Sheep
A good number of cull ewes saw a competitive trade. Top today was Tom
Hannaford of Whitstone, Holsworthy with his Texel x to £96 & £90
respectfully. AR Hooper of Pengold, Boscastle saw his best a pen of Suffolk x
Ewes to £88.50 with regular consigner R Vosper of Warbstow to £86 for Hill x
Ewes and a run of rough full ewes for P Bloomfield top out at £66 and a
second pen to £55.
Couples
Still plenty about with top today
at £158 for Mr T Martin,
Treveighan, St Teath with Dorset x

292 Cattle
A great day at Hallworthy with 292 cattle through the ring. Sun shining on
a very enthusiastic ring of buyers.
Steers
Top call today went to the native breeds with Mr GA Hatch of Launceston
with his annual run of Hereford x Steers & Heifers. His best a bunch of 4
at £1185 and a second group of 3 x £1140. Mr C Broom of Mawgan Porth
ran in next with a run of outwintered Limousin x Steers with his top end to
£110. SE & J Eastley of Looe again got amongst the top end with a well
grown Simmental x Steer to £1100. PJ Collett of Boscastle came in next
with the top end of his run a pair of British Blue x Steers to £1065. RR
Sanders & Son of St Blazey saw the front end of his run of 68 Hereford x
British Friesian Steers & Heifers top to £1020 for a bunch of 8. Mr AG
Cowling with a South Devon x Steer saw his top to £1070.
Heifers
Top of this section was Mr WC Davey of Delabole with an Aberdeen Angus
heifer with plenty of scope. She realised £1100. Mr GA Hatch of
Launceston seeing a pair of Hereford x heifers to £1055. Mr SE & J Eastley
of Looe saw the top of his British Blue heifers away for breeding at £1000
x 5. The top of Mr RR Sanders & Son saw his bulling Hereford x heifers to
£820.
Friesians
A good trade again today saw Mr Eastley top out at 890 with British
Freisian type from RR Sanders to £810.
Younger Cattle
12 month Limousin x cattle were well in demand with Mr JM Eustice of
Wadebridge selling some showy Limousin x Steers to £900 and a 9 month
single to £890. WC Mably Partnership saw there top end of young
Limousin x Steers to £855 real shapey steers at their best.

Friesians
Younger Friesian sold well today P Reskelly of Padstow seeing his 12
month olds top to £500.
Cows & Calves
A tremendous trade for 2 small dispersals with JB May & Son of
Sweetshouse, Bodmin hitting £1600 twice with red Aberdeen Angus x
South Devon cows and Aberdeen Angus calves at foot; £1550 for South
Devon x Cow Aberdeen Angus Calf and £1350 twice for same way bred.
The Spettigue family of Boscastle saw their top end of Simmental x cows
with Simmental calves top to £1280 with two more at £1250 and £1200.
P Cleave of Red Post saw his top a Hereford x cow with her heifer calf at
foot top to £1300.
Cows/Fats
Finishing cows on offer today with S Carter of Lostwithiel heading at 93
pper kilo and N Doidge of Delabole seeing his best an Aberdeen Angus x
cow to 89 pper kilo.
Vacancy at the Holsworthy Livestock Market
Receptionist
The role: Kivells are looking for a full time Market Receptionist at the busy Holsworthy
Livestock Market. The successful candidate will work on reception together with
undertaking administration for the agricultural department. Likely duties will include
assisting clients both face to face and by telephone, supporting the cattle auctioneer,
preparing catalogues for sale, market reports and advertising.
The candidate: will be bright, cheerful, willing to help and quick to learn. The
successful candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, be organised,
computer literate and be able to work on their own. A background knowledge in
agriculture is an advantage.
This is an interesting and varied role requiring a candidate with a strong work ethic
and the ability to adapt.
Immediate start available.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 8.45am to 5.00pm. Additional hours for some
Saturday sales will also be required.

What a wash out March turned out to be! Heavy, enduring rainfall throughout March combined with
even more snowfall has resulted in the ground now being heavily saturated with a somewhat
lacklustre covering of grass, far from ideal for turning out stock. Fingers crossed spring will finally
‘spring’ upon us this month so that the spring crops can be sown, fertiliser can be spread and stock
can be turned out of the sheds.
The Basic Payment Scheme application window opened in the middle of March and all of the Kivells
Rural Professional team are now busy completing applications for farmers across the West Country,
and will no doubt be keeping busy with the same up until the 15th May deadline. As a team we have
found a lot of re-mapping has occurred as a result of a wide scale remapping exercise undertaken by
the RPA in the second half of 2017, meaning there are some mapping errors in the form of incorrect
field boundaries and fields being incorrectly split or amalgamated. If you have any issues with
mapping that you require help with please do be in touch with your local Kivells Rural Professional
office and we will do all that we can to help.
If you have not yet received your 2017 BPS payment, bridging payments worth up to 75% of the
estimated 2017 claim value were due to be made on 4th April, with the monies expected to arrive in
bank accounts on 6th April. For any claimants in this situation the RPA should have contacted you by
either email or letter at the end of March. If you require any assistance with previous years’
payments please do contact your local office. In some cases we are still trying to rectify mis-
payments to clients for the 2016 and even the 2015 scheme years, to which in a lot of instances the
RPA are only just responding to query forms submitted many months ago.
As of 6th April 2018, some fundamental changes to Permitted Development Rights have come into
force, which will no doubt be of interest to many of you. The first main change is that under
agricultural permitted development rights the maximum size limit for the erection of a new
agricultural building is now 1000m2 on large farms (previously the size limit was 465m2), as ministers
have recognised that larger buildings are often required in order for farmers to be able to adopt the
latest innovations in farming practices. The size limit of 465m2 will remain for small farms, however
the exact definition of what is a small farm and what is a large farm for the purpose of these rights as
yet remains to be seen.
The Class Q Permitted Development Rights (conversion of agricultural buildings to residential
dwellings) have also changed slightly since 6th April. Previously, the conversion of agricultural
buildings to residential dwellings was limited to a maximum of three residential units per agricultural
holding with a maximum of 450m2 floor area. This has now been altered to allow conversion of up to
465m2 of floor space and up to a maximum of five residential units, with the following

3 larger homes with a combined maximum floor space of 465m2
A maximum of 5 smaller homes with each unit being no more than 100m2 in floor area
Or a mixture of large and small homes, (together totalling no more than 5 homes), of which a
maximum of 3 can be large homes
These alterations certainly offer good opportunities for those who are looking to erect new
agricultural buildings and for those with an existing large complex of agricultural buildings that are
ripe for Class Q conversion. Kivells have a wealth of experience dealing with planning applications
and so if you have a project in mind, whether large or small, please do contact us; we would be more
than happy to assist.
The hedgerow and boundary grant is currently open for applications, whereby you can apply for up
to £10,000 as a stand-alone capital grant for works including hedgerow laying, gapping up and dry
stone wall restoration. If any such works are required across the farm this grant is certainly worth
applying for as the money is there and needs to be spent by someone! The deadline for submitting
an application is 30th April, which is now speedily approaching, and if you require any assistance in
