It's inter-esting to note that IGNAK has graduatedfrom Carleton University and is considereda potential leader of his people.

Kushmier's company, of which he is soleowner, is based in Toronto.

GOOD NOISE STRETCHINGFOR NAT'L RECOGNITIONThe Montreal -based Good Noise label distri-buted by Polydor, is suffering from growingpains which could create a solid nationalimage for their artists. Initial release groupwas Man Made and their single "CountryCompany" (GN 1001). With several stationsshowing an interest in the deck, Bill Horan,Good Noise promo, has reserviced the singlebolstered by telephone calls to programmerscoast to coast. The designated "B" side,"Keep On Moving", a rocker, was picked upby Quebec stations and quickly made it toNo. 1 at CKLM Montreal. Listener reactionto the group has been so intense, the stationwill go with the "Country" side shortly.Man Made's album, has now been releasedin Belgium/Dureco, Australia/Good Thyme, and in Japan/Nippon. As well the album isreceiving airplay on the BBC in London,Radio Luxembourg, Japan and the Far EastNetwork.

New album product will include the label'ssalute to the big bands. The set, "The HotelOrchestra" (GN 5003) is being previewedthrough special singles which have beenmailed to Polydor salesmen, retail storesand radio stations across Canada. Horanreports good initial response from MORprogrammers.

Also on tap is an album from Tim Ryan,"The Runner" (GN 5002). A native of SaultSte. Marie, Ontario, singer/songwriter Ryanrepresented Canada last year at the TokyoSong Festival with "Sweet December". Healso picked up two Yamaha Canada song -writing Awards in Ottawa, the latter partof the year, for "Great Northern Road". Bothcompositions are included on the album.

The "December" cut was culled as a singleand is being released in Japanese, French,Spanish and German versions. The Ryanversion is expected to be released in Belgium,Holland, Luxembourg, Australia, NewZealand and England. Unfortunately Cana-dian programmers have turned "thumbsdown" on the single.

CBC UNDER ATTACK AT CRTCLICENSE RENEWAL HEARINGMonday, Feb. 18, marked the first day ofthe CRTC hearings on the renewal of theCBC's licenses and the people's watchdogswere really howling this time around. Manypeople felt sorry for the poor conglomeratewith the constant barrage of criticism thatseems to hound it. But, when something isdesigned to perform such an importantfunction as the CBC was, and when the mon-ster is gobbling up as many tax dollars asit does (120 million worth), criticism is notonly understandable but also necessary. Inprivate enterprise, competition helps keepthings efficient but in government, publicpressure is the tool. The big critic that hadbeen making all the waves came in the formof the Committee on Television, a voluntarygroup of seven members involved in the artsand media. The attack on the CBC wasfunctional in that the public and the CRTCwere forced to stand back a little fartherand take a good look at the operation but,

. . . the prophets of doom, the messengers ofmediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who havealready demonstrated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership."

as it turned out, more critics seemed to berising against the COT than the CBC.

Jack Miller of the Toronto Star, one suchcritic, pointed out that the COT, in criticiz-ing the cheap appearance of many CBCproductions, "ignored the fact that a lot ofthe shows are done on the cheap becausethe CRTC has ordered the CBC to pushnetwork expansion, an order that has seenthe CBC spend more money on hardwarethat it would have preferred to put intoprogram budgets." And on the CBC-TVpublic affairs programs being unadventurous, the COT "ignores the fact that the sameman (in charge of CBC-TV public affairs) ishead of the English radio network where

OVERDRIVE'S "RIDE"GAINS ACROSS BOARDThe Ontario tour of Bachman -Turner Over-drive has proved to be a convenient vehiclefor the pushing of their latest Mercurysingle, "Let It Ride". The deck has nowbroken nationally and would appear to beheading for the top of the national chart.Every major market across the country hasnow playlisted or charted the single witha strong supporting action from the break-out markets. Polydor's Richard Glanville -Brown sees more potential in this singlethan in their "Blue Collar" deck and is of theopinion that "Ride" will "establish themas a major chart single group".

It had been reported in last week's RPMthat the BTO album "II" had sold inexcess of 150,000 copies with their firstalbum now topping the 250,000 unitssold mark. These are U.S. figures.

public affairs has become so wildly adven-turous that he will be in court over the wayone of his radio shows responded to a recentcourt order". Miller also commented on theCOT suggestion to place all CBC productionand broadcasting facilities under the controlof a government department to minimizeOttawa political intimidation, stating thatthe move would only make the CBC subjectto far more political pressure. Eugene Hall-man, vice-president for TV public affairsand former president George Davidsonseemed to be taking the brunt of the flackfrom the COT, but Miller pointed out thatDavidson has been long gone and Hallmanis soon going.

Knowlton Nash, director of CBC-TV infor-mation programs made an impressive come-back to COT criticism: "We are accused ofhaving in the National News a vast numberof news items taken from the Americannetworks. The fact is, we carry perhaps twominutes or sometimes two and a halfminutes on the average of such materialevery night. The CBC is attacked for beingdominated by American programs. That's analmost unbelievable imbecility. Our program-ming is about 70% Canadian and in theinformation category it is 95% Canadian. Some say we do too much programming fromToronto and ignore the rest of the country.Again this is simply not true. The CBC isperhaps the most decentralized broadcastingorganization in the world. Of all our televis-ion production, two thirds is produced in theregions. The CBC is criticized for not givingenough opportunities to Canadian actorsor performers or writers or filmmakers. TheCBC spends something like $8 million ayear on commentators, actors, and perform-ers. I believe private stations in Canada puttogether spend well under $1 million."

Certainly much attention has been drawn tothe CBC through these criticisms and cer-tainly the CBC deserves criticism but it isunfortunate the main critics this timearound didn't research the matter as well asthey might have.

MONTREAL CREATESMAJOR BREAKTHROUGHFOR COCKBURNConsidered as a major breakthrough forBruce Cockburn, his Feb. 19 concert atMontreal's Maisonneuve Theatre was com-pletely sold out. The concert was arrangedthrough Roy Cooper (Premier Promotions).

