TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema Music 31The first known instance of the use of playback in Tamil

Cinema took place in 1938 in ‘Nandakumar’. The film wasproduced in Poona (now Pune) as a partnership venture inMarathi and Tamil with the later day Indian movie mogul AV.Meiyappan as the partner of the Tamil version.

The film was directed by well known cameraman and Marathifilmmaker Keshav Rao Dhaibar.

The cast included T. R. Mahalingam (his film debut), T. P.Rajalakshmi, C.V.V. Panthulu , T. S. Rajalakshmi, T.R.Ramachandran (his debut) and others. It was the first film formany of them. Helping Dhaibar for the Tamil version in thescript and direction was another newcomer, later the notedwriter-director and producer, A. T. Krishnaswamy (ATK). Thetalented but sadly underrated film music composer, S. V.Venkataraman also came into films with ‘Nandakumar’.

The ‘kid’ Krishna was played by ‘Master’ Sethuraman. Later,as Madurai Sethuraman, he made a mark as the singer fornoted Bharathanatyam dancers and toured all over the world.(A good pal of this writer, he passed away some years ago.) T.R. Mahalingam played the ‘boy’ Krishna and became a starwith his very first film.

A song sung by the actress playing Krishna’s mother Devakiwas not up to mark and Meiyappan, ATK, Dhaibar and otherswere disappointed with the quality of her singing. Understand-ably they were eager to re-shoot the sequence with some otherstar but, for many reasons, it was not feasible.

Meiyappan and others thought hard and then came up withan innovative idea. Why not replace only the sound track withanother voice and shoot the song with the actress moving onlyher lips in ‘sync’? (The movie world lingo for ‘synchronization’).AVM gave the go-ahead signal and a prominent classicalCarnatic musician based in Bombay, Lalitha Venkataraman, was brought in and she sang that song. The scene was re-shotwith the actress moving her lips to the Bombay musician’ssinging. And, lo, the playback system was born in Tamil cinemaand Meiyappan made South Indian film history! And LalithaVenkataraman earned the credit of being the first playbacksinger in Tamil cinema.

Even after playback system became established and thepre-recording of songs before the shoot became technicallypossible, the songs were sung by the artistes themselves andnot by off-screen voice-lending playback singers. One of theearliest of off -screen singers was V. R. Dhanam (sister of thenoted stage, screen and TV star, late lamented V.Gopalakrishnan). The famed filmmaker of his day, Sundar RaoNadkarni (He made films like ‘Haridas’, ‘ Shantha Sakkubai’,‘En Manaivi’, ‘Krishna Vijayam’, ‘ Sudarshan’, and ‘Mahadevi’.)recorded a song for ‘Sakkubai’ (1939) which he picturised on T.S. Krishnaveni.

Another classical Carnatic musician who sang in filmsbehind the screen during late 1930s was the great exponent andstar performer D. K. Pattammal. Her rendering of an emotion-ally charged patriotic song written by celebrated Tamil writerand journalist, ‘Kalki’ ( Ra. Krishnamurthy) and composed byPapanasam Sivan, ‘ Desa Sevai Seyya Vaareer…’, in the Tamilfilm classic ‘Thyaga Bhoomi’ (1939) became very popular, reflecting the mood of the times when the atmosphere wascharged with Indian Freedom Movement.

Interestingly, this song was not issued as a gramophonerecord along with the other songs of the film, and was broughtout later as a private disc by DKP with no mention of the originof the song. The producers were afraid that the record might bebanned by the then British Indian rulers!

Other playback singers from the world of classical musicinclude (Radha) Jayalakshmi, K. J. Yesudas, MangalampalliBalamuralikrishna, P. Leela, and M. L. Vasanthakumari. Sheappeared on screen in a scene in R. S. Mani’s ‘Krishna Bhakthi’(1948) singing s a song in a concert in a king’s court. She lookedslim and very attractive in that scene! (To be continued)

NO HOLDS BARRED

“Paradise Lost”No child living in a Rs. 3-crore house (aglut with all the best

the world has produced to make a man a snob) can tell hiswealthy father that he does not want to learn ‘Kathakali’,especially when he is three months short of three years. That’s impudence. The anguished father complained to methat obedience is no longer a filial response.

“But did you prepare the tiny chap for the idea with storiesof Casablanca and Parasurama? That is the foundation ofall obedience...nothing like sowing the seeds of the idea withsuch asinine examples”.

“Who is Casablanca? I know Parasurama, the old warriorwho reclaimed Kerala from the sea with his axe”.

You can’t blame a chap (who had smuggled himself to theGulf at 16) for not knowing who Casablanca is. “Never mindthat imbecile, who did not have the common sense to runwhen the ship was on fire. The point here is this: Why do youwant a 2-year-old boy to submit to any discipline and why forheaven’s sake that fearsome outfit ‘Kathakali’? And whyany coaching at all at this tender age? Let him be in hisparadise for some time”.

“You are a fine one; he is going to the Carnatic musicteacher at 6:30 in the morning; at 7:15 the violin class akilometre from there; at 8 the Kuchipudi master comeshome. He is free after 8:45 until 9:30 when the school buscomes for his kindergarten. I am only asking the idiot to takeKathakali at 3 until his Karate class at 3:30. He has theentire evening after 7 to play. Is it asking too much...?” Hisbrows corrugated.

“You are letting the child idle for almost 3 hours! A badthing... Why don’t you send him for computer classes? It hasits own languages... Cobol, Fortran. No child worth his bibshould be a computer nincompoop at the ripe old age of threeyears. What would your neighbours say!”

“You are telling me...I have asked a French teacher to fillin at 4:15 until 5 from tomorrow... And what do you think ofGerman?”

“The very thought I had! Very useful for engineeringstudies. Don’t you think he is still lisping? German is hard onthe tongue. Let’s keep if for his fourth birthday — no doubtyou have drafted the University Reader in Malayalam toteach him his mother-tongue...The child deserves it from anygood parent.”

“How naive you are! I toured England once and wasamazed at the fluency of the even one-year olds in English. You don’t think my child should be less smart speaking onlyMalayalam at home! No. I got Professor Higgins to teach mymother and wife to speak English like a native of London. NoMalayalam or Tamil.”

“Good tennis wants them young. 5 pm to 6 pm ideal fortennis; get Leander. 6 pm to 7 pm is blank. How can youwaste it? I suppose you have allotted into ‘childhood’, his ownGod-given fleeting programme! Bonded labour seems a pic-nic”.

“Wrong, man...that’s when the Quiz wizard comes in withgeneral knowledge, and magic lessons...” His pride wasenviable.

“Friend Kuripkaalan, I suggest you let him have 30 min-utes ‘Childhood’ in the Kathakali-slot. I want to see theguinea pig. He can be saved from such cruel parents only bythe S.P.C.A”

LETTER TO THE EDITORDrinking water contamination in Arya Gowda Road

Sir, Residents of Arya Gowda Road, near Srinivasa Street junction, have been suffering from drinking water contamination for the past tendays. Metrowater workers say that the contamination is probably dueto leakage from drainage pipes in Srinivasa Street where some workwas carried out recently.

Two days back, we closed the sump valve, removed the contami-nated water and cleaned the sump. On refilling, the water again stinks. We are unable to use it for domestic purposes due to the health hazard.

We appeal to Metrowater officials to immediately find the cause forthe water contamination and rectify the same. B. V. Natarajan, AryaGowda Road, West Mambalam
