the Journey BeGan in haitiIf you want to see the soul of a culture, look at its art. You will see traditions passed on generation to generation. You will see their natural resources, their unique hand. Most importantly, you will see the beauty of the culture’s history and the hope of its future. Such is the case with the artisans of Haiti.
Urban Zen is on a mission: to help develop, market and present the work of Haiti artisans to the western world. As an ambassador to the preservation of Haiti’s artistry and expression, Donna Karan and our partners have been going down to Haiti at every opportunity, working one-on-one with the artists and manufacturers. From carved stone and horn to wooden bowls, handcrafted beadwork created from recycled materials, ironwork and metal scraps transformed into chandeliers of light and beauty, steel drums etched and cut into tableaus, paper maché handbags, tobacco leaves sensuously wrapped in curvaceous vases - the elements and the artwork of Haiti are critical to preserving the craft and the beauty of the island’s culture.
Through our commitment to Urban Zen Foundation’s preservation of culture initiative, we have created a model of philanthropy and commerce that allows you to help support the artisan communities of Haiti by providing jobs, income and a sense of cultural pride. Join us in honoring the country’s rich past and unique culture and building a bridge to a connected and sustainable future for Haiti.
