Inaugural Billy Cart Grand Prix

As part of their science investigations, Year 2 students have been developing an understanding of the variety of factors that affect the way objects move.

To fully understand the forces that interplay, each class constructed a billy cart which they raced in front of family and friends at the inaugural Billy Cart Grand Prix this month.

Learning science at Bialik is hands-on, combining everyday objects and experiences with a variety of scientific methods of enquiry. Being a junior scientist encourages our students to develop specialist skills, to make their own discoveries through observation, investigation and experimentation as well as have a great deal of fun!

Year 7 students embark on a meaningful B’nei Mitzvah journey each year, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of their family’s history and their Jewish heritage.

This year’s Bnei Mitzvah program theme was ‘Da m’ayin b’ata ule’an atah holech’ – ’Know from where you come and where you are going’ (Pirkei Avot)’.

The Roots Projects, family interviews, visits to the Jewish Museum and other experiences, though often confronting, allowed students to truly explore the often difficult conditions our ancestors faced, the tragedies and the triumphs and after a year of exploring,

the cohort celebrate their rite of passage in a joyous ceremony that includes everybody.

The B’nei ceremonies, comprising personal stories, song and dance, are a highlight of the year and allow students to exhibit and share their Roots Projects and their Creative Responses with their families. In line with the College’s pluralist ethos, students are gifted with a siddur of their choosing, reflecting their individual Jewish identity and practice.

Past students often comment that the memories created through the Bnei Mitzvah experience is one they will always cherish.

Educational ExcellenceShalom KehillaShalom Kehlilla,

As we prepare for Rosh Hashanah during the reflective month of Elul, what better metaphor is there than the inaugural Billy Cart Grand Prix that Year 2 undertook this year!

In preparing for our Rosh Hashanah meals, as the Year 2s have prepared their billy carts, similar skills have been involved. Planning, teamwork, science (either in cooking or in the study of forces), fine motor skills, presentation and art have all been at the fore, and in the final race, a little bit of luck does no harm!

This term has ended on a crescendo with Bialik Rising Star, the three Bnei Mitzvah ceremonies, the Bialik Arts Festival, the visit of our friends from the Arava and, sadly at the end of the term, farewelling our Zio Mads from Israel.

We were delighted to host the 6th Cultures of Thinking Conference, at which 400 educators travelled from across the globe to experience, and learn from, a little of the Bialik magic that makes learning and growth so impactful in our community.

As we head into a well-earned break, I wish all of our community health and happiness, whether you are travelling, hosting, resting, introspecting, or hurtling down a hill with our Year 2s in their billy carts!

Success At ‘The Voices’ National Public Speaking CompetitionBialik College senior school students elected to once again participate in Mikolot ‘The Voices’ national public speaking competition between Jewish schools. The competition aims to promote greater collaboration among Jewish schools, cultivate public speaking skills and foster a wide range of expression of Jewish voices.

Senior school students Thomas Friedman and Lee Oz Lifschitz competed in the Victorian semi-finals with Lee Oz proceeding to the national competition.

Greg Sher Award WinnersMazel Tov to Cara Davies and Tania Szwarcberg who were each awarded the Private Greg Sher Memorial Award at the VAJEX ANZAC Commemoration Service held in late April.

The Greg Sher Memorial Award is presented in memory of Private Sher, who was tragically killed whilst on active service in Afghanistan in 2009. It is awarded to Year 11 students who have provided outstanding voluntary service to the community and their fellow students.

Ian Poyser, Head of Middle School, Assistant Principal – Pastoral Care, said, “Both Cara and Tania are exceptional young women who actively seek out responsibility and show tremendous leadership.”

Songs From The Big Screen The sixth annual singing competition, Bialik Rising Star was held at the Glen Eira Town Hall in August with the theme ‘Songs from the Big Screen’. The audience of 500 people enjoyed the show which integrated talent across year levels and various arts disciplines. The camaraderie and team spirit the entire cast demonstrated whilst still competing for the ‘big prize’ was inspiring.

The College was fortunate to have a panel of celebrated guest judges including acclaimed artists Natalie Gamsu, Jake Fehily OC’14 and Katie Weston.

Mazel tov to all the performers and to the winners on their outstanding performances.

Bialik Student Wins Trip To Israel For My Family Story ProjectFor the seventh consecutive year, a Bialik College student, Tye Samuels (Year 8), has won a trip to Israel in the annual My Family Story competition held by Beit Hatsufot – ‘The Museum of the Jewish People’. Tye visited Israel in July where he attended a two-day celebratory event, which included tours, gatherings and an award ceremony.

Tye’s submission was a ‘customised Samuels/Birnbaum family version of Monopoly’ where “places on the board

are countries and cities where my ancestors lived. ‘Jail’ is Shomberg Concentration Camp, and the ‘money’ represents the different currencies my ancestors used.”

Over 20,000 students from 155 worldwide institutions participated in this year’s project, with the final selection leading to only 48 winners. Bialik’s Year 7 students create My Family Story projects during their B’nei mitzvah journey.

National Constitutional ConventionYear 11 students Genevieve Kleytman and Lucy Korman were given an amazing opportunity to participate in a three-day National School Convention in Canberra to discuss ‘Indigenous Recognition in the Constitution’.

They heard from inspiring speakers, visited the old and new parliament houses, had dinner at the high court, attended an event at the Governor General’s house and were involved in discussions with other students from across Australia on this interesting topic.

