HAMILTON AGUIAR

Liana Rivas

un·veil·ing noun·an act or instance of presenting, displaying, or revealing, especially for the first time: the unveiling of a new art work.

Hamilton’s work draws references from fragmented images appearing to weave a path that fluctu-ates between representation and abstraction. Each work has an alternative vocabulary and is built through recurrent colours, compositional structure and a layering of gesture, form and surface. The scale of the works is shown through segments of panels with no mechanical order, where each panel gradually can become an independent body of work no longer dependent on the destruction of the figurative painting. The differentiation of the hues in Hamilton’s work and the light/dark shading is achieved by applying the paint in many layers. A subtle luminosity and closure of the sur-face is given by the resin as a form to show the richness of the colors. When one looks at the paint-ings, one can see one’s image unveiling as a mirror to the inner self. It is a reflection of the soul.

As part of the unveiling series Hamilton also works on site-specific installations that are integrated into the architectural space of the gallery. His installations are an exploration into energy, balance and architecture. The work may recall the sculptures of Richard Serra in its form, although the use of polystyrene, resin and paint integrated together embodies a dialogue of unity and minimalism. Hamilton’s sculptural objects manage to seem both fleeting and permanent.

The story of the artist, born in Brazil in 1965, having come to the United States in 1987, and his ad-venture to all corners of Hamptons and their emphatic lights and beaches, are not revealed in his landscapes. Instead, the emphatic truth of Aguiar succeeds in suggesting the universal composi-tion classically balanced. The sky is clear delicately, meticulously trimmed the foliage - or shining in light or resting quietly in the shade - is also marked by shades of nature. In some works, the fore-ground is swanky, warm and rich, the distance disappears with proper grading, while other parts of the first plane are played in warm colors he turns to suit their own purposes, establishing this form, its distinctive individualism. In the vibrant colors of the setting sun, the artist reveals faint reflec-tions in the soil. The exploration of chromatic colors in the background: red, roses, wine, silver and gold - almost frees painting a picture for his ties firmly connected to the ground, bringing the land-scape to a grand spiritual plane of poetic splendor. Aguiar is the dramatic narrative of nature and irrespective of proportion, each painting is a landscape that equals greatness and vastness. Although the expressive works refer to the perceivable world of natural elements, the movement of the shapes is established in accordance angular simplified and abstract, based on a well-struc-tured spatial order.