The Cockburn concert was a major coup forthe Ottawa area singer -- his first concertin the province of Quebec. The 1450 seattheatre is one of the most up-to-date andintimate theatres in the province, whichlent itself nicely to Cockburn's easy goingand quiet approach. Appearing as secondguitar on the gig was Cockburn's producerGene Martynec, who also produces EdwardBear. The local press was also sold onCockburn with the Gazette's Dave Billingtoncomparing the True North artist with PaulSimon.

Bernie Finkelstein, who worked closelywith Cooper and Columbia's promo rep,Gil. Audi, was impressed with the Montrealacceptance of Cockburn. The house, withticket prices at $5.00, $4.00, and $3.00 wasmade up of 50% Quebecois, making Cock-burn one of the first Canadian acts to

AUSSIE'S SISTER MEADDOING IT WITH "PRAYER"A rock -bible thumping single, "The Lord'sPrayer" by Australia's Sister Janet Mead, has taken the North American continentby storm. The A&M deck was tagged "asmash hit" at KMPC Los Angeles after anairing created a switchboard fiasco. Severalcallers registered complaints, a sure firesign of a hit, while others wanted to knowmore about the record. Local retailerscouldn't be happier as their cash registersjingled and A&M were convinced of theirtest marketing success.

A&M's network of promotion people inCanada were quick to set a promo campaignin motion with a rush release of the single,a couple of days after the U.S. release.CKLW brought the single home in theirCanada/U.S. market while major and break-out stations across Canada completed thechain of events.

Sister Janet, a former music student, enteredan Australian convent at the age of seven-teen, continuing her music studios andmajoring in piano performance. A chancemeeting with the Van Der Sman family ledto a five year musical association, withSister Janet and the family working togetheron the full circle of music - Opera throughrock. It was through Sister Janet's concernfor the youth of Australia that she becameinvolved with the Cathedral Youth RockMasses which were held in Adelaide lastyear, drawing upwards of two thousandyoung people to each Mass.

A Rock Mass for television is now in themaking with Sister Janet working in con-junction with the ABC Television Network. The young Nun is also expected to commencea two month overseas tour of colleges andconvents. Dates for the European tour arenow being set.

boast such an audience. Finkelstein andCooper are now working on concerts forQuebec City, Trois Rivieresand other majorQuebec centres.

Cockburn's tour of the west is also shapingup for "sold out" notices. His Edmonton date(10) has been sold out with a second shownow selling briskly. Other dates include:Saskatoon (7), Calgary (14) and five days(19-23) at the Egress Club in Vancouver. This is the first club date for the Vancouverarea and Egress owner Buz Wright, predictsthat Cockburn will break all house records.

The Montreal success for Cockburn hasresulted in Cooper taking a similar approach- and theatre for an April 12 date forMurray McLauchlan.

RICHARD GRESCO READIESCLASSICAL SET FORGOOD NOISE LABELWith their finger in the pop, rock andcountry pie, Good Noise are ready to makeovertures to the classical buff. They recentlysigned classical pianist Richard Gresco andhe is currently selecting repertoire for hisfirst recording session.

Gresco received excellent notices last yearfrom New York critics for his Carnegie Hallrecital. This was followed by a series ofconcerts and interviews on Canadian radio.Plans are now being formulated for aEuropean recital tour for late spring.

IAN THOMAS RETURNSTO CHART PICTUREIt's back to the charts once more for GRT'sIan Thomas. His latest single, "Come TheSon", a Thomas original through CorinthMusic-BMI and produced by John Lombardo, made good chart moves first week of re-lease. Several programmers had recognizedthe album cut of "Son" as having singlepotential and were programming the cut asa single - keeping the Thomas sound upfront after his first single, "Painted Ladies"had dropped off the charts. One of the firstmajors to go on the single was CHUM inToronto. The picture is almost complete, nationally.

Thomas came close to breaking the U.S.barrier with his "Ladies" deck, released onthe Janus label. The New York -based com-pany is waiting for positive Canadian actionbefore implementing a U.S. release.

Trident Studios in London, England is thesetting for the next album session by Thomas.

He is currently laying down tracks with hisproducer Adam Mitchell. The latter wasrecently signed to a recording contract byGRT. Engineer on the session is David Hent-schell of Trident who performed boardduties for Elton John's most recent success"Yellow Brick Road". Supplying backupfor the Thomas session are his sidemenfrom the first album: Steve Hogg, bass;John Capek, keyboards; and Barry Keane, drums. Milan Kymlica is the arranger onthe session. Also sitting in on the sessionwas Ross Reynolds, GRT President andexecutive producer on the album.

IRISH ROVERS HOMEFROM AUSTRALIAThe Irish Rovers have returned home toVancouver after a highly successful tour ofAustralia and New Zealand. The four weektour included twenty-seven concerts, manyof which posted "sold out" notices daysbefore show time.

The tour was also an excellent soundingboard for negotiations on the group's CBC-TV series. Their manager, Les Weinstein, isreportedly close to firming a deal with ABC-TV in Australia and NZBC in New Zealand.

A Rovers' single, "The Road To Gundagay"was released down under to coincide withtheir tour and within a few days of releasewas showing indications of becoming a majorchart item.

Back in Canada their "Gypsy" deck, releasedon their own Potato label, has captured thefancy of "pop" programmers, moving intoNo. 41 this week on the RPM Pop Playlist.

UNITED STATES CONSIDERSX-RATED MOVIES FOR TVAmericans might one day be able to watchskin flicks on their home television setaccording to government communicationspolicymaker Clay Whitehead, director ofthe White House Office of Telecommunica-tions. He said that he could conceive of atime when x -rated movies would be shownon cable television, if they are not bannedoutright by law and when technology comesup with a way to block out the program forthose not interested in it. Whitehead alsosaid congress should require that professionalfootball games on CATV be shown free, mandated by congress because sports are anexceptional form of entertainment as shownby their immunity from antitrust laws. Herein Canada, at least in Toronto, citizensare able to sit down and relax with a bluemovie on television (CITY -TV) althoughthat Saturday combination of football andbeer on the screen will probably be with usfor quite some time.

