Procedures; and personal papers.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Robert N. Denham was born on October 23, 1885 in St. Louis to Robert Newton
and Sarah Compton Denham. He was educated in Missouri and Michigan, admitted to
the bar in those states and Texas. During World War I, he served as a second lieutenant
in the Air Corps. Married three times, he had four children. He served as attorney for
banking, brokerage, and corporate interests in New York and Florida and on the Pacific
Coast. As trial examiner (1928-1947) and general counsel (1947-1950) for the National
Labor Relations Board, his conservative views had considerable influence on labor-
management relations and interpretations of the Taft-Hartley Act. Fired by President
Truman in 1950, he resumed his private practice, was a lobbyist for the Continental
Baking Company, and served as advisor to the President’s Conference on Administrative
Procedure. He lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland, until his death in St. Louis on June 18,
1954.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Denham Papers have been arranged into six series: Private Practice,
National Labor Relations Board, Legislation, Speeches, Post General Counsel
Years, and Personal Papers.
The strengths of this collection are the insights into the history of labor-
management relations, the inner workings of large corporations and banking interests,
business cycles and ethics, and commercial and labor law of the 1920s through the 1940s.
Florida land development and reclamation in the 1930s is another highlight. There is
little in the way of personal information. Denham’s papers as trial examiner and general
counsel for the National Labor Relations Board comprise over eighty percent of the
collection.
More complete series descriptions can be found in the folder list.
