To All My Dear Academians

2011-12 has been a wonderful year again for many Academi-ans residing newly in or returning to Jockey Club Academy Hall (JCAC). I have received comments like “I love the dynamic at-mosphere in Hall 4(JCAC) and the kindness and caring from all these people living here” from among you, Academians, sharing with me your delight of having been assigned to JCAC and your

joy of living here. In fact, it is the support and love of you, Academians, for the hall during the year that you have made JCAC a great place for living and learning. It was my honour and privilege that I have been appointed as the residence master of JCAC since its infant stage. Having served in this position for seven years, I witnessed the rapid devel-opment of JCAC with notable achievements in both services and activities under the guidance, hard work and commitment of the many Residence Tutors and the Residents' Association Execu-tive Committees and Councillors who have contributed immensely to the welfare and benefits of fellow Academians in the past years. With the unfailing support of all the Academians, I am proud to say that JCAC is a well-groomed young adult today like your very self, having its Aca-demian culture and values firmly established and moving steadily ahead with its vision of provid-ing a happy second home to all residing under its roof. As many of you may know already, I have decided to relinquish my duties as your residence master at the end of this academic year. It has been a difficult decision for me to make. With less attention given to JCAC due to my growing engagements elsewhere, I feel that I may not be fulfilling my duties as a residence master to your expectation. Despite my strong interest in working together with young people, I think this may be the appropriate time for me to let go this meaningful job which I love so much, and to move on focusing more on my other areas of commitment.I treasure greatly the time that I have spent in JCAC. I have countless happy moments here living and learning together with every one of you. I hope you feel the same as I do and will cherish the many acquaintances that you have made in JCAC, and continue with these re-lationships as your life-long friends who can share your happiness and sorrows with you as you progress with your many life tasks in the future. Thank you all for giving me my fond memories of JCAC! It is because of you that JCAC has be-come one of the best halls on campus which is well known for its energy and multifarious activi-ties, harmony and integration of residents coming from a diverse background, and a strong hall spirit by which Academians will always give their best to strive for the good name of JCAC in a united front. I do believe that JCAC can only go from strength to strength from this point on-wards, with the concerted efforts of all Academians - past, present and future. Once an Academian, always an Academian! May I wish JCAC and all Academians every ac-complishment in the years ahead.

Farewell and best wishes to you all,

PeggyYour residence masterMay 2012

Hi! I ’m Ar Zhi , the tutor of floor one. In the past year, we have experienced many memorab le event s . Bu t I was most impressed by the Ninepin Island Trip and the 2012 S inging Contest. The trip is very special in that it showed us another aspect of Hong Kong: no forest like high buildings, but attractive landscape. And our hall, I think, is particularly successful in the Singing Contest ---- an absolutely good show! I’ve been, for the first time, aware

that our hall-mates al l are such beautiful dancers and all details are perfect! I was also deeply moved by a lot of other things, for example, the Taipei story written for the Writing Competition by Crys-tal, a very diligent tutor and my good partner in the hall management team. My only suggestion for all residents is ----- seize the day and make your hall life extraordinary!

Residence Tutors

阿志的溫文爾雅、Johnson 的Hyperactive( 試過在床上閉上眼耳邊還縈繞著他的語句 !)、Angel 的可愛傻勁、勇哥的「快 思」「邏

I’m so proud to be an AC ADEMIAN.

I’ll always love and miss you all.

Having been a Residence Tutor in JCAC for a whole year, I am deeply impressed by the passion each member of the hall possesses. We are indeed like a family, in which every one of us shares the happiness and tears, enjoys every moment we spent together, and helps each other out whenever we can. Yes, this

is JCAC, and we are a group of diligent academians that are united. From Multi-cultural Journey to Disneyland Trip, every activity I was in charge of has earned your support and respect. I feel like being blessed. Being part of Floor 66, part of Give Me Five, part of the cheering team of PEK Cup, one of Peggy’s RT, one of the eight tutors, I get to know each and everyone of you, my dearest kids and friends. JCAC, thank you for taking me on board!

I’m a big sister in 11/F. My younger sisters and brothers like to share their interesting stories with me. I usually become a wordy mother who always pushes her young children to study rather than play games and facebook. The happiest moment for me is to hold hot pot gathering and sweet dessert gatherings.

Living in JCAC, I have my most supportive teammates. I cherish the opportunity to live and work with all my fellow girl tutors -- Crystal, Angel, Nancy and Kinki who are the most diligent, frank and funny girls in the world! My fellow boy tutors also give me endless care and support since the first day when I moved into JCAC. Many thanks to Larry, Yung, Zhi, Johnson and Uncle Pong for including me as a family member even though sometimes I act like a naughty and silly boy.

If my experience in JCAC is an article,

Peggy’s can be a book! She treats all the Academians as her sons and daughters. It is her who tells us how to take care of our Academians, how to organize activi-ties in hall, and most importantly how to keep our Cornwall lion spirit in the rest of our life.

I will move on with my proudest Cornwall lion spirit.

Kinki

Hello! Academians!!My name is Chan Chui Fan Kinki. I am the new tutor of 9/F in the Semester B. JCAC is just likes my second family. I feel warm and supported here. When I was in year 1, I started living here and joined the Hall Ocamp. I had a wonderful hall life in my floor and with my roommate –Monkey who has become my for-ever best friend. When I was in year 2, I became the blue house‘s mother in Hall Ocamp. They have given me some amazing memo-ries. I really hope that “We’re all in this together” forever and ever.

