Operational Oceanography ?EuroGOOS definition: Operational Oceanography can be defined as the activity of systematic and long-term routine measurements of the seas and oceans and atmosphere, and their rapid interpretation and dissemination. Important products derived from operational oceanography are: o nowcasts providing the most usefully accurate description of the present state of the sea including living resources o forecasts providing continuous forecasts of the future condition of the sea for as far ahead as possible o hindcasts assembling long term data sets which will provide data for description of past states, and time series showing
trends and changes

The marine environmental convenstions were established and these introduced operational water quality observations

There are many more exampels of sustained operational oceanography that have
emerged from user requests.
What’s then the challenge?

Observed Data are the Trouth and
most of Ocean Space is undersampled in relation to the
required information
Hans Dahlin, EuroGOOS, 2008-05-15 1st Marine Board Forum, Oostende
Challenge 1:To make the observation• to find sustained resources
• to make the correct observations to produce the required information
• to resolve temporal and spatial scales
• to find accurate, robust and affordable technology
• ...
Challenge 2: To save the observation• secure storage
• standardised description of variables
• standardised description of quality
• ...
Challenge 3: To make the observation accessible• fixed rules for all users
• to make the data available in a timely manner
• standardised meta information
• ...

Cost efficiancy is necessary
Hans Dahlin, EuroGOOS, 2008-05-15 1st Marine Board Forum, Oostende
Challenge 4: To produce information and services jointly at European and regional scales
• reduce cost
• best practice
• standardised products
• ...

EuroGOOS Goals (1996)
1. Building on Scientific SuccessTime to get the full benefit of European investments in basic and strategic research
2. Creating New Operational Marine ServicesCreate new businesses and new jobs in Europe
3. Developing a Global SystemThrough European collaboration wield influance on a global scale, and to meet public expectations

Implementation of the Marine GMES,Global monitoring for environment and security
EuroGOOS has been involved in the preparations for the marine part of GMES since 2001.
EuroGOOS has actively participated in workshops, meetings, panels and projects.
The EuroGOOS regions are strongly involved in the implementation process through projects as MerSea, ECOOP, and soon MyOcean

From Observations to Information/ServicesRequirement
Production
Hans Dahlin, EuroGOOS, 2008-05-15 1st Marine Board Forum, Oostende
To summarise:We have the concept -the challenges are to
• make the necessary observations– save the observations– make the observations accessible
• as far as possible jointly produce required information and services
• understand user requirements
....then we can continue to develop the science
