Camps popular amongst students
Mr Burgess and his Sports
Academy crew are keeping the
young people of Shalom Christian
College busy with camps to
Crystal Creek.
In the last fortnight, Mr Burgess
has taken the Year 9/10 boys, the
Year 9/10 girls and the Ollera
Creek, Crystal Creek and Alligator
Creek classes in boy/girl groups.
As well as this, Mr Burgess got
everybody down to Apex Park
last week for swimming,
volleyball, canoeing and fishing! It
was great to see everyone being
so active and healthy!
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
We are well into the term now. We
have started NRL, AFL and
Basketball. Today, we had Matty
Bowen (ex-Cowboys full back)
come in and speak with our
students both Primary and
Secondary and the students really
seemed to enjoy his words and
advice.
The School has a new Board
Chairperson, Mrs Elaine Rae. Mr
Mike Millard has retired from the
role of Chair, but we are grateful
that we still have the wisdom and
knowledge of Mike, who remains
as a member of the Board.
Mrs Judith Geary and Mr Robert
Packer have also retired and we are
also grateful for the contribution
they have made.
We welcome Mr Scott Anderson to
the Board. Scott is from Palm
Island and Southern Queensland.
Kind regards,
Chris England

Confraternity Carnival update
The Shalom Christian College- St
Anthony’s combine team has
continued to improve out of site
in preparations for the
Confraternity Carnival at
Rockhampton during the Term 2
school holidays.
Experienced team members such
as John Tom (Boigu Island, Yr13),
Cody Sturt (Townsville, Yr13) and
Aaron O’Brien (Townsville, Yr13)
are helping mentor and support
younger, less experienced players
such as Jason Mimi (Woorabinda,
Yr11), Jason Taylor (Doomadgee,
Yr11) and Lucas Peters
(Townsville, Yr10).
It was also exciting to see
Shalom-St Anthony’s win against
Ryan Catholic College in the
interschool competition. Well
done to all those working hard for
Confraternity.
Shalom picked in Eagles and Kickstart Teams
AFL has definitely started
already, with the local Townsville
representative side beginning
their training. Congratulations to
Elliot Clarke (Kalumburu, Yr11)
for being selected in the Under 16
Townsville Eagles side, and for his
commitment to training since
November 2015 to present.
The Queensland Indigenous
Kickstart U15 team will also be
drawing players from Shalom,
which will be announced in the
next issue. Well done to the group
of boys who showed their Shalom
talent to Eddie and Kath from
AFL.
Interns at Shalom
A big Shalom welcome to the
newest members of the Shalom
family, Pamai Dau (2015, Boigu
Island), Annie Ingui (2013, Boigu
Island), Cenita Cubillo (2014,
Jabiru), and Talena Morgan (2014,
Milingimbi) who have started
working at Shalom to assist with
activities, both in school and
boarding time, to keep our young
people busy with activities.
We look forward to hearing more
about the awesome activities our
interns will be running with the
boarding and day students.
A new addition to TAIHS
Pamai Dau (2015, Boigu Island)
has recently commenced at
Townsville Aboriginal and
Islander Health Service, in the
footsteps of Talena Morgan
(2014, Milingimbi), James
Matthew (2013, Innisfail), and
Patricka Gisu (2014, Townsville)
in securing a traineeship position
to complete her Certificate III in
Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Primary Health Care.
Congratulations to Pamai!
Cowboys Community Program
The Cowboys Unity Program
enables selected students to join
a traineeship in Certificate 2 in
Sport and Recreation that places
an emphasis on leadership and
work-readiness.
It provides some of our students
with an opportunity to work for
the Cowboys and to gain real-
world work
experience. Participants have
been vigorously preparing to
enter into schools and after
school care centres to organise
and conduct games and activities
for young children.
You may have seen program
participants around school
wearing their newly minted
Cowboys Unity Program polo
shirts!

At the dorms by Paul Tolliday (Head of Boarding)
Looking out my window it’s been
raining all day, a side effect of the
cyclone that did so much damage
to Fiji.
But the 6 weeks we have had of
Term 1 so far have been hot! It is
so good that all of the Boarding
dorms are air conditioned!
It has been hot and we have
looked for opportunities to go for
a swim most weekends either at
Riverway, or at the Strand, or one
of the northern beaches. One
weekend we went to Crystal
Creek. Swimming is fun, healthy
and refreshing.
There has been a little bit of sport
so far for a few individuals who
are training but more will be
involved soon.
Next week the Monday night
social sport (Touch Football and
Soccer) start up again at James
Cook University, AFL and Rugby
will both be increasing as the
season is about to kick off, and
one girls is looking to play
hockey. So our year will get busy
very quickly.
The weekends have been fun with
the usual events on. Church is on
Friday nights in the Library and
last week we went to the cinemas
to watch the movie – Risen –
based on the 40 days after the
resurrection of Jesus. This was
very good. On Saturdays we have
a late breakfast then go shopping
for a couple of hours, before
returning home to have dinner
and go to a paid activity. We
have been to the movies,
LaunchZone (trampolines), ten
pin bowling, roller skating and
Lazer Tag. This week we will
watch the first home game of the
Cowboys NRL season, against the
Sharks. It will be great to see the
World Champions and reigning
Premiers in action again. Let’s
hope that they can go back-to-
back!!!
It’s good spending time with
friends and learning to get along
with each other. Boarding is a
great time of learning and
development for our whole
community.
Confro boys at Columba The Shalom-St Anthony’s Dragons played at Columba
Catholic College over the weekend, with a draw against
Abergowerie, wins against Good Shepard (Mt Isa) and
Gilroy (Ingham) and unfortunately losing against
Columba. Congratulations on 3rd
overall for the carnival.
Getting fit Great to see lots of boys taking advantage of gym
facilities at Shalom and using it to improve their health
and fitness.
AROUND SHALOM
Loving it at Crystal Creek Girls doing the ‘Water bucket challenge’ at Crystal Creek
camp.
Matty Bowen visit Shalom welcomed Matty Bowen, past North
Queensland Cowboys full-back to the school on Friday
5th
March to speak with our students.
Pinnacles Equestrian Centre 9 students had the opportunity to go to Pinnacles to
experience a day working with horses. There was some
great feedback from all students on how much fun they
had.

Keep Supporting Our School
Supporting us can look like:
• Ask your young person did they have a good sleep last night? Why or why not?
• Ask your young person “What is The Shalom Way?”
• Ask your young person “What was one thing you learnt today?”
• Ask your young person “What activities have you done this weekend?”
Shalom would love to hear from families how their young people are doing at Shalom.
Sometimes they might feel shame or embarrassed to talk about these things with us-they might be a new
student and not know staff very well.
Call and have a talk with one of our PC teachers or Health and Wellbeing Team