Now, I am pleased that I can be the tutor of the 9/F. All the ladies are beautiful and cute in my heart =]. I wish all the ladies can love and make a good friend with each other. Floor aside, I am hon-ored to work with the Hall management team. I would like to ex-tend my gratitude to my fellow tutors and Peggy from whom I’ve learnt a lot.

We’re all in this together

Staying here as a Residence Tutor for the second year, I am glad that I can still see, on the faces of our Academians, smiles that tell me how much they love JCAC. The smiles are simply but enormously encouraging to the RTs as these are indicators show-ing us that our hard work is worth it.

This year has been fortuitously memorable. The RT team is plainly gorgeous. Everyone in the team is supportive and caring, and the unity within the team is remarkable. I am grateful that you all are willing to stay together for the betterment of JCAC no matter how late it is even when the tasks we are facing are tough. I enjoy working with you.

Meanwhile, I am really thankful for the love and support from my 7/F brotherhood, my lovely 8/F and my 9/F girls. It is great to see that you had been actively participating in hall activities; some of you even fight hard for us in Inter-hall competitions. The hap-piness you gained from these activities was not only rewarding to yourself, but also to me, and every other resident who seeks to develop a better JCAC.

We’re all in this together. This line now means a lot to me. This represents the spirit of the hall. This was also the name of the song we sang in the Inter-hall Singing Contest. Joining this team of singers and dancers was undoubtedly the best part of my hall life. I still recall the words of invitation from Kinki – ‘I can guarantee you nothing but hap-piness’, and actually I had gained way more than that. It was lovely to see you all exerting all your efforts in each and every step and movement in the dance; it was delightful to smell the sense of belonging dispersing from the sweat you shed; it was gratifying to listen to you singing the song which speaks out our hall spirit...Vivian, John-son, Kinki, Jenny, Momo, Kh, Holly, Tom, Jason, Gordon, Becca, thank you for taking

me as ‘together’. We’re all stars.

We’re all in this together and this shows when we stand hand in hand make our dreams come true. I know in-side we can make it. Enjoy Hall life!

在此多謝同我一齊奮鬥左兩年既戰友們: you guys are the best!

Councilors

Daphne (Chairlady)It's good to pass our experience to the new residents' association. Hope the spirit of unity would last forever! Many thanks to another 11 councillors. Love u all

Edison (Vice Chairman)

Binary

2/F Binary can be called as an international floor as there are a lot of international students who live in this floor. They come from America, France, Germany, Taiwan etc. Although we have different culture and habits, we can still stick together and understand each other and try to learn from each other. We have fun in the floor gathering although we may not meet all the floor-mate at the same time. Without residence tutor living in this floor, we still have our fantastic hall lives like the others. During the Floor Decoration, we work together as a team aiming at the champion. When others need help, we always like to give our hands. Being one of the Binary makes our hall live wonderful.

Tri-Angels

Big4“Tri-Angels” is our floor name.

“Tri” = 3/F“Angels” = 3/F is a girls’ floor.

All angels here are very gentle and sweet. They enjoy cooking, so they are one of the winners of Inter-floor Cooking Competition.

If you have come to our floor, you may see we have posted our name and station on our door. The station shows the feature of our own culture, as like as Tin Shui Wai from Hong Kong, “Xihu” from Hangzhou, and Donut from US. Relations between Angels are very harmonious even they come from different places and enjoy to live together at 3/F.

They enjoy having meal in Common Room and then share their stories with others.

They are considerate, so they are attentive to keep common area neat and tidy. Therefore they have got prize in Inter-floor Cleanliness CompetitionThey are fresh and energetic because half of them are first year to university.

Wow!!!

Floor name-A? During the floor decoration, Tutor Johnson and the five floor representatives came up with the idea of role-playing Harry Potter. Then four representatives became the department head of Hogwarts school. And Johnson honored four of us with the floor name"Big 4".

Any funny thing on the floor?@0@All of us are active. But g i r l s a re qu i te wild on this floor. They speak foul language quite often. And we have floor gathering b i - w e e k l y . E v e r y time we plan to do something special for the gathering ends up with typical sweet soup gathering.

People on the floor? We got tons of cool people here. Hi lda and Bobo are a pair of joke makers. They always make the atmosphere warm and motivate others with their gags. Ken, Fabio and Aaron are great cook. Alex is a master of beer and spicy food. We always help each others in floor events.

8lourful

2322

Each and every resident living on the 8th floor has an interesting story to tell; their dreams, their experiences, their lives.

8th floor was named 8lourful this year. The residents came up with this idea as they hope every resident will have a richly colorful life. Like the many colors on a palette, each resident on the 8th floor represents a color. They are each unique in their own ways but they join hands to paint a masterpiece. It might be a very quiet floor, but they enjoy each other’s presence very much. Friendly faces and hellos along the corridor often make their hearts lighter despite the stressfulness in daily lives. The few but enjoyable floor gatherings are the best part of all! The residents find it really nice to eat from the same pot with students from other parts of the world at hot pot gatherings. The decorations on the floor are simply but vastly meaningful. Residents took time to write down their dream vacation spots and the unforgettable experiences they had during vacations. Everyday residents are reminded and motivated to strive for the chance to be able to visit their dream places one day. 8flourful is indeed a dreams-filled floor!

