G E N E R A L M A N A G E R ’ SCorner

In recent issues of HapPENNings I have made note of the increased usage our Business Center has gotten over the past several months. For many of our members, the Business Center has played a critical role as a temporary office for coordinating their activities in New York. I was recently reminded that situations like our Business Center can occasionally become a bit too much of a good thing. The 11th Floor space, which houses the Business Center, is an area that the University of Pennsylvania (our landlord) has reserved for their exclusive usage. However, they have very generously agreed to let us use a large part of that space for our Business Center with certain restrictions.

First and foremost, the space on the 11th Floor is strictly “on loan.” That means that the University can reclaim it for any activities or usage they may need it for. Fortunately, this has only been for brief periods of time so far. When it does happen, the Business Center will not be avail-able to Penn Club members. Since we do not have any other space in our building that is suitable for business purposes, our members will need to make temporary alternative arrangements outside of the Clubhouse. In addition, the University personnel who have their offices on the 11th Floor have no relationship with the operation of the Penn Club, and should not be disturbed for Club related matters. There is signage in the Business Center explaining what to do if you should have any questions

or concerns. Finally, it is important to recognize that our Business Center is for the shared usage of all of our members. Out of consideration of your fellow members, we ask that you complete your tasks as quickly as possible and then vacate you work area so another member can have use of it. Your cooperation and understanding is greatly appreciated.

With the arrival of May, we begin to truly look forward to summer. The days are definitely longer and warmer, and the promise of a bit of time away surely calls to each and every one of us. Before that happens, I’d like to remind you of a couple of Club traditions that have become a big part of our lives. The first is our Annual Mothers’ Day Brunch. This year, it will occur on Sunday, May 9, 2010. This event has become increasingly popular and tends to fill up quickly. For that reason, I urge you to make your reservations now to avoid any disappointment. In addi-tion, please keep in mind that our Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. This night has drawn more and more attendees each year, and is one of the true highlights of our Club year. Please make sure to save June 8th on your calendar for a great Penn Club evening.

As always, my staff and I look forward to being a part of your continuing Penn Club experience. We hope to see you often at your home-away-from-home in New York.

World class it: Why Businesses succeed When it triumphs |

Who should attend? IT professionals and businessprofessionals interested in learning more abouthow the best IT departments operate.

Monday, May 3rd, 7:00 p.m. Technology execu-tives, especially chief information officers, have gained prominence in recent years. The best CIOs look beyond their department and realize they can be drivers of strategic change by virtue of their unique perch in the corporate struc-ture. Whereas in the past IT departments were straightforward order-takers from their business counterparts, today IT operates as the central nervous system of corporations. The career path from CIO to CEO has emerged.

Peter High, C ’96, has, for the past decade, served as the president of Metis Strategy, LLC advising IT executives at Fortune 500 companies, and has distilled principles that the best of them follow. In his book, World Class IT: Why Businesses Succeed When IT Triumphs,

Peter identifies people, infrastructure, proj-ect & portfolio management, IT & business partnerships, and external partnerships as the five key principles in achieving world-class IT performance. Peter will explain the way in which compa-nies leverage these principles. He will provide examples of companies that operate at a high level for each, and the journeys they have gone through in order to achieve these heights. He will speak to the people, processes, tools, and metrics used relative to each principle. $15 per member and $30 per guest by April 26th at noon. $25 per member and $40 per guest for late reservations.

Let the Great World Spin |by Colum McCannMonday, May 17th, noon. It’s August of 1974 and Watergate and the Vietnam War make the world feel precarious. A stunned hush pauses the cacophonous universe of New York City as a man on a cable walks

between World Trade Center towers. This extraordinary, real-life feat by French funambulist Philippe Petit becomes the touchstone for stories that briefly submerge you in ten varied and intense lives--a street priest, heroin-addicted hookers, mothers mourning sons lost in war, young artists, a Park Avenue judge. All their lives are ordinary and unforgettable, overlapping at the edges, occasionally converging. And when they coalesce in the final pages, the moment hums with such grace that its memory might tighten your throat weeks later. You might find yourself paused, considering the universe of lives one city contains in any slice of time, each of us a singular world, sometimes passing close enough to touch or collide, to birth a new generation or kill it, sending out ripples, leaving residue, an imprint, mark-ing each other, our city, the very air--compassionately or callously, unable to see all the damage we do or heal. And most of us stumbling, just trying not to trip, or step in something awful. But then someone does something extraordinary that lifts us up for a glimpse of something greater: the sordid grandeur of this whirling world.$44 plus tax and service charge per member and $49 plus tax and service charge per guest by May 10th at noon. $49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations. Be a James Bond ceo |Who should attend? Business executives and those who wish to travel safely

Tuesday, June 22nd, 7:00 p.m. Can a fictional character keep you safe while traveling overseas? We believe he can—if you develop what we call the “James Bond CEO” persona. Most executives do not plan the element of security when traveling to potentially dangerous countries. This presentation will help all executives who don’t normally travel with private security trans-form themselves into a “James Bond CEO.” Topics to be discussed include:

• What open source information will help you determine the level of dan-ger in each country to which you plan to travel?

