This happens to reflect my heart as I describe my journey as a priest especially during my time here in Mary Queen.It may sound naive and seem like I have no idea about what is happening but it actually brings me back from the veryfirst day I heard the call to the priesthood. And if you ask, when was that, my answer is in the quote of Dag - I don'tremember. I just know and I am certain to my yes. And that made all the difference and opened the doors to God'sgraces and surprises.
As a new priest, I was thrilled to know that I would be assigned as a parochial vicar here at Mary Queen. I have noclue what is going to happen but I know that I will be happy. My encounters with people enfleshed what I learned inseminary. Listening to the stories of the people, the joyful aspirations, the frustrations and disappointments, and allthat is in between made me realize that as a priest, it is very important to listen. Most of the time, people are notlooking for answers, they just need somebody to listen to them especially from a representative of Christ. As Ihopefully brought Christ to them, I saw Christ in them too. And for that, I am really thankful. The priest is not hisown, he is always for the people and ultimately for God. For the many experiences that I had here, starting from theoffering of the Holy Mass and celebrating the sacraments, to the group sharings, up to the small conversations I hadwith you, I am deeply grateful.
I also want to thank our Pastor, Fr. Dan for the many things that he taught me. They say that a priest will always havea special affinity with the bishop who ordained him. I would like to further that by saying that a priest will alwayshave a special memory of the first pastor who taught him how a priest should be. I am immensely thankful to Fr. Danfor being a great mentor and adviser.
To all of you, thank you most sincerely in making my stay in this beautiful community a memorable one. For thefriendship, generosity, kindness and affection you have extended, I cannot ask for more. As I continue my journey,know that you will always be a part of the story of my life.

Thank You Mary Queen (continued from page 1)I still remember how my late grandmother used to light candles every time there was a thunderstorm, a typhoon, or alightning. The candles did not drive away the storm. But, as we gazed upon the flickering light of the candle, we werereminded of the Lord's unwavering protection. As I leave Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish Community, pleaselet my poor and humble remembrance of you during my prayerful moments with Him be like the candle of mygrandmother. You may not be spared from storms, but, I hope that somehow the assurance of my prayers will keepyour faith alive even in the midst of a storm.
I always tremble before the love that calls me to lead people to the Lord, yet, my poor sinful self also finds joy in Himwho is our loving Shepherd. I entrust you to the loving protection of our patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Shecomes to us, as I have experienced many times. May she bring Jesus to us. May she take you to Jesus and accompanyus especially when we are in dire need.
For all that has been, thank you! For all that will be, yes!

Augustian Father Bob Dueweke forwarded an interesting article from EarthBeat, a newsletter of the NationalCatholic Reporter, to members of the diocesan Laudato Si Commission. The article focused on comments by Daniel DiLeo,an assistant theology professor at Creighton University and director of its justice and peace studies program, at the annualSchemmel theology lecture at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa.

*****Father Dan and several members of the MQ Care of Creation Commission have joined Interconnected, a 21-Day
Catholic Environmental Justice Challenge, walking with other Catholics to learn, pray, and take action for environmentaljustice.
In his encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis invites all people to act on behalf of creation. This call to action isgrounded in the principle of integral ecology—the idea that environmental, social, political, and economic systems areinterwoven—and sustained by a sense of wonder before the interconnected nature of all life. The environmental justicemovement similarly asks us to view the world as interconnected and prophetically calls us to change the systems that createthe unjust distribution of environmental hazards.
For 21 days, participants will:• enter into the complex work of understanding the connections between environmental injustices that
disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), as well as low income communities;• listen to and learn from the voices of environmental justice leaders from frontline communities;• better understand the connections between current and historical environmental injustices;• respond to the call to work towards a lived vision of a world in which all of God’s creation can flourish.

Laudato Si’ Week, sponsored by Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and facilitated by theGlobal Catholic Climate Movement, will be held May 16-24. The week will be the crowning event of the Special LaudatoSi’ Anniversary Year, and a celebration of the great progress the whole Church has made on its journey to ecologicalconversion. *******Closer to home, the Mary Queen Community Garden is off to a great start. A blessing celebration is planned for
Sun., May 16 between the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Masses. The celebration will be proclaimed in English and Spanish and willinclude music as well as Scripture readings. People are encouraged to wear green and/or white. The Care of Creationcommission hopes everyone will join together for this celebration.
The garden committee has planted peas, lettuce, kale, radish, onion, beets and beans. After the threat of frost is past,they plan to plant tomato and pepper plants they have received as a donation. The Hispanic community has requestedcilantro and cucumbers. The commission has applied for a grant from the city that encourages home and communitygardens. Because of its grant’s popularity, MQ has been included on a waiting list. There have been changes concerningthe pollinator garden because of the landscaping project. We’ll keep you up-to-date on the progress.

