Farming Matters • Winter 2012/13 News

“We’ve been seeing red for 64 years” laughs Duncan McAlister of Bute. He is of course not referring to temperament, but rather his family’s outstanding loyalty to Massey Ferguson for almost seven decades.

Duncan is one of seven McAlister children born and bred on the beautiful island of Bute. Five sons are carrying on the farming tradition started by their Great Grandfather, and all run successful agricultural enterprises around Rothesay.

“Our Dad, James acquired the tenancy at Bruchag Farm in 1944 and bought his first Ferguson TE20 tractor from Bute dealership W & J Duncan, but the tractor was actually supplied by Hamilton Brothers on the mainland” explains Duncan. “We were all brought up at Bruchag, so farming became a way of life for us.”

Nearly 70 years on, the McAlister fleet of 17 vintage and ultra modern tractors comprises a 1947 Ferguson TE20 (sadly not the original), a MF 35, MF 65, five MF 135s, an MF 148, MF 165, MF 178, three MF 5455s, two MF 6465s and an MF 6475.

“We’ve all been brought up with MF tractors and abide by our family motto - if it ain’t red, keep it in the shed!” continues Duncan. “We started buying Masseys direct from Hamilton Brothers in 1992 and we get great back-up, great service and we’ve never had a bad one.

The company has kept ahead with technology but the big bonus for us is that the machines are straightforward and easy to drive. You can just jump in and off you go.”

“I think the Dyna-6 gearbox is the best innovation of all. It’s so easy to shift and you hardly ever have to use the clutch. In addition, our MF 6465 is equipped with cab and front suspension which is super and makes for a really comfortable ride on our long farm roads.”

One wonders what Duncan’s Great Grandfather would have made of today’s technology. Here’s to ‘Masseys’ more years of productive farming for the McAlister clan!

To complement the launch of the new 5600 Series 85-105hp 3 cylinder tractors earlier this year, Massey has just announced the imminent arrival of the next three tractors in the range bringing the total to six.

These 110-130hp 4 cylinder tractors complete the 5600 Series which replaces the outgoing 54 and 6400 Series.

These ‘go-anywhere, do-anything’ tractors designed to target the arable, livestock or mixed farmer’s needs are now being hailed as the ‘ultimate loader tractor in the world’.

Built to provide optimum performance in the field and on the road, these state-of-the-art compact tractors bear the Massey seal of style, comfort and quality with

an ultra modern hi-visibility bonnet and cab, precision perfect hydraulics, Dyna 4 transmission in the earlier models and a choice of Dyna 4 or 6 in the latest additions

This year our brand new Massey Ferguson 7618 Dyna 6 demonstrator provided the Tractor Factor on our stand at the Agricultural Shows as we showcased engineering genius to our West of Scotland Farmers.

This superb 6 cylinder 7600 award winning Series now ranging from 140hp to 280hp is the definitive ‘all rounder’ for arable or mixed farmers. The state-of-the-art technology fuses fuel efficient, low emission engines with ergonomically designed roomy cab space reminiscent of the 8600 Series.

Combine this with a lightweight yet strong chassis and a power to weight ratio second to none and you’ll discover this powerhouse will plough and cultivate your land faster than you can devour your ploughman’s lunch!

With so many features and cost saving benefits, best to give us a call to arrange a free, no obligation demonstration of the new 5600, 6600 or the 7600 cream of the crop.

A Hat Trick of Technical Genius from MASSEYSheer DYNA-MITE in the 6600 Series from Massey!Take the power and torque of a 6 cylinder tractor, add the cab size and style of the 7600, mix in superb manoeuvrability from a lightweight, compact design with excellent power to weight ratio and what do you get? The recipe for Massey’s 6600 Series!

With 10 flexible variants to choose from ranging from 120hp minimum to 185hp maximum, Massey has created a monster, neatly packaged for today’s modern farmer.

This 4 cylinder compact and extremely agile tractor is now regarded as the largest and most powerful 4 cylinder tractor in the world, and few would argue. The range has

three base specifications from the ‘Essential’ to the ‘Efficient’ and the range topping ‘Exclusive’ version.

Do you want Dyna-4 or Dyna-6 Semi-Powershift Transmissions with Autodrive? Or have you considered Dyna-VT Continuously Variable Transmission which is available on the MF6614 to MF6616 variants? What about cab comfort? Do you prefer mechanical or Optiride Plus cab suspension and a suspended axle now available across the range?

