2017-2018

Countywide Music Department Events Policy Procedures, Expectations, and Responsibilities

Revised August 2017

1. Expectations & Responsibilities of MS & HS Ensemble Directors:

• Be present for the majority of ensemble appropriate system wide music events, which include auditions, rehearsals, and concerts.

• Attend, participate, and contribute in a minimum of three county coordinated director’s meetings

throughout the school year.

• Inform students of county coordinated and endorsed enrichment activities, including providing ample time to prepare for events that require an audition,.

• Provide students with the correct audition materials.

In the event that a student arrives at an audition with the incorrect music prepared, the student will be given the correct music and up to thirty minutes to prepare the correct music before the audition.

• Communicate rules and guidelines clearly to students and parents related to their involvement in county sponsored music events.

• Confirm that students are members in good standing of a performing ensemble at the school and are therefore eligible for participation in county-wide music events. Only the music teacher who teaches the specific band, chorus, or orchestra class of the corresponding class for which the student is auditioning may initiate the application process for their students to audition and participate in All County activities.

• Submit completed forms by the communicated deadline. Forms submitted after the communicated deadlines will be invalid.

2. Policy and procedures for student participation in All County events: • Students must be a member in good standing of the specific ensemble for which they are

auditioning at All County. For example, a student auditioning for All County Chorus must be enrolled in a chorus class during the instructional day in order to participate.

• "Events" include, but are not limited to any and all auditions, rehearsals, and concerts. "Weekend of the event" refers to the final cluster of days, usually with a guest conductor, and may include some weekdays.

• Student participants are expected to attend all rehearsals in their entirety in order to maintain eligibility in the group.

When an absence is anticipated due to absence from school, school directors are expected to make contact with the manager before the rehearsal. Where there has been no prior notification, the event manager will call the student participant and contact the school music director. The Music Coordinator, Festivals Manager, and the assigned Events Facilitator shall then make a joint decision about the student’s continued eligibility for the event.

• Students and parents must return the signed commitment form and the Student Code of

Conduct before the audition.

• Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of each rehearsal.

• Unexcused absence and lateness (as stated in the Parent/Student commitment form) will result in student dismissal from the group and the event.

All County High School Chorus Audition Invitation

2017-2018 ________________________________________________is invited to audition for the 2017 Anne Arundel County All County High School Chorus. An invitation does not guarantee acceptance, however. Final acceptance will be based on the audition scores. The county-wide music events of Anne Arundel County Public Schools are planned by music teachers and the Music Office to give our outstanding students opportunities for music performance at a level beyond that usually available in the individual school. A guest conductor of strong reputation is invited to work with students and the ensemble is formed through auditions. Balanced voicing, essential for performing the music appropriately, is also considered. The time with the conductor is critical to effective ensemble performance and musical unity. The active commitment to the process and the concert are the ingredients that have produced the excellence in which we take pride. Anne Arundel County Public School students, who are participating as members in good standing of the chorus class at the school, as affirmed by the specific music teacher, are eligible for participation in county-wide events. All students must participate in the audition and attend the entire length of all rehearsals in order to maintain eligibility. The Anne Arundel County Music Office understands that talented students have opportunities for many choices. The All County Chorus experience is a unique opportunity for students; therefore the choice must be made to attend all the rehearsals in their entirety, with no exceptions. The attached Parent/Student Commitment Form and the Student Code of Conduct which clearly articulate the level of commitment for this event must be agreed to, signed, and returned before the student participates in the audition. The auditions and rehearsals will be held at ARUNDEL HIGH SCHOOL. The final dress rehearsals and concert will be held at SOUTHERN HIGH SCHOOL. The concert will also include the All County Middle School Chorus performance. The schedule of events are as follows:

BSO Young Soloist 2017-2018

Audition: Thursday, October 12, 2017; 2:30-5:00 PM; Meyerhoff Symphony Hall Concert Date: Thursday, December 14, 2017; 10:30 AM, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in a public secondary school in Anne Arundel County. Students must be participating members in good standing of a performing ensemble at the school, as affirmed by the specific music teacher. The soloist must be available for all Side-by-Side rehearsals as determined by the conductor. Musicianship and conduct must be exemplary. Interested students should plan to audition on a concerto movement or other selection in the appropriate standard edition for orchestral performance. The audition selection must be the work intended for performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Use of transcriptions and arrangements are not acceptable except by advance approval from the Coordinator of Music. The expectations of the soloists are extremely high and those auditioning should be capable of achieving a superior rating on a grade VI composition in a Maryland district Solo and Ensemble Festival. The performer selected will have one rehearsal with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Performance and audition time will be no greater than twelve minutes each. Therefore, a selection of extended length must be suitable for being shortened. Performance by memory and with piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged. There is a minimum standard of excellence for the experience and it may be deemed appropriate to select no applicants. Students applying for "Side-by-Side" and "Young Soloist" should complete both forms in their entirety. Applications will be accepted for string instruments, brass, woodwinds, piano, percussion, and guitar. Those auditioning must supply their own accompanist. One piano will be available. Pianists will audition on solo parts unaccompanied. Percussionists will provide their own instruments unless specific arrangements are made by the player with the BSO. Auditioners will include Baltimore Symphony and AACPS Music Office personnel. Audition participants should enter at the side entrance of the Meyerhoff and check with the receptionist for room location. An audition time will be designated for each applicant. Guidelines for family seating and transportation as described for "Side-by-Side" also apply to the "Young Soloist."

Refer to Side-by-Side Schedule for Rehearsals

BSO Criteria for Young Soloist Concerto Pieces:

1. Please choose works originally published before 1923 if possible. This means that the work will most likely be in the public domain, and the orchestral parts will be available for purchase, or already in the BSO library. If you cannot determine the original date of publication, please consult the BSO. Works published after 1923 may be approved if limited repertoire has been composed for the student’s instrument. Please contact the BSO as soon as you are considering a work published after 1923.

2. Please consider the ending of the movement you are selecting, and choose a movement with a concert ending. Endings that may not work are ones that run attacca into the next movement, for example. If the student selects a movement with multiple options for an ending, please contact the library to let them know of existing concert endings for the movement. If it is a piece in the standard repertoire, the library may have an ending prepared. When in doubt about the ending of your movement, or if there are any questions, please contact the BSO.

3. Please choose a movement from the concerto with maximum duration of 12 minutes. Please

contact the BSO if you wish to perform a movement longer than 12 minutes.

4. Please consider the orchestral instrumentation of the piece you wish to perform. To ensure that your concerto meets BSO orchestral limitations, please contact the BSO.

Failure to adhere to the above criteria may result in disqualification.

All County High School Orchestra Audition Invitation

2017-2018 ______________________________________________ is invited to audition for the 2017 Anne Arundel County Public Schools All County High School Orchestra. There is a guest conductor of strong reputation, students are selected by audition, and instrumentation and voicing is balanced so that the music can be performed appropriately. The time with the conductor is critical to effective ensemble performance and musical unity. The active commitment to the process and to the concert is the ingredient that has ensured excellence over time. No participant is unimportant; each depends on the other. Anne Arundel County Public School students, who are participating as members in good standing of the orchestra class at the school, as affirmed by the specific music teacher, are eligible for participation in county-wide events. All students must participate in the audition and attend the entire length of all rehearsals in order to maintain eligibility. The Anne Arundel County Music Office understands that talented students have opportunities for many choices. The All County Orchestra experience is a unique opportunity for students; therefore the choice must be made to attend all the rehearsals in their entirety, with no exceptions. The attached Parent/Student Commitment Form and the Student Code of Conduct which clearly articulate the level of commitment for this event must be agreed to, signed, and returned before the student participates in the audition. The All County High School Orchestra auditions will be held at North County High School. All rehearsals and the final performance will take place at North County High School. High School Choral Festival Northeast High School March 21 and 22, 2018