CANADIANS IN ONLOU REED SESSIONCanadians Whitey Glann, former drummerwith Mandala, and Prakash John, who playedbass with Bush, were among the sidemenused for Lou Reed's new RCA album release,"Rock & Roll Animal Live". The session,a Steve Katz production, was produced atNew York's Howard Stein's Academy ofMusic.

Tom Barry, Ontario promo rep for RCA,has had much luck in pushing this soft"velvet underground" sound, with "WhiteLightening/White Heat", "Sweet Jane","Heroine" and "Rock & Roll" consideredoutstanding cuts. Heavy airplay on CHUMFM has created a demand for the album withCRFM Ryerson, influencing the campuscrowd.

Other members on the session were SteveHunter, lead guitar who was formerly withthe Detroit Wheels, and Dick Wagoner, leadguitar.

CFGM SPREADSCOUNTRY GOSPEL

Feb. 12/74

CFGM radio Toronto presented it's firstmammoth country music wing ding. Thesmall village of Kleinburg, north of Torontohad never seen such a surge of people asthey did on this day. Over 10,000 men, women and children some on snowmobiles, some who had parked their cars on thehighway owing to the fact that the parkinglots were filled earlier, and also becauseof the bad weather conditions many peoplewalked quite a distance to see this Canadianmusic country spectacular. Marathonrecording stars entertained for two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The afternoon show was a little late ingetting started because of the weather con-ditions.

In the huge barn a pet racoon was busy play-ing aloft the stage and he stayed up therefor the rest of the day. On the first showbacking up the performers were JohnnyBourke and Eastwinds. On steel was BobLucier, drummer Roddy Lee, electricpiano and guitar Mel Aucoin and playingfiddle Bryon Baron. Joyce Seamone, HarryHibbs, Diane Leigh and Smiley Bates weresinging their hit songs and the crowd lovedevery minute of it. On hand to see thateverything was running smoothly wasBill Seddon, a sound man from ThunderSound (Toronto) and national promotion manfor Marathon Records Doug Taylor. Creditshould also go to Joe's Sound from PortCredit, Ontario for inside and outsidecountry music provided between shows.

During the three hour intermission thosewho wished could wander around outside

see the places where stars like ShirleyTemple and Roy Rogers had made moviesmany years ago, for the children there wasfree pony rides. There was also an oldwestern style cook -out which consisted ofhot-dogs or a plate of beans and pop.

The second show began early, artists forthe second show were Joyce Seamone,Donna Moon, Con Archer, Roy McCaull, andJoe Firth. Winston James was unable toappear.

There was some really great music heard onthis show today and plans are under way foranother wing ding, hopefully with betterweather on hand. Movie Land Ranch willnow be opened to the public so if you areup around the Kleinburg area be sure to dropin for a visit.

Why did so many show up today for thisevent? Because it was all free? Or becauseeveryone who attended were real countrymusic fans? Let's hope it was for the latterreason. Let's turn out like this all thetime to support our Canadian artists whowork so hard to please us the public.

STORY OF THEBOUZOUKI FLOOKIE

Feb. 9/74

In the last issue of RPM Weekly, in "theProgrammers, there was an article aboutVicky Leandros and the bouzouki. Well ...I thought I'd take the time to tell youabout the history of the popularity of thebouzouki in Europe. It all started with NanaMouskouri's recording of "Weisse RosenAus Athen" in Germany, which was laterrecorded in English, as "The White Roseof Athens", in French, "Roses Blanches DeCorfoue", and in Italian as "Rosa EnAthena". It was composed by Manos Had-jidakis, the man who write the music to"Never On Sunday", "Topkapi", andmany other scores.

If you really want to hear some goodbouzouki music, listen to the followingrecordings by Nana Mouskouri and her groupThe Athenians:

the song "Children of the Stars"on the album "Presenting Nana Mouskouri... Songs from her TV series"Fontana 6312 036;

the song "Je Finirai Par L'Oublier"on the album "Une Voix ..." onFontana 6399 007;

the album "Chante La Grece", whichfeatures accompaniments on the bouzoukiin several of the selections!!! (sung in Greek)Fontana 6325 303;

and, the song "Telalima" on the album"A L'Olympia" (sung in Greek)Fontana 885 527.

If you've ever seen a Nana Mouskouriconcert, you'd know what I mean. If youhad heard some of the above selections, you'd also know, that if more people knewthat Nana Mouskouri existed, she'd be abigger hit than Vicky Leandros.

Peter X

P.S. Weisse Rosen Aus Athen won Nana agold record, and Germany's highest awardfor the best female singer, "The SilverLion" award.

This is not a publicity stunt! I'm just aninterested fan!!

CAMPUS DISCS COSTS

HURT PROGRAMMING

Feb. 6/74

Usually in this envelope you receive theweekly NOCTURNE playlist additions fromCFRC, but this last week we have receivedno singles which I feel are worthy of airplayon our station's rock programmes. Usuallywhen this happens, I pull a couple of albumcuts to add to the playlist, but this weekwe have also received absolutely no rockalbums whatsoever, so I would like totake this opportunity to say something thathas been building up inside of me for quitea while.

CFRC is entirely non-profit and non-commercial. We have no affiliations withany profit making organizations, such asrecord stores; so we have always beenheavily dependent on complimentary (i.e.

RPM 913174 - - - 11

free) copies of albums and singles toprovide material for this station's program-ming. Early in 1973, most record compan-ies cut back on free copies of material to us(or cut us off completely), which hurt usbut it was not crucial. We were still ableto order albums for one dollar from mostlabels, and although our budget was small, there was enough to keep our materialcurrent. Since September, when I tookover as director of rock programming atCFRC, my orders have averaged abouttwenty albums per month total, split upamong the various companies. Out of allthe major labels, only WEA, Columbia andCapitol ever responded; these companiessupplying about 50% of what we orderedfrom them. We got absolutely no responsefrom the other record companies, evenafter re -ordering.

Now, almost all our records are dealer's listprices, which will not affect us for a coupleof months because ALL our orders havebeen suspended, due to lack of funds, untilthe new budget comes down in May.

