Essential oils have grown in popularity. They are often looked at as natural products, yet improper use can be harmful to consumers. Knowing the basics can help you keep patients safe.
Proper dilution is key, as many oils can be dermal irritants when applied directly to skin. Some oils are also photosensitizing, and users need to avoid the sun after application. Others are not deemed safe for pets or children as they can be lung irritants or even toxic if ingested.
Sell a variety of scents and ready-made blends for specific uses, such as relaxation
Merchandise carrier oils so that essential oils can be safely diluted
Diffuse different safe scents in your store to promote interest
Stock some hydrosols as a safer alternative to essential oils for older adults, pets, and children*
Carry a few DIY essential oil books