• What are the top 10 most dangerous countries, and why you should use private security when traveling there for business.

• How to handle a medical emergency while on your trip. • How to protect your company’s proprietary information while traveling. • Understand how the bad guys operate. “To know your enemy you must

become your enemy.” --Sun Tzu. • What are the threats? Kidnapping, Suicide Bombers, Assassination,

Extremism, Random Violence, Medical Emergencies, and Hotel Bombs. • How do you detect Surveillance? What do you do if you detect Surveil-

lance? • Analysis and attack statistics on executives. Time, speed, and distance get-

ting out of an attack. Kent Moyer is founder and CEO of The World Protection Group, Inc. Based in Beverly Hills, CA, The World Protection Group has offices in New York, NY and Mexico City as well as representatives in 12 coun-tries/regions around the globe offering executive protection, estate security, threat management and a suite of risk management consulting services to clients including Fortune 100 companies, Forbes 400 families and premier entertainment organizations. Based Upon Availability Book signing |

Who should attend? Those who enjoy reading and those who enjoy learningwhat happens behind closed doors

Monday, June 28th, 7:00 p.m. Please join us for a captivating reading and Q&A followed by a book signing from trend journalist and au-thor Alix Strauss as she celebrates the release for her new novel, Based Upon Availability (Harper Collins). From the very first page, readers will be drawn into the lives of eight women, each who pass through Manhattan’s swanky Four Seasons Hotel. While offering sanctuary to some, solace to others, the hotel captures their darkest and twisted moments as they grapple with fam-ily, sex, power, love, and death.Trish, a gallery owner, obsesses over her best friend’s wedding and dramatic weight loss. Robin wants revenge after a lifetime of abuse at the hands of her older sister. Anne is single, lonely, and suffering from obsessive-com-pulsive disorder. Drug-addicted rock star Louise needs to dry out. South-erner-turned-wannabeManhattanite Franny is envious of her neighbors’ lives. Sheila wants to punish her boyfriend for returning to his wife. Ellen so desperately wants children, she’s willing to pretend to be pregnant. And Morgan, the hotel manager— haunted by the memory of her dead sister—is the thread that weaves these women’s lives together. In this an utterly original novel, Alix answers the question; ‘what happens behind closed doors’ while examining the walls we put up as we attempt intimacy, and inspecting the ruins when they’re knocked down. A media savvy social satirist, Alix strauss has been a featured lifestyle and trend writer on national morning and talk shows including ABC, CBS, CNN, and the Today show. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times, New York Post, Time Magazine, Marie Claire, Entertainment Weekly and Self, among others.$15 per member and $30 per guest by June 21st at noon. $25 per member and $40 per guest for late reservations. Dr. Nell Painter: How Many White Faces Are There? |Tuesday, June 1st, 7:00 p.m. Dr. Painter’s The History of White People presents a mind-expanding and myth-destroying exploration of notions of race — not merely skin color, but also a signal of power, prestige, and beauty to be withheld and granted selectively. Our story begins in Greek and Roman antiquity, before the invention of the concept of race, and goes through the nineteenth- and twentieth-century explosion of theories of the existence of several white races. Today, American whiteness continues to enlarge, as wit has over the course of two centuries. History and artist Nell Irvin Painter, a leading historian of the United States, is the Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, Princeton University. In addition to her earned doctorate in history from Harvard University, she has received honorary doctorates from Wesleyan, Dartmouth, SUNY-New Paltz, and Yale. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Nell Painter has also held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the American Antiguarian Society. EXERCISE FOR BONE HEALTH Exercise is an important component in osteoporosis prevention. Exercise can decrease bone loss, increase bone den-sity, and reduce the risk of fractures. The following are exercises that have been shown to increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis:

WEIGHT-BEARING EXERCISES (i.e. walking, jog-ging, dancing, hiking, stair climbing, and aerobic exercise) Weight-bearing exercises refer to activities where the weight of the body is transmitted through the bones, working against gravity. Your bones respond to this force by growing stronger.

RESISTANCE EXERCISES (i.e. exercising with weights or resistance bands) Resistance exercises generate muscle tension on the bones. This strength-ens the muscles and stimulates the bones to grow stronger.

POSTURAL EXERCISES Postural exercises help maintain proper body alignment and decrease harmful stress on the back. Stretching the muscles of the chest and strengthening the back muscles help promote good posture.

BALANCE EXERCISES Balance exercises help main-tain equilibrium and can reduce the risk of falling.
