EDITORIALThis month we are hoping for some assistance from you. We are very curious to know whether or not News & Views is fulfilling its remit; that is to convey Parish and Community information to you our readers. It is probably a dangerous strategy from our perspective because the result of this survey will decide the future of News & Views as we have come to know it.So if you would take five minutes to complete this survey ( see below) and either return it to the Parish Centre, or fill it out online at www.newbridgparish.ie we would be very grateful. We will also leave boxes at the Parish Church, Cill Mhuire and St. Eustace’s Dominican Church during the month for your convenience.

WHAT DOES THE ADVENT WREATH MEAN?
Usually, the Advent Wreath is made of four candles, three purple and one pink.
The candles remind us that Jesus is the light that has come into the world. (John 3:19) Four candles are used to represent the
four weeks of Advent. The colour purple is used because, long ago, purple dye was very expensive and purple became a colour
that was associated with royalty. Advent is the season of the coming of the King. The pink one is lit on the Third Sunday of
Advent, Gaudete Sunday, which means Joyful Sunday or the Sunday of Rejoicing. We rejoice because we are more than half
way through our preparation for Christmas. Long ago, Advent was a time of fasting, like Lent. On the Third Sunday, there
was a break from this fast and the priests wore rose or pink coloured vestments so that tradition became a part of the Advent
Wreath. As we light the candles each week, we are made aware of our journey through this season. Placing the candles in a
circle is symbolic of God’s love for us, a love that has no beginning or end. The use of the evergreen leaves around the
Candles reminds us that God’s love is everlasting.

Life for Newbridge man, Paddy Clarke has not always been easy. Living with dwarfism or restricted growth has often left him with feelings of rejection by a society which finds his condition either a cause for hilarity or curiosity. Paddy was born in Dublin but moved to Moore Park with his parents Patrick and Noreen and his sisters Liz and Noilin, when he was 9. Patrick snr worked for the Department of
Agriculture on the Curragh. Paddy’s childhood and schooldays were comparatively normal and happy. His parents, especially his mother, ensured that. Noreen Clarke died twenty years ago, Patrick had predeceased her by two and a half years. It wasn’t until she died that Paddy realised how hard life could be. “I never knew what a cross was like until she died” he states. Unhappy with his life, he gained weight and his already restricted mobility became even worse. That is why his meeting with Taekwondo coach Jason Salmon was such a life-changing event. The following is in Paddy’s own words. “One Wednesday evening, in February 2014, I was outside the Patrician Brother’s school when I met Jason Salmon for the first time. We chatted for a while and I explained to him about my lack of mobility and the effect it was having on my life – for example, the effort it was to walk. Jason invited me to attend his Taekwondo classes on Wednesday nights in Newbridge Town Football Club. The following Wednesday I attended my first class. At first my movements for upper and lower body (limbs) were rather slow. After
every class, Jason would give me physical home-exercises and as time progressed they increased, doubling or trebling accordingly. This actually resulted in my mobility being greatly improved to where many people in the class and outside commented on seeing a great difference in my lifestyle. Jason has put a lot of thought into making my movements successful, and as a result of his attention my mobility has considerably improved with the effect that every-day tasks like walking, climbing stairs and standing up after sitting down are becoming much easier for me. I also gained a new network of friends. As time progressed attending Jason’s classes and having practised Taekwondo at home I am delighted to announce that, on December 21st last, I achieved my first Grading Pattern (Yellow Belt). This was a momentous occasion for me. I now intend to continue my classes and to achieve the next Grading Pattern which is a Yellow Belt with Green Stripes. What Jason Salmon did for me is amazing. He put pep in my step and I will be forever grateful. Thank you for your outstanding loyalty Jason. It’s well appreciated, forever”.Jason’s classes take place in Newbridge Town FC. on Wednesday evenings from 7.45pm to 9.05pm.For further information on availability call 086)3741515.

