Ingredients:

- Small fruits such as strawberries, grapes, or sliced

apples

- White chocolate, milk chocolate, or dark chocolate

- Paraffin wax

Step 1: Melt 8 ounces of chocolate and add a walnut-

Step 3: Dip the fruit into the chocolate and immedi-

ately drag the excess chocolate on a wax paper. Use a

toothpick to swirl the end of the ghost’s tail.

Step 4: After the chocolate hardens on the fruit, dab

on mouth and eyes with the flat end of a toothpick.

*Note: If the chocolate is too thin, let it cool longer. If it gets

too thick, heat it up again.

ScaryHalloween

EncountersHalloween comes and goes, but there are some experiences that we can never forget. From childhood scare to “that wasn’t scary at all,” the memories continue to last in our minds. Students around campus shared stories about their scary Halloween encounters.

“When I was 10 years old, my mom allowed me to go out trick-or-treating alone. I was so excited to go by myself. While walking to my friend Josh’s house, this guy walking behind me started calling me. The weird thing was that he wasn’t calling my name. Instead he called me “Alan.” I was so scared that I ran as fast as I could to get away from the guy. The next thing I knew, he started running too. As I was running, all I could think about was, “Am I going to escape this guy alive?” Then he grabbed me by the shoulder and told me, “You’re in big trou-ble.” I started to panic, but at the same time, he realized that I wasn’t the person he was looking for. It turned out that his son was wearing the same Halloween costume as I. That was one experience I will not forget!”

Matther Cruz, sophomore

“I woke up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water. When I came back to my room, my radio suddenly turned on, changed stations, and then turned off. I didn’t know what was going on. Then I just went back to sleep.”

Angel Turcio, junior

Daysi Becerril, senior“My friends and I were out trick-or-treating early. Because I have had a fear of clowns since I was a kid, I was trying to avoid seeing any clowns. As to my horrible luck, out from the shadows came this nasty, rainbow colored, creep-look-ing clown with razor sharp teeth carrying a club with rusted nails sticking out. When I saw him, he wasn’t walking toward us, but the next thing I knew, the clown started approaching. I started to panic and let out this huge scream at the top of my lungs. Then I bolted to the nearest house to get away. My friends chased me down to assure me that the clown wasn’t going to do any harm to us, so we kept on walking. We lost the clown for a few minutes, but then it reappeared once again out of nowhere! This time, instead of screaming, I started to laugh. To make the situation even worse, Adriana’s brother, Richard Castaneda, kept making fun of me and tried to scare me unex-pectedly every 5 minutes. Even to this day I am still scared of seeing that clown walking down the street.”

Ivan Wang, junior“I was out trick-or-treating in a really crowded neighborhood with my sister. All the houses gave out small pieces of candy, so I went down a small street with fewer people. My sister stayed at the corner of the street because she thought the street was haunted. While I was walking, a black cat crossed in front of me. Then a branch snapped off the tree I was standing under and fell on me. It was dark, so the irst thing I did was scream. Then I ran up the street.”

Freaky Superstitions-After having a bad dream, go without speak-ing to brush your teeth. After that, you can start speaking again and your dream will not come true

-If you see a spider in the morning, it means good luck, so you shouldn’t kill it. However, if you see one at night, it means bad luck, so you can kill it.

-If a bird lies into your house, it’s a sign of a coming death.

-If you have your eyes closed when you are washing your hair, most likely a ghost is watch-ing you.

-If you dream of death, it’s a sign of birth. If you dream of birth, it’s a sign of death.

-Dropping an umbrella on the loor means that there will be a murder in the house.

-If you leave a rocking chair rocking when empty, it invites evil spirits to come into your house to sit in the rocking chair.

The jack-o‛-lantern is a fun element of the Halloween celebration that should not be left out.

The traditional and memorable pumpkin lantern is quite simple to create. With these easy-to-fi nd tools and simple steps, carving

a pumpkin will be a piece of cake!

- Large boning knife - Small paring knife- Large spoon or ice cream scoop- Dry erase marker or grease pencil

by: Connor Lee

1. Wipe down pumpkin. It may have excess dirt that can make the carving process more diffi cult. Th en let the pumpkin dry.

2. Cover work space with the news-paper and put on an apron. Carving a pumpkin gets to be a messy task. Let’s not get furniture or clothes all sticky.

3. Draw a circle (or any shape) around the stem with a marker. As an alterna-tive, you may draw a circle at the bot-tom of the pumpkin to make it easier to replace the candle.

