Dear Friends, February 26 - March 5, 2011 I will be a member of a small group of eight Johns Hopkins Nursing students selected to travel with our Public Health faculty to Jeremie, Haiti. Jeremie is a remote and somewhat isolated city on the southern north coast of Haiti. Located approximately 170 miles from the Haitian capital of Port- au-Prince, it is not easily accessed on account of the mountainous terrain and little to no established roadways. This city is one of the hardest places to access which has presented challenges to the people of Jeremie even before the earthquake. The food crisis, scarcity of resources, natural disasters, and now cholera have left Jeremie in dire need for aid. Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has close ties with the community of Jeremie through a long standing partnership with The Haitian Health Foundation. Our group will be working with the HHF to provide: • Well Child care including vaccines • Pre and Post-natal care for women • Tetanus vaccinations and anemia screening for adolescents • Health education on cholera prevention, infection control, nutrition, and intimate partner violence • Comfort care for terminally ill adults and children at the local hospice We are currently raising funds to purchase supplies such as: • Microcuvettes for anemia screening. This basic, but essential screening will cost $1 per person. • Vitamins, iron supplements, and protein-rich food • Paper & office supplies for health education and clinical activities. • Translator fees and transportation costs for travel to remote villages.