Residents on the 8th floor took energy saving seriously. The lights in the common rooms are constantly switched off when the room is not in used. The residents’ discipline has won them the first place in the energy-saving competition and the residents are really proud of this achievement.

e named our floor as “777”, that is the lucky 7s because we all feel lucky meeting each other in the same hall on the same floor.

The floor had become a platform for each of us to nurture friendship and even brotherhood with each other. On this floor, we worked hard; we chatted; we shared our lives; we pursued our dream.

This floor contained residents from various backgrounds. We had among us all sorts of local students admitted to this university by difference means. We also had non-local students from the mainland China, Taiwan, European and Asian exchange students.

Despite the difference in terms of cultural and academic backgrounds, we found a common language, a medium that pulled us together. This common language is drinking. Trying out new beers from around the world, tasting wine and telling good ones from bad ones, sharing whiskey, rum, and all other sorts of alcoholic drinks had made a life to many on this floor. Of course, what was more important was the chat behind. Through the chat, we know each other better and understand our difference more. Let's sit down together and enjoy a great night of chat here.

Go for LifeHaving lived in Hall 4 for almost two years, I have great fun here. And I have gained a lot through being a floor representative. I was the floor representative of the ninth floor last semester. I organized a n d a r r a n g e d “ s w e e t s o u p gathering” on a weekly basis. During the gatherings, floor mates would eat, chat and meet each other, which I think helps a lot in building up friendship among floor mates. Sometimes it’d be quite hard to hold gatherings. Like I needed to think of what to eat, what most floor mates preferred and so on. However, I was not alone as other floor mates of fered help. Last December, I held a Christmas Party in 9/F common room. Floor mates were eager to help decorate common room, buy gifts and suggest what to eat. We all had fun in the Party.I’d say I have met a lot of friends through organizing gatherings. And it’s glad to see people enjoy gatherings that I held. Being the floor representative is a nice experience that paints my hall life.

Before moving in to hall4, whenever it came to the question why we have to live in dormitory, I would say, well, we can rush down to the campus and therefore sleep more. But after experiencing hall l ife in this academic year, my answer to it has been changed. Hall life lets me know so many more friends from different nationalities and disciplines, makes me learn to take care of myself and people around me, and more importantly, has colored my university life. Our floor, 9 for life, is a floor filled with energetic and sweet girls. Our hall

tutor, Kinki, sings like an angel. Suki is a TV drama fan who likes watching TV in common room. Katie is a pretty girl with sweet smile. Jenny is talkative and energetic all the time. Ming is tall and yet very cute. Ballchi, I like the way she laughs because it somehow makes me laugh too. Lai Lai plays sports more than brilliantly. Fish, I like the way we share our food. Tracy, you are beautiful no matter with long or short, straight or curly hair. So many more which cannot be mentioned in here, but I love you all, I really do!

At a glance on the 10th floor of Jockey Club Academy Hall, one could immediately see the cordial welcome conveyed by the colorful cardboard pieces placed either in front of the lifts or floating in the vicinity of the corridor. Those colorful cardboard pieces were cut according to the Pokemon characters of the Japanese Manga by the residents of the 10th floor. Concurrently, some of they are also cute-looking that could make them anyone’s favorite. Also, the characters put were chosen in accordance to the 10th floor’s theme, “Thunderbolt”.In addition to the existing impeccably warm welcome that is “visible”, the warmness provided by the residents of the 10th floor is also on par, especially the one exuded by the 10th floor Residence Tutor, Mr. Larry Lo who has given a lot of tendered care to the residents of his floor. He likes to go out for a dinner with the residents on his floor, mutually talking and sharing his valuable experiences while at the same time giving ample advice to those who seek them. While 10th floor remains welcoming, it is also very lively; not during the day, but during when the daylight is out. At any time during the night, one could hear the screeching and ear-breaking female scream given out that you would never forget or the sound of footsteps of people chasing each other around in the corridor trying to chase someone or the sound of someone singing. Sometimes, you could also see the residents gathering in the common room having hotpot or cooking food together merrily or joking around while watching the television.10th floor is like no other floor, it is the most excellent.

One Thousand and One Nights

2726

It is a fairyland where lovely fairies and beautiful princesses live; it is a peculiar world where cool soccer players and smart artists live. Living in 11th floor is so happy and warm that seems to live in the fairy tales. The sh inn ing wh i te and b lue ribbons just like Alice’s rabbit lead you into a wonderland. When you open any door, you will find stories behind, special and beautiful. The fantastic hall life in the 11 floor is so nice that any resident who lives here does not want to stop it, just like the king who insists on listening to the stories in one thousand and one nights. The atmosphere of this fairyland is friendly and warm. When we encounter some worrisome things outside, hall is a perfect shelter and floormates are one of the strongest supports. When we feel lonely, our keen floormates will accompany us. When we are sick, our keen floormates will take care of us even cook congee for us. When we are in a dilemma, our smart tutor and keen floormates will chat with us and help us make a better decision. Never feel lonely, never feel bored. Friendships between all the floormates warm others and ourselves. The activit ies in this fairyland i s funny and diverse. In non-regular floor gathering, we tried different food: Hong Kong style tong sui, Hunan home style dishes, western dessert and so on. Because of friendship and communication, the food was tasted more delicious. Sometimes, there are exciting shouts in the common room. That may be our game amateurs communicating via video games, or may be several friends exchanging the secrets. Here, in the fairyland, we can enjoy our private time as well as gathering time with our floormates. Our cute tutor Cherry and the fellow floormates are all magical magicians, making the hall life so colorful and unforgettable. The beautiful memory and life experience in the fairyland will not only be kept in our mind but also in one thousand and one nights. We are the wonderful fairy tale in JCAC!!!