For the second time in a year, Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig emerged victorious, following another titanic struggle with the Patrician Secondary School in the Basketball Ireland All-Ireland U19 “A” Semi-final. The reigning champions settled well with Darragh O’Sullivan helping them into a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, we had Mark Dempsey (capt.) in fine form too. But, the O’Sullivan brothers - Darragh & Conor put some light between the teams in the 2nd quarter to leave the score at 33-26 at half-time.Whatever coaches Joe O’Connor and Ms Nicola Clarke said, Patricians responded and led by scoring from Dempsey and Calum Sourke - we won the third quarter 19-14 and found ourselves just two behind 47-45 heading into the final eight minutes. We hit the front for the first time at 50-47 after Dempsey and Niall O’Connor pointed. However, the O’Sullivan’s – who scored 52 points between them – found second wind to push home their advantage and claim a flattering 68-54 victory.Patrician Scorers: Mark Dempsey 19; Callum Sourke 11; Stephen Crowley 8; Cillian de Barra 7; Niall O’Connor 7, Conor Smyth 2.

What is Adoration?Adoration is a form of Catholic meditation on the Eucharist, which is displayed in the tabernacle of the Adoration chapel. We believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist and he is inviting you to visit him today. We also believe that Jesus pours out a myriad of graces and blessings upon us when we keep him company in an hour of Adoration.A very Special InvitationImagine receiving a beautifully designed gold-edged invitation in the post, personally addressed to you. Now imagine opening it and seeing an invitation directly from our Lord Jesus Christ inviting you to meet him personally on a particular date at a specific time. How would you feel? I’m sure you would feel deeply touched that our Lord would take the time to send you such an invitation and deeply moved that He would want to meet you for some personal time with Him. It might even surprise you that Jesus is really alive among us at all.At the 4th National Pilgrimage of Eucharistic Adoration in Knock, April 2016, Bishop Kevin Doran invites us to, “Trust in Jesus; He is alive among us and it is His Spirit who sustains us in whatever we are called to be” Encountering the Real Presence of Jesus ChristWhen we take time to encounter the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the tabernacle in the Adoration chapel we open ourselves to a real living relationship with God the Father, through His son Jesus. Jesus is waiting to offer you peace and give you
real direction in your life. Here he is really and truly present, and He doesn’t mind how many mistakes you might have made, how seemingly off course your life has become, or the myriad of problems that take up the hours of your day – He would love to spend just one hour with you, and He will help you to resolve all the issues and troubles in your life. Grace and Strength for Daily livingIn a speech delivered from the Phoenix Park in 1979 that in hindsight seems almost prophetic, Pope John Paul II referenced the difficulties of the distractions of human life when he said‘Ireland, that has overcome so many difficult moments in her history, is being challenged in a new way today, for she is not immune from the influence of ideologies and trends which present-day civilisation and progress carry with them. The very capability of mass media to bring the whole world into your homes produces a new kind of confrontation with values and trends that up until now have been alien to Irish society.’Sometimes life can become very confusing, there are so many different ideologies and opinions out there that we can easily become distracted, lost, lonely even in the crowd and noise of life. But God loved us so much that he sent us His son so that Jesus would always be present and accessible to assist us in our daily lives.Pope John Paul II continued: ‘… It is from the Eucharist that all of us receive the grace and strength for daily living--to live real Christian lives, in the joy of knowing that God loves us, that
Christ died for us, and that the Holy Spirit lives in us’http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/pea/pjpdevot.html At a time when we are hungry for peace yet riddled by distraction, how can we not come to Jesus to receive the peace that we seek? At Baptism we are all confirmed individually as members of the Body of Christ. St. Paul says ‘Now you are the Body of Christ and individually members of it’ 1: Corinthians 12:27.That means that you and I are part of the global Christian Catholic community that makes up the Church. Each hour spent in meditation with the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist is like a precious pebble in a pond, rippling outward to extend the peace of Christ to all we encounter in our daily lives. Jesus is inviting you to Him to be the peace you want to see in the world.Adoration Chapel opening Hours:Our Parish is blessed to have the Adoration chapel open as follows:Monday – Sunday: 10am – 10pmFirst Fridays: 10am – 12midnightFirst Saturdays: 7.30 am – 10pm.If you feel Jesus is calling you to visit Him in the Adoration chapel and you would like to attend a regular hour of Adoration on a weekly basis, please contact:Anne: 087 2361708Noel: 085 864 5047We would love to hear from you.

Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel. (ONE)The organisation of National Ex- Servicemen was formed in 1951 from an amalgam of a number of Veterans Organisations coming out of the War of Independence and the Second World War. The Official name of the organisation is Óglaigh Náisiunta na hÉireann in Irish. Membership is open to those who served in various state uniformed organisations including the Defence Forces, the Red Cross and the Civil Defence. In the winter of 1988/89 a number of ex-servicemen were found dead on the streets of Dublin. As a result of these deaths ten members of the ONE raised a mortgage of €1million and built a twenty- room bedroom home for ex-service personnel in Queen Street Dublin. The ethos of the organisation now changed from a comrades’ organisation to a support organisation for ex-service personnel in need. Óglaigh Násiunta na hÉireann is a company limited by guarantee which seeks to ensure the welfare of ex-servicemen and women by way of providing accommodation to homeless, elderly or disabled members in need of such domestic accommodation and shelter and other assistance that may be required. The patron of ONE is Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland. On 23 November 2016 President Higgins visited 0NE’s homeless shelter Brú na bhFiann (Home of the Brave) in Smithfield, Dublin. The President took time out from his busy schedule to visit those
who have given many years’ service to Ireland and its Defence Forces and for one reason or another now find themselves in need of shelter. In addressing the audience, the President said ‘I’m delighted as Patron of the Organisation of National Ex-service Personnel to have this opportunity to visit this wonderful facility and it’s appropriate to have these great services available to people who served Ireland at home and abroad.’Prior to leaving Brú na bhFiann President Higgins met with representatives of the Board of Directors and was presented with a specially commissioned medallion by National President, Michael Carroll. Michael, who lives in Newbridge, served for 33 years in the Defence Forces based at
the Curragh Camp and is a member of St Conleth’s Branch of the ONE. Michael led the ONE contingent in the historic Easter Parade in 2016 having previously marched in the 50th anniversary parade with the Defence Forces in 1966. Prior to becoming National President, Michael served in many positions in the local branch including Chairman. He also held the position of Leinster Area Council President and Chairman for a number of years and was a member of the Board of Directors from 2010 to 2016. The St Conleth’s Branch meet on the first Monday of every month in the old A&Q School in the Curragh Camp and new members are always welcome. Bishop Denis Nulty, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin has launched a new setting of the Mass by Newbridge composer Padraig Meredith. The Mass was launched in Saint Conleth’s Parish Church, Newbridge on Sunday 26 February at the 12.30pm Mass. Padraig Meredith is a composer from Newbridge, who specialises in liturgical music. His new setting of the Mass is entitled Mass of the People and was performed for the first time by ‘In Caelo’ under the baton of Cora Coffey, Musical Director. The Mass of the People includes new settings of the pieces sung/spoken at every Mass – the Kyrie, the Gloria, the Gospel Acclamation, the Holy Holy, the Memorial Acclamation, the Doxology & Great Amen, and the Lamb of God. The Mass will also feature two additional pieces by Padraig including the first performance by the Fox sisters of a new psalm entitled In God Alone and the Communion hymn Our Blessing Cup performed by soloist Teresa Lynch.Speaking at Sunday’s Mass, Bishop Nulty said, “Music is a central element of our Catholic worship. In fact it is an integral element of most faiths. We give thanks and praise to God through our music and it reveals the truths of our faith.“Instrumental music can express both our human emotions before God and God’s healing presence to us in a way that no other medium can. There is nothing to equal the oboe, the harp and the flute during
an offertory procession. There is equally nothing more beautiful than to hear a choir like ‘In Caelo’ who have been rehearsing these new Mass parts composed by Padraig for weeks. “I think it’s great to have a new Mass setting. Music selections need to serve and enhance our prayer and Padraig’s new melodies do just that. I thank Padraig, Cora and all in ‘In Caelo’ for their prayerful expression today of the Mass of the People.”Commenting on how he came to write the new Mass setting, Padraig said, “The Mass came about through my long association with ‘In Caelo’ choir and Musical Director Cora Coffey. I have written many Church pieces, but I never had the kind of response from performers which I receive every time I bring ‘In Caelo’ a new piece. I wanted to thank the choir for their support over the years by composing a special piece for them, but that didn’t seem enough so I decided to compose an entire Mass setting for them. The setting is called Mass of the People because it is a gift not just for ‘In Caelo’, but for all the parishioners of Newbridge.