4. Take the boning knife and cut along the drawn lines. Point the blade toward the center of the pumpkin’s lid at a 45 degree angle. Th is is to pre-vent the lid from falling in.

5. Remove the lid and empty the pumpkin’s pulp using a large spoon or ice cream scoop. Place the seeds in a bowl if you plan to roast them later or dispose of them.

6. Scrape the insides of the pumpkin with the spoon to keep it clean. If more of the inside is scraped, more light will shine through the pump-kin when lit. Remember to scrape the bottom of the pumpkin to provide a fl at surface for the candle.

7. Use the marker to draw your jack-o’-lantern’s face. Dry erase markers or grease pencils should be easy to wipe away if mistakes are made.

8. Use the paring knife to cut the lines you have drawn. Use your fi ngers to push the pieces out. 9. Place a candle in the pumpkin and light it. Now your jack-o’-lantern is complete!

- Newspaper- Damp cloth or paper towel - Pumpkin able to stand on its own- Candle and lighter

The rich culture that makes up this city has greatly contributed to its ghostly be-ings. Chinatown alone is fi lled with tons of ghost tours, stories, and eerie folklore. The city is also fi lled with various haunted hotels that are sure to give you the creeps. One of San Francisco’s most notorious haunted landmarks is the island of Alcatraz. This former prison is claimed to be haunted by the spirits of former inmates.

1) San Francisco, California:

2) Key West, Florida:

Although this sunshine state may not appear to be the most likely site for ghosts to linger, Key West is home to some of the oldest and creepiest stories. Key West was once a huge lynching ground for many pirates and other criminals who are believed to still haunt the premises today.

3) Portland, Oregon: This city has developed the repution as the most haunted city in the Pacifi c North-west. There have been a number of ghost sightings throughout the city. One of Port-land’s most famous haunted landmarks is the Pittock Mansion. It was built in 1914 by a wealthy businessman and his wife. Shortly after being built, the couple died. Visitors claim to hear footsteps in empty rooms, see doors or windows open on their own, and most bizarre, a portrait of Mr. Pittock is constantly changing location, moving from room to room on its own.

1. Get plenty of practice beforehand—Call of Duty Zombie Mode anyone?

2 Shotguns—No, no, no, handguns, amethrowers, machine guns, nuclear weapons, and barricades won’t work on zombies.

3. Quickly establish an elaborate political system that involves a full-blown constitution,

and elected o cials with limited terms—you could revert to savagery, dictatorship, the use of

demagogues, communism, and internal discord.

4. Use the buddy system. Don’t be a dummy though. If your buddy is bi en by a zombie, shoot

him in the head and get it over with.

5. Act like a zombie. Zombies won’t eat other zombies. The vacant stare, drooling, and inco-

herent mumbling obtained from 3 days of all-nighters will make you t right in.

6. If you get bi en, keep it a secret. While you were ghting o the last wave of zombies with your bare hands, you took one for

the team. Luckily, it’s not noticeable and can be covered with a shirt. It’s just a scratch anyway. No need to make a big deal out of it.

7. Find a safe zone.

8. There is no safe zone—Regardless of what the military, o cials, and rumors say, the so-called,

zombie-free haven does not exist. Zombies somehow always manage to nd a

way to in ltrate and infect any area where humans exist. Plus, who wants to

embark on a long, dangerous quest where half your party will die?

Cheetah prints have been popular for many years. If you are thinking about dressing up as a cheetah, a cat, a leopard, or anything along those lines, this is a perfect look for you.

What you’ll need:

- Pencil, liquid, or eyeliner- Eye shadow primer- Different shades of brown eye shadow

by: Judy Samatmanakit

- Prime your face and apply foundation.

- Darken and define your brows.

- Apply eye shadow base all over your lids.

- Use a golden/light brown eye shadow to highlight the inner corners of your eyes and the center of your lids.

- Use a brown eye shadow for the outer corner of your eyes.

- Define your crease line with a dark brown eye shadow.

- Using a liquid/pencil liner, draw a cheetah print all over the lids.

With Halloween coming up, now is a good time to get caught up on scary thrillers to watch with your circle of friends. If you’re a fan of all things horror and mind-bending, chances are that the Chiller Network is a part of your top ten cable channels. For the fans of these horrifying flicks, the Chiller Network published a list of the “Top 13 Scariest Films of the Decade” during a recent broadcast special. Although everyone has his or her own list of favorite bone chilling films, here’s what they listed:

#13 Drag Me to Hell Synopsis: All the terrifying things that happen to main character Christine Brown were caused by a woman named Mrs. Ganush and her refusal for a home loan extension. Christine’s once simple life will be forever haunted by that curse.

