Remember the Face-Covering/Mask Requirements Now in Effect
As of May 1, 2020 individuals will be required to wear a face-covering or a mask when in a public place where they can’t maintain a six-foot social dis-tance. Face-coverings or a mask will be required in public indoor spaces, such as stores. This new requirement applies to all individuals over the age of two who are able to medically tolerate a face-covering or a mask. De La Salle Announces New Girls Softball Coach
De La Salle is proud to announce that Frankie (Francesca) Castagna has been chosen as the new head coach for the Meteors varsity girls softball pro-gram. Castagna, a member of De La Salle’s Class of 2012, had spent the last two seasons as an assistant softball coach at her alma mater. Last season, the Meteors finished with an overall record of 14-12 and won the Illinois High School Association’s Class 3A Evergreen Park Regional championship before falling in the Class 3A Nazareth Academy Sectional semifinals. In 2018, De La Salle won the IHSA Class 3A Lindblom Regional title before a loss in the Class 3A Lemont Sectional semifinals ended its season. As a student-athlete at De La Salle, Castagna was a four-year member of the girls basketball and girls softball programs while also excelling in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society. As a senior, she garnered All-Girls Catholic Athletic Conference accolades in both softball and basketball. During her playing career at De La Salle, Castagna was a four-year varsity performer in softball and a two-year varsity athlete in basketball. She then attended and graduated from Lewis University in 2016, tying the Flyers’ single-game record for RBI with seven during her senior season. “I am very grateful to be able to come back to my alma mater and coach the game that I love,” Castagna said. “I am extremely excited to be given the op-portunity to be the varsity softball head coach. “It’s an amazing opportunity that I have been given to continue to grow the game and to pass along my experiences and knowledge to these young women.” #WeAreD.
Skin Cancer Awareness Month Reminder: Obtain Vitamin D Safely
Through Diet and Vitamin Supplements
The Skin Cancer Foundation Cautions Against Unprotected Sun Exposure Vitamin D is essential for strong bones and a healthy immune system. While a limited amount of the vitamin can be obtained from exposure to the sun’s ul-traviolet (UV) radiation, the suggestion that the best way to obtain vitamin D is through sun exposure is both misleading and dangerous. The health risks of UV exposure — including skin cancer — are serious and well-documented. While many people have found their time outdoors severely limited because of COVID-19, some may misguidedly forgo sun protection completely in an effort to obtain vitamin D. Instead of damaging your skin, The Skin Cancer Founda-tion suggests you get your vitamin D from sources like oily fish, fortified dairy products and cereals, and supplements. “Too many people believe that exposure to the sun’s radiation is the optimal way to obtain vitamin D, and that using sunscreen leads to vitamin D defi-ciency,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Founda-tion. “In reality, unprotected UV exposure can put people at risk for potentially life-threatening skin cancer, and it isn’t the most effective way to reach your vitamin D quotient.” Humans can produce only a limited amount of vitamin D from UV radiation. For Caucasians, that limit is reached after just five to 10 minutes of midday sun exposure. After reaching the limit, further exposure will not increase the amount of vitamin D in the body. Rather, it has the opposite effect: the vitamin D stored in the body begins to break down, leading to lower vitamin D levels. Spending time in the sun (whether outside or beside a window) in an attempt to achieve higher vitamin D levels can have serious consequences for the skin, however. About 86 percent of melanomas (the most dangerous of the three most common skin cancers) and 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are asso-ciated with exposure to UV radiation. To lower your risk of developing skin cancer, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended sunscreen use as part of a complete sun protection routine, including seeking shade and cov-ering up with clothing. Since some types of UV rays can penetrate window glass, this should hold true even on days you do not venture outside. Studies have shown that regular use of an SPF 15 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen reduces your chances of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 per-cent, melanoma by 50 percent and premature skin aging by 24 percent. Researchers have never found that everyday sunscreen use leads to vitamin D insufficiency. It’s more than possible to maintain healthy vitamin D levels while incorporating sunscreen and other sun protection into your daily routine. Vitamin D can be obtained with far safer and more effective options, including oily fish (like salmon, fresh tuna, trout and sardines) and cod liver oil, as well as from fortified orange juice and milk, yogurts, and some cereals. Supplements are also readily available and inexpensive.