Mid-autumn Festival

The Mid-autumn Festival celebration was jointly organized by all the halls in the student residence area. During the celebration, food, puzzles, games and lanterns can be seen all over the Multi-function Hall A.

It has always been the most interesting and meaningful event for the exchange students, as this is their first inter-hall activity, as well as their first-time experience to celebrate a traditional festival other than those of their own country. This year at the JCAC counter, exchange students were particularly fascinated by the balloons and face-painting games.

“Come on! Try out our Chinese opera face-painting! It is worth your time staying with us for the next half an hour!” Angel Yap, with a lot of face-painting pencils shouted around. “Come and have a look at our pictures. Pick one as your favorite; and we will help you to draw it onto your face!” Vivian Huang said to one of the exchange students. “Or maybe, do you want to learn making balloon cats and balloon dogs?” William Guanawan grabbed Michael, a Polish student who found the event exciting and fabulous to him.

It has always been the most interesting and meaningful event for the exchange students, as this is their first inter-hall activity...

One hour later, exchange students from the States, UK, Poland, France, Australia and

Sweden found themselves wearing a face like Chinese opera performers. “What an amazing evening with all the residents of JCAC at their counter! I am going to wear this cool face out to LKF!” said the last visitor of JCAC counter. His vote is essentially the last vote of the night, and rendered the JCAC performance awarded!

Hurray! We won! Again, JCAC began the favorite hall of the year in the Mid-autumn Festival!

Ninepin Island Trip

Not for this trip to the Ninepin Island on the 17 September 2011, an isolated yet marvelous island group located in the North-west of Hong Kong, we wouldn’t know JCAC offers all the residents such amazing experience of hiking and sight-

seeing.

Early in the morning, we got onto our cruise from TST, and began our unforgettable journey. The sun was shining in the happiest way and bringing to the earth its most gorgeous lighting. Listening to the sound of the cruise sailing ahead and the water padding upon the edge of the cruise, we couldn’t help but to take pictures of all the views on board. On the far end, there were the islands. The group of islands looked so isolated, with large amount of stones hanging right at the edge of the cliffs. The only way to get onto the island is to jump down from the cruise into a tiny little boat, and sail all the way to the only entrance of the island at the cliff.

Luckily, we all had a wonderful sea-food lunch at the beach before we got to know that we were heading towards such a difficult task. After putting on safety suits, we waited to jump into the little boats one by one. It was rewarding to go onto the island, even after spending so much effort. The view on the island is absolutely fantastic. On the far end, there was the bluest sky you could ever imagine. Closer to us, the sea waves sparkled and shined below our feet. Standing on the hardest rocks, we even took a picture lining up in the big shape of “4”.

How tired were we after a whole-day sailing and hiking? Well…”extremely” is the most appropriate word to use. Although we all fell asleep on the way back on the cruise, the sound of the water padding the edge of our cruise still brought about the most beautiful music on earth.

Multi-cultural Journey

Here came the Multi-cultural Journey! Being excited and curious, I went back quite early to our hall to join this banquet! The Festival is an activity of our Hall this year which aimed at promoting mutual cultural communications. Different floors had different themes of countries, and each floor would provide special food from a country or area. There was a competition among them. With such distinct activities and such a good chance to feast my stomach, I had no reason to miss this Festival! Well, let’s get moving!

As we knew, although all 11 floors were involved in the activity, the food was a ‘scarce resources’. How can we try all kinds of food on all the floors? Some suggested me start from the top floor so I could eat all way along to the bottom one! For I could not find any sense in this funny theory, I followed the ‘normal’ way from the bottom to the top. (I joke ^ ^)

Our first destination was Australia! As we went into the common room, the host friendly welcomed us and treated us with some featured snacks. After tasting the delicious food, we were asked to answer some easy but funny questions on the culture of their country. Although in fact we made a lot of wild guesses in this ‘quiz’, unbelievably we got a good mark and some bonus snacks.

Having tasted the benefits, we rushed to the second floor to seek the next tasty. The theme was Shang Hai and the hosts were my friend, Fanny and Bo Bo, and some of their friends. All of them were friendly and cute. The room was full of things. There were numbers of strings across the room and stripes of papers were attached to the strings with Chinese characters on. Guess what! Those were riddles! As for food, the hosts had prepared Bao Zi (Chinese bun), dumplings and Shao Mai (a kind of dim sum), which was my favorite. It seemed hard to have a bite on any of them because guests had to find out the answers of the riddles and learn to speak the name of these snack in Shanghainese before they could taste the food. My friend who came with me was good at playing riddles, but I would rather be quiet. (I did not eat much)

The next one was Hong Kong and the food was dessert. Among them I really love red bean porridges, which were sweet and warm like Hong Kong people. The fourth floor was Korea. We were provided with spicy rice cakes and an interesting game – kicking shuttlecock. It was a common game among Korean kids, and it was almost a featured activity in East Asia. After tasting the Korean kind of spice, we moved on to the next one, a different kind of spice in Pakistan! Ali kindly introduced the Pakistani snack, one of which was very hot! We also had a strange looking food which was a rubbery sweet, and was fairly sweet. And, further, another kind of spice was tasted at the tenth floor with the theme of Malaysia.

