Seoul Handong Global University campus is in Pohang, the high-tech based city where POSCO, the world’s 4th largest steel-making company, is located. There are various science research institutes in the area of nuclear technology, automobile, environment, shipbuilding, and robotics within city with three other colleges and universities. Pohang city also offers lively atmosphere yet boasts beautiful mountains and beaches nearby. HGU campus sits right next to calm neighbor with warm ambience. Moreover, Gyeongju, an ancient Silla Dynasty’s* capital where its splendid buddhist culture and architecture still exist, is located next to Pohang. Major cities such as Seoul and Busan are easily accessible by public transport with affordable costs.

UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT United Nations Academic Impact(UNAI), a global initiative that aligns educational institutions with the United Nations in active support for 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, l i teracy, sustainabi l i ty and conflict resolution.

OECD INTERNSHIP PROGRAM In 2008, HGU signed in internship agreement with OECD in the first place among universities in Korea. 2 or 3 Handong students deployed in OECD in Information Technology and Network Service internship since the agreement.

UNESCO-UNITWIN HOST UNIVERSITY University Twinning and Networking Program was established in 1992 fol lowing the relevant decision of UNESCO’s General Conference in all of UNESCO’s fields of competence by bu i ld ing un ivers i ty networks and encouraging inter-university cooperation through the transfer of knowledge across borders. The combination of IT, Global Management, Law education in HGU caught the interests of the Universities in the developing countries including Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, selecting HGU as an UNITWIN Host University in Korea in 2007.

UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT GLOBAL HUB HGU is selected as a principal hub for UNAI in the category of «  Capacity Building for Higher Education Systems  » as of January 20, 2011. The UNAI Global Hub empowers developing states in educational capacity by transferring know-how of its interdisciplinary studies and whole person education. As a Global Hub, HGU recently organized 2014 UNAI-HGU Samoa Forum in Apia, Samoa with cooperation from National University of Samoa.

Academic ExcellenceUndeclared Major Enrollment & Interdisciplinary Education through Multiple Majors Students are given opportunities to find majors that suit them, and may remain undeclared for a year. During this period, students take part in the university’s mandatory English and computer education programs. Even after choosing a major, a student can choose to transfer to another department. Students are expected to acquire expertise in their major, while acquiring additional knowledge in an adjoining field.

International Communication Education English education at HGU is both distinctive and pragmatic, for students learn that practical use of English through direct contact with foreign faculty members. To prepare for playing a significant role in an international society and for establishing a global viewpoint, HGU offers foreign language program consisting of French, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German, and Russian. The Program is designed for students to become familiar with the languages in their daily lives.

Students who are currently enrolled in one of the overseas partner institutions of the HGU can apply as an exchange student. The tuition may be completely waived or as much as 4,000 USD for one semester depending on the partnership agreement between partnering school and HGU. If a student is not from one of the partner institutions, the student may choose to apply as a visiting student. Visiting students pay tuition (USD 5,000) to Handong.

Eligibility You are eligible to apply to enroll at HGU for one or two semesters as exchange/visiting student if you meet the following qualifications:

• Currently enrolled as a full-time student pursuing 4-yearundergraduate degree and completed at least 1 academic year(sophomore standing or higher)

• Recommended and referred by exchange coordinator ofinstitutions that has student exchange agreement with HGU.

• Good academic standing at your current university (GPA of 2.5/4.0or higher for exchange student; 3.0/4.0 or higher for visitingstudent. If your school uses a different scale for GPA, pleasecontact us

• Must have no criminal record (drug or alcohol abuse, expulsion,suspension, violation of code of conduct of belonging school)

Academic Period HGU’s one academic year is composed of two regular semesters (Spring & fall). Spring semester starts from March to June where Fall semester starts from September to December. One regular semester is composed of 16 weeks including the midterm and final test week. International students may register up to 2 semesters as a full time, ‘non-degree’ student.

Credit & Grade International Students can take up to 22 credits (approx. 7~9 courses per semester). Assessment criteria will be decided by the class professors. All students are required to attend at least 75% of class time in order to pass the class.

Other Extracurricular ActivitiesGlobal Entrepreneurship Program (GEP) The GEP is the premier trial offering of the accelerated inventive program which was initially developed under the UNDP project for selected students. Through the program, students are able to taste the Entrepreneurial spirit, learn the basic skill-set necessary to become an Entrepreneur, compete in the business competitions to learn how their plans compare with others’ in the class, and have a chance to network with other students from other countries for potential multi-national ventures.

Korean Culture Experience Program Office of International Community Advancement (OICA) hosts a time for Korean cultural experience (Yandong Folk Village & Gyeongju Expo in 2015) for international students. A variety of cultural programs are provided to familiarize international students with Korean culture.

Korean Tutoring Korean Tutoring provided by Korean students at no charge. It is a great opportunity to learn Korean language and culture and make Korean friends.

International Buddy System (IBS) International Buddy System is a program hosted by the Handong Student Government to provide better opportunities for international students and Korean students to get to know one another and learn different cultures. Those who apply for the IBS will be paired with a Korean student to participate in a variety of events prepared by the Handong Student Government.

Internship and Volunteering HGU’s connection with multinational corporation such as Samsung, LG, POSCO, and home businesses (over 300), law firms, and NGOs will make great opportunity to international students to experience internship or volunteering during their study in HGU.
