Originally founded in 1946 as the Taiwan Provincial Teachers College, the school's mission was to train outstanding secondary education teachers. The name was changed to National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) in 1967, but the commitment to quality education and teacher training remained. With the enactment of the Teacher Preparation Law in 1994, NTNU transformed itself, creating many new academic departments, and expanding its mission to train professionals for a variety of careers. The university also worked to foster an international environment conductive to the free exchange of ideas, and to welcoming international students to enroll in academic programs. NTNU has established ties with well-known institutions in over 23 countries, spanning the five continents: Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Australia.

NTNU is a diverse, multinational institution and community, with an international student population of close to 2,000 students. NTNU has three campuses: the Main campus, the Kung-kuan campus and the Lin-kou campus, and ten distinct colleges: the College of Education, the College of Fine Arts, the College of International Studies and Education for Overseas Chinese, the College of Technology, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Music, the College of Management, the College of Science, the College of Sports and Recreation, and the College of Social Sciences. Currently, around 73 programs offered by 44 departments or graduate institutes are open to international students. NTNU is also host to 16 research divisions and Education Centers.

Established in 1956, the Mandarin Training Center not only boasts a long history, but is also the largest and most well-known language center in Taiwan for students who wish to study Mandarin. The Mandarin Training Center offers language courses at all levels, cultural courses and many extracurricular activities in order to meet the needs of students who come from more than 60 different nations across the globe.

The Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, established in 1995, is one of the independent graduate institutes in NTNU's College of International Studies and Education for Overseas Chinese. In addition to researching on Chinese linguistics and Chinese language pedagogy with special emphasis on teaching Chinese as a foreign language, our institute also stresses the development and impact of overseas Chinese cultural exchange. As a concrete step in this direction, in 2006, our institute applied for partnership with the newly increased Overseas Chinese Education and Studies research group. As a result, the first class of Master's students was recruited in 2007 in order to strengthen the development of academics in both the areas of Overseas Chinese Education and of Overseas Chinese Studies. Our goal is to not only use these specialized academic studies to channel knowledge into the Chinese language curriculums of schools for overseas Chinese as well as into their operations and management, but to promote cultural and educational cooperation on an international level.

Each year 22 local students and 15 foreign students are accepted into the program. On average, the length of the program is limited to 4 years in total, including 2 years to complete the 36 required credit hours of classwork. Mandarin Training Center

Established in 1956, the Mandarin Training Center (MTC) engages in Chinese language teaching, research, and teacher training. Currently, approximately 1600 students from over 60 countries are enrolled each quarter, forming the largest Chinese language learning center in Taiwan. Though our students come from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, they all share the common goal of learning to use Mandarin Chinese for effective communication.

Teaching Materials and MethodsThe teaching at MTC focuses on 4 basic language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. In their role as language guide, our teachers encourage students to actively participate in various language learning activities. Our teachers adapt their teaching methods based upon both course contents and student backgrounds. Additionally, they have the flexibility to make use of the various teaching techniques, such as the direct method, the communication-based method, the situational method, the translation method and the audio-visual method. The language materials employed are as extensive as they are flexible, including both materials specially made for non-native language learners, as well as authentic reading materials aimed at native speakers. Basically as long as the materials match a student's interest and language ability, just about any thing is acceptable. Audio-visual materials such as television news, movies, etc. are also available. Language materials are ranked according to their levels of difficulty from beginner, intermediate, advanced to selected readings of Chinese literature. Various course levels offered allow students to find the level most suitable for them.

Language courses: MTC operates on a quarterly system. An academic year comprises four quarters. Starting in March, June, September, and December, each quarter lasts 3 months. Additionally, from July to August, a summer session is offered. Students are placed in classes according to their levels. Each class consists of 7 to l0 students. Classes last 3 hours per day for a minimum of 15 class hours per week. Extra classes may be offered or added to the curriculum according to student demands.Culture classes: Culture classes are offered each week in increments of 2 , 4 or 6 hours. Sessions start in January, April, July and October. Each session lasts 2 months.Elective courses: In addition to the regular daily language classes, students can take elective courses to meet their interests or improve their language skills, such as conversation, reading, writing or listening comprehension. Classes are held once a week in 2, 4 and 6 hours increments following MTC's curriculum plan.Monthly courses: In order to accommodate the needs of a broader range of international students for short-term Chinese language study, MTC also offers short-term, intensive language courses. Short-term study tours: For groups of 15 or more. Course length, course work and course content can be customized to meet the needs of each group.Mandarin Summer Camp: Designed for students between the ages of 8 and 15, includes both Chinese language coursework and activities which engage students in local culture.