BISHOP DENIS NULTY LAUNCHES NEW SETTING OF THE MASSBY NEWBRIDGE COMPOSER PADRAIG MEREDITH
MASS OF THE PEOPLE WAS PERFORMED FOR THE FIRST TIME BY LOCAL CHOIR ‘IN CAELO’ UNDER THEBATON OF CORA COFFEY
P a d r a i g went on to say, “I have worked in Newbridge Parish for the past t w e n t y -four years, first as an altar server, then as a junior sacr is tan, as a helper
on the annual Lourdes pilgrimage, and as a choir member singing with the tenors in ‘In Caelo’. I went on to play piano for ‘In Caelo’ and eventually turned to composing for them.“I have proudly represented Newbridge Parish at four World Youth Days in Toronto, Cologne, Sydney, and Madrid. Outside of our diocese I have also represented our parish at the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin in 2012 as a pianist and member of the chamber choir, and I also composed the official anthem for the Dublin Archdiocese Year of Evangelisation.” Padraig went on to share some of the spirit of his local parish, saying, “Newbridge parish has a spirit which is unlike another parish. I love liturgy, all types of liturgy, from the joy of a Christmas Eve or Easter Saturday liturgy, to the sombre and muted mood of Good Friday. Whether it is a joyful or a sombre occasion Newbridge parish is able to achieve in communicating a warm, peaceful, calm, and reflective mood. Our parish church is a place of welcome, light, warmth, and heart. My Mass setting tries to capture the various moods of the Church calendar. Each
piece has a separate character which matches the tone of that moment in the liturgy where it is placed. The Mass setting tried to achieve a goal of being inclusive for all the congregation by (hopefully) being ‘singable’ by everyone. Hopefully the congregation will leave the liturgy happy and humming!”Speaking about the launch of the new Mass, Father Paul Dempsey, Parish Priest of Saint Conleth’s Parish, Newbridge, said, “Sunday, 26 February marked a significant day in our parish diary as we launched Padraig’s Mass of the People. Down through the years Padraig has been most generous in giving of his time to enhance the liturgy in the parish through his musical talent. He is a very gifted musician and we are extremely fortunate to be able to draw on this giftedness in Saint Conleth’s. As the Church faces many challenges in a changed and changing culture, many people drift along as many familiar anchors in society have disappeared. As a Church we must respond by inviting people to participate in the liturgy - a liturgy that is vibrant, joyful and well prepared, a liturgy that will touch people’s hearts and help them experience the deep love of Jesus Christ. Good music is critical to this and contributes to the Eucharist being the ‘summit and source’ of the Church’s life. Through his new Mass setting, Mass of the People, Padraig is making a major contribution to the life of the Church in Ireland today. I wish him every blessing and thank him for sharing his gifts so generously with us here in Saint Conleth’s Parish.”With Musical Director of ‘In Caelo’, Cora Coffey, the ensemble for the launch Mass included Pádraig Meredith on piano, Caroline Sutton on violin, Derek Duffy on guitar, and Mary Farrell on Irish Harp.

In the year 1820 Fr. Pierre Bienvenu Noailles, a priest of the diocese of Bordeaux, founded the Association of the Holy Family of Bordeaux. Many people will be aware that there are four ‘vocations’ or sections in the Association – Contemplative and Apostolic Sisters, Priests and Laity. His vision, however, also included a section referred to as a ‘Secular Vocation’ for women. Together they form the Spiritual Family of Pierre Bienvenu Noailles.Consecrated Secularity is a call from God to consecrate your life to Him, to commit your life freely to the Lord by having a great love of Him. Secular members abandon nothing externally but transform everything from within. They provide for themselves. They remain in the world and live their lives as they have always done. The exception is that they take the vows of Chastity, Poverty, and Obedience. They live with their family, keep their own profession and possessions, and maintain their relationships, while at the same time living for Christ and for love of him.The Secular Vocation is open to single women – either unmarried or widowed – who wish to be part of the Holy Family Association. The lower age limit is 25 years. It is for women who have decided that neither religious nor married life is for them, but who still want to live a meaningful and committed Christian life. There is no higher age limit, but the person entering must be flexible enough to change her lifestyle to a certain degree, to travel and to take part in occasional meetings. Members of the Secular Institute make three vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. These vows are public in the sense that they are recognised by the Church, but private in the sense that they are not made, for example, at a public Mass. They are also lived in a very different way from the way the Sisters live them. Members of the Secular Institute live in their own homes, support themselves financially and make provision for their future. They contribute to a general fund and pay for meeting expenses such as travel, accommodation, etc. They make their vow of obedience in accordance with their Constitutions and live their vow of chastity as single women.Their vocation is to promote and witness to Christian values quietly without being any different outwardly from anyone else. Members of the Secular Institute have a great advantage of belonging to a group and having the support of others. Although they make vows for one year only, they are perpetually renewable.
Our style of life permits us to be present to others and to respond freely to all types of needs in different contexts: the family, the office, school, hospital, the young and the aged – wherever there is someone to be loved and helped. Evangelical commitment, i.e. the taking of vows in a secular institute demands discretion. It is referred to by some as the hidden vocation. The essential characteristic of a secular vocation is the act of consecration, but a consecration lived in the world. The Holy Family Secular Institute is international. Its members are present in Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chad, Congo, France, Italy, India, Great Britain, Paraguay, Peru, Ireland, Spain, South Africa and Sri Lanka.ReflectionWhen we allow God to take the initiative, our lives can become a living witness of God’s love, enabling us to become even more effective sowers of hope, sharing that love with others, enabling it to flourish wherever it is sown.