I did not miss the rest: Poland, America, Sweden and Denmark. On the eleventh floor, the Danish host introduced a unique snack from their country - Frikadeller. It was a flat, pan-fried dumpling stuffed with minced meat, which was made of pork, beef, oatmeal, egg, milk, onion, pepper, garlic and plenty of other things. So many ingredients made a special and unforgettable taste!

The activity ended with my full stomach. Oh wait! This was not the end. The winner of competition of the best floor for which was the best one had not been released. All of us crowded on the ground floor lobby, nervous and excited, waiting for the result.

” The third is ---------Australia!!!” "The second is-------Malaysia! and Shanghai” Screaming was all over the place!

“And the champian is-------------guess what?" “It’s-----Pakistan”

Clapping and screaming busted out again, “congratulations” was flying everywhere. Hugging and photographing filled the lobby till long.

This was one of my beautiful memory in hall 4 life. I love Hall 4!

High Table Dinner by Momo

Edited by Eric Wan Sem A

Every hall in the residence holds high table dinner annually but Hall 4 makes it special by holding it twice in a year. We have different themes and dress codes for the dinners. The one in

Semester A is more formal as we could see ladies and gentlements dressed like business executives. The theme of the high-table-dinner in this year is FIRE, whose Chinese name is “ 火樹銀花”.

The decoration perfectly matched the theme. A large and beautiful water painting hanging outside welcomed all the participants. The shining flowers hung in the ceiling were glittery stars in the darkest sky. The stage was also decorated by other shining stuff. It seemed like there was fire on the stage which was grand and wonderful.

High Table dinner is an event which can represent our special ABC culture the best. The honorable guest, Dr. Cheung Chor Yung gave us a great speech on how to deal with problems in our study and hall life, which helped the residents achieve academic excellence, cultivate academians' interests, as well as have a harmony hall life.

Then the preformance section did represent the “C”(Community Citizenship), because the residents from different areas all came to the stage to show their talent. Vivian from mainland China sang with ‘Fat guy’, a local resident. Gage, from Australia and a South Korea resident played guitar. Bringing the event to an end, a group of students preformed a very creative dance. In spite of the diversity of people, culture, and language, all the residents can respect and live happily with each other in Hall 4, where, to some degree, is a real home for most Academians.

The food was quite nice and the lucky draw section was always the most exciting.

Tonight was a great night for the residents to enjoy the meal, to learn the ways to establish themselve in our society, to know new friends, and to enjoy themselves.

It is a season of flower blooming. It is a season for all Academians to celebrate the 8th birthday of JCAC.

On March 25, Academians, together with our hall master, Mrs. Peggy Wong , as well as other honorable guests participated in a grand birthday party of JCAC in Multi-function Hall A. The theme of the party was “hundreds of happiness”, referring to a share of happiness with all participants regardless of their nationality, gender or age. Huge and colorful background painting, echoing lovely color balls hang down from the ceiling, made the party full of energy yet elegant.

After a brief opening statement made by three well-dressed hosts, the honorable guest - Captain Lee Kwok Wing - gave us a very interesting speech about communication skills. The Academians learned useful skills through several funny stories. The speech did bring a lot of thoughts and joy to the Academians.

The video made by the 7th Residents’ Association was fascinating and touching, presenting vivid and veridical hall life. From the snooker room to the computer room, from the common room to the laundry room, every single clip in the video reminded the Academians of their own unforgettable hall life. We memorized that in the warm family of JCAC, everyone shared the happy time. At the end of the video, the dancing Academians formed four Chinese characters “ 生 日 快 樂(Happy Birthday)”, showing their gratefulness towards all the memorable moments brought to them by JCAC.

The performances were also wonderful, bringing unforgettable memories. It was a real audio feast to hear the beautiful voice of Kinki and Vivian with the melodious piano accompaniment. The dancing performed by the 7th Residents’ Association made the party dynamic and alive. Finally, lucky draw brought the dinner to an end, yet brought it to the best of the time.

Happy Birthday, JCAC!! Thank you for giving all of us, the Academians, so many unforgettable happy memories!

The Academians’ Night is a half-yearly activity organized by the RTs and RAs at the start of each semester A, to provide an opportunity for all residents to make new friends and enjoy their hall lives.

The residents were divided into groups compring both old and new residents. Although they came from all over the world and spoke different languages, they had came together as one and shared the same identity as Academians from Hall 4. The first game was “Give Me What I Want” which required teamwork and contribution from all members of a group. Everyone had fun throughout this game. They talked and laughed while trying their best to win. In a relaxing atmosphere, the residents started to bond.

Then came a feast serving traditional Chinese dishes (tea eggs) , typical Hong Kong dishes(fishballs), Western dishes (pizzas and sandwiches) and desserts. Most of the them were prepared by the tutors and helpers. The food was so delicious that the residents finished every bit of it.

The games resumed after the dinner. “Seven Hands and Eight Feet” was the perfect game for the Academians to showcase their creativity. The groups came up with all kinds of postures to achieve the tasks: one carrying up another, one standing with his own hands, puting one’s feet onto another’s.

