Apply a small amount (about 3ml) of the product in a cupped hand, covering all surfaces Rub hands palm to palm Rub back of each hand with the palm of other hand with fingers interlaced Rub each thumb clasped in opposite hand using rotational movement Rub tips of fingers in opposite palm in a circular motion Rub each wrist with opposite hand Your hands are now safe Rinse hands with water Dry thoroughly with a single-use towel Use elbow to turn off tap Once dry, your hands are safe Wet hands with water cover all hand surfaces Apply enough soap to 1a 1b 2 3 Rub palm to palm with fingers interlaced 4 Rub with backs of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked 5 6 7 8 9 12 9 9 11 10 20-30 sec 40-60 sec Adapted from WHO World Alliance for Patient Safety 2006 HAND CLEANING TECHNIQUES 1a 1b Hands must be cleaned before and after every patient contact