8:00 AM - 2:00 PM

The Maryland District III High School Choral Festival follows the Festival Guidelines of the Maryland Choral Educators Association (MCEA). Purpose: Choral festivals are educational experiences that are an extension of the curriculum of Anne Arundel County Public Schools. They are performance assessments provided by expert adjudicators for the purpose of assessing curriculum delivery and improving and measuring both the student and teacher skills. All schools are expected to participate and all schools are expected to stay to listen to at least two other group performances. Process: All choruses will perform two prepared selections, in addition to an optional warm-up piece. The two adjudicated selections are to be chosen only from the Maryland Choral Educators State Choral List. The MCEA list is available online. The music listed on the Festival application is to be the music performed at the Festival. Risers, piano, acoustic shell and conductor’s stand will be provided. Other instruments as indicated in the scores of individual pieces are the responsibility of the school. Recorded accompaniments will not be allowed. All choruses will be provided approximately fifteen minutes of warm-up time in an appropriate warm-up room. Each group will then be allotted twenty minutes for their performance, which includes getting on and off stage. If the performance extends over the allotted time, the ensemble may be penalized. After the stage performance, each group will be directed to the designated room for the sight-reading portion of the adjudication. Choruses will sight-read according to the guidelines established by the MCEA. It is expected that all choruses will stay to listen to at least two other groups during their performance day. Evaluation: Adjudicators will be using digital recorders in conjunction with the comment sheets. The comment sheets will be used primarily for the final grades given for each category as well as the overall grading in keeping with MCEA rules. Non-public School Participation: There will be a $100.00 entry fee per ensemble for schools other than Anne Arundel County Public Schools; please attach the fee to the application. Please make the check payable to Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Particulars and Deadlines: Please provide three (3) measure-numbered original scores of each performance selection for the adjudicators. Place all scores in one over-sized manila envelope, clearly marked with the Director’s name and group identification. A guide will collect the packets from you when you enter the auditorium. Finally, remember that all groups must be adequately chaperoned at all times, and chaperone assignments must comply with the AACPS chaperone to student ratio.

You will submit your festival application(s) via the internet using this link. Please be sure to read the MCEA rules and regulations. The deadline for registration and fees is February 5, 2018, by 3:30 PM. Questions you may have about rules, regulations, scheduling, etc., may be directed to Julie Olson, Music Festivals Manager, Anne Arundel County Public Schools at 410-222-5467 or via email, [email protected]. MCEA Choral Festival Sight-Reading Procedures: 1. Choruses will be escorted to the sight-reading location immediately following their performance. 2. No audience, with the exception of choral festival staff, shall be in the sight-reading room. 3. Middle and high school choruses will sight read music at the grade level of entry. If two adjudicated selections are two or more grade levels apart, the group will sight read one grade level lower than the higher level selection. 4. Schools with two performing ensembles with shared personnel performing the same grade level adjudicated selections will not sight read at the same grade levels. One group will sight read at the assigned level, and the other will sight read at a higher level. The level of sight- reading for each group will be decided by the adjudicator in the sight-reading room. 5. After the chorus is seated, the adjudicator will explain the sight-reading procedure in the script used by all sight-reading adjudicators. The students will not open the music at this time. 6. There will be no piano accompaniment at any time during the sight-reading. All practices and performances will be sung a cappella. The piano/keyboard will be used ONLY by the adjudicator to establish tonality and to give beginning pitches. SIGHT-READING SCRIPT: There are two sections to the sight-reading procedure, a rhythmic section and a melodic section. The process for each 8-measure section is similar. You will have a study period, a practice performance and a performance that is judged. I will lead you through the rhythmic section. Your teacher will work with you on the melodic section. Rhythmic Sight-Reading Instructions: On my signal, you will turn the example over. You have one minute to study the example silently and independently. I will then set the tempo on the metronome and lead you through the exercise, once for practice and a second time for a grade. Study Period: Your one minute of study begins now. (Demonstrate beat counts) (quarter note = 66 for 3/4 and 4/4 time, and dotted quarter note = 54 for 6/8 time) (Explain that 6/8 is compound time, and that although only two beats are felt, the music is subdivided into six 8th note counts.) I will be using a metronome to set and maintain the tempo throughout the exercise. When clapping, please use two fingers, (demonstrate) so everyone will be able to hear the metronome and stay with the beat. This is how I will count off for 4/4 time, 1, 2, 3, begin. (for ¾ time, 1, 2, begin; for 6/8 time, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, begin.) First Performance, Non-Adjudicated: At the cue of the adjudicator, the chorus will perform the rhythmic example. The adjudicator will set and maintain the tempo. The choir director will determine the method of rhythmic presentation (clap, speak, or sing syllables).

