Location Aware AppsTell your story.

A location-aware app calledSoho Stories celebrating the personal and the cultural stories of London's Soho district.

Once the app knows where you are and after a genial greeting from Barry Cryer, who explains the app's mechanics -- it plays audio related to your immediate surroundings.

As you walk through the historic, and often sticky, streets of Soho, you'll be regaled with the wonderful tales of who used to work at which shop, or which phone box used to be particularly popular with heroin addicts.

All the important landmarks are included -- Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Foyles Bookshop, the Windmill Theatre, Carnaby Street -- alongside recollections of the past from locals likeFrankie Fraser(talking about criminal gangs) and Barry Miles(speaking on the beginning of teenage culture).

The histories, and poems, give a warts-and-all overview of the area -- including its infamous sex industry.

Each piece is something of a field recording, with the background noise of the street making getting a feel for the area easier.

As you walk around, the recordings fade in and out -- the sensation, if you're walking fast enough, is much more fluid than that of a stuffy museum audio tour.

These types of apps are a handy way to both provide an aural history for tourists and passers-by, and also a new way to preserve the oral histories of locals in areas where there are cultural treasures worth preserving.28
