Sacred Heart School Dunedin Manawa Tapu
Respect, Humanity, Justice, Truth In the Dominican Tradition
Term 3 Issue 3/3 - Monday 24th August 2015
Our Core Value Focus for Term 3 - HUMANITY Haere mai te whanau Our core value of Humanity has been a topic of discussion for us as we think about what this actually looks like in our school community. Ruma Kiwi children have included their thoughts in their visual artwork on display in their learning area. Their comments include: “Being friends with all the children and the big children, Being fair in games, Caring for people when they are sad and lonely, Letting others join in.” The children also appreciate the importance of humanity in the way we care for the created living world around us which was the reason for the cupcake sale which took place after Mass at Holy Name yesterday and at school at lunchtime today. Congratulations and thanks to Bella and her family and to all who helped to raise some funds for the Dunedin SPCA. Congratulations to all of the children who sang at Holy Name yesterday morning. Your beautiful singing attracted many comments and we are super proud of you all. This edition is something of a photographic record of some of our recent school happenings and I have also included some written contributions from Ruma Toroa. I will be away from school from Wednesday 2nd September until Tuesday 8th September. I am attending a Catholic Principals executive meeting in Wellington and then visiting my father in Westland to celebrate his 90th birthday. Enjoy your week. Paul Richardson
Happy Birthday Birthday greetings to Kora (5) and Alex (11) who are celebrating

Extract from Our Special Character Review Cultural Awareness - The School is open to the enrichment of diverse cultures
“Sacred Heart has one of the most diverse group of ethnicities in the Diocese. A symbol of its success is the way it celebrates and encourages them all to feel welcome and included while giving appropriate priority to Te Reo, Maori and Pasifika Culture.” Confirmed Report – 29th June 2015
*** Our Family Mass at Holy Name *** “On Sunday 23 August our school had School Mass. It was at Holy Name. When I got in it was packed with people . I waited until the Mass started, it was very peaceful . Then I waited and prayed until our first song. I got up
and sang – it was very prayerful right through the Mass. At the end we processed outside and got ready for our cupcake sale . We were raising money
for the SPCA and it was fun” Hannah (Ruma Toroa)
“On Sunday 23 August our school had a School Mass at Holy Name. When I went in it was PACKED with people . We started the Mass and it was a
beautiful sacrament time. There was a young woman getting baptised. After Mass our school sold delicate scrummy cupcakes . We even sold out! Also we
got lots of feedback.” Mariya (Ruma Toroa)
Humanity in Action as Bella and her classmates from Ruma Kiwa sell their attractive cupcakes and donate the proceeds to the Dunedin SPCA. Thanks to Bella’s Mum Diane, Mrs Bradshaw and our enterprising young “Kiwis.”
We are very grateful to the Alexander McMillan Trust for their generous grant enabling us to buy a great new selection of books for our school library. The first lot of new books has arrived much to the excitement of the children.

Last Day of Term 3
Sacred Heart is a School with a Dominican Charism This means that we follow the way of Saint Dominic.
Through his example we learn to be followers of Jesus. Our school values of Truth, Respect, Justice and Humanity also help us to live
a fully Christian life.
Being Dominican is to love to learn and always curious to know more.
Being prayerful. We sit quietly, mind and body still, so as to gather the peace of God within. Being just and fair to all. We never forget those who do not have the same rights as us. Being yourself – an
individual with your own gifts and talents. Being a protector of the environment and valuing all created things.
Being a veritas person, honest with ourselves and others. A veritas person is a compassionate person.
HUMANITY - REFLECTION
Respect “Do to others as you would have them
do to you.” Luke 6:31
Justice “Hear what the Lord asks of you, to live justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God”
Micah 6:8
Truth
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 14:6
Humanity
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control.
Galations 5:22