Page 34: HANDBOOK FOR COUNTYWIDE MUSIC EVENTS

34

Cultivating Lifelong Learners, Creators, and Consumers of Music

Second Performance, Adjudicated: The chorus will perform the example for adjudication, with the adjudicator setting and maintaining the tempo. Melodic Sight-Reading Instructions: During the melodic section, your director will be given five minutes to study the melodic example with you, with the following guidelines:

• The director may indicate key or time signatures or point out certain difficult passages and talk about them.

• The director may choose to have the choir practice the rhythms aloud, or speak through the example on solfege syllables.

• Teachers may use Curwen hand signs during the practice times, but not during the graded performance. Students may use Curwen hand signs during the practice times and during the graded performance.

• There is to be no vocalizing - singing or humming - by the director or choir, with one exception (below). The director may choose to have students read silently through the example without vocalizing. To facilitate this internal reading, at your director's request, I will play the scale and tonic chord of the melodic sight reading example followed by the starting pitch for each section. The chorus may sing along with the scale, may sing an arpeggio with the tonic chord and hum their starting pitch(es). I will establish tonality and give starting pitches only once during the five-minute study period. At the conclusion of the study period, I will play the scale, tonic chord and starting pitches, and you may sing along. Your director sets and maintains a tempo, and leads you through the exercise, once for practice and a second time for a grade. After the practice performance, you will be given one additional minute for study. I will establish tonality before the performance that counts.

Study Period - Five Minutes You may begin your five minutes of study. (Establish tonality upon request, only once. Play the scale from “do to do,” ascending and descending (or up and down), the tonic chord and the starting pitch or pitches. Students are allowed to sing along with the scale, may sing the tonic arpeggio or whatever they are used to, and hum their starting pitch.) First Performance, Non-Adjudicated: At the end of the five-minute study period, tonality will be reestablished. During this performance the director may tap, snap, or clap a steady pulse but may NOT sing, speak, tap, snap, or clap exact rhythms for the choir. At the conclusion of the first performance: the director is allowed one additional minute of study. At this time the director may discuss problem areas with the choir. Remember, there is to be no vocalizing. Second Performance, Adjudicated: Following the first performance and director’s comments, tonality will be reestablished. At the conclusion of the second reading, the choir will remain seated until all of the music has been handed in and counted.

All music selections must meet full compliance with the United States Copyright Laws. Anne Arundel County Public Schools Music Copyright Guidelines: Any use of illegally copied music by students, accompanists, or for presentation to adjudicators will result in a penalty of one grade. Emergency use of copies will be allowed only if accompanied by order verification from the publisher or a bona fide vendor. Given adequate notice, the Music Office will assist in securing music through the Henry Rosso Memorial Music Library for students unable to afford personal copies, or when school MOI allocations are not adequate.

All County Middle School Chorus Audition Invitation

2017-2018

___________________________________________ is invited to audition for the 2017 Anne Arundel County All County Middle School Chorus. An invitation, however, does NOT guarantee acceptance. Acceptance for one year does not mean acceptance for the next year. Final selections will be based on the audition scores.

The county-wide music events of Anne Arundel County Public Schools are planned by music teachers and the Music Office to give our outstanding students opportunities for music performance at a level beyond that usually available in the individual school. There is a guest conductor of strong reputation and the ensemble is formed through student auditions. Balanced voicing, essential for performing the music appropriately, is also considered. The time with the conductor is critical to effective ensemble performance and musical unity. The active commitment to the process and the concert is the ingredient that has produced the excellence in which we take pride. No participant is unimportant; each depends on the other.