I personally find all this business very frustrat-ing. We do our best to try and provide aserive to our community with, what seemsto us to be, no help from anybody at therecord companies except a very few. I havetried to find out what is needed from us bythe companies to improve our service. Everyweek you receive a copy of our playlistadditions, and once a month a copy of thecomplete playlist, but most representativesseem to be more impressed with littlestickers and T-shirts. We cannot afford topromote the station in this manner (assum-ing we even wanted to). We also cannotafford to phone each company regularly justto "keep in touch", because we are notlocated in south western Ontario and it is along distance call from Kingston. However,I have tried to do the next best thing, bydrawing a map showing exactly how to gethere, and enclosing a list of the peoplecurrently in charge of running CFRC.

Even before the cutbacks and price increases,it was a fact that the best shows at CFRCwere done by people who depended heavilyon their own, personal collections, simplybecause of the difficulty in getting therecords we wanted. Now the freebies haveall but stopped so even this way out has-been cut off. Students cannot afford to buyenough to do justice to current material. Why were such major price increases neces-sary anyway? We are aware of the shortageof plastic, but can this justify an increaseof 150%, when the plastic in an album is

HOUKAH'S PAPP &STEPHENS RECEIVENOD FROM PER-CEP-TIONCanadian programmers are having anotherlisten to Houkah recording artists JamesPapp and Paul Stephens. The Vancouver -based label released a single by the pair,"Country Lady", written by Papp andStephens, a few months ago but it wasn'teven given time to stiff. Chief of theHoukah complex, Ross St. John, took theirtroubles to Per-cep-tion, a Dallas, Texasfirm that had come up with a novel researchmethodology involving recorded sound.

Accordingly, "Country Lady" was one oftwelve selections contained on a tape. Sixof these selections were current hits with sixbeing test selections. Subjects used for thesound test have been well -schooled on thephysiographic testing procedures. Thesesubjects are fitted with finger electrodes, connected to a polygraph which measuresseveral bodily functions including heartbeat, pulse and galvonic skin response. Subjectslisten to the selections and their physiologi-cal responses are monitored and recordedby means of a continuous graph.

The technique used by Per-cep-tion has beendeveloped from over five years of research. The response, recorded on the continuousgraph, is measured, resulting in individualas well as group scores being compiledfor each selection on a scale from one tofifty. Capper to the whole experiment isthe assistance of three radio station programdirectors from the largest markets in the U.S.They evaluate and score each test selection.Canadian programmers are now being used.Per-cep-tion recently bowed Canadian off-ices in Toronto headed up by Peter Bains ofCKEY.

A combination of the physiological responsescores of the test subjects and the evaluationand score of the radio station programdirectors results in a composite score foreach test selection.

Back to Houkah and "Country Lady", whichcame up with a score of 33 out of 50.Demographics listed the single weak with

PROVINCIAL LEADERS PROVETHEY ARE STOMPIN' TOM FANSCanada's energy problems were shoved asideat the recent conference of provincial leaders,to honour Boot's Stompin' Tom Connors.New Brunswick Premier Richard Hatfield,a long-time admirer of Stompin' TomConnors, borrowed one of Tom's stompin'boards, and returned the next day with theboard, autographed by all ten of Canada'spremiers.

Inscribed at the top of the board in Hatfield'shandwriting was the message "Keep onStompin' for Canada". Hatfield was quotedas saying he wanted to do this for Connorsbecause he and the other Premiers reallyappreciated what Tom has done for Canadathrough his music.

Connors first met Hatfield last June when

males and females over 18 and moderate withteens. Charlie Rich's "Most BeautifulGirl" scored 50 and strong on all demo-graphics with the same score and demo-graphics for "Photgraph" by Ringo Starr.Elton John's "Yellow Brick Road" scored42.

Per-cep-tion records the results of the emo-tional response in terms of a Reaction Rat-ing Scale, assigning a value to each recordcut on a scale of 1 to 30. As well, thethree program directors use a scale of 1 to 5.Based on Per-cep-tion's previous studios,a composite reading of 27 to 28 is borderlinewith 29 or more indicating the record apotential hit. The range of the compositescore is 1 to 50.

If you're confused, make sure you attend C8.The doctor who originated the research onthis method of mind and body evaluation ofsound, will be on hand to explain.

Meanwhile, give "Country Lady" by JamesPapp and Paul Stephens another spin. Pappwill soon release as a solo artist with "Sun-shine Of Your Mind" while the pair will be onrelease with their Houkah album, "Comox &Friend". POLYDOR LEADING INCOUNTRY PROMOTIONMany programmers across the countryhave been critical of the apathetic approachby some record companies with regard tocountry product - "no releases", "latereleases", "no promotion to back upcurrent releases".

Polydor, recognizing the potential salesvolume of country product, have launcheda major promotion tagged, "This Is CountryMusic". The promotion will showcase theirmajor country acts including Mel Tillis,Faron Young, Jerry Lee Lewis, CliffEdwards and Hank Williams Senior andJunior and many more.

The promotion is being supported at thein-store level with full colour posters, counter displays, demo 8 -track tapes fordealers, as well as a major sales drive.

Polydor has 10% of the RPM CountryPlaylist with several more listings ready tobreak through. Powerhouse releases byTom T. Hall and Johnny Rodriguez haveset the pace for the Statler Bros., BillyWalker, Gary Sargeants, Mel Tillis andEddy Arnold.

KATJA EBSTEIN COULDCAPTURE WORLD MARKETIt's only taken five years for pretty youngKatja Ebstein to become one of continen-tal Europe's most popular female vocalistsand now she has her sights on the worldmarket. It was back in 1969 when her Liber-

ty single, "Wie Ein Kind" (Like A Child),catapulted the young German Miss into topof the charts popularity. She has had spottysuccess since and, after five years, hasestablished herself as a bright new star towatch. Her vehicle, "Star Of Mykonos",which became a hot "pop" item acrossCanada and came close to crossing -over intothe contemporary rock market.

Doing it with her first record was a toughact to follow and she prepared herself forthat tag of being "a one hit wonder" bydeveloping her act and grooming herselffor television, guest spots on interviewshows and a tour with James Last whichexposed her to millions of Europeans. Her"Mykonos" single became a Top 10 itemin many European countries and wasreleased in English and French - bothversions receiving extensive play in Canada.