The last was “Getting the Chair”, an exciting game to both the devoted participants and the amused spectators. At the beginning, the participants were hesitant with their moves. As the circle became smaller, intensifying the competition, they began to run quicker.

The fantastic evening was wrapped up by the Lucky Draw. The fancy gifts made this session the favourite among the Academians.

During this joyous night, laughters and warmth filled the whole Multi-Functional Room A. The residents made new friends and learned about Hall 4. It had been an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Floor Decoration Competition by Joe ZhanEdited by Lawrence LauThe Floor Decoration Competition was held at the

end of September, which was a wonderful journey

for all Academians.

Before the judging and voting period (9th Sep, 2011),

each floor had been given 2 weeks to decorate.

All floors were decorated according to the main

theme of“Journey”. The total budget for each floor

was limited to $100 for the sake of environmental

friendliness. Despite the tight budget, every floor

spent great efforts to turn their ideas into reality.

It was an honor that we had 3 ex- Resi-

dence Tutors to be our judges, includ-

ing ex-Chief Residence Tutor, Gabriel

Ho. The assessment was based on

the criteria of artistry, environmental

friendliness, creativity,

economical, relevance

to the theme and partici-

pation. Judges also asked

questions regarding the

participation

of residents

to assist their

assessment.

The voting of

residents ac-

counted into the

final score. Presen-

tations from repre- sentatives of

each floor were made before the voting.

The presentations of Floors 4 and 6 were the high-

lights of the night. Floor 4 came up with the slogan

of “Big 4” and the theme of “Magic Journey”. They

decorated the floor with photos of Harry Potter

movie. Each resident was assigned to a college in

Hogwarts, Harry’s magic school. The residents even

assigned Gabriel Ho to the JCAC, a college that

they created for him.

The theme of Floor 6 was “Route 66”, the

famous “Mother Road” of the USA. All items

related to the road includ-

ing gas stat ions and

traffic lights were used

in their decoration.

The rest of the floors im-

pressed the audience

with their own innovative

ideas: the hand-painted

national flag, the stars and

night sky of Floor 5, the

rainbows of Floor 1 and

7 , the catchy slogan of

“we are binary” of Floor

2…… All floor represen-

tatives tried their best

with great enthusiasm to

earn votes.

Finally, the champion

was Floor 9, while Floor

4 and Floor 5 were the

1st and 2nd runners-up re-

spectively. Though there were only 3 winners,

the experience was a wonderful journey for

all. Everyone’s hard work paid off in beautify-

ing our home, JCAC.

Having been included in the

Professor Edmond Ko Cup

for the third year, the Inter-

hall football competit ion

had gained great audience

among the residence com-

munity. This year, the com-

petition, changing from 7-a-

side to 5-a-side, was held in

November.

Our hall team had started

preparation from October.

Recruitment of football players was never a difficult task in our hall; the number of people signed up on

the board in the lift speaks for itself. This commonly favoured sport had attracted the participation of

our local, mainland and also international students, who together had formed a strong

team. We had quite a number of practice sessions at the football pitches

a t S h e k Kip Mei Park and the Joint Sports Centre whereon our teamwork

was made perfect.

Finally there came the date of competition, 29th October

2 0 1 1 . O u r opponent was Alumni Civility Hall (Hall 3). Similar

t o u s , t h e y had also formed a team comprising interna-

t i o n a l a n d local students. Upon kick-off, our players had

found out that the opposing team was so well in maintaining

possession. Our players did try our best to make a breakthrough

from the situa- tion but it was fruitless. We were therefore under

attack almost in the whole match. Although we played a good defence

and our goalkeeper’s perfor- mance was exceptional, we conceded a few

goals under the strong attack exerted by our opponents. Anyway, we had a

wonder ful match with them and our players did brilliantly, demonstrating great

teamwork and sportsmanship on the pitch, although our team was eventually defeated and therefore

did not claim any prize in the competition this year.

Anyway, credit must be given to our player who had contributed great effort and time to our hall. Al-

though we gained no prize in the competition, all our team members had gained something that is way

more precious than any prize: friendship.

Although table tennis is small in size, the table tennis competition of Professor Edmond Ko Cup

has always been the most attractive match. It is attractive to JCAC residents, because we have

one of the strongest team among all the halls.

To win, the representatives of JCAC representatives spent a lot of efforts. The selection process

began two weeks before the match, and the training

lasted till the last day before the first match. On 15 Novem-

ber in 2011, the first match kicked-off. Jim from the 6th Floor

was the first one who nailed the match, easily and without

any hesitation! Hon Sze Tung, also from 6th Floor, stood very

bravely in front of the match table. This was the first time

she was selected to represent JCAC. Unluckily, she did not

win the second match. Yet, all the residents in the cheer-

i n g t e a m

were impressed by her courage and team spirit.

Although Alex Kwok Ming Ho and Jason Han

Hongzhao already did a very good job, it was

a pity that they were slightly defeated by Hall

5 in the third match. Cherry and Ip Yuen Tung,

both from 11th Floor, won the fourth match and

won the biggest applause of the night. Hilda

Ng Chi Wing and Brendan Cheong Kei, a mix of

experienced and freshman JCAC table tennis

representatives, became stars of the night. They

brought the match into the final game-point. With persistence and bravery, they led the team

into the semi-final!