With so many options to

choose from in the outstanding 6600 Series, all you have to do is decide which options to go for. Either way, you’re guaranteed a tractor that ticks all the right boxes!

Service

It’s 20 years since I was supervised performing my first pre-delivery inspection on a new Massey Ferguson 3075 bound for Arran.

This responsible task was of course part of my four year Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship which I successfully completed at Hamilton Brothers in 1997 prior to honing my Agricultural skills in a diverse range of posts worldwide with Renault, AGCO, Massey Ferguson, Challenger, Valtra and Deutz-Fahr.

I guess my passion for tinkering with tractors was in my blood from an early age. My Grandfather was an Agricultural Contractor in Lanarkshire, and the proud owner of one of the County’s first self propelled Massey combine harvesters. In those days a service constituted applying gargantuan quantities of grease and regularly changing oils and

filters. A cheap insurance to minimise breakdowns and keep the cogs of the local farming industry turning. These days the computerised technology used in the manufacture of agricultural machinery is tantamount to rocket science! What a difference four decades has made.

Today’s demands are even greater. Capital costs for our customers is higher and time for us to turn jobs round is lower. However, when I returned to Hamilton Brothers in May this year as Agricultural Service Manager at our Bishopton Headquarters, I was pleased to

inherit some very talented and professional engineers who each bring their own specialist areas of expertise to our Agricultural Workshop to provide a good balance. All the engineers are manufacturer trained in time saving diagnostic equipment such as laptops and EDT for Massey Ferguson (the latest in touch screen tablet diagnostics).

With help and input from my team I am currently in the throes of instigating a raft of new initiatives to further improve the service facility for our customers. So far we have a new dedicated metal fabrication and welding unit in our workshop with an expanded range of metals and metal work equipment to offer a greater range of fabrication services such as re-flooring or repairing of trailers, buckets or feed wagons.

Future investment includes the latest Air Conditioning Diagnostic and Service Tools and a bigger range of hydraulic hoses and fittings plus PTO shafts and ends.

A fleet of new Volkswagen Crafters will also be replacing our current mobile service vans. This will enable us to carry more parts, be even more prepared for any eventuality, and provide a better ‘first time fix rate’. Great news all round and particularly for our Island farmers where travel costs are a big part of any breakdown.

Our Globetrotting Bishopton Agricultural Service Manager

ServiceCan you afford to live without it? Are you playing Russian roulette with your capital investment leaving the prospect of a breakdown to chance? If so… you might just have had your chips.

Gone are the days of DIY servicing. With such sophisticated technology you could be dicing with death if you’re tempted to go it alone.

Regular maintenance is vital for performance, but it will also ensure your machine retains a greater residual value when you trade it in. We have the expertise and equipment to keep your machinery in tip top condition through servicing, check-ups and necessary repairs. And with our new

in-house Fixed Price Service Package, you’ll never have to worry about budget blitzing bills again!

Many of our customers are also enjoying the benefits of the Massey Manager and JCB Asset Care Servicing and Extended Warranty Plans which also allow you to spread the cost over the lifetime of your machine thus avoiding any nasty surprises.

You can invest in the Manager package if your tractor is up to 12 months old, and cover is offered up to 5 years or 6,000

operating hours. JCB offer similar packages up to 5 years or 10,000 operating hours.

To discuss which of our maintenance packages is best for you, give Ken a call at our Bishopton Depot on 01505 862 010 or email [email protected]

It may have taken more than 110,000 hours of testing and an investment in excess of £80 million, but in our opinion, this year JCB have truly surpassed themselves with the launch of their TM320 and TM320S Telemaster Articulated Loader range.

Manufactured in their Staffordshire based UK Headquarters these models replace the top selling TM310S and give our farmers total peace of mind that it pays to buy British as parts and back up service are second to none.

Powered by their revolutionary Stage IIIB/Tier 4 JCB Ecomax diesel engines, you will benefit from lower noise levels, greatly improved cab comfort, a 100kg of increased lift capacity and revamped drivelines for increased power, productivity and efficiency. But even more impressive in today’s economic climate where every penny counts, you can also expect fuel savings of up to £4,676 over a three year period. A small package that packs a mighty punch!

