By Motlalepula Ntshana The A Re Yeng Project commenced a while ago with various construction activities on Paul Kruger Street with the focused attention between Boom and Madiba Streets. Till today, the City has been able to keep a single lane open for mixed traffic to pass through the area.Regrettably, the single lane that was open has proven to be unsafe for both motorists as well as the site staff, therefore, the contractor had to review the traffic accommodation plan through this area. A decision has been taken by Tshwane Metro Police to revert to the original plan for the construction works on Paul Kruger Street by closing the section between Boom and Madiba Streets for traffic from Monday, 23 June 2014. This closure to traffic will be extended to Nana Sita Street in the near future.Access will be provided to business owners, employees, delivery vehicles and visitors. All the business owners and employees in the area have been provided with A Re Yeng stickers that will allow them to gain access into the area. Please note that all parking lots within the road reserve have been removed. The intersections crossing Paul Kruger Street within this area will remain open for traffic. Motorists are urged to use the following detours to avoid the various construction activities when accessing and exiting the Pretoria Central Business District (CBD).CBD from North to South motorists can turn left into Boom Street and then left into Thabo Sehume Street to enter the CBD. From Thabo Sehume Street, motorists can either use Bloed or Johannes Ramokhoase Streets to gain access onto the affected sections of Paul Kruger Street.CBD from South to North motorists can turn right into Francis Baard Street and then use Bosman Street towards Boom Street and then use Boom Street to exit the CBD. From Bosman Street motorist can either use Struben Street or Madiba Street to gain access onto the affected sections of Paul Kruger Street. Motorists are urged to take note of detours and to adhere to the traffic signage and speed limits through the construction sites. The sidewalks will remain open to pedestrians at all times and who in turn are urged to be vigilant when passing the construction areas. Pedestrians are cautioned against entering the construction /sites. “We sincerely apologise for any disruptions resulting from the closure, but we are working hard to provide a better Tshwane Service to all residents” said the city official. The City of Tshwane would like to thank everyone for their anticipated co-operation and patience during the construction period.

A resident from Eersterus, near Hammanskraal area struck it triple lucky when he got three cattle for the prize of one. This happened in January this year after he had entered a competition that was run by Dunlop. The competition was meant to run for a period of four months when any motorist could purchase merchandise ranging from tyres to motor parts to rims. S.M. Makopiane’ lady luck smiled on him when he won a cow that gave

birth to twins.Makopiane told Hammanskraal News that he did not expect to win anything though he entered for the competition. He admitted that luck strikes when it is less expected. All the same, the lucky man is the happiest of all and it became a most jubilant moment for the whole family. He relayed that he was not aware that the cow was pregnant. He further said that he kept it for three months after which it gave birth to two heifers. The winner said that he also has other cattle elsewhere and was over the moon with the twin

heifers. He explained that it is very rare for cows to give birth to twins. Mrs. Lorette Booysen, a veterinarian surgeon in Settlers confirmed that twins are very rare in cattle. She explained that it comes as an hereditary issue. She further said that if the twins were a bull and a heifer, the heifer is likely to be sterile and it is called a free martin. The vet stated that it remains to be seen on the growth of the twins if their fertility could be affected. She concluded that the winner should consult with any animal clinic after two years to ascertain their fertility status.

Some members of the community and concerned residents of Masakhane have to come to terms with cleanliness of their area. The said persons told Hammanskraal News that they have voiced their concern in the community meetings that are regularly held in the area. They emphasized that this “don’t care attitude” of some community members need to be cautioned.Collen Pheto (pseudonym) told Hammanskraal News that littering has become a habit and that people tend to look down at the refuse removal efforts of the municipality. He added that when things are not done their way, they would take to the streets and march . He stated that some take wheelbarrows just to go and dump refuse (tins, bottles, plastic material etc.) under the constructed water tunnel near the western entrance into the Township. He stated that the community is worried about the littering into the tunnel. He added that the tunnel may likely be a hide out for thieves and wicked people and children are not safe even during the day.On the other hand Pheto said that primary school children play in the tunnel and on numerous occasions he had to call them to order. He added that some are very naughty inside the tunnel and referred to sexual activities that these children get into. He explained that they enter the tunnel

