A Precious Hour Of My Life

Thank you all for placing your confidence and trust in me to

serve as the President for Halliburton Toastmasters Club for

the year 2013-14. With strong support from new EX-CO

members (VPE, VPM, VPPR, Secretary, Treasurer, SAA and

committee members), we are committed to bring the club to

next level. Our club was recognized as a “DISTINGUISHED

CLUB” for the year 2012-2013. Instead of focusing on our

weaknesses and trying to minimize or overcome them, the

Toastmasters program works by helping us to identify and

build on our strengths. After all, no one is good at everything,

but chances are that you are great at a few things. By

participating in Toastmasters club, you build speaking as well

as leadership skills. This reminds me of a quote from Henry

Ford,

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress.

Working together is success.”

Our Club meets every Thursday from 1:30 pm – 2:30pm. You

can join us as a guest at any meeting and you will experience

lot of fun in learning public speaking skills.

From Editor’s Desk

Friends,

I take this opportunity to connect with you all. A rainbow is a beautiful

epitome of a perfect blend of colors. The rainbow is indeed a creativity of

the Almighty- truly His magnum opus.

Each color in the rainbow signifies how Toastmasters has helped each one of us at Halliburton to infuse Passion, bring up Confidence, some Fun learning, a perfect Balance of words, attain Excellence, nurture Creativity and expand our limits of Imagination. Each of these qualities are like the beads connected together by a mesmerizing rainbow called Toastmasters!

The brilliant and vibrant colors of the rainbow bring out the shades of our most coveted qualities.

Toastmasters has helped us bring out our creativity. Here we offer you the celebration of colors. Feel the euphoria; take time to savor the creativity.

I highly applaud the participation of almost every member of our club towards bringing up of this newsletter. Your continuous feedback and support is like the canvas of sky, which will help keep this rainbow afloat.

Life is beautiful, so are you..

Cheers,

Nitin Katke

Colors are the smiles of nature and the RAINBOW is a way to express them. Mere

color, unspoiled by meaning and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in

a thousand different ways. Color is a powerful and important communication tool

and it is tied to religious, cultural, political and social influences.

Each color reflects a personality of human life. Colors can influence our emotions, our

actions and how we respond to various people, things and ideas.

When these colors come together in the clear sky, they form a spectacular rainbow.

And when people come together with different ideas, thoughts and abilities, they

form TOASTMASTERS club.

Wassily Kandinsky a Russian painter was one of the pioneers who put forth this

relationship between colors and the various qualities that we possess..

Red – Passion and Energy

Orange- Confidence

Yellow – Clarity of thought

Green – Poise, Perfect blend

Blue – Listening

Indigo – Creativity

Violet – Imagination

Color is a complex subject with many strands and it has the power to subliminally

convey values, thoughts and ideas. Gaurav Gupta

color is holiest,

the most

divine, the

Sailing Towards Excellence

Atul Bokane, CC – Halliburton Toastmasters Club

“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.””

March 22nd, 2007! That was the day when I was first introduced to Toastmasters in

Carrollton Technology Centre, USA. Being a fresh engineer and part of a new team, my

mentor Mr. Ron McGregor inducted me to Toastmasters program to hone my

speaking and leadership skills.

Each week I learned new techniques- goal setting and purpose, vocal variety

and persuasion. The practical way to become better at something is to do it.

Many people list public speaking as their biggest fear. The only way to

overcome fear is to face it, face it again and again. Isn’t that the simplest

formula to attain expertise?

Toastmasters has made me a different person. I rarely get nervous anymore

delivering speeches and my speaking abilities continue to improve day per day.

Toastmasters has taught me valuable leadership skills. I have been President,

Vice President of Education, Vice President of Membership, and Treasurer

during my association with Toastmasters. And needless to say, these are just

milestones in my journey towards excellence

I am Passionate About Improving My

Speaking Skills...

Nisha Pandya CC– Halliburton Toastmasters Club

In life, we meet so many people and spend our quality time together. Do we always remember their names? Not really! What we remember is how passionate they are about what they do. HTC Toastmasters club gave me a platform to participate in international speech contest where I could showcase my communication skills; thus helping me improve presentation as well as leadership skills. One of the memorable moments in my life is when I won the first prize in club and Area level international speech contest in 2011. I was second runner up in table topic contest held at club level in year 2012. HTC Toastmasters club encouraged and supported me to get the title of competent communicator adding one more feather in my hat. I feel proud to be part of such a dynamic club. I will assure to achieve more milestones in future. Every meeting is like an energy booster! I still feel eager and passionate to participate in Toastmaster meetings and work on improving my public speaking abilities. It’s just the beginning!

