(Left to right) Roscommon County Commissioner Vice-chairman Marc Milburn and Chairman Rob-ert Schneider, Denton Township Supervisor Craig Cotterman and State Senator Darwin Booher pose with Governor Rick Snyder and the newly signed Public Act 16 on March 30 in Lansing. “Public Act 16 of 2011 allocates $102 million in restricted funds from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for natural resources improvement projects across the state,” according to a press release from Senator Booher’s office. The release stated that Milburn, Sch-
neider and Cotterman were invited to the signing for their assistance with the Trestle Park project, Denton Township. The project will receive $372,700 toward the development of the township-owned land on Houghton Lake to be turned into a community park. “It is always great to work with township officials and county commissioners in a bipartisan effort to make our county a better place to live. Darwin Booher is an excellent senator who will represent our district effec-tively during his tenure,” Milburn said in a prepared statement about the signing. (Courtesy photo)

The Houghton Lake Public Library continues its longstanding tradition of celebrating National Library Week – April 11 through 16 – with the return of the Great Big Reading Raffle.
Anyone who visits the library or checks out library materials during Na-tional Library Week will get a ticket to enter in the raffle featuring reading-relat-ed prizes for all ages. Prize winners will be drawn and notified April 18.
Patrons are encouraged to attend and take part in this year’s theme: Cre-ate Your Own Story@Your Library with these free programs:
• “Young @ Heart” – Central Michi-gan University Public Television and the Houghton Lake Public Library will pres-ent the premiere event of a new Indepen-dent Film Series April 11. Get ready to rock with the most entertaining golden oldies you will ever meet in the senior citizen’s chorus, Young @ Heart. With a show only weeks away, the chorus must learn a slate of new songs ranging from James Brown to Coldplay. The director of the chorus leads them through tough rehearsals, proving that rock and roll can be hard work. Climaxing in a trium-phant performance, this inspiring story celebrates the unbreakable bonds of friendship and the life-affirming power of music. A “meet and greet” (including refreshments) begins at 9:30 a.m. with the one-hour film to be shown at 10:00
a.m. A discussion will follow. • Welcome Wigglers! – Stories, songs
and activities for listeners ages 3-5 will be presented April 13 at 10:30 a.m. Fun, free and open to the public, Wigglers lays the groundwork for reading and offers a wonderful opportunity for chil-dren, parents and caregivers to socialize. The program will continue through May 18. Registration is not required.
• Silly Bandz Bingo – Children ages seven to 12, may attend this fun after school program April 13 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to play bingo, eat snacks and win prizes of Silly Bandz!
• Mother Goose on the Loose! – For wee ones up to three years old, this pro-gram will offer rhymes, songs, puppets and music just right for babies and tod-dlers starting April 14 at 10:30 a.m. The program continues through May 19. Registration is not required.
• Genealogy – Get the Real Story! – The Roscommon County Genealogy Society will welcome anyone interested in learning about genealogy to a special presentation April 14 at 1:30 p.m. by Nancy Bonifield. She will demonstrate a free research tool, www.familysearch.org. To reserve a place, call the RCGS at 366-1774. (Leave a message if there is no answer.)
• Michigan Notable Book Author Tour 2011 – “Sawdusted: Notes from a Post Boom Mill,” will be presented April
14 at 7 p.m. Former Houghton Lake resi-dent, Raymond Goodwin, will return to his roots to present his personal story of working in a nearby sawmill. One book reviewer noted these vignettes of “sawmill politics, pranks, and passions bring the long-silent saws buzzing back to life.”
The event is open to the public and anyone who worked in a sawmill is en-couraged to attend. Refreshments will be served. Copies of the book will be avail-able for purchase and may be signed by the author.
This program is part of the Library of Michigan’s 2011 “Michigan Notable Authors Tour” featuring writers whose engaging works were chosen as 2011 Michigan Notable Books. The 2011 Michigan Notable Books program and tour are made possible through the sup-port of the Library of Michigan, the Li-brary of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Department of Education, the Michi-gan Humanities Council, Cooley Law School, Auto-Owners Insurance and the Michigan Center for the Book. HLPL celebrating National Library Week
For the first time ever the Roscom-mon Area District Library will hold events to celebrate National Library Week. The week long celebration will be held from April 10 to 16.
RADL director Lisa Sutton said the goal behind National Library Week is to get the public involved with its library.
“We’re hoping to see many new peo-ple come in. The goal is for people to re-alize the library is fun,” Sutton said.
As this is the first time RADL has hosted a National Library Week celebra-tion, Sutton said the library created a schedule of activities that is targeted to all ages groups. She said there are activi-ties for the entire family.
April 12 - Spring Family Reading Bingo - Families can come to the library to pick up a family bingo card, which will be used to mark off reading activi-ties as families complete them. Bingo cards must be turned into the library by April 30. A prize drawing will be held for all families who turn in a card. Bingo will last from April 13 -30.
April 12 - Take a Wild Guess - RADL will host two guessing games, the first is guessing how many books are in the li-brary and the second is how many jel-lybeans are in a jar.
April 13, from 12-1 p.m.- Dan Fishel, historian, will host a presentation on the history of RADL. The public is welcome
to share their stories about the library’s history. A light lunch will be provided.
April 14 at 10:30 a.m. - Create Your Own Story - Children are invited to make their own book and each person will be able to choose a free book to take home.
April 14 from 5-6 p.m.- Silent Movie - A silent movie star-
ring Buster Keaton will be shown. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
April 15 from 2-5 p.m. - Resume Writing Workshop - During the work-shop participants will have the chance to learn not only about resumés but how to use the library’s e-Reader resources, the Michigan Electronic Library online business and jobs gateway.

The new rubberized material is non-porous helping to prevent the growth of molds or fungus. The floor is slip-resistant and can be maintained easily with a vacuum and wet mop. The CRAF Center is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. (Courtesy photo)

Curves of Houghton Lake is taking part in the 13th annual Curves Food Drive to collect non-perishable food and cash donations to benefit Project Help Our People Eat. The campaign began April 4 and will last through April 17.
Current members who make a $30 donation or an equivalent donation of food are eligible to receive a Curves re-usable food drive grocery bag. Through April 17, Curves will waive the member-ship fee for new members who donate a bag of non-perishable food or make a minimum donation of $30.
“Our goal is to top the donation that we made last year,” Curves of Hough-ton Lake owner Karen LaBranche said.
“This is a great opportunity for the mem-bers of our Curves community to help strengthen the Houghton Lake commu-nity, too. Everything that our members donate at our club will benefit local families in need.”
In addition to the food and monetary donations that each gym collects, Curves International is offering gyms the oppor-tunity to win cash prizes for their local food banks. Prizes will be awarded to clubs with the most food collected, clubs that beat their 2010 donation level by the largest amount and to two randomly selected clubs drawn from all the clubs who enter the contest.
Curves International founders Gary
and Diane Heavin got this year’s food drive started by appearing on ABC’s new show, Secret Millionaire, April 3.
“The past few years have been dif-ficult for many families,” Diane Heavin said. “Curves annual food drive is one way that everyone in the Houghton Lake area can make a real difference for a lo-cal family that is struggling. We encour-age everyone, not just our members or those who are thinking about joining our gym, to make a cash donation or drop off a bag of non-perishable food items in April.”
For information, call the Houghton Lake Curves at 366-1710.
