The smartest shoppers know that saving money is more than luck. When shopping for groceries, it’s about having a game plan and making smart decisions about what to put in your cart.

Ask for advice. Grocery stores, ethnic markets, dollar stores, retail supercenters, and wholesale clubs can offer good deals. Ask friends and family where they shop and find their best bargains!

Eat before you shop. Grocery shopping hungry can lead to impulse buying and unhealthy food choices.

Read the sales flyer. Sales flyers are usually released mid-week and can be found at the store’s entrance, in the newspaper, or on their website.

Use coupons – but only for items that you know you’ll use. If you don’t need an item right away, save the coupon and see if it goes on sale. For more on couponing, check out Save More at the Grocery Store.

Look up and down for savings. Stores often stock the priciest items at eye level. You can save big by looking at the upper and lower shelves too.

Check for store brands. Most stores offer their own brand of products that often cost less than name brands.

Grab from the back. Stores typically stock shelves from back to front, placing the newest items behind the older ones. Reach in the back for the freshest items especially in the produce, dairy, and meat aisles.

Ask for a rain check. If a sale item has run out, ask the store for a rain check. This allows you to pay the sale price after the item is restocked.

Join your store’s loyalty program. Most stores offer a free loyalty program. Get special offers and discounts that non-members do not.

Think outside the store. Farmers markets and farm stands can be great options for picking up fresh produce at a discount. Check the National Farmers Market Directory for locations near you (USDA, n.d).

EAT: Tips for Communication at

Family Meals

Consider these tips to help family members make communication at family meals a positive experience:

Clear the table and turn off distractions, such as the TV or phones, so you can focus on visiting together.

Ask questions that encourage conversation, such as “What was the most interesting thing that happened to you today?” or “What should we do for our family vacation?”

Try to encourage conversation among family members but set a reasonable time for being together, such as 30 to 40 minutes.

Keep the conversation positive. Avoid making the dinner table a time for lectures, angry discussions or discipline of a child.

Allow every person a chance to talk and share thoughts or stories so that all have a positive experience.

Bring up an occasional conversation starter, such as a current event or a favorite joke or story.

Encourage family members to linger for conversation, with dessert or snacks, so everyone can relax and enjoy talking with each other (Garden-Robinson & Brotherson, 2016).

2 cups frozen vegetables (broccoli, carrots, corn, mixed vegetables, peas) 2 cups cooked chicken (shredded or cut up) 3/4 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions 1 Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 2 minutes. 2 Add chicken broth. Heat to boiling. Stir in rice and frozen vegetables. 3 Reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 10 minutes. 4 Add chicken and cheese. Stir constantly until chicken is heated through and cheese is melted.

Tips Use leftover chicken or turkey. Or cook your favorite way (bake, boil, or grill). Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to four days.

Look for crisp, bright, undamaged foliage At home, water the plant when dry, discard

Ideally, direct sunlight should fall on the foliage for 1 or more hours each day.