Anne Arundel County Public School students, who are participating as members in good standing of the chorus class at the school, as affirmed by the specific music teacher, are eligible for participation in county-wide events. All students must participate in the audition and attend the entire length of all rehearsals in order maintain eligibility. The Anne Arundel County Music Office understands that talented students have opportunities for many choices. The All County Middle School Chorus experience is a unique opportunity for students; therefore the choice must be made to attend all the rehearsals in their entirety, with no exceptions. The attached Parent/Student Commitment Form and the Student Code of Conduct which clearly articulate the level of commitment for this event must be agreed to, signed, and returned before the student participates in the audition.

All County Middle School Band Audition Invitation

2017-2018

___________________________________________ is invited to audition for the 2018 Anne Arundel County All County Middle School Band. An invitation, however, does NOT guarantee acceptance. Acceptance for a previous year does not mean acceptance for the current year. Final selections will be based on the audition scores. The county-wide music events of Anne Arundel County Public Schools are planned by music teachers and the Music Office to give our outstanding students opportunities for music performance at a level beyond that usually available in the individual school. There is a guest conductor of strong reputation, students are selected by audition, and instrumentation and voicing is balanced so that the music can be performed appropriately. The time with the conductor is critical to effective ensemble performance and musical unity. The active commitment to this process and to the concert is the ingredient that has ensured excellence over time. No participant is unimportant; each depends on the other. Anne Arundel County Public School students, who are participating as members in good standing of the band class at the school, as affirmed by the specific music teacher, are eligible for participation in county-wide events. All students must participate in the audition and attend the entire length of all rehearsals in order to maintain eligibility. The Anne Arundel County Music Office understands that talented students have opportunities for many choices. The All County Middle School Band experience is a unique opportunity for students; therefore the choice must be made to attend all the rehearsals in their entirety, with no exceptions. The attached Parent/Student Commitment Form and the Student Code of Conduct which clearly articulate the level of commitment for this event must be agreed to, signed, and returned before the student participates in the audition. All auditions, rehearsals, and performances will be held at Annapolis High School. The concert will also include the All County High School Band performance. The schedule is as follows:

Middle School Choral Festival Southern High School March 6, and 7, 2017

8:00 AM-4:00 PM The Maryland District III Middle School Choral Festival follows the Festival Guidelines of the Maryland Choral Educators Association (MCEA). All choruses will be provided fifteen minutes of warm-up time in an appropriate warm-up room. Each group will then be allotted fifteen minutes for their performance, which includes getting on and off stage. Non-public School Participation: There will be a $100.00 entry fee per event for schools other than Anne Arundel County Public Schools; please attach the fee to the application.

Finally, remember that all groups must be adequately chaperoned at all times, and chaperone assignments must comply with the AACPS chaperone to student ratio. You will submit your festival application(s) via the internet using this link. Please be sure to read the MCEA rules and regulations. The deadline for registration, stage maps, and fees is February 5, 2018, by 3:30 PM. A guide will collect the packets from you when you enter the auditorium. Questions you may have about rules, regulations, scheduling, etc., may be directed to Julie Olson, Music Festivals Manager, Anne Arundel County Public Schools at 410-222-5467or via email, [email protected].

The level of sight-reading for each group will be decided by the adjudicator in the sight-reading room.

Study Period Your one minute of study begins now.