Page 8: Halliburton tm club newsletter sept2013

My journey with Toastmasters started in 2009. My first impression was

“interesting concept, should give it a try”

However, my excitement led me to my first not so good speech- “The Ice

Breaker”. My first speech was a complete disaster because I couldn’t speak

about myself for 6 minutes. Not that I didn’t know about myself but because I

had memorized everything that I wanted to speak. So this was a non-stop flight

that crash landed within 4 minutes.

TM Transformed Me Into A Confident Speaker

This is when Toastmasters helped me develop as a communicator by mastering lessons in time management. The

method of speak-think-speak (and no more memorizing stuff) and minimal use of fillers truly worked from me.

Likewise, table Topic sessions helped me transform into a better communicator.

My achievements as a Toastmasters were not limited to achieving the goals of CC and CL. Toastmasters primarily

helped me overcome my introvert nature to a very large extent. Halliburton Toastmasters Club is not just another club

where you meet and learn – the focus on “People Development” is prime. After all, a confident individual is a

confident speaker and a leader, isn’t it?

Combo of Passion, Learning and Mutual Growth

Toastmasters is a perfect mixture of continuous learning and fun. I have

decided to be a part of this great initiative to improve my general speaking

ability and other soft skills. The meetings are well organized and roles are

clearly defined in Toastmasters manuals. Fellow members are very receptive

and are always ready to help each other to attain the common goal. The

journey so far has been enriching. I have enjoyed taking up all the roles that

I chose to take up. It also gives me a refreshing break from the daily project activities while improving

interpersonal skills. I am certain that everyone within the club feels the same. I am also sure that this combo

of passion, learning and mutual growth will work wonders for me. Thank you my fellow Toastmasters.

Building a State of Mind

I have been a member of Toastmasters Club since September. I am getting

comfortable with public speaking - thanks to the training offered by the

club. I watched and listened to the speeches of other members. When the

seniors were speaking, I was very nervous because I was imagining that in a

couple of days, I would be standing on the stage and speaking. How would I

be speaking? What would I be saying? Imagining this made me shiver. The

solution - building the state of mind of a Toastmasters will definitely come

to the rescue. As they rightly say, “In Toastmasters club, do as the

Toastmasters do !”

As expressed in its mission statement, the Toastmasters Club provides “a mutually supportive and positive

learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership

skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.” I really enjoy being a Toastmaster!

The Balancing Act

Public speaking is very common part of our lives. So, we start to believe that the way

we speak is mostly correct. Also, the people who listen to us do not point out

mistakes in our speech as they feel it may offend us. We often tend to use words

improperly, inadequately or even excessively. I believe the best speeches ever are

the ultimate recipe of the basic element- WORD. I’m here to get better and better at

this balancing act.

I attended my first Toastmasters club meeting as a guest about two months ago. I realized that it was the right

place to learn the art of public speaking in a very healthy environment. So, I decided to join the club in the first

meeting itself. I have already learned many speaking skills in the Toastmasters club and have delivered the ice

breaker speech. It has increased my self-confidence to speak in front of a group of people.

I feel very lucky to be a part of Toastmasters club and that assures me that my equilibrium point is not far away

Mastering the Blend of Impromptu and Prepared Speech

I recently got a feel of “The Toastmasters club”. “Wow” that was the only word I

could utter. What a blend of impromptu and prepared speech. I definitely wanted

to master this blend.

I have spoken twice in the table topic sessions which are all about impromptu

thinking and expressing yourself in a given time of two minutes. It’s a fun session,

totally a surprise for you. .

“The Ice Breaker” was my first step to come out and speak just about myself to showcase the qualities that I

already possess as a speaker. It gave me a stage where I got valuable feedback on my speech and helped learn

and improve from my mistakes

With each successfully completed project, I plan to overcome my weaknesses and have a proper balance to be a

magician of words. This poise will, for sure, help me to get over stage fear, nervousness by connecting well with

the audience.

