obtained their provincial license are qualified to secure employment in large or small salons or open their own business.
Term 1 Hairstylist Foundation 1 (17 weeks)
Tools and salon environment, health and safety standards, and infection control
Prepare clients for services, scalp massage, analyze, shampoo and condition the scalp and hair
Hair cutting techniques and terminology of elevated and nonelevated haircuts
Wet hair styling, styling techniques, dry finishing, thermal tools, and comb-out techniques
Colouring hair and pre-colour analysis
Permanent waving, pre-permanent wave analysis, perming solutions, and hair wrapping
Assess client needs, analyze face shapes, and recommend services, timelines and pricing.
Identify the structure and functions of the skin and the composition of hair
Industry expectations, professional behaviour and communication skills with clients and co-workers
Courses
Classes are generally held three days a week, either from Monday to Wednesday, or from Thursday to Saturday, depending on availability. Class times are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for three days a week. Class times are subject to change.
Important: International students are not eligible to register in apprenticeship courses at VCC beyond those included in their program.
Tuition fees and other fees are approximate and subject to change due to yearly increases without notice. Students will be required to pay
increased rates if the fees change at any time during the period of enrolment in the program. Tuition and other fees are payable on a con-
tinuous basis based on the courses in each program and when those courses are scheduled.
Application and assessment fees are non-refundable.

Total program fees include tuition fees, college initiative fees, student union fees, extended health and medical insurance fees, U-Pass, graduation fees, campus resource fees and other fees payable to VCC. A current kit must be purchased on the first day of the program through the VCC Bookstore.
Term 2 Hairstylist Foundation 2 (18 weeks)
New cutting techniques using the razor and specialty shears
Texturizing methods, such as thinning, slithering, point cutting, slicing, and razor rotation
Styling wet or dry hair, long hair preparation and styling
Developing creativity and awareness of acceptable finishing results and client suitability
Multi-dimensional foil highlights and lowlights, virgin bleach application, lightening retouch, and toner services
Permanent wave wrapping techniques, specialty wraps, Keratin hair smoothing system and hair relaxers
Salon and spa business operations (marketing, business plans, financial requirements, rental agreements, insurance, etc.)
Salon work experience
Term 3 Hairstylist Foundation 3 (6 weeks)
Fundamentals of specialized services such as wigs, hairpieces, and extensions
Composition of wigs, hairpieces and extensions, the measuring criteria for fitting, maintenance and cleaning techniques
Review career goals, develop self-marketing portfolio, practice interview techniques, and create a resume and cover letter
Prepare for the final VCC practical exam and Industry Training Authority (ITA) Hairstylist theory exam