BUILDOur Justice Ministry had a very busy month! At ShilohBaptist on April 20, BUILD hosted a Rally and MockFuneral procession to show that we want to violence tostop. There were prayers and speakers who have lost lovedones to gun violence and then 100+ cars with signs againstviolence followed 10 hearses from 6 funeral homes andthe coroner's van, ushered by the Sheriff's Dept all aroundtown. It was a very powerful testament to the pain inflictedon the families and community by the rising number ofshootings and homicides. This was leading up to theNehemiah Action where we asked Mayor Gorton tocontract with the National Network for Safe Communities,the national experts on gun violence.
The Nehemiah Action is a large assembly of people offaith powerfully together, calling public officials to takeaction on serious community problems. After a busymonth of meetings with officials, getting theircommitments to attend the Action and answering anyquestions about what they would be asked, they gatheredat MQHR for our 16th Nehemiah Action on Tuesday, April27. The Action this year was a hybrid of a virtual Zoomwith 880 households watching and 220 cars at the drive inoption.
The issues addressed were:� Healthy at Home. BUILD has worked on
affordable housing for several years and keepshearing about the lack of affordable housing inLexington. We heard from mental health careproviders that housing is critical for those
suffering from a serious mental illness. BishopStowe was there to tell about this lack andimportance for more affordable housing as well.To address this dire need BUILD asked CouncilMember Brown to “Propose to the city council toallocate $20 Million of American Rescue Planfunds to the Affordable Housing Fund this year?”and to “Work with BUILD to identify a dedicatedrevenue stream that could generate $10Million/year?” Listening to his concerns about notyet knowing about the restriction of the ARPfunds he agreed to propose to the city council$10M to the AHF this year and he will work withBUILD to find a dedicated funding source goingforward! Council Member Ellinger was also inattendance.
� Youth/Education - Kids belong in school. BUILDis concerned about the harsher discipline thatchildren of color receive in the FCPS and weasked for a full implementation of theSaferSanerSchools program from theInternational Institute for Restorative Practices.Interim Superintendent Dr. Marlene Helm wasthere and was asked, “Will you contract with theInternational Institute for Restorative Practices byJune to begin the process of full-scaleimplementation of the SaferSanerSchools modelin no less than six pilot schools?” She agreed to dothis in 5 pilot schools, 2 grade, 2 middle and 1high schools in the same feeder system. Then sheagreed to meet with BUILD quarterly as long asshe is in this role to share current discipline dataand update us on the implementation. Board ofEducation members Murphy, Morris and Greenwere there and supported contracting with theIIRP to implement full fidelity toSaferSanerSchools.
� The Violence Must Stop! So far in 2021 therehave been 15 homicides, 5 alone in April! Wehave been asking the city to contract with theNational Network for Safe Communities (NNSC)since 2015 and the homicides keep rising. MayorGorton was asked. “Will you contract with theNational Network for Safe Communities toimplement a Group Violence Intervention (GVI)strategy?” She said no. When asked why shereplied that other cities are not finding it to reduceviolence and we responded that it must befollowed with fidelity, otherwise it doesn’t work.We want it followed with fidelity which is shownto be effective. She has a concern that the part onthe program that the city is not doing will beconsidered as racist as it focuses on the peoplemost likely to be involved in gun violence,
African American men. Pastor Owens replied thatnot addressing this population and letting them dieis racist as well. BUILD read a statement from thePresident of Lexington’s NAACP in support ofadopting the GVI strategy. Mayor Gorton said thatshe has meetings set up this week to meet withleaders such as the ACLU and NAACP to hearfrom them directly. We asked if she would invitethe NNSC to be a part of these meetings and sherefused. We are very disappointed that MayorGorton said NO and we will continue to press fora proven solution to the gun violence inLexington.

