achieve our Strategic
Priorities by 2012.
We also believe that
our sport has much to
offer by encouraging
participation in diverse,
multi-cultural communities
where handball has
traditionally been a
popular sport, and in the
Higher Education sector
where the capacity to
develop competitive sport
is high.”
BRITISH HANDBALL CALLS FOR
FULL TEAM AT 2012 OLYMPICS
After doubt was cast on
the number of athletes the
BOA could support
because of their budget
shortfall, British Handball’s
board has moved to clarify
their position with the
following statement from
Chairman John Brewer:
“The British Handball
Association, (BHA), firmly
believes that the British
Olympic Association,
(BOA), should send a full
team of athletes to the
London 2012 Olympic
Games, and that the BOA
must receive the
necessary funding to
achieve this goal.
“We believe that this is
the only way of maximizing
the unique opportunities
that the London 2012
Olympic Games present,
enabling Team GB to
achieve the highest
possible standards of
performance, whilst
creating a legacy of
increased participation in
a range of sports, when
the 2012 Games are over.
“The BHA is fully
committed to two Strategic
Priorities in the build up to
the London 2012 Olympic
Games, namely:
* Entering two
competitive teams into the
Men’s and Women’s
Handball competitions at
the London 2012 Olympic
Games.
* Creating a structure
that develops the sport at
community level, and
produces a talent
development system which
sustains future competitive
British handball teams.
The current rate of
progress is rapid, as
reflected by the recent
performances of both
squads, and we are
confident that our on-going
strategies and future plans
will enable us to continue
this rate of progress, and

East Kilbride Give Scottish
League Leaders a ScareSCOTTISH League
leaders Gracemount were
given a scare by a strong
East Kilbride team in the
latest fixtures north of the
border, but in the end
experience told and
Gracemount ran out 37-25
winners.
Now unbeaten in all
three of their opening
matches, Gracemount
needed to call on all of
their strength in depth and
the experience brought in
by new players to secure
the victory, while for East
Kilbride it can only be a
matter of time before they
notch up their first win.
The second match of
the day was also a
cracker, with Ayr giving a
real fright to Cumbernauld
before eventually losing
out narrowly 32-35.
Ayr led 27-24 late in the
second half, but they ran
out of steam and a
younger Cumbernauld
side managed to
overcome the deficit with
several breaks which
punished Ayr’s mistakes
as they tired.
After two narrow
results, finally there was
an upset in the final match
of the day with Liberton
scoring a 32-29 win over
Tryst.
With several new
players in their ranks this
season, Liberton have
finally started to gel
together well into a strong
team.

A BATTLING
performance from the
University of Nottingham
saw them beat Liverpool
Speke Garston 21-25 on
Sunday – and go joint top
of the English National
League’s Northern
Section.
The victory was
Nottingham’s fourth in
five games, and leaves
them level on eight points
with Manchester, who had
a blank weekend.
Speke fought well and
showed the sort of form
that helped them beat
leaders Manchester earlier
in the season, but after
leading 8-6, Speke fell
behind 12-10 at half time.
Nottingham lost line
player Ali Karakiprik with
an injury late in the first
half, and as play resumed

Speke Garston hit back to
lead once again.
But Nottingham battled
back again to lead, and
with a strong defensive
performance throughout
they secured the win.
Cedric Biguenet top-
scored with seven, while
Hubert Marcinowski and
Alberto Camara both also
played well and scored
five times.

35-25 in their latest
Northern Section clash on
Sunday.
After their defeat to
Northern champions
Manchester on the opening
day of the season, Salford
have gone from strength to
strength, with the
experience and depth of
their squad helping them to
two victories.
Manchester University
recorded their first win of
the season, beating fellow
strugglers Wirral 24-23.
With both teams
previously without a win,
the University side just
edged the match, and
although they join Speke
on two points they are still
second bottom of the table
on points difference.