Question: My wife and I are applying for the Family Income Supplement (FIS) for our family of two children. We are unsure about what income is included in the means test for this payment. For example, will my wife’s student grant be included?
AnswerFamily Income Supplement (FIS) is a weekly tax-free payment for families, including one-parent families, at work on low pay. The combined income of a couple (married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting) is taken into account when your means are assessed for FIS. Income from any source, including a student grant, is assessed in the means test. However, the following payments are not counted as family income:•Child Benefit or any income your children may have•Guardian’s payments •Supplementary Welfare Allowance•Domiciliary Care Allowance •Foster Child Allowance•Rent Allowance for tenants affected by the de-control of rents •Income from a charitable organisation
•Income from providing accommodation to students studying Irish in Gaeltacht areas Capital is not assessed. This includes property you own, bank accounts and cars. However, bank accounts may be checked for other income sources and income derived from the use of a car that you own may be assessed (for example as a taxi). The main items counted as income are a couple’s assessable earnings, any extra earned in employment (such as pay for overtime, bonuses, allowances or commission), income from self-employment, occupational pensions, social welfare payments (apart from those listed above), income from carer’s payments or rental income from the letting of property or land.

When a spouse/partner is unfaithful is it the end of the marriage/relationship?
When a spouse/partner is unfaithful it may seem like the end of the marriage/relationship is inevitable, but this does not have to be the case.
When an affair is discovered or comes to light it is a huge trauma for the spouse/ partner who was unaware of its existence. It can also be a traumatic experience for the partner having the affair. In some circumstances the disclosure or discovery of an affair can be a relief to the partner involved. One of the first challenges for any couple in the immediate term is to try to re- establish some sense of equilibrium, a way of being together in a calm and measured way both for themselves and their children.
The expertise of a marriage/relationship counsellor can be vital in the aftermath of an affair. The counsellor can help the couple to re-establish a safe environment which enables them both to express their feelings and needs, and listen to each other. The role of the counsellor is not to give advice or to direct the couple to a particular solution, but to help the couple to examine the nature of the difficulties they have as a couple, explore all of the choices available to them and to help them to reach a resolution that is acceptable to both.
If you are encountering problems in your relationship or if you would like to explore unresolved relationship issues, and would like to speak to a marriage and relationship counsellor, please contact ACCORD Newbridge at [email protected] or 045 431695 to arrange an appointment.

Patrick a man well- tuned into the Irish landscape picked a clover plant to introduce the Irish to a truly Sacramental Christianity. A Christianity springing from belief in the original blessing of Creation.
A belief in the creative love and energy of the Creator, the Christ and the Life-Giving Spirit, emerging from the depths, sustaining, enlivening and embracing every living thing.
Our beautiful humble Shamrock is also a farmer’s secret weapon. Inclusion of white clover in grassland increases productivity, profitability while substantially lowering greenhouse gas emissions from pasture-based dairy production.
Did you know Red Clover is packed with valuable nutrients including calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, vitamin C and isoflavones? The isoflavones may significantly reduce hot flashes in menopausal women and help us all keep stronger bones.
Somewhat confusing is what a Shamrock is? Trifolium dubium (lesser clover, Irish: seamair bhuí) or Trifolium repens (white clover, Irish: seamair bhán) while yet others pretenders are known to masquerade as Shamrocks.