Page 52: HANDBOOK FOR COUNTYWIDE MUSIC EVENTS

52

Cultivating Lifelong Learners, Creators, and Consumers of Music

Maryland District III Middle School Band and Orchestra Festival

North County High School March 14, 15, & 16, 2018

8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Maryland District III Middle School Band and Orchestra Festival follows the Festival Guidelines of the Maryland Band Directors' Association (MBDA) and the Maryland Orchestra Directors' Association (MODA). Purpose: Band and Orchestra Festivals are educational experiences that are an extension of the music curriculum of Anne Arundel County Public Schools. They are performance assessments provided by expert adjudicators for the purpose of assessing curriculum delivery and improving and measuring both the student and teacher skills. All schools are expected to participate and all schools are expected to stay to listen to at least two other group performances. Process: All bands must play a warm-up selection (march or chorale) and two prepared selections. The warm-up must not last longer than five minutes in length. No “TBA” indications are allowed, even for the warm-up selection. The prepared selections must be from the MBDA Band Festival Music List listed on the MMEA Web page. Grade level will be determined by MBDA rules. All orchestras may enter as a full or a string orchestra. All Orchestras must play a warm-up selection, followed by two prepared selections from the current MODA Orchestra List. The warm-up selection should not exceed five minutes. No “TBA” indications are allowed, even for the warm-up selection. The prepared selections must be from the MODA Graded Music Lists from the MMEA website, from the full orchestra section for full orchestras, and from the string orchestra section for string orchestras. Grade level will be determined by MODA rules. All Directors must furnish three (3) full or condensed scores for each of the two adjudicated selections. Measures must be numbered. Failure to provide three (3) measure-numbered scores for each of the two adjudicated selections will result in a penalty of one grade lower. All Directors will conduct their ensembles from the podium. Directors will not be permitted to accompany their groups. All bands and orchestras will be provided about twenty minutes of warm-up time before the stage time. Time limits on stage will depend on the grade level of the music being performed. Groups performing grades II and III will receive twenty-five minutes and groups performing grades IV, V, and VI will be allotted thirty minutes for the performance. Please note that the time parameters involving the warm-up room and the stage performance include the time it takes to unpack instruments and the time it takes to get on and off the stage. If the performance extends over the allotted time, the ensemble may be penalized. After the stage performance, each group will be directed to the designated room for the sight-reading portion of the adjudication. Bands and Orchestras will sight-read according to the procedures as described in the MBDA and MODA manuals. Schools with two performing ensembles with shared personnel playing the same grade level adjudicated selections will not sight-read at the same grade levels. One group will sight-read at the

assigned level and the other will sight-read at a higher level. The level of sight-reading for each group will be decided by the adjudicator in the sight-reading room. In the case of a full orchestra, only strings are required to sight-read. The sight-reading room is a closed activity except to performers, director, and festival staff. It is expected that all bands and orchestras will stay to listen to at least two other groups during their performance day. Evaluation: Adjudicators will be using digital recorders in conjunction with the comment sheets. The comment sheets will be used primarily for the final grades given for each category as well as the overall grading in keeping with MBDA and MODA rules. Non-public School Participation: There will be a $100.00 entry fee per ensemble for schools other than Anne Arundel County Public Schools; please attach the fee to the application. Please make the check payable to Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Particulars and Deadlines: Please note that a minimal stage crew will be available. You are responsible for supplying a detailed map of your set-up when you submit festival registration materials. Your assistance and patience with the set-up process will ensure a positive experience for all. Please also provide three (3) measure-numbered original scores of each performance selection for the adjudicators. Place all scores in one over-sized manila envelope, clearly marked with the Director’s name and group identification. Finally, remember that all groups must be adequately chaperoned at all times, and chaperone assignments must comply with the AACPS chaperone to student ratio. You will submit your festival application(s) via the internet using this link. Please be sure to read the MBDA and MODA rules and regulations. The Anne Arundel County Instrumental and Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival is a wonderful educational extension provided for all Anne Arundel County Public School music students in middle school and high school. The Festival gives students the opportunity to receive performance evaluations by expert adjudicators for the purpose of improving and measuring music skills. Students are then able to participate in the State Festival, once requirements are met. Directors should make this opportunity available to all students. Anne Arundel County vocal students in grades 9-12, who are members in good standing of the vocal ensemble in their school, may choose to participate in the Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival. Anne Arundel County instrumental students in grades 6-12, who are members in good standing of an instrumental ensemble at their school, may choose to take part in the Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Festival. The Maryland Band Directors Association and the Maryland Orchestra Directors Association will regulate the Anne Arundel County instrumental registrations as found in the most current versions of the MBDA and MODA Festival manuals. The Maryland Choral Educators Association will regulate the vocal entries as found in the most current version of the MCEA Festival manual. Students who hope to participate in the State Solo and Ensemble Festival for either instrumental or vocal must conform to these rules. Solo and ensemble music must be taken from the current MCEA, MODA and MBDA manuals. Any selection not listed in these manuals will automatically be entered as "COMMENTS ONLY." Guitar solo selections are taken from the NYSSMA manual. Teachers will submit student registrant data online, by accessing the website, www.soloandensemble.org. Once online, teachers will register for a password and be able to enter data for each solo and ensemble participant. The deadline for entering the information is February 10, 2017. After that date, a ten dollar late fee will be assessed per event. The last date to access the website for late entries is February 17, 2017. If you have any questions about accessing and using the website, please contact Julie Olson, at the AACPS Music Office: [email protected] or 410-222-5467. The scheduling software will keep a tally of all fees owed for events entered. Once you have completed your entries, please remit ONE check per teacher (one for chorus students, etc.) for the total amount owed to the Music Office, Carol Parham Board of Education Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. Checks should be made payable to Anne Arundel County Public Schools. All fees for the Instrumental and Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival must be received before events will be scheduled. This will be strictly enforced. The fee is $8.00 per event. The deadline for the amount owed is Friday, February 26, 2018. Teachers will still need to complete the forms included in this packet and keep them on file for student records. Instrumental and Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival even when students and parents complete them. It is necessary for teachers to make the MCEA, MODA and MBDA manuals accessible to students and to give them guidance. Remember that information must be compatible with the manual. For example, grade level of music must be specified and page numbers or selection numbers in collections must be cited exactly as in the manual. Substitution of music or personnel after a deadline makes the form invalid except in the following cases: A school principal may request in writing that a substitution of personnel be made for an ensemble for reasons such as severe illness or family emergency. The request must include reasonable detail to enable a decision and be signed by the principal. Substitutions may be made for no more than 50% of an ensemble. An emergency substitution request may be made by the principal up to 24 hours prior to the start of an event. It is important that emergency substitutions be made as early as possible in order to give the ensemble adequate rehearsal time. Substitution requests should be forwarded to the Festivals Manager. FROM the MBDA and MODA MANUALS INSTRUMENTAL SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL GUIDELINES 1. ELIGIBILITY A solo or ensemble participant must be a bona fide member of the band or orchestra of the school he represents. (For Anne Arundel County: Students who are participating as members in good standing of a performing ensemble, as affirmed by the music teacher, are eligible to participate in county-wide music events.) The applicant must be enrolled in any secondary school in the state of Maryland (grades 6-12). All applications must be properly filled out and signed by the director and the school principal.

