WelcomeIf you’re interested in

volunteering & contributing to the overall development

of Coexist, email: [email protected] Christmas fades to a distant memory and the

shortest day of the year has passed thoughts turn to the New Year and with it all sorts of resolutions. With this in mind why not treat yourself to a therapy from Wellbeing on page 2 or take up that course or class you’ve always wanted to do.

James BoswellArtist of the Month James Boswell is an illustrator based in the heart of Bristol. He graduated in 2012 with a “best of year” award from D&AD. Primarily interested in narrative work, and especially characters, he uses a mix of acrylic and watercolour to create his paint-ings. James’ work has appeared in books by the Folio Society (his Illustrations for the drowned world were shortlisted for the Association of Illustrator’s awards in 2013) and in print in both the Guardian and the Telegraph. He works from the col-lective studio Drawn in Bristol and last summer began working on illustration full time.

Sat

2Wormfood Ft. Skutch Manos Manchester's acoustic trio Skutch Manos combine demonic post-Flamenco Spanish guitar, driving double bass, unrelenting drum and percussion beats.

Sun

3Toyface Whimsical singer/songwriter Toyface takes her eloquent confessional poetry, strings it across a seemingly simple musical scaffolding before singing it with loads of pizzazz.

Mon

4Canteen Hip Hop Session Guest MCs and musicians join the rhythm section of the ultra-funky DeCyphers collective for a monthly exploration of all things hip (and, indeed, hop).

Tue

5Ali George & Ruby Brown In Ruby Brown's crystalline vocals seasoned troubadour Ali George found the perfect complement to his own voice and forcefully intricate guitar.

Wed

6Jaz Delorean / Tim Fulker We've got Tankus the Henge's guitarist and front man round to play! Come and enjoy Tim's very fancy acoustic finger work and Jaz's charming cabaret sleaze.

Thu

7People’s Front Room Band You've probably stumbled across this lot in a festy field, drawn in by their psychedelic trash décor and pretty tasty and (pretty random) musical treats.

Fri

8Baraka Baraka make vibrant pan-African music with a Caribbean undertow, plenty of rhythm and a rich instrumental sound that takes you from Kingston to Kinshasa and back again.

Sat

9Rum Buffalo Ragtime banjo and rootin'-tootin' harmonica meets Billie Beckley's sleazy vocals making something fresh, albeit steeped in vaudevillian sepia and smoked with moonshine rye.

Sun

10The Seatsplitters Another branch of the Poor Old Dogs family, this duo will infuse their usual repertoire of lively stompin' folk with more traditional tunes.

Mon

11Canteen Jazz Session An open jazz jam session led by saxophone hero Craig Crofton supporting seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & Latin tunes.

Fri

15Dila V & The Oddbeats Bosporus-straddling blend of Turkish folk and irresistible Balkan

dance beats comes with hints of Greek Rebetiko amongst other tasty world music flavours.

20Daan Temmink Quartet While tightly structured contemporary slow-burners figure in the quartet's repertoire you can expect a fair amount of hard-bopping upbeat modern jazz too.

Thu

21James Paton Band Well-established Bristol drummer James Paton has outed himself as a singer/songwriter with soulful, R'n'B and hip-hop inspired original songs.

Fri

22Mr T & The Minions Fronted by livewire songstress Elle Ashwell and the sizzling fiddle of Lucy Razz there's something irresistible about their party-centred Balkan-inspired Gypska.

Sat

Mon

25Canteen Jazz Session An open jazz jam session led by saxophone hero Craig Crofton supporting seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Thu

28Cousin Kula Psychedelic Indie gets the folk rock treatment with lashings of shiny Jazz ambience. This is all lovely stuff, epic pop with intelligence behind it and catchy to boot.