United Artists are now readying an albumfor release within the next few weeks.

GOOD NOISE FEELSOUT COUNTRY MKT.Good Noise have taken a stab at the countrymarket with a single release by Brian Blain.Entitled "The Story Of The Magic Pick"(GN 1003) a Blain original, is a humourousbit about Elvis Presley and the good life.

Blain is a native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, writes most of his own material and has apolished stage presence that is gathering hima large -sized following. Good Noise haveseveral Blain sides in the can.

SHE IS ON THE MOVE89 with a bullet first week in Billboard,99 in Cashbox, 114 in Record World. Thanks to the musically aggressive trade- Southcote and Smile Records.

DYNAMIC HOUSE INTONEW HEADQUARTERSDynamic House have moved their base ofCanadian operations to a new office/ware-housing complex in the Woodine-Fincharea of Toronto. The U.S. parent company, formed less thantwo and a half years ago have moved them-selves into the $20 million bracket. Muchof their success has been through televisionsaturation and service to retail stores. Theynow have detail people in Ontario, Quebec, and the prairies and hope to expand thisnationally within the next few weeks. Theyrecently opened a warehousing operationin Vancouver.

Dynamic concentrates on non -recordproduct as well, but are obviously gainingmuch ground with their current recordbonanza - a two record set by EddyArnold. Upcoming is a two record set of the"Greatest Hits" by Nat King Cole.

War children weaned on Motown musicLONDON, Eng.

Though these past few years of roamingabout the rock music globe, I've frequentlywondered why Motown's contribution torock 'n' roll has not been duly accredited.

After all, Motown has produced more classicsingle recordings than any other recordcompany; and indeed, they've been doingso since the days of Chuck Berry. That, I

r NUMBER ONE:1;;kv4 WITH A BULLET

ritchie yorke

hardly need remind you, is a long. longtime. Motown has been around long enoughto see and hear the birth and the demiseof the Beatles - in fact, during the Liver-pool lads' American invasion of 1964,Motown was the only label able to keep oncoming up with chart -toppers amidst thePommy onslaught. I strongly suspect theywill outlive the Rolling Stones.

What I mean is that Motown was makingrecords in the fifties when most of us werejust listening to them. We, "the war children"(Van Morrison's description of those of usborn during and soon after World War II)were weaned on Motown music.

My heart really does skip a beat when Ithink back over that neverending streamof classics that came out of the Detroitstudios. If I had to name a dozen of myfavorites from that first generation of whatcame to be called the Motown sound, I'dbe likely to include the Miracles' You'veReally Got A Hold On Me (next to this,

ARPEGGIO OFF WITHSEVERAL SINGLESArpeggio Records have scheduled the latterpart of February for the release of severalsingles. Included are: Lynn Jones with aTony Hatch penning of "I Love Your KindOf Loving"; the Family Brown with "KidsIn The Kitchen", and "What Used To Be ARiver".

Arpeggio's producer Gary Buck will shortlyrelease a Dick Damron composition, "Know-ing That She's Leaving". This session wasproduced at RCA's Toronto studios withJohn Arpin looking after the arrangementsas well as keyboard duties. Giving an assiston the session were Al Briscoe, steel; 011ieStrong, guitar; Keith MacKay, guitar; RedShea, guitar; Ian MacDonald, drums; PaulFortier, bass and Zeke Shepherd, harmonica. The Laurie Bower Singers supplied vocalbackup.

Buck has just returned from several datesacross Canada including a television appear-ance on the Gaby Haas show in Edmonton(CFCN-TV). He also appeared on a CKRMRegina special. Buck has beeen the voicebehind the Mountain Dew commercials andis scheduled for several studio sessions forthe new Mountain Dew commercial. He willbe touring Canada this year in conjunctionwith Mountain Dew.

the Beatles' version was honestly nauseating),"Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas(and probably "Quicksand"), Marvin Gaye's"Pride and Joy" (and who could forget"You're A Wonderful One", the definitiveMemphis, Tennessee trip), "Every LittleBit Hurts" by Brenda Holloway, Jr. Walkerand the All Stars' "Shotgun" (Let alone"Roadrunner"), "You Beat Me to thePunch" by Mary Wells, the Marvelettes'"Please Mr. Postman", "It's Growing" bythe Temps, the Miracles'"Tracks Of MyTears" or "Ooh Baby Baby" and two StevieWonder ravers, "Fingertips Part 2", and "ICall It Pretty Music (But the Old Folks CallIt the Blues)" - the last-mentioned beingmy personal theme song throughout myvarious teenage trials and tribulations. And,to throw in a couple of unknown classics formy list: Eddie Holland's "Leaving Here" and"A Love She Can Count On" by the Miracles.

Looking back on it now, Motown's monu-ments were many and mostly magnificent(as is, it seems, my alliteration); they putthe bass in rock 'n' roll, they showed whatto do with strings, they pioneered multi -instrument innovation (remember thetime they threw in an anvil for the Temps'"It's Growing?"), and their vocal soundswere inevitably sizzling. Not to mentionthe raw song material, which has never beenequalled in the 45 rpm frame of referenceand I don't write that lightly.

So, when you get right down there with it,you cannot help but wonder why mediaaccolades for the Motown music -makershave been so limited. Some clues might beforthcoming herein

A few weeks back, we were thrilled to learnthat Stevie Wonder was coming over for theMIDEM circus and would play one gig atthe Rainbow Theatre.

I've never seen Mr. Wonder live, althoughmy ties with his music go back to his and mybeginnings. You may now find this incredible, but I was once fired from a radio station inall -white Australia for playing Stevie Wonder's"Fingertips Part 2" when it was the no. 1single in the States. A thirty minute film special, showcasing the young Newfoundlander, isalso being readied by Brian O'Dea's JointProductions to be tied -in with several tele-vision stations prior to and during the tour.

said" "Now look here son, that's not theright sort of music for our listeners -- don'tyou let me hear that crap on my radiostation again or you're out on your arse, understand me."