According to a recent report from NFU Mutual, rural crime in Scotland was up 12% last year despite a 20% fall UK wide. Worryingly, high value tractor and GPS guidance system thefts contributed to this rise so the old adage, prevention is better than cure has never rung truer.

As global leaders in their field, JCB have come up with a solution to combat ‘agri’vating crime by developing a monitoring and management system which really is right out of this world!

JCB LiveLink is a totally unique, advanced telematic system which uses satellite and cellular technology to transmit critical information

about your machine to a secure data centre which you can easily access via the web or your mobile phone. It protects your machine against theft by accurately monitoring machine logistics and unauthorised movement and it also transmits health alerts and service and maintenance requirements to both you and us at Hamilton Brothers!

Even better, the Livelink System comes as standard for the first two years on any JCB Loadall, Wheeled Loader, Fastrac Tractor or the new TM 320 Telescopic Loader. After the initial period it will cost you as little as £1.73 per week to protect your machine and you will further benefit from reduced insurance premiums. A simple solution to crime prevention and machine management that doesn’t cost the earth.

Just Complete Brilliance!

animalhealth

there’s no need for lame excusesprotect your livestock now!

Did you know that after infertility and mastitis, lameness is the third most common reason for culling cows on dairy farms?

When you consider the overall implications of lameness, from the pain and discomfort of the animal to the knock on costs of a reduction in fertility and milk yield plus increased labour and vet costs, you may be surprised to know that for an average 100 cow dairy herd, the direct and indirect costs of lameness could amount to a whopping great £4,000 per year. All

of this could of course be avoided.

So what causes lameness and when is it likely to strike? Winter is the most common time of year for lameness in cattle and sheep as bacteria thrives in persistent wet conditions prevalent in

the West of Scotland. Whilst weather is outwith our control, other key contributory factors such as inadequate housing and management leading to reduced lying times, poor hygiene, diet and ineffective treatment of injuries are very much within our control.

At the recent International Conference on Lameness, studies relating to claw horn lesions found that regular mobility screening resulted in early detection of the disease and that trimming

12

Most farmers will have to deal

with lame livestock at some point.

The cost of lameness could amount to a whopping £4,000 per year.

Page 13: Hamilton Brothers Farming Matters

cattle at mobility scores of 1 and 2 will significantly reduce chronic long term lameness.

Canadian research reported that only 2.8% of dairy farmers were using footbaths correctly and failure to measure footbath capacity and dilution rates was also a contributory factor in lameness control.

Unavoidably, most farmers will have to deal with lame livestock at some point, but if you take preventative measures in the first place, or early treatment at the onset then you won’t suffer punitive penalties all round!

Hamilton Brothers Animal Health team have everything you need to help prevent or treat lameness in your livestock. Our massive range of foot trimming equipment includes hoof knives and metal discs, Tiesen gel and tape, bandages, Nettex foot spray, Provita Combat Spray, footrot shears,

Demotec Blocks, Cowslips and Boveq cow clogs.

Our recommended Footbathing preparations include Provita Hoofsure Endurance, Kilco Superhoof, Formalin and Copper Sulphate. We are also authorised suppliers of the Footvax vaccine which can be used either as a preventative measure or to treat the early stages of lameness.

To cut the cost of caring for your cattle and sheep we have some fantastic seasonal offers on the highly acclaimed PROVITA HOOFSURE ENDURANCE. With a 1% dilution rate it performs

well in soiled footbaths and is manufactured using a unique blend of organic acids and antiseptic tea tree oils. Hoofsure is also the only footbathing product on the market that is non-toxic, biodegradable and stringently tested to be more potent than Formalin or Copper Sulphate which makes it exceptionally cost effective at only 50p per sheep per year.

Our Tarbolton Based Animal Health team of experts are always on hand to offer advice on the best treatments available, but if you can’t hoof it along to the depot, just give George, Angela, Jan or Alistair a call on 01292 541445 or Campbell at Ayr Auction Market on 01292 284424. And remember, now you can also save time and order online 24/7 from our new online shop www.hamiltonbrosdirect.co.uk

The latter has a manual furrow width adjustment from 14-20in, ideal in the furrow behind tractors of up to 190hp. Find out more and call George Harvie at our Tarbolton Depot on 01292 541445. Before you can eat your Ploughman’s lunch you’ll have everything furrowed except your brows!
