Christian Education News

Sunday School – Worship Service Time Change

As you have probably heard by now, our worship service time is changing

to a 10 AM start time year round. The Christian Education Ministry Team has been

working with the Worship and Music Ministry Team to implement this change as

seamlessly as possible. The time change will also affect Sunday School. After

much discussion, and input from the congregation, other ministry teams, and of course Pastor Rachel, we

have decided to change the time that Children’s Sunday School will occur. Children’s Sunday School will now

take place during the worship service, immediately following the children’s sermon,

when the children are dismissed from the service. There will be no Sunday School on

Communion Sundays (first Sunday of each month and holidays). Adult Sunday School

will remain as it has been, prior to the worship service, and will begin at 8:45 AM. Be-

ginning Sunday September 9, these changes will take place.

We hope the new service time and changes to Sunday School will better accommodate

everyone’s schedules and maximize our time here at church. We could use more Sun-

day School teachers- we anticipate having a few different teachers throughout the

year, so that all of us may attend worship on a regular basis. The children’s Sunday School class will be based

on the Kid’s Own Worship curriculum, which is designed for 4 -12 year old children.

Please prayerfully consider donating some of your time this year to teaching Sunday School or serving as a

substitute teacher. We look forward to a great year of spiritual enlightenment and learning for all!

Vacation Bible School (VBS) 2018

Vacation Bible School 2018 was held August 6—10. Our average attendance was 20 children per day with up

to 30 children on the busiest days. Mega Sports Camp – Team Spirit was our theme. At our 9 AM opening

rally, which was led by Cally Miklasz and Holly Bortel (thanks Bill Brodie for the audio visual support) children

sang along to camp DVD’s and learned songs, watched a DVD to learn the daily point and camp theme/mega

verse, then prayed with Pastor Rachel. Then it was off to an hour with their smaller groups which included:

Sports Basics – led by Elyse Perry and Terri Vogler, with assistance provided by Gina Browning and Kathy

Smith, this class was for the pre-K and kindergarten aged children who came to VBS to learn basic

sports skills including throwing, catching, jumping and balancing. These skills are the foundation for

all kinds of sports/games.

Basketball – led by Bill Brodie with assistance from Weston Ferro and Ben Mills, this was the largest group

at Mega Sports Camp. Youth learned the basics of footwork, ball handling, and shooting.

Cheerleading—led by Cally Miklasz, Holly Bortel, and Polly and Heather Ferro. Girls learned basic moves,

chants, cheers, stunts and routines.

Non-sports

Drama – led by Joanne Hollenbeck with assistance from Anna Reagan and Nora Jackson, participants

learned the basics of acting and drama, and presented an actual drama during the final showcase on

Friday.

Cooking – led by Laura Low children learned the basics of food prep, steps in cooking, and cleanup. The

cooking students made pizza bagels for everyone to enjoy after the final showcase on Friday.

After the small group/sports hour, everyone went to Bible Story time which was led by Wendy Zimmer-

man and Joanne Yoviene. Next was snack time – yum! The closing rally ended the day’s events with

songs and a wrap-up of what was learned each day.

On Wednesday, Mission Day at VBS, children made cards for the members of our congregation who don’t

get out; and they made sandwiches for St. Luke’s. Thank you Dudley for talking to the children about

hunger in our community.

On the last day of VBS, parents and caregivers were invited to the Mega Sports Camp showcase which

featured each small group showing off what they learned all week. All in all, VBS was a successful

week – the love of God was shared with young members of our congregation, new children and fami-

lies from the Hamburg community, and by teen/adult volunteers. Children learned the importance of

teamwork and what it means to be on God’s team. Everyone had a blast and no one got hurt –

AMEN!

Horizon Bible Study 2018/2019

God’s Promise: I Am With You The central promise in the Bible is not ‘I will forgive you.’ The most frequent promise is ‘I will be with you.’ This Bible study will be a journey through scripture, from Genesis to the end of the Gospels. We will trace the repetition of God’s most frequent promise. Our focus will be on the actual speaking of the promise. God’s words “I will be with you” {or “I am with you”} wend their way through the scripture. They are

spoken to individuals and communities from the time of the patriarchs to the prophets; from the judges to the kings; before, during and after the exile; into the New Testament and beyond; to the end of the age. This will not be an exhaustive study of any book of the Bible, but the orienta-tion to any particular book will be just to establish the context for the prom-ise. The focus will be on the promise itself and how it speaks to the particular circumstances and how the promise speaks into our circumstances. How does God’s promise of presence change us and the way we live? If we believe the “word of God is living and active” {Heb.4:12}, then we must let it live and act.

The price of the new Study Guide will be $11.

We would like to extend a warm WELCOME!

to all women. Please join our monthly Cir-cle meetings for Bible Study

and Fellowship.