So, burning from the pangs of 18 -year oldrebellion, I went right on and played itfirst up. The guy pulled me right off the airbefore I could even say "Get stuffed".

I've followed Stevie's career closely sincethose grim times, in countries where thingsare a little more together. Through the years,I suppose I've written as much favorablecoverage of the Motown era in major U.S.and British rock journals as any rock journal-ist still active or alive.

It has delighted me to see Stevie Wonder'srecent acceptance in the mainly white -oriented rock media. They're finally realiz-ing that this dude is a genius - some of usknew it back in 1962.

It was really beautiful to read Stevie's com-ments in the New York Times on his latestalbum "Innervisions". "Innervisions givesmy own perspective of what's happening inmy world, to my people, to all people. That'swhy it took me seven months to get together- I did all the lyrics and that's why Ithink it is my most personal album. I don'tcare if it sells only five copies --- this is theway I feel."

It really isn't very hard to get right behinda trip like that. And as we all know, thealbum and various tracks therefrom havebeen monster hits. Great.

So anyway, I called the Motown officein London, presented my credentials, andasked for both concert tickets and anopportunity to rap with Stevie. Some boidwith a New York accent promised to getback to me within a day or two. When Istill hadn't heard anything about 48 hoursbefore the concert, I called again and spoketo a Mr. Phil Symes, who is the Motownmain man in Britain.

Mr. Symes was very understanding, yes he'dget back to me on the tickets althoughthey were tight - and, he mentioned, therewould probably be a press conference thenext day. He took my number and said he'dget back to me.

Never having been turned down or ignoredfor press tickets anywhere in the world, Ididn't give it another thought. Yet here I amputting down these words and Stevie Wonderis down there doing 'em in at the Rainbow.Of Mr. Symes, there was no sign.

We should be sad, I suppose. But I feel sad-der for Stevie Wonder and the Motown cause. After all, herein you just might find someof the reason for the media's general lack ofdue interest in Motown activities. Theirpress relations are abominable.

Here I am, overwhelmed with tickets forcountless other concerts, and I can't evenget into see Stevie Wonder. Little wonderthen that such a miserable job has been donein spreading the word about Motown in soul -starved Britain.

CHURCH MUSIC OF STANFORD AND WOODThe Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford directed byBernard RoseSAGA 5368Almada Distributors should have great success with thislatest release from Saga Records. Lwho has been poorly represented on records in recentyears. (He also wrote seven Symphonies, a Clarinet Concerto, two Violin Concerti, and three piano Concerti, the secondof which was in the repertoire of Benno Moiseiwitsch andHarold Bauer). His Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C majorfor choir and organ opens the programme and is followed byThree Motets for Unaccompanied Chorus. The side concludeswith a setting of The Lord is My Shepherd. Side two featureschoral works by Stanford's pupil, Charles Wood who died in1926. He is represented by the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, and anthems Hail, gladdening light, Glory and honour andlaud, and 'Tis the Day of Resurrection. Good recording andattractive packaging should make this a popular item withthose devoted to English Church music.

It is understandable that as the years go by,you will probably spend as much on recordsas you will on equipment. We will give youa few easy steps to provide you with longerrecord life. Dust will always be a problemso the best thing to do is to clean yourrecords before and after each use. Manyproducts are available such as "Parastst"and "Watt's Preener" both of these haveproven to be very effective. You can alsoget brushes that will clean while you playsuch as "Bib's Groove-Kleen" and "Watt'sDust Bug". Specially treated cleaning clothsare available but not as effective as thebrushes.

A damaged record can often be partiallyrestored, even if it seems to be hopeless.Generally a good cleaning with one of thesolutions from a record shop will make agreat difference. A few shops actually havea machine that will clean and dry discsto perfection. You can also clean themwith a weak dishwashing solution in lukewarm water. Be careful that the water is nottoo hot as it could warp and deform yourdiscs. Drying them requires great care. Thebest way is to lay it on a clean, lint -freetowel on a flat surface, then let it air todry.

"Buckling" the jacket can also help, thiskeeps the record from scratching on thesides of the jacket. If the record has a liner, put it into the jacket backwards and lockthe dust out. Keeping your fingers off theplaying surface will help to reduce theoily build-up.

Of course, sooner or later normal wear willcome into the picture. All we can do istry to slow it down.

For a few weeks now, we have been workingon the premise that you must have goodequipment to get good sound. In most casesthis holds true, but no matter how goodyour equipment is, you can't get good soundfrom worn or dirty recordings. We have a

few hints that may help to preserve yourrecords.

First, a look at the problems and theirrespective causes. Dust and dirt can finisha record's life in a very short time. Dust getsinto the micro -grooves and causes the stylusto jump, creating an audible clicking sound. If this dust is not removed it can becomepermanently embedded in the vinyl. Today'srecords are made of a fairly soft vinyl, whichis easily damaged and deformed. One speckof dust can only mean that there is more. This dust does the most damage when therecord is slipped in and out of the jacket.

Another of the big problems is a gummybuild-up from smoke and cooking etc. Thesesubstances can shorten the life of both the

record and your cartridge.

Keeping your records covered is the mostimportant factor in protecting them. Thedust cover on your turntable was namedafter its function, keep it on and keep thedust out. Static is the main attraction fordust. You can use an anti static spray toget rid of it, but it will make therecording surface tacky and make dustharder to get rid of.

Storing your records on their sides willexpose less surface to dust and can makequite a difference to their life. One of thevery basic rules is never to stack recordson the turntable. This in itself will ruina record faster than all the dust in theworld.

NewAlbumsBILLY JOEL - Piano Man - Columbia KC 32544-HJoel could be the discovery of the year. Title song hasalready established artist as a contemporary rock -cum popartist. Much of his strength has come from the pop program-mers which created an almost immediate crossover situation. Not too much information on Joel although we suspect thepiano stylings are his own. He did write all the material onthe set. Producer was Michael Stewart.