Alderman’s Corner I hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy. I know this has been a difficult time for everyone. I want to thank all of our Essential Work-ers for all they are doing. From all of our doctors and nurses, First Responders, to restaurant workers, to Streets & Sanitation and Water Management work-ers, construction workers
and all who are helping us live somewhat normal lives, your commitment is truly appreciated. The Stay At Home Order from Governor Pritzker was extended through May. In addition, the Gover-nor also put in place requirements to wear a mask starting last Friday, May 1st. Listed below are sce-narios when a mask is required: • Face-covering or mask when in a public place where they can't maintain a six-foot social distance. • It applies to anyone over the age of 2 who are able to medically tolerate a face-covering or a mask. • When entering any place of business, such as a grocery store. • Required when picking up food from the drive thru or curbside pickup. • While visiting your health care provider. • Traveling on public transportation. • Interacting with customers, clients, or cowork-ers at essential businesses. • Performing essential services for state and local government agencies, such as laboratory testing, where close interactions with other people are un-avoidable • When feeling sick, coughing, or sneezing, though in this case, you should just stay home. • Those who are staying at home and have no close contacts that are infected with COVID-19 do not need a mask while at home. Other situations that don't require a mask include running or walking in your neighborhood; mowing the lawn, spring clean-ing, and gardening; driveway car washing; and other activities on your own property. We will be distributing free masks to 11th Ward residents only, TOMORROW, May 7th from 5pm-7pm. Distribution will be drive up only and take place in White Sox Lot B, located at 34th and Shields. The only way to access this lot will be from Shields. There will be a limit of 2 masks per person. If you are a senior and are unable to pick up a mask please call the Ward office and we will work to ac-commodate you.
Two weeks ago, we initiated a vote for the new playground equipment at McInerney Park located at 4446 S Emerald Avenue. I would like to thank all who were able to participate. Based on the feedback we received Option #1 seemed to be the favorite, please see Option #1 above. According to the Chicago Park District initial construction has been delayed due to the Coronavirus but is still slated to begin this year. Once begun the project should take 90 to 120 days to complete. We also recently posted information regarding renovations to Bosley Park. Normally we would have held a community meeting to obtain resident’s input, but because of the Stay In Place Order, we will be conducting this entire process online. Congressman Lipinski Introduces MASKS ON Act to Promote Public Awareness of PPE Benefits and Slow the Spread of the Novel Coronavirus
Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) Friday introduced the “MASKS ON Act,” Making Americans Savvy and Knowledgeable Safeguarding Ourselves from the Novel Coronavirus Act (H.R. 6653). The legislation directs the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to carry out a national public outreach and awareness campaign on the uses and benefits of personal protective equipment, or PPE, in minimizing the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. “People in Illinois and around the country are attempting to make the best decisions to protect their health and the health of their families and neighbors. The amount of the information and misinformation about how to best defend against this virus has left many feeling frustrated and overwhelmed,” said Con-gressman Lipinski. “The American people should have clear guidance on the benefits, uses, and limitations of masks and other forms of PPE in preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This legislation would help provide the public with information they need about the proper use of masks, the need to continue to main-tain physical distance from others, and what masks can and cannot prevent.” The bill requires the CDC to develop materials and publicly share information, including which types of PPE provide protection, proper techniques to put on, wear, and remove PPE, and the limitations of PPE
in providing protection. The CDC may coordinate with other federal agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and state or local public health departments as appropriate. Congressman Lipinski has worked directly with the bi-partisan House Prob-lem Solvers Caucus in developing a “back-to-work” plan that sets out clear benchmarks for re-opening the American economy. Among the key provisions are requirements that health workers, K-12 students and educators, and other
workplaces have sufficient supplies of PPE to help fight the continued spread of the novel coronavirus. New Executive Order provisions went into effect May 1st requiring Illinois residents over age two to put on face masks when going out in public, but many still lack the necessary information on the proper use of masks as well as their benefits and limitations. The MASKS ON Act would seek to remedy this problem and give clear guidance to the American public.

3/4 cup chopped onion
3/4 cup shredded carrots 3/4
cup diced celery
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
flakes
1-3/4 pounds (about 4 cups)
cubed peeled potatoes
3 cups chicken broth
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 package (16 ounces)
Velveeta process cheese,
cubed
1-1/2 cups whole milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup sour cream
Directions: 1. In a large saucepan
over medium heat, cook
and crumble beef until no
longer pink; drain and set
aside. In same saucepan,
melt 1 tablespoon butter
over medium heat. Saute
onion, carrots, celery, basil
and parsley until tender,
about 10 minutes. Add po-
tatoes, beef and broth; bring
to a boil. Reduce heat; sim-
mer, covered, until potatoes
are tender, 10-12 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, in a small
skillet, melt remaining but-
ter. Add flour; cook and stir
until bubbly, 3-5 minutes.
Add to soup; bring to a boil.
Cook and stir 2 minutes.
Reduce heat to low. Stir in
cheese, milk, salt and pep-
per; cook until cheese
melts. Remove from heat;
blend in sour cream. Yield:
8 servings (2-1/4 quarts).

Daley-Thompson Service Office Announces New Bosley Park
Improvements
Alderman Thompson has allocated approximately $1.3 million of TIF funds for the improvements at Bosley Park. The proposed new layout includes a new artificial turf soccer field, playground, paving, and spray pool features. Alderman Thompson was planning to host a com-munity meeting this month to discuss the renovation of Bosley Park. However, due to the Governor’s “Stay- At- Home” order, the decision was made to host the meeting virtually in order to keep the proj-ect on schedule. As Alderman Thompson has done with our other park projects, he is encouraging input from neighbors, especially those that will use the park.