In the Semi-final, the team competed against Hall 2. After a good start

by Jim, who easily nailed man’s single match, everyone of the team

was encouraged. Hon Sze Tung won the women’s single, and then Ja-

son with Alex won the men’s doubles. The women’s doubles from 11th

Floor, with Cherry and Tung defeated Hall 2, while Brendan and Hilda

remained invincible! JCAC entered the grand-final!

On 17 November, the team was competing against Hall 8, the strongest

table-tennis team in the residence. Yet, every member of the team

showed their greatest efforts, and together the team was a real fighter!

Although we were defeated at the very end, the team was the first one

to bring in a first runner-up to our hall this year.

We owe a lot of gratefulness to all the players, as well as the back-ups of Big Ming and Zhang

Jiahao!

competition took place in Jan

of 2012. I was very pleased to

see a lot of faces that I am

not quite familiar with during

the training sessions – faces

of international students and

Mainland students who are

exchanged to CityU during

S e m e s t e r B a n d s t a y i n g

at JCAC. Bes ides , Cher ry

Huang, 雨 婷 and 芳 賢 , three

exchange students

from Taiwan also joined us in the trainings.

Yet, regardless of how joyful and relaxing the

trainings were, the competition was always

fierce and made everyone of the hall nervous.

On the night of the competition, the audience

lined up on the side of the badminton court,

demonstrating the JCAC cheers and waving

the JCAC flag. Nervous, we all were. Despite that,

the representatives of JCAC seemed to be really calm and confident.

Inter-hall Badminton by Angel LiuEditor by Michael

Ar Kei was the player from JCAC of the women’s single matches, and she did

a good job fighting for JCAC. Then there came Ryan Lo, who always seems to

be slow in reaction in daily life, but to our surprise, Ryan was very devoted to

the game and highly concentrated. He was very quick in action that night. We

also had Pak Wai and Jenny Xue together presented to the JCAC audience

a game full of energy and spirit. Ar Butt and Ar Sin, and Cheng Pui Sin, did a

mixed match. Although having watched Ar Butt played pool before, I could not

imagine how well Ar Butt could play like a warrior on the badminton court!

Finally, Jiang Kai and Gao Yaodong, two male players, acted like one single

person on the court, and were very tough and strong. Although coming into

the court in the final round, bearing the pressure not to lose anymore, they did a

great job in remaining calm and trying their very best.

However, regretfully, luck was not with JCAC that night. Yet, in the small court,

we felt big strength.

The theme of this year was “celebrating the

diversity”. Melinda, an exchange student from

Sweden, sent us a black-and-white picture with

marvelous mixture of lights and shadows. Just like

what she showed in the photo, Hong Kong is a

beautiful city full of di-

versity. Not to mention Li Zhuo, a Mainland student majoring in pho-

tography, sent us series of photos with great creativity, including a

photo with traditional styled Hong Kong tenement buildings by the

sides of IFC.

Also, we named a group of pictures taken by Crystal and Percy as

“ 邂 逅 ”, which tells a story about how Percy met a pair of minority

siblings and built up friendship with them.

The picture of Peggy, Alex and Gage definitely showed great di-

versity. The two Australian boys, who won the Multi-cultural Journey

in Semester A, were sharing their joy with our hall master Peggy, a

Hong Kong lady.

The picture taken by Larry during the Ninepin Island trip is also an

imaginative masterpiece. The students on the trip formed a shape

of “4” on the top of the cliff, and Larry took it from the top of the scene. Surrounded by the

bluest water and sky, viewers cannot help to be attracted by this pic-

ture.

At last, Ding Ding’s idea of taking photos of four different circles, the

watch, the Ferris’ Wheel, the chain of beads, and a nail, and John-

son’s idea of naming them “ 圓。 was an absolutely

fantastic combination! This series of pictures with great photo-taking

techniques and best ideas in naming finally

won us the best story category of the competition!

With the efforts of all the participants and the tutors, JCAC finally

got our way through Edmond Ko Cup and won our first Champion!

" A C A D E M I A N S , W E A R E C O R N W A L L L I O N S . Career Life and Life in CareerJCAC Alumni Sharing Session on Career Planning in

by Chris Chu Edited by Lawrence Lau

The sharing session on career advice presented by Jockey Club Academy Hall was successfully held on 13rd March, 2012. Alumni of Jockey Club Academy Hall who are currently working in Hong Kong shared their work experiences.

The alumni all have different career paths: Mr. Bob Ho who used to be a JCAC Provisional RA Member currently work as AIA Portfolio Manager, Miss. Mia Liu who was a JCAC Residence Tutor

is now a manager of Hong Kong Airline and Ms. Fion Poon, the former JCAC RA President has become a Cabin Crew Member of Cathay Pacific.

They delivered speeches to residents from different halls. The sharing session was themed as “Working in Hong Kong and Individual Career Plan of Graduates of CityU”. The alumni mainly talked about how to choose jobs and how to correlate the job with personal development. Other aspects of working wee also mentioned, including applying for working visa in Hong Kong as a non-local graduate.

Mr. Zhang, a current JCAC resident from China, commented that the talk was very meaningful and inspiring for those planning to work in Hong Kong after his graduation. Some other local students also showed their interest during the talk as they had to apply for jobs in the coming future.