When I joined Halliburton, I again got familiar with Toastmasters Club. I realized that this is what I was looking for-

a platform where I can experiment on my skills and nourish them with the help of feedbacks from other

Toastmasters. This time I grabbed the opportunity and joined Halliburton Toastmasters club. Sessions like

Speeches, Table Topics, and Evaluation etc help me to develop soft skills. Toastmasters have helped me find the

last piece of the jigsaw puzzle. I feel complete now and my life is balanced.

My Life Is Now Balanced..

I got introduced to Toastmasters in 2006 when I joined TCS . I had just 3+ years of

experience in IT career then. That time, I ignored it just because I thought I really

don’t need extra burden. I simply said no to a colleague who asked me to join

Toastmasters club.

Slowly I was growing professionally and developing leadership skills. But certainly,

there was a thought in my mind that something is missing and my life is not

balanced.

My Two Cents Worth...

Chandana Erande

The thing that will strike an outsider who attends Halliburton Toastmasters

meeting for the first time is the beautiful ambience. Two inter-

joined conference rooms, the plush chairs and the dominating projector

screen add to the aura around this very well established Toastmasters club in

Pune. The humility of the club members withholds the fact that Halliburton

is one of the oldest corporate clubs in Pune. Guests were welcomed by the

smiles of the club members and the Toastmasters banners put up at

strategic places.

A good participation by the members and particularly the ladies ensured that the ambience was cheerful. The

meeting was systematic, interesting and educational. It had a good mix of novice speakers and seasoned

Toastmasters taking center stage. The use of technology was evident with the Table Topics being conducted via the

power point presentations!

I think that if the current executive council for the club keeps up its enthusiasm level, then the club can grow

remarkably. Looking at them, others from the company will get further attracted to the club and hence ensure that

there is a steady stream of guests and outsiders attending meetings. Participation in events and other club

meetings by the current members will also ensure that Halliburton Toastmasters Club stays in the limelight. This will

in turn, motivate the members and spread the benefits of Toastmasters to one and all.

There is a legacy of Area Governors and successful Presidents from the club that has been passed on over the

years. But it’s time Halliburton Toastmasters write its new history instead of basking in its past glory.

Page 13: Halliburton tm club newsletter sept2013

Attending your club meeting made my belief stronger in Toastmasters. You have managed to make a smooth

process which helps you deliver memorable and productive meetings. Even though I am a 2 yr old kid in TM world,

still I can vouch for the practices you follow. It is an example for other clubs. I have suggested to other clubs in my

Area a few good practices that you follow. These include laminated templates being given to the role players of

the meeting, using word of the day mandatorily in Table Topics.

As promotional activities, you have to attract guests and turn them into members are very creative and innovative.

The world is hungry for more. However, also important is to keep moving along the communication and leadership

tracks since that will be a good testimonial to the effort involved and the progress in the journey.

Speaking about the executive committee, the team in a whole is very passionate, responsive and eager to

implement any suggestion they receive to make club meetings a better experience for the members.

Your club is in its 5th year and I have presented you with a “challenge to solve” like you do at your work too. Let’s

make this year special by winning the Golden Gavel award and being the President’s Distinguished Club.

I am confident you will work as a team, give speeches, log awards and grow together.

Toast Masters I will Miss you...

As a former member of Halliburton Pune Toastmasters club, it’s a pleasure talking

about my journey with this club. I have been associated with this club for about three

years. I have always wanted to master public speaking in a fun cum friendly

environment. Toastmasters gave me exactly that! I participated in several events

organized by the club. This includes regular weekly meetings, potluck lunches, team

building activities, festival celebrations, team outings and various contests.

I must say that apart from routine ongoing work, Halliburton Toastmasters Club

activities gave me lots of insight into public speaking and fun. I have seen the club

growing with so many enthusiastic individuals. I was fortunate to be a part of such an

energetic club. The club members are now regular contestants at district level

contests. Despite numerous entries and exits; the club activities never slowed down. In fact they are leading to

betterment. I wish the Club more and more fun and success in the years to come.

Humorous speech contest held on 29th Aug 13 was an extravagant ride of

laughter. We witnessed some of the best speeches. TM Vishwajit Ghatge

won 2nd position at Area Level and Division level. His speech was simply a

roller-coaster ride of laughter. Hats off to Vishwajit... Heartiest

Congratulations!!

Table Topics at Club level was imagination at its best... Speakers came up

with best ideas they could while speaking impromptu. It was an

excellent contest that we witnessed this year. We have earned few

excellent speakers in new members and we hope to see more flare in

our club in coming years.
