HANDBALL RULES FOR BEGINNERS A SERVICE OF THE INTERNATIONAL HANDBALL FEDERATION HANDBALL RULES FOR BEGINNERS INTERNATIONAL HANDBALL FEDERATION YELLOW CARD Warning Only one per player, a maximum of three per team. WHAT DO THE REFEREE HAND SIGNALS MEAN? RED CARD Disqualification The player is suspended for the rest of the match, the team continues in numerical inferiority for 2 min. Goal A legal goal has been scored. Foul committed by the attacker Results in losing possession of the ball. Too many steps The player is permitted to take a maximum of 3 steps with the ball in his hands. Forewarning signal The attacking team executes passive play – they risk to lose possession of the ball. Suspension For 2 minutes, the team has to continue in numerical inferiority.

play including many goal-scoring

scenes, fascinating tackling,

acrobatic shots, brilliant tricks

and spectacular goalkeeper saves.

Enjoy the handball matches!

THE ATTACKER IN POSSESSION OF THE BALL...� ... is entitled to bounce the ball as often as he likes to do so. If he catches the ball

he is allowed to take a maximum of three steps with it. Then he has to pass or toshoot.

� ... has to jump at the goal-area line (6m line), is allowed to fly above the goal areabut must not enter it with the ball in his hands.

BASIC RULESHANDBALL MEANS. . .... 2 teams with 6 court players and 1goalkeeper each compete.

... player substitutions can be effectedat any time.

... the court players must not enter thegoal area (6m in front of the goal).

... the goalkeeper is entitled to act asa court player.

... the playing time is two halves of 30minutes with a 10 min-breakinbetween.

... two referees lead the match.

THE DEFENDER . . .� ... is allowed to have body contact in a

man-on-man situation� ... must not hit� ... must not hold or restrain,� ... must not strike or pull back the opponent’s

throwing arm� ... must not spoil a clear chance of scoring

with illegal means. This always leads to aseven-metre throw!