Recognizing Mary Queen’sDonut Ministry Volunteers As the coordinator of Mary Queen’s Donut Volunteerministry delivering unsold donuts from North LimeCoffee and Donuts/Clays Mill location to areacharities that feed the hungry, I would like torecognize those who give of their time and energy tokeep this program going, even through the Covidpandemic.
MQ began picking up donuts daily in Oct. 2016.Donuts are delivered to the Catholic Action Center,Salvation Army, Men’s & Women’s Hope Centers,Ronald McDonald House, Nicholasville HomelessShelter, Hope Lodge, Ballard Place, Emerson Center,Lighthouse Ministries, Fire stations, and a variety ofother charities. North Lime/Clays Mill estimates that93,617 donuts have been donated, valued at$135,750.
The volunteers who give so generously of their time(even on holidays) are: Kate Giuliani, Mary MargaretHarrison, Jim Hilvers, Mary Johns, David & AmyMattingly, Janice & John Mitchell (John is now inHeaven, as our intercessor), Lauren and DianeMonahan, Brenda Musgrave, Dave & DebbieSchnurr, Sue Sopala, John & Betsy Tibe, and Ernie &Maryanne Vasiloff. Angie Allen & family are back-ups and Fr. Dan has even helped out!
We offer our sincere gratitude to Sam Barr, managerof North Lime/Clays Mill, and the staff who tirelesslylabor to make this program possible. Thanks from thebottom of my heart for a job well-done.

Corned Beef SlidersCorned Beef Sliders are little sandwiches made from thinly sliced corned beef and homemade coleslaw. You can useyour own corned beef and slice it yourself or buy corned beef lunch meat.
Total Time: 10 minutesYield: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:• 1 (10-ounce) package coleslaw mix• 2 cups chopped green cabbage• 1/2 cup purchased coleslaw salad dressing• 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
Preparation:In large bowl, combine coleslaw mix (which has shredded cabbage and carrots), green cabbage, salad dressing,mayonnaise, and mustard and mix well.
Assemble sandwiches using the sliced corned beef, the coleslaw, and the sandwich buns. Serve immediately.
Prosciutto-wrapped Asparagus2-3 pounds asparagus1 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened1 pound thinly sliced prosciutto
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.2. Take a slice of prosciutto, smear cream cheese on it and then roll up a spear of asparagus in it, using enough creamcheese to "glue" the prosciutto to the asparagus.3. Spray cookie sheets (usually you'll need 2) with Pam and then line up the prosciutto-wrapped spears.4. Roast in the 450 degree oven for about 15 minutes.
Remove carefully to a serving dish with a spatula (so you get all the cream-cheesy goodness!).
Banana Pepper Casserole2 small jars banana pepper rings - drain and pick through pieces16 oz Colby/Monterey Jack shredded cheese5 eggs5 tablespoons milk
Lay peppers in bottom of sprayed 9x13 dish. Sprinkle half cheese over peppers. Mix eggs and milk, pour on top. Coverwith remaining cheese.
Bake 350 for 30 minutes. Cut into squares for appetizers!

para muchos el mes de nuestra madre celestial, la Virgen María. En varios lugares, el mes de mayo coincide con la primavera y existe la costumbre

parte de la oración en su casa, el mes
de mayo será muy oportuno para comenzar
el rezo del santo rosario en familia. Son varias las maneras en que podemos mostrar nuestra devoción a la Madre de Dios, y la mejor de ellas es de imitar las virtudes de María. No hubo perso-na más abierta y dispuesta a hacer la voluntad de Dios que María, ella misma le dijo al Arcángel Gabriel, “soy la esclava del Señor.” Tuvo el privilegio y la gran responsabilidad de ser la Madre de Jesucristo y también escogió ser su discípula, atenta a sus palabras.
Probablemente todos nosotros conocemos a personas de otras iglesias cristianas que “no creen en la Virgen María.” Es curiosa esta expresión, espe-cialmente cuando la usan miembros de iglesias que se llaman bíblicas, porque
cia en el Nuevo Testamento. No son solamente los cristianos quienes saben
musulmanes la respetan y la veneran. María aparece más frecuentemente en el Koran, libro sagrado de los musul-manes, que su Hijo Jesucristo. Para los musulmanes, la madre de un profeta es
especial y venerada. Algunos que dicen que no creen en María quieren decir que no debemos rezar a María porque ella no es Dios. Podemos mostrarles en el evangelio de San Juan como María se hizo intercesora por la pareja y sus familias en la Boda de Canaán cuando se acabó el vino durante la celebra-ción. Aunque Jesús dijo que no era su
tiempo (para manifestar su identidad como Hijo de Dios), María supo que él iba a responder a sus necesidades e instruyo a los meseros, “haz lo que les diga”. María tiene el mismo consejo para nosotros. Cuando pedimos su intercesión en nuestras oraciones, María siempre nos orienta hacia Jesús y nos enseña a obedecerlo.
El rezo del Santo Rosario nos da una oportunidad de no solamente repetir oraciones conocidas como el Padrenues-tro y el Avemaría, sino que nos invita a meditar en los misterios de nuestra re-dención. Pensando en la vida de María, y como ella participo íntimamente en la vida de su Hijo, meditamos en los even-tos gozosos, dolorosos y gloriosos en su vida. Los misterios gozosos se enfocan principalmente en la encarnación del Hijo de Dios: su nacimiento y su niñez. Los misterios dolorosos recuerdan como María sufría viendo la pasión y muerte de su Hijo. Los misterios gloriosos nos hablan del premio de la vida eterna ganado por la resurrección de Jesucristo y la participación en cuerpo y alma de María en la vida de la resurrección antes que nosotros.
San Juan Pablo II introdujo otros
cinco misterios al Santo Rosario que se enfocan en la Vida de Jesús y los discí-pulos. Se llaman los misterios lumino-sos porque nos iluminan con la luz de la fe. Todos los misterios son eventos que
de los 20 misterios se encuentra en la Biblia. Dos son parte de la tradición an-tigua de la Iglesia: la asunción de María cuerpo y alma al cielo y su coronación como Reina del Cielo y la Tierra.
La devoción mariana del Papa Francis-co es bien conocida. En cada país que visita, él quiere visitar los santuarios marianos- como Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en México, La Aparecida en Brasil, La Inmaculada Concepción en los Estados Unidos. Antes de salir en cada viaje e inmediatamente en su retorno, el papa visita la Imagen de la Patrona de Roma, que se llama “La Salud del Pueblo Romano”. Su devoción favorita viene de su tierra natal, La Virgen del Rosario de Lujan, Patrona de Argentina. Además,