JCAC maintains its tradition of holding these sharing sessions and seminars since its founding. Inviting alumni and letting them share their life after university provides current residence a chance to gain some insight of working life. It also encourages the graduates to think more about their future. This is just one of the many good traditions of JCAC and we are here to inherit this merit of our hall.

Academic Talk

by Joe Zhang Yuzhu Edited by Angel Liu

----------------- Cherry

Special Alumni: Debby & 達叔 Farewell Party

Questions:

1. How long was the preparation process? What difficulties have you six encountered during the process?

2. What date was the trip? Who attended it?

3. What kind of new insights as to ecology and environmental protection did the trip brought to the participants of the trip?

4. What are the comments the participants gave to the trip?

5. Who or what event left you the most unforgettable impression during the whole process?

Answer to Q1 (Olivia, Liu Qianyun)

The whole preparation process lasted about two months. We began to work on the project in February. After carrying out investigations and discussion, we decided to choose the Wetland Park as our destination. We arranged a pre-trip on 11th Feb and inspected the surroundings of the Wetland Park by ourselves. There are lots of difficulties we encountered during preparation. Firstly, we had to find a green group in Hong Kong. We sent emails to various Green Groups but none of them were interested in cooperating with us. Secondly, we struggled to find enough participants for the activity at first. We sat at lobby and asked every person entering into the door whether they would like to come. Fortunately all the efforts have paid off.

Answer to Q2-3 (Sylvia, Gao Si)

Eighteen students including two exchange students enthusiastically joined us and made this trip on the end of March. The scenery in Wetland Park in spring was breath-taking as the flowers were blossoming. While listening to the introductions, a breeze blew the leaves to the ground. It was meaningful to appreciate the aesthetics of plants for the purpose of ecology protection. It makes a person feel closer to the nature and show more respect to it. No one would ever want to destroy the nature after appreciating its beauty.

Answer to Q5 (Sokiya, Suo Jie)

The most exciting and special part of the whole wetland trip should be the eco-friendly knowledge competition. We prepared a set of questions for participants to answer during the trip and a present for the winners. Finally, the second group led by Zhang Yuzhu became the champion. It resulted from their attention and curiosity. They listened to the tour introductions carefully and took notes all along the trip. Apparently, the competition stimulated participants’ interest in exploring the knowledge of the nature and their engagement in the event.

4-6F A day in Disneylandby Angel Liu

Edited by Eic Wan

The kids also discovered a big fountain in the middle of the lake, and started to stand on huge rocks so as to see the fountain.

Yet everyone of us started to get really crazy when we were running towards the entrance of the Disneyland Resort. Every kid was shouting out their favorite place in Disneyland and pointing on the guiding booklet to plan our tr ips in Disneyland. And the most unforgettable memory was when the kids started to run in full speed towards the staff of Disneyland from whom they could get a Disneyland sticker. Taking "Space Mountain" with the kids is unforgettable as well: while the kids were shouting and screaming aloud, we were trying our best to hold the kids tight in our arms.

It was tiring yet really worthwhile to spend a whole day with the kids. Not only does JCAC feels like home, but also every kid with residents of JCAC got to can share our passion and our caring towards the bigger home, our society.

Organizers: Kim, Freezer and小蜻蜓 !

In the morning, when the kids walked up to our coach, we couldn't help but

kept waiving to the kids from inside the coach window. They seemed a bit shy and unsettled at first. Yet, our "cold jokes" soon started to break the ice.

When the sign of "Disney Resort" got noticed by the kids, every kid started to get really excited about the trip. They started sharing their thoughts on Disneyland with us. And we started to be named as "子子烟囱哥哥" or "北极熊哥哥".

Our first stop of the ecological trip was the Inspiration Lake. At the lake, Sasa and Hoi Ting introduced to the kids the names, the origins, and the contributions of the trees around the pool. Then, the kids discovered a golden mushroom and started to gather around to "study" the mushroom.

It has been a long year of working with all members in my hall book team! Not until when you are reading this article, will you be able to get a general idea of how hall book was

made.

We have a team of reporters, who are the youngest, the most energetic and the most patient members of the hall. Whenever hall event was coming, text messages or emails were crazily sent out from me to them, confirming with each reporter his or her availability. Sometimes, these reporters have to undertake reporting tasks at the very last minute – during the event, because I simply spot them on the scene and arrange them to write up a report about the event right afterwards. Therefore, it is my great pleasure and honor to have all the reporters working with me in the team.

After the reports are done drafting reports, the editors would diligently edit the reports word by word, making them into fluent, accurate articles that are easy to read. I am sincerely grateful to all the editors, as they all did wonderful job. Not only were they attentive to the details, but they were also the ones who are always able to follow strictly with our publication schedule. Therefore, they deserve a thumb-up!

Last but definitely not the least, the designers are incredible! They have to be the last to start working on their assigned tasks, while their tasks are definitely the most difficult ones. Not only did they have to be patient enough to cater all the details, but they were requested by me to unify their styles as well as to make amendments on their work from time to time. The designers were still fighting with the page layouts during the last three weeks of the semester, postponing their own assignment and revision tasks to the last one week.

What was this hall book made of? Well, thoughts and creativity, sacrifice and contribution, laughter and tear, and above all, large amount of time and efforts devoted into their work by each hall book team member, which I have to proudly tell every resident of JCAC: THIS is “Made in JCAC”!
