Week 6 ELA 8: Attributive Tag Practice You will need to use the notes from the “Attributive Tags PowerPoint” to help you complete the following exercises. *Answer key is at the end*

Part 1 Directions: For each essay excerpt below, underline OR highlight the attributive tag used.

1) The most shocking information I found in my research is how highly addictive sugar really is. In Sullum’s

article from Forbes magazine, he states, “Even though we associate significant health hazards in taking drugs

like cocaine and morphine, high sugar/high fat foods may even present more of a danger because of their

accessibility and affordability” (Sullum).

2) Sugar has been proven to relieve stress. Researchers at UC Davis found that eating sugar shuts down the

release of the stress hormone cortisol, meaning sugar soothes us when we are stressed (Praderio). So many

people live high-stress lifestyles that it is obvious to see why readily available sugar would be comforting to

many.

3) In Lisa Zerbe’s article in Prevention magazine, she discusses how in rat studies, addicted rats experienced

chattering teeth, tremors, and anxiety when sugar was taken away (Zerbe). After researching, I decided I would

try to give up sugar for 10 days. I thought that it would have an effect on my lifestyle, making me feel happier

and healthier.

4) People claim that the only way for children to gain full emotional and behavioral skills is to be raised by both

a mother and a father. When a topic such as this one has a broad amount of variables it is impossible to simply

link these problems to only having one parent. In the article, “Single-parent families cause juvenile crime”,

author Robert L. Maginnis states, “Children from single-parent families are more likely to have behavior

problems because they tend to lack economic security and adequate time with parents”.

Answer key: Answers may vary, but here are some possible ones.

For PAGE 6: Exercise: Create an appropriate signal phrase to fill in the blank for each item. All necessary

information is provided below each item.

1. In the article “How Young Is Too Young to Go to School?” Sara Carr states, in France,“Half of

the country’s 96 mainland “departments”—geographic regions akin to counties or school districts—have reached the goal of enrolling 30 percent of 2-year-olds from the priority networks.”

2. Sarh Carr, in the same article, also claims that “In the United States, by contrast, the percentage of

2-year-olds enrolled in educationally focused preschool programs is negligible, and about a third of American 3-year-olds attend such programs (nearly 100 percent of French 3-year-olds do)” (“How Young Is Too Young to Go to School?”).

3. An expert in the field argues that, “there’s no reason that, with a modest amount of additional

resources, collaboration, and commitment, we couldn’t create more programs for our toddlers akin to those that are slowly proliferating across France”(Carr).

4. In the article “Pre-K: Decades Worth Of Studies, One Strong Message”, Claudio Sanchez points out, “ Kids who attend public preschool programs are better prepared for kindergarten than kids who

don't.” “Pre-K: Decades Worth Of Studies, One Strong Message” | Claudio Sanchez | nprEd

For PAGE 7: Exercise: For each item, select material from the provided text(above)to fill in the blank and

complete the citation. Choose enough material to finish the sentence. Use only as much of the blank space as needed.

1. Moyer, a science-based parenting columnist, cites studies on animal sleep which show that “Animals deprived of sleep during infancy, for instance, wind up with smaller cerebral cortices as adults.”

2. Moyer understands the appeal of the message being repeated online in the articles. She acknowledges

that “there’s an alluring message here for exhausted parents: that your suffering may ultimately produce a superior child, and since this is all seemingly beyond your control, you should surrender and go with the flow—never mind how little sleep you get.”