Only those soloists or ensembles that receive a "I" rating in the District Festival are eligible to enter the State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Further, only District Festival events of Graded Music, Grades II through VI, may enter the State Festival. Solos and ensembles must enter the State Solo and Ensemble Festival at the same or higher-grade level than they entered at the district level. In special cases, a soloist or an ensemble may contact the festival chairperson to request permission to perform in another district assessment. However, a soloist or ensemble may not enter (for rating or comments) more than one district festival. For the State Solo and Ensemble Festival, all soloists and ensembles must perform on the scheduled State Festival date and at the State Festival site. Although District Chairpersons are responsible for organizing their District Solo and Ensemble Festival in a manner which best suits the needs of their district, it is to be understood that any solo or ensemble participant must have participated in a District Festival which meets the following State Solo and Ensemble Festival Guidelines: 2. CLASSIFICATION OF EVENTS Participants may enter the festival on six (6) grade levels designated according to music difficulty. Each of the following six grade levels will be open to students from any secondary school:

I - Easy IV - Moderately Difficult II - Moderately Easy V - Difficult III - Average VI - Very Difficult

3. ENTRANCE LIMITATIONS Schools may send as many soloists and ensembles in any event that they desire. A student may enter in up to three (3) events.

Failure to provide this music will result in a penalty of one rating. The Maryland Band Directors Association and the Maryland Orchestra Directors Association expects full compliance with copyright regulations for all music used in the District Festival and State Festival.

Festival. 11. REQUIREMENTS FOR SCALE PERFORMANCE FOR THE INSTRUMENTAL SOLOIST Participants in all solo instrumental events except snare drum and timpani must perform certain scales in addition to their prepared solo. All entrants will be asked to perform the chromatic scale and one major scale appropriate for their instrument and grade level of solo performance.