The insightful and thought-provoking experience enabled them to explore the issues in the constitution and vote for change in a mock referendum.

Search For The Next Tech Girl Superhero!Mazel tov to the outstanding group of Year 4/5 Tech girls who were chosen as one of only 3 teams in Victoria out of 260 teams nationally to make it to the finals of the Next Tech Girl Superhero competition.

The girls developed an app for Years 3-10 called Charity Chipmunk which “gives children a chance to give back to the community through their schools” and volunteer

in their area of interest. The girls developed a business plan explaining everything from finances to potential market size, consumer research and competitor analysis.

The app is safe as it requires parents to sign in and fun for children who can elect to cook for a neighbour, walk their dog or even volunteer to do their dishes. Julie Hart, Celine Razbash, Michelle Brover, Rebecca Paratz, Jennifer Broide, Ella Wilson

Tikkun Olam is central to Bialik’s vision of Communal Responsibility. Raising funds for important causes, as well as donating time and resources, are just some of the ways in which we assist in ‘repairing the world’. So far, our students have raised over $25,000 for external charities in 2017.

Celebrate, Commemorate and ConnectTikkun Olam

Fundraising AwardedBialik was recently awarded a plaque from the Leukaemia Foundation for being one of Victoria’s highest contributors in this year’s Shave for a Cure, raising close to $15,000.

Monies raised will help fund essential life-saving research and provide free, emotional and practical support for sufferers of leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma and their families.

Mitchel Makes A DifferenceEarlier this year, Year 8 student Mitchel Weller celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and in lieu of gifts, he asked that donations be made to ‘Making A Difference’, a B’nei B’rith project which provides bursaries to disadvantaged Jewish VCE students. This was the first time the organisation received a donation in lieu of gifts from a bar mitzvah boy. Mazel tov and kol ha’kavod Mitch.

Am Yisrael Chai!Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s 69th birthday, was celebrated at Bialik with bucket-loads of ruach, dancing, laughter and songs. Students made shakshuka, enjoyed Israeli films, ate delicious Israeli food, picked up some great trivia about the Land of Milk and Honey, and even had Krav Maga lessons.

Pink Ribbon BreakfastKol Ha’kavod to the Tikkun Olam Mazkirut Tzevet who organised Bialik’s first ever ‘Pink Ribbon Breakfast’. They raised over $2500 with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Special guest speakers Renee Gani, Lindy Lifszyc and singer Sharon Davis helped ensure the event was informative, meaningful and joyful.

Cooking For The NeedyProviding Shabbat meals is a huge mitzvah, one that is carried out with joy in the Bialik Community Kitchen program by Year 8 & 9 Etgar students who prepare Shabbat meals for those in need every Friday afternoon.

Shavuot At BialikThere was a real spirit of inquisitive learning during Shavuot. Many interesting lessons and group discussions were held with students in various year levels and everyone at the school (including the staff) enjoyed delicious dairy desserts.

ELC students came dressed in white and brought baskets of fruit to celebrate the custom of bringing first fruits to the Temple in Jerusalem, The fruit was donated to C Care who only just managed to squeeze the generous baskets

into their truck!

Some of the Years 9-12 students also took part in Tikkun Leil (night-time Jewish learning and discussion sessions), and ‘shul hopping’ to experience a variety of speakers and sessions on a myriad of topics.

Volunteer ExtraordinaireMazel tov to Bialik teacher Gary Brand who was recognised at a ceremony for National Volunteer Week at the Glen Eira Town Hall for his contribution to the community.

Gary has been a volunteer Scout leader at the 10th Caulfield Scout Group for over 30 years and, in this position, has mentored hundreds of Jewish children, including our very own Assistant Principal and Head of Jewish Life, Dan Sztrajt!

The theme of the 2017 annual Bialik Arts Festival was ‘Connections’ and gave the students the opportunity to explore the meaning of connections to their history, to each other, their emotions and to stories through a number of fun and creative activities.

Students connected with Alumni artists Joshua Batten OC’13, Josh Blashki OC’13, Sam Korman OC’15, Lexi Kowal OC’14 and Leesa Snider OC’12 who joined current students on stage to launch the 2017 Arts Festival.

Some highlights of the week included the Year 9 Media Exhibition, the creation of the Crochet Project installation where students knitted and crocheted items that were then connected, as well as a

performance by Comedian Josh Glanc OC’03 for our senior students. Other activities included Hip Hop Dancing, African Drumming, Film Festivals, Drama Incursions and much more.

It was great to see so many students experiencing the creativity of the Arts in a variety of ways.

Hosting Arava StudentsBialik College was the base for a delegation of 12 Israeli high school students visiting from the Arava who were hosted in the homes of our students and their families.

Whilst in Australia, the Arava students explored Melbourne’s Jewish lifestyle and participated in a number of exciting events and activities. This included an Interschool Peula which took place at Bialik and was attended by students from the other Melbourne Jewish schools.

The visiting students, who

came from varying and diverse Jewish backgrounds, explored what it meant to be Jewish and how different people express their religious beliefs. They also investigated what a typical day in the life of an Australian student looks like compared to a student from the Arava.

We look forward to our ongoing relationship with our friends from the Arava, which continues in just a few months’ time when our Year 10 cohort visit them in Israel during Chavayah.
