VISIONARY AWARD RECIPIENT
Jay H. Shidler is the founder and managing partner of The Shidler Group, a Honolulu-based national investor focused on commercial real estate and credit-related investments.
While at UH Manoa, Shidlerworked part-time for a real estate appraisal firm. Starting in his senior year, he wrote a weekly real estate column for a prominent Hawai‘i business publication.
JAY H. SHIDLERBBA 1968Founder and Managing Partner The Shidler Group
After graduating in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Shidler was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Upon leaving the service in 1971, he formed what would become The Shidler Group.
Shidler purchased his first hotel in 1972, the Polynesian Plaza on Kalakaua Avenue, and quickly expanded to the mainland with acquisitions in Santa Barbara and Seattle. Fifteen years later, The Shidler Group had 10 offices on the mainland and owned billions of dollars of commercial properties from Manhattan to San Francisco.
In all, The Shidler Group has acquired and owned over 2,000 properties in 40 states and Canada. In Hawai‘i, The Shidler Group owns 1.1 million square feet of the Honolulu market, including the Davies Pacific Center, City Center, Waterfront Plaza, and the Pan Am Building.
During the past 20 years, Shidler founded and was the initial investor in over 20 public and private companies, five of which he listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In the U.S., these included San Francisco-based TriNet Corporate Realty Trust (NYSE: TRI), one of the nation’s largest owners of corporate real estate; Chicago-based First Industrial Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: FR) one of the nation’s largest industrial property owners; the Columbia, Maryland-based Corporate Office Properties Trust (NYSE: OFC), the nation’s largest provider of high security office facilities to the intelligence industry; and Pacific Office Properties Trust, Inc. (NYSE Amex: PCE). Internationally, Shidler’s Bermuda-based AAA/Aaa-rated Primus Guaranty, Ltd. (NYSE: PRS), with its $22 billion portfolio, became one of the financial industry’s largest providers of credit default swap protection.
In 2006, Shidler donated $25 million to the College of Business at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. In honor of his gift, the college was renamed the Shidler College of Business. His gift to the university was the single largest donation made by a private donor at that time. The gift allowed the college to increase student scholarships and faculty research support, expand academic programs, provide matching gift opportunities, and renovate and upgrade classrooms, buildings, and the surrounding environment. Since then, Shidler quietly continued to give a total of $6 million to further renovate the college facilities.
Shidler’s new $69 million commitment in October 2014 brings his total UH giving to $100 million. It is the largest private donation in the history of UH and is truly a visionary gift.
Jay H. Shidler and The Shidler Family Foundation are active supporters of many local and national educational, cultural, and charitable organizations. Shidler and his Honolulu-born wife Wallette (Kamehameha Schools, Class of 1964) have a daughter, Summer, and four grandchildren.
