MY FAVORITE YEAR

In 1983, writer Lynn Ahrens and composer Stephen Flaherty met at a BMI musical theatre workshop in New York and combined to form a successful professional music team. They scored their first off-Broadway success in 1988 with Lucky Stiff, a musicalisation of The Man Who Broke the Bank of Monte Carlo. This musical farce won a Richard Rodgers Production Award and the Helen Hayes Award for Best Musical. In 1990 they triumphed again with Once On This Island that received a Tony nomination for Best Musical and ran for 487 performances on Broadway. The English West End production saw them collect the Olivier Award for Best Musical of 1995. It was revived again on Broadway in 2017 and won the Tony Award in 2018 for Best Revival of a Musical. They then embarked on the musicalisation of the 1982 Peter O’Toole movie, My Favorite Year, a lively American story with larger than life, funny characters, set in 1954 when show tunes were still the most popular songs around. Teaming with Joseph Dougherty, who had won an Emmy Award for TV’s Thirtysomething and Broadway’s director of Driving Miss Daisy, Ron Lagomarsino, they were well on their way to adapting My Favorite Year into a musical. My Favorite Year opened at New York’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre in December 1992 to mixed reviews during its limited season run. Featuring Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Show) and Evan Pappas, it produced Tony nominations for Tim Curry, Lainie Kazan and Andrea Martin, with Martin winning the Best Supporting Actress Tony for her hilarious portrayal of Alice Miller, a comedy writer for the King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade. Andrea Martin has since been nominated five times for the Best Supporting Actress Tony and won again for her efforts in 2013 for Pippin. My Favorite Year tells the story of Benjy Stone, a comedy writer who looks back fondly at 1954, when he was getting started in the business, fell in love for the first time, and had the opportunity to meet his childhood idol, the movie star Alan Swann. Though the overriding tone is a comical one, the score deals very poignantly with the issues of parental abandonment, and with our societal notions of what heroism is all about. Although only running for 37 performances on Broadway in its original run it has now become an extremely popular show with production companies, drama groups and schools throughout the world. Successful staged concerts of the show have been held in New York in 2003 and again in 2014. In 2007 the song writing team decided to rework the show and it appeared in a Chicago production with two new songs. Ahrens and Flaherty have continued their career with many other successful shows. These include Ragtime, Seussical the Musical, Rocky the Musical and Anastasia. They received two Academy Awards nominations for Best Original Song and Best Original Score for the animated movie, Anastasia. This show also yielded the pop hit ‘At The Beginning ’as recorded by Donna Lewis and Richard Marx. We hope that you enjoy tonight’s performance of My Favorite Year as we take you back when television was often recorded live to air…………….
