Happy Epiphany! Question, how does one celebrate Epiphany?
Epiphany is the season of God’s light shining through darkness. And God’s
light shines through when we become the light of Christ in the world. So we
are God’s light. This means we have very basic things to do.
1) Follow Jesus.
2) Reproduce ourselves in the lives of those that don’t know Jesus. Only one
percent of all Christian churches show signs of actually reproducing
themselves, and we’re not one of that one percent. So how do we do this?
How do we live our lives as followers of Jesus?
Church planter expert Ed Stetzer has studied 324 churches that experienced
significant turn-arounds. These churches were near death, and yet came back
from the brink. What brought them back? Here is a summary of his book,
“Comeback Churches.”
1) Renewed faith in Jesus Christ and the church’s mission in the world. In other
words, these churches “re-discovered” the unique voice of Jesus that calls to
each and every disciple.
2) Renewed attitude of servanthood and discipleship, which Stetzer dubs, in a
marvelous phrase, “loving what is lesser.” What others need to hear, the
voice of Jesus, becomes more important to you than what you like or dislike.
3) Strategic Prayer efforts. For churches to comeback, they need to rediscover
the power of the spiritual, most specifically, the power of prayer.
A disciple-making community is a praying community.
Here is our challenge:
1) Will you hear the voice of Jesus calling you to let him in and then let him out?
2) Will you live a life of mission, not asking God to help you on your mission,
but asking God to help you join Jesus in his mission in the world?
The Christian life is not about you doing something for God;
it’s about you letting God doing something for, in, and through you.
3) Will you pray that the kingdom of God will come crashing down on you,
your family, and this church?
This is how we celebrate Epiphany, by being the light of Christ
to the world, and reproducing ourselves in the lives of oth-
ers.
Happy Epiphany! Share the Good News!

We started our January 2011 meeting with a very inspiring Bible Study on water, lead by
Pastor Dave. Water being a very precious thing to us, Baptism being the most important.
How does Baptism happen and what effect does it have on us. Discussion made us think
about the relationship of our daily use and Spiritual use of water in our lives. A very inter-
esting Study, we look forward to more in the future. Tasty soup was a welcome lunch on
this cold morning.
Year 2011 Kindred Sisters HOSTESS Chart is on Board in Café … Please sign accordingly.
LWR Health Kits … We will again do Health Kits, as they are desperately needed via
LWR. A Health Kit Box is in the Welcome Center for your donations.

We are starting a new series for the youth called “Get To Know Our Youth!” This
month we are highlighting BLAKE TRAYWICK. Blake is a senior at Westwood High
School. He has intentions of going to Texas A&M next fall majoring in biology and partici-
pating in the Navy Corps of Cadets. He plans on going into the Navy after college. Blake
has been attending Lord of Life since he was in 8th grade. He was the youth representa-
tive for the call committee when Lord of Life hired Pastor Dave. Blake’s favorite memo-
ries of Lord of Life are going to Sky Ranch and the lock-ins! Blake volunteers at SafePlace
and Garner State Park! In addition to going to school full time, Blake works at HEB 20 to
25 hours a week. Blake’s favorite place to go out to eat is Mesa Rosa. Next time you see
Blake, congratulate him on being a wonderful young man!!
The January service project for the middle and high school youth was to prepare birthday
bags for SafePlace. SafePlace is a shelter for women and children here in Austin. The rea-
son behind birthday bags was if a child had a birthday while they were staying at Safe-
Place then their mother or guardian could have a little birthday party for the child. Inside
each bag are a cake mix, frosting, paper plates, cups and napkins. There were also some
extra items in the bags including table clothes, banners, balloons and other similar
items. The youth and their family and friends donated enough birthday items to create 48
bags and two bags of “extras”. After the youth were done putting together the bags they
had a big birthday party! They had pizza, snacks and sodas. They played many games
including a cupcake eating contest without the use of hands – which our very own Made-
line Smith won!! We also played musical chairs in the dark with only a disco ball lighting
the room! The evening was a wonderful way to celebrate this service project!
The senior high youth are going to a hockey game at the Cedar Park Center on January
29th. It is the Texas Stars vs. Abbotsford Heat. Looks to be around 12 of our youth and
their friends will attend this event! Go Stars!!
Update on the Giving Tree: donations were as follows: to Hill Country Community Minis-
tries: 6 packs of diapers, 40 packs of socks and underwear, 4 bags of baby food and wipes, 6
-8 bottles of soap; to Hill Country Nazarene: $160 for their food shelf; and Gas Gift Cards
for Discretionary Fund: 4 gift cards for Shell. We also brought three fleece blankets and a
check for $187.50 from the Harvest Festival fleece blanket sale! Thank you all for your
kind donations!!!

The 2010 Advent Appeal is 100% funded! The Stewardship
Committee graciously thanks the congregation for their
generous gifts to the 2010 Advent Appeal. Because of your
gifts, our ministry will continue to see growth. You will soon be
seeing improvements to our facilities. The stucco on the
administration building and sanctuary will be repaired, the deck
stained and all the buildings painted. A new media computer
with an up-graded sound card and hand chimes for the youth to
play during worship will be purchased. The Stewardship
Committee thanks all members for the generous giving of
themselves, time, and possessions throughout 2010.
Do you enjoy the fun and fellowship of playing dominoes? A new group is forming that will meet monthly on
the third Tuesday of each month from 10:00-2:00 in the cafe beginning February 15th. All ages are welcome!
Please bring a sack lunch to enjoy while playing. For additional information, contact Brenda Searcy at
[email protected] or Nell Pennington at [email protected] for additional information.
I would like to extend a special THANK YOU! to all
those who have been so generous to me over the past
year, especially Pastor Dave for his many visits and
encouragement, the choir for their beautiful carol
singing at Christmas, and all those who have sent
cards and prayers my way.
Dorothy Hamilton
Thank you to all our LOL church family for your
prayers, loving care, and concern during my recent
illness. We appreciate the great food, calls, cards, and
holiday visits to take time and share your Christmas-
time with Harry and I. To Pastor Dave, who was with
us in the hospital, we are grateful for your visits, calls,
and daily prayers.
Barbara Dailey
The following two positions are available at LOL:
1. VISTA NEWSLETTER SUBMITTER - The VISTA Newsletter is a publication of the ELCA that we submit to. This
really now requires someone with a digital camera and more internet experience so that they can input pictures to the online
version. Submissions for the online version are accepted anytime. The paper copy of VISTA is now printed only 4x a year
so this will require your meeting a deadline for submission, which is the 5th of the month prior to the month of publication.
Printed issues for 2011 are for Mar; June; Sept.; & Dec. It was through a submission in VISTA that we were able to get our
beautiful stained glass windows. So this really is a very important position for our congregation.
Contact person is John Dellis: [email protected]
The position is available immediately. For details, contact Donna Estes.
2. CHILDREN'S BOOK BAGS - Donna Estes started this project 3 years ago and feels it is time to give someone else the
opportunity to do it, perhaps someone with small children! “I have a nice little tote I carry to church each week, filled with
goodies for each little bag and I generally straighten and fill these bags each Sunday morning prior to service. Not a hard
project & the children seem to really enjoy them.” Donna will continue doing this until a replacement can be found. Please
contact her for more details.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do each of these projects. I sincerely hope that each of you will prayerfully
consider taking on one of these most valuable projects for our congregation.”
Peace & Blessings ~ Donna Estes