REDBONE - Wovoka - Epic KE 32462-HAlready established with their single hit, "Come And GetYour Love", Redbone won't be a flash in the pan. Thisalbum will ensure a long stay with the contemporaryrock crowd. The "Chant Wovoka" cut is an excellent builder, levelling out with "Clouds In My Sunshine". The set finisheswith a wild rock scrambling "23rd And Mad".STRAWBS - Hero and Heroine - A&M SP -3607-WThey've been a long time between releases but this onemakes up for any lost prestige. The subtle and intricate styl-ing of Dave Cousins adds tenderness throughout the set.Composing eight and vocalizing on nine of the ten cuts,Cousins upfrontness and the band's tight excellence combineto form one of the most beautiful sounding albums in sometime. Take extra listening time for "Autumn", the instrumen-tal intro by John Hawken sets you up for Cousin's "SummerSleep" and "Winter Long". The Strawbs are a unit of poetryand action - lots of good listening.DAVID ESSEX - Rock On - Columbia KC 32560-HProduction and arranging by Jeff Wayne is obviously tuneddown to make the voice of Essex front and centre. It's a lightand easy set, dwelling on romanticism, which may be thereason his "Rock On" single has had such a difficult timebreaking. Essex is a new product of the UK sound and thetiming could be right for this type of approach. There'snothing spectacular about Essex. He just has a clean hintof today's rock and that's where he shines.

OLIVIA - Polydor 2310 316-QThis album gives a very interesting cross-section of materialwith such writers as Dylan, Lightfoot and Kristofferson.Olivia gives it her best and comes out with true "EasyListening" in her unmistakeable style. Basically she could beclassed as a soft rock artist, yet in some instances she verynearly puts out ballads. Side one features the hit single "LetMe Be There" followed by a well known but differentlyapproached "Me And Bobby McGee". Side two is toughto pick because all the material is excellent. Two cuts on theflip side of special interest are "If I Could Read Your Mind"(Canton) and "Angel Of The Morning".ANNE MURRAY - Love Song -- Capitol ST 6409-FOnce again Anne puts out another outstanding album. Herlyrics and tunes are very easy to understand and enjoy."Love Song" of course is the hit single on the album butanother cut on the A Side of the album with hit potentialis "Real Emotion". It seems that all the songs flow togetherin a story book style, each one telling its own tale fromstart to finish. The B side really lets Anne's voice steal theshow, the light background accents her talent rather thancovering it. This side has three interesting numbers, beginning

with "Watching The River Run" then "Son Of A RottenGambler" and last but not least "Send A Little Love My Way".

WEDNESDAY - Last Kiss -- Ampex AC10152-VWe can see the approach of this disc is to reach two markets. The nostalgia freaks should be very interested due to itscontents, also the younger market should like it for thesame reasons that these songs were so big when they first hitthe market. Some of the harmonizing is backed up by a fivepiece string section which seems to add feeling to the material. The album opens with the title song "Last Kiss" which isfollowed by its sequel "Teen Angel" with the lyrics alteredslightly. Side two shows the groups talent for writing aswell as performing. Mike O'Neil puts together four of the cutssuch as "Ride" and "Take Me Home". This is the first timethe group has used a banjo and we find the results appealing.

Profits could come from country tooWith today's country hits shaking up the popand contemporary rock surveys and indica-tions of more and more crossover hits, countrycould become a money maker for the pro-grammer who can measure his market pro-perly and make the 100% switch intocountry. CJ VI Victoria, as we pointed outa few weeks ago, took a winning countryformula into what was considered a conserva-

market and they haven't looked backsince.

CJCJ Langley, B.C. which isn't too far fromthe giant metropolis of Vancouver, hasgreatly influenced the lower mainland of B.C.Under music director Dave Chesney theyhave remained a small town station, andwould appear content to remain so - witha profit. The station personnel like whatthey're doing and Langley obviously likeswhat the station is doing.

The Langley station has been country for thepast six years. Dave Chesney took over thepost of music director a year and a half ago, making few changes but maintaining aheavy twenty-four country format.

Chesney displays a humbleness - rare in theradio business. He knows that his stationdoes influence the Vancouver market buthe plays this down:

CHESNEY: "We're still in the positionwhere the valley outside Vancouver and thesurrounding area of Metro Vancouver isgrowing at such a rate that it has made usa very community -minded radio station andsometimes a lot of people who work here getvery frustrated because the big market isright there but we're not in the program-ming of it. We're not really trying to comein through the back door, like a lot ofpeople think. The salesmen would like itbut we're content to be a community radiostation.

ARE YOU A COUNTRY FAN YOURSELF?

Very much so. My home was originally inSurrey, just down the road a few miles, andI think I've been brought up with countrymusic.

YOU'VE OBVIOUSLY SEEN CHANGESIN COUNTRY MUSIC?

Yes, there's a new breed of country musiccoming up that is attracting the youngerlistener.

WHAT ABOUT THE COUNTRYPERFORMERS THEMSELVES?

Sometimes there is almost an insincerityin some of the artists that I have met andI couldn't understand why they were in it.But the Jennings, the Willie Nelsons and

the Billie Joe Shavers and the Tompallsrepresent a whole new breed coming up incountry music and should make it very big.HOW DO YOU FIND THE CANADIANCOUNTRY MUSIC SCENE? I HEARDYOU PLAYING "LONELY CAB DRIVER"BY MIKE GRAHAM ON MY WAY IN.

That's a very good record. More and more Isee, and I'm glad to see it that Canadianrecord companies are taking a good strongstand with country music. From theirconcept I can totally realize how theywant to get the crossover play for the salesand yet spread it pretty thin. They've gotthe steel and the violins and the productionsare getting better all the time. They aregetting that crossover play to MOR andeven in the smaller markets are getting TopForty play.

YOU MENTIONED THE YOUNGERCROWD THAT SEEMS TO BE LEANINGTOWARDS COUNTRY?

There are a lot of young groups that areinto country - like the New Riders of thePurple Sage. There was a time when countryprogrammers steered away from groups likethe Flying Burrito Brothers, because it wasa common thought that these people werevery insincere in their country outlook -like messing with motherhood. But moreand more we seem to be catching on to thisnew breed. When Doug Kershaw was intown, it was a total rock audience, butKershaw just gave out with that gut -bucketcajun music and the people really got offon it. It seems to me that a lot of peopleare searching for that magic chord - andI think it's country.