#12 The Strangers (2008)

Synopsis: Imagine a relaxing vacation in a summer home. Now imagine three masked strangers ter-rorizing you in said summer home with no means of escape. That is what director Bryan Bertino created in this 2008 film.

#11 Final Destination (2000)Synopsis: The beginning of what would become a giant franchise, the first installment in the series introduces viewers to seven teenagers who escape death due to a premonition, only to find out you can’t cheat death.

#10 Orphan (2008)

#8 Hostel(2005)

Synopsis: After tragedy strikes Sarah as her daughter and husband are both killed, her friends decide to help her get over it by taking a trip. The trip takes these six women into an underground cavern in America where the unknown and uncharted become a challenge for their lives against those who dwell in the caves.

Synopsis: Young college students go backpacking in Europe only to be lured to a sick business where customers pay to murder strangers. These students become unlucky victims. Blood, guts, and plenty of gore ensue. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Synopsis: A couple adopts a seemingly young orphan named Esther. While the couple’s biologi-cal daughter welcomes her, their son is skeptical of Esther. As the film progresses and Esther becomes involved in freak accidents, it turns out that she has more skeletons in her closet than the family previously assumed.

#9 The Descent (2005)

by Amber Alvela#7 30 Days Of Night (2007)

#6 Cloverfield (2008)

Synopsis: People in an Alaskan town experience a 30-day polar night where the sun disappears for a month. No one was expecting vampires to take advantage of this environmental phenomenon. To make matters worse, these vampires aren’t of a sparkling nature either. The vamps make Edward Cullen look like he has plastic fangs and is made of fluff.

#5 28 Days Later (2002)

Synopsis: A giant monster (no, not Godzilla) attacks New York City and protagonist Rob must survive in order to save Beth. The movie, presented in a “found footage” style similar to that of the “Blair Witch Project”, presents viewers with the eerie feeling that they are experiencing the movie and events firsthand.

#4 The Mist(2008)

Synopsis: It’s been 28 days since Jim has been in a coma. He awakens to find that Britain is infested with people infected by the “rage” virus. Similar to classic zombie flicks, it only takes one bite to infect the living. Jim attempts to survive this revelation as he encounters other survivors trying to make their way to a safe haven.

Synopsis: Based on the horror novel written by Stephen King, the movie kicks off in Bridgton, Maine where a thunderstorm rakes through the small town, forcing people to seek supplies in the supermar-ket. The people in the market include main character David Drayton and his eight-year old son Billy. As an unusual mist envelopes the town, concealing deadly monstrosities, supermarket inhabitants become desperate for a way out. Tensions among neighbors rise and the never ending debate of who should be the first to go begins.

#3 SAW (2004)Synopsis: In what would become the first of many sequels, SAW is centered on the antagonist Jigsaw who wishes to play a “game” with people whom he deems ungrateful for life. The “game” provides victims with a choice where their lives and the ones they love hang in the balance.

#2 Paranormal Activity (2008)

Synopsis: Another film presented to viewers in a “found footage” style, this terrifying picture focuses on Katie and Micah who feel haunted by a presence in their home. In hopes of discover-ing what haunts them, they set up cameras in rooms to catch the paranormal activity on film. It’s what isn’t shown that really terrifies viewers.

#1 The Ring (2002)Synopsis: This movie follows the plot of a cursed videotape that shows whoever watches it a series of seemingly unrelated images. Thereafter, anyone who watches the tape receives a phone call with a young girl’s chilling voice telling them that they have seven days to live. The main character, Rachel, is asked to investigate a death cause by that phenomenon after a family friend becomes a victim of it.

Happy Halloween! First off, the entire journalism staff would like to wish you a spooky and safe Halloween this year, and we hope

that this edition of A La Mode got you in the Halloween spirit. This edition is obviously inspired by all that scares and thrills us this October, added together with a little Los Altos flare. When we first came up with the idea of publishing a Halloween themed magazine, we weren’t sure if we could make our deadline. However, thanks to our staff, we were able to pull through and create a magazine that is completely opposite from the last edition in spring 2011. Thanks to all the feedback we got from the last issue of A La Mode, we were able to respond to what students said they liked and disliked. We really wanted to incorporate themes and entertainment that our fellow Conquerors would enjoy, so we thought Halloween would be perfect. It’s a bit hard to cater to all the different personalities and styles we have here on campus, but we tried. All we really want is for our peers to enjoy what they see.