from school and leave it in the evening to go home. This concerned parent said that they are worried that the place might be used as a hide out for criminals and that it would endanger the citizens..Pheto further said that criminal activities are not something to be hidden and that it needs to be stamped out. He added that there had been numerous attacks on residents who arrive late from work, especially on Fridays. He stated that a number of women have been threatened with rape when they got off from taxis from work places.Jacobeth Rantsi told Hammanmskraal News that she was twice attacked and was saved from possible rape when two men appeared from a nearby farm. She said that she was on her way from work and got a late taxi from BelaBela. She explained that they arrived at Masakhane after eight and it was dark. She further said that the perpetrators came from behind her and as she was tripped to the ground, she screamed and two men came to her rescue. She relayed that the good samaritans escorted her to her place of residents. She concluded that the tunnel is good for direction of water but the residents need to work on community policing for their safety.

PLATINUM MINE STRIKES OVER!

NEWS / DITABA Page 727 June - 11 July 2014

The Marikana crisis, which has almost pushed our economy into a recession, has been a complex one. Politicians, advocates, trade unions, mining bosses and the police have all been involved, but it is the miners who were at the centre of the controversy.Tame TIMES recently interviewed young Marikana rock-driller Mr Majola. (* real name withheld). Born and bred in the Eastern Cape, Majola has been working at Marikana for 3 years and has been out on strike for 4 months. The job of rock-driller involves hard physical labour for 8 hours a day, preparing the rock-face, making supports, preparing for blasting, clearing 150 holes a day and so on. Conditions are very hot, claustrophobic and dark – without a light you cannot see your hand in front of your face. Then there are the dangers of methane gas, rockfalls and underground fires. Every time Majola goes underground, he knows he “may not see daylight at the end of the shift.” He is always exhausted because he

often works on his rest-day to earn an extra R290.When asked for his opinion on the AMCU boss’s reported multiple cars and houses, Majola dismissed this, saying that Mathunjwa “works for his cars and houses” and added that he himself had two homes and two wives in the Eastern Cape. On the subject of promotion, Majola said there should be automatic promotion for miners after five years on the job. Currently, he said, only two to three percent of miners were promoted and there seemed to be no easily identifiable reasons for their selection. Mine bosses in his opinion “earn too much. They say they earn more because they are educated and we are not educated; but we are the hard workers.”When asked how the strike could be settled, his answer was: “R12 500 without deductions.” He was clearly distressed that the families of the 2012 Marikana

Massacre victims had still not been paid compensation and believes that the police shot to kill them, but that they “got instruction to fire.”Clearly, South Africans need to be very thankful that the Marikana crisis is over, for now.

Rustenburg in particular and South Africa in general heaved a huge sigh of relief late on Monday after AMCU announced an end to a strike in the Platinum belt that had dragged on since January 23.

The trade union announced to its followers that it accepted offers from the mining companies –

bringing an end to the strike after just over five months.

“We are signing the agreement tomorrow. That means the strike has come to an end officially," AMCU leader Joseph Mathunjwa said at a mass rally held at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex.Mining workers are expected to return back to

work today. Mathunjwa presented to loud applause a revised wage deal to platinum miners at the rally.Thousands of miners were given a programme that included “back to work arrangements.”

Mathunjwa read out the details of the deal for different salary bands at Lonmin [JSE:LON], Impala Platinum [JSE:IMP] and Anglo Platinum [JSE:AMS], which included a R1 000 per month salary increase for lower earners.

The deal would be back-dated to last July at Implats and Amplats but the back pay would end on January 22, when the strike started. This means miners will not be paid for the months they were on strike.

At Lonmin the deal would be back-dated to last October until January 22."In 2012, we asked for R12 500 and people died... and left us with a challenge [to keep fighting]," he said.

Before reading out the deal, Mathunjwa asked all miners in the stadium to stand and have a moment of silence for "fallen comrades".He said the strike was one of the most peaceful strikes in South Africa.

The strike has already had a negative impact on the country’s economy and investor confidence. Additionally, it has been mentioned by ratings agency Standard & Poor's as one of the reasons South Africa’s credit rating was downgraded.

Why did the strike last so long?A miner’s point of view