DO YOU GET MANY COUNTRY ARTISTSCOMING INTO THE STATION?

We have a regular deal we work with theJack Roberts Agency out of Seattle. Werotate on a six to eight week basis andbring in some of the big names. As far asCanadian groups and artists - we just don'thave anyone come over the Rockies. We didhave Dick Damron drop in to see us but wewould like to see more participation byCanadian recording artists. I could see showslike The Tommy Hunter Show being success-ful out here, by that I mean the QueenElizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. I thinkthat's what is holding the whole Canadianmusic scene back - Canadian artists justdon't promote themselves outside theOntario market.

HAS THE 30% CANADIAN CONTENTCREATED MANY PROBLEMS WITHYOUR STATION?

There has been a great deal of Canadiancountry product released but I have noticeda lessening in releases lately. It seems to bedrying up. Even Stompin' Tom Connorsproduct doesn't come in as often as it usedto. There are problems -- not critical yet,but you remember the RPM CS Meetingin Vancouver when it became evident aftera short while why the Canadian industryis in trouble - and that's because we're notworking together. Everybody is saying it'severybody elses fault. There's a lot of goodtalent out there, but they're not beingrecorded. We have excellent studios inVancouver but access to them is limited. When they do release a single or an album, the promotion is also limited and there is alack of distribution. So, there I go puttingthe blame on someone else, which I shouldn'tbe doing. We do play a lot of Canadian talent. We would like to play more -- but we alsohave to consider the quality of the product. It is getting better though, but I wish therewas more available.

DO YOU THINK WE HAVE A MARKETTO ACCOMMODATE CANADIANPRODUCT?

I think the Canadian sound should beunique and if it were worked on throughmanagers, and promotion people theycould find a hook that could get the supportof the public, but they don't seem to care. They put product out and expect the radiostations to sell it for them.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER SOME OFTHE PROBLEMS FACING OUR MUSICINDUSTRY?

I think there is a lack of communication. The country has to be tied together some-how. We do feel as though we aren't part ofit all. Granted the eastern market is verylarge and that's where the majority ofthings are happening but it will never becomea national happening if the west coast aswell as the east coast aren't recognized. Thesame thing goes for Canadian artists, as Imentioned before. They must get out andhelp themselves.

GENERALLY SPEAKING ARE YOUMAKING MONEY ON COUNTRY MUSIC?

Programming -wise, yes. We have hit on aformula that has attracted a very large andloyal listenership. So, naturally if you satisfyyour listeners, any programmer can make aprofit. The profit factor is important but sois your own feeling about the type ofmusic format you are into. We happen to like

entry into the communications media",adding: "Given the technical, economic andcultural imperatives of our industry, exces-sive concentrations of either private orgovernment power could threaten the orderlydevelopment of communications in Canada.

Our challenge simply stated is to provide animput of quality and understanding relativeto the importance of the issues that willarise."

MAC McCURDY TAKES HELMOF STANDARD BROADCASTINGMr. Hollis McCurdy, 54, has replaced theretiring Mr. Thorton Cran as president ofthe biggest and richest radio concern inCanada - Standard Broadcasting. Standardowns CJAD in Montreal, CFRB and CKFMin Toronto, Standard Broadcasting Sales(representing 15 stations nationally),Canadian SBC (representing 50 stations inNew York), the Muzak franchise for EasternCanada, the Canadian Talent Library ($1million trust responsible for producing 175Ips since 1962), and Standard BroadcastNews.

Mr. McCurdy was former president ofCJAD Ltd., making a spectacular climbfrom a $60 a month announcing job inSault Ste. Marie before the Second WorldWar. He started in Radio at CKLW Windsorin 1937 as a "joe boy ... reading a stationbreak if they thought no one was listening".

He must have made a favourable impressionas he soon had the full time job in Sault Ste.Marie. The war came and went and McCurdystayed on announcing for the CBC Inter-national Service broadcasting to CanadianTroops still in Europe. A few months later,he returned to Canada and a new station,CJAD in Montreal. From there, it was aclimb up the ladder as chief announcer from1948, program director from 1951, stationmanager from 1958, vice-president andgeneral manager from 1961 and presidentfrom 1968.

MAJOR SOUND CHANGESFOR VICTORIA'S CKDAJohn Molley, music director at Victoria'sCKDA, reports a major facelifting insound for the station. Known as an easylistening outpost, the station will movegradually into a "smoother, laid back softrock" pseudo -format, so as not to jolt theirlisteners too much. The format approachwill be experimented with until Molley hitson a sound, conducive to CKDA listeners.Molley is now using the services of Musicprogramming aids and will be contributingto RPM's The Programmers.

NEW AM RADIO STATIONEXPECTED FOR YORK REGIONA new AM radio station is in store for theYork region north of Toronto by the end ofthe year.. worth at most 50 cents? Why are extrava-gant parties carried to ridiculous extremesto announce new signings, and why canpromoters get twenty-five free copies ofeach album released by an artist on thebill, when we can't get one of an album wewant to give air -time?

I fear that this last increase may prove to bethe straw that broke the camel's back, dooming CFRC and other smaller stationsto mediocre programming as long as theseconditions continue.

country music ourselves and I think our on -air personalities show this sincerity as well. Our listeners are happy. They put theirradio on 800 and they leave it there and willprobably leave it there for a long time untilthe station does something or changes themusic so as to annoy them. You have tokeep a close contact with the people and thecommunity."

So, there's a typical Canadian operation. The Langley station is small and naturallyheavy on community involvement. Theyenjoy what they are doing which makes fora loose but effective playlist and a general"home -town" attitude. No big city noises-- an operation that satisfies their publicand the CRTC, and makes money.

Remember -- there are 137 stations acrossCanada now programming at least threehours of country music a day. Thirty-threeof these stations program country musicanywhere from twelve to twenty-fourhours per broadcast day. The frosting onthe country music cake is the fact thatmore than 88% of the stations in Canadaprogram some country music. Now, all wehave to do is convince the record companiesthat country artists are important and ifproperly stocked, retailers could sell muchmore country product.