La Universidad de Notre Dame tiene un convenio con la Diócesis de Lexing-ton. Antes de la pandemia, realizamos talleres presen-ciales, hemos apoyado a más de 200 estudiantes en sus cursos en línea, cursos que continúan, y en junio
diócesis visitaron nuestro campus para un taller de dos días con profesores de la universidad y miembros de nuestra congregación.
Dios mediante, este no será el último grupo en visitar Notre Dame, estoy segura que su diócesis continuará apoyando líderes que a pesar de sus compromisos familiares, horarios de trabajo, responsabilidades en sus ministerios, y en medio de una pandemia, continúan dedicando 6 o 7
semanas en cursos que les permiten conocer y profundizar su fe.

El mes de mayo es el mes de la madre, de las mamás, de las mamitas, de las mamacitas, de las abuelitas, de las bis-

en cualquiera de sus representaciones. Me viene
a la mente la Virgen de Guadalupe y la Virgen de Fátima a las cuales les tengo una devoción especial. Sin embargo, si ustedes tienen una devoción por alguna otra representación de María es maravilloso e importante seguirla.
El Papa Francisco tiene una devoción especial por la Virgen María también, y nos invita este mes de mayo a rezar y a orar durante todo el mes, tipo maratón, para que Dios nos haga el milagro de que se acabe la pandemia del coronavirus.

y la Coronación de la Santísima Virgen. Así que unámonos este mes de mayo a rezar por todos. Somos un solo corazón, el corazón de Dios.
En este mes de mayo, también podemos hacer devociones a nuestra madre Santísi-ma, la Virgen María para pedirle pureza en los niños y niñas, al igual que en los jóve-nes, pues se ha acostumbrado hacer esto.
Aprovechemos y pidamos también por la salud y bienestar de las mamitas que nos
también ya estando en el rezo.En muchas de nuestras casas y hogares
se ha acostumbrado honrar de modo más fervoroso a la Virgen Santísima,
-res ante su imagen, meditan y rezan ofreciéndole su corazón. Si en su casa no lo hacen, este mes de mayo, sería una gran oportunidad para hacerlo.
Recordemos que la Madre de Dios puede intervenir por nosotros ante Dios nuestro Señor como buena madre que es, siempre atendiendo a sus hijos. Es Dios el que hace milagros. Sin embargo, que Hijo bueno no escucha a su madre. Jesús es el Hijo de Dios y es también Dios al mismo tiempo. Jesús es igualmente el Hijo de la Santísima Virgen María, así que cuando ella le pide por nosotros él escucha sin duda. Así nuestra Virgencita es el camino al corazón de Dios junto con Jesús.
Este mes tan lindo por estas razones, es una oportunidad para seguir apegados a Dios o acercar-nos a él si no lo estamos. Que la fe, el amor, y la esperanza sigan creciendo día a día en nuestros corazones. Disfruten a sus mamis si están cerca, y si no las pueden ver por diferentes motivos, espero ten-
gan la oportunidad de rezar por su bien y hacerlas felices aun en la distancia.
