P K E E N E L A N D CONT. PFresh off the Presses... If Dr. Philip McCarthy was in the mood to spendyesterday at Keeneland, it’s certainly understandable. The morning after he and his partner Fred Hertrich soldHelsinki (GB) for $3.9 million and her weanling daughterby Unbridled’s Song for $1.15 million, McCarthy signedthe winning ticket at $200,000 for hip 1072. Con-signed by Knockgriffin Farm (Jim FitzGerald), agent, thebay filly is a daughter of El Prado (Ire)--Smooth Swinger(by Kris S.). She is a full sister to Senor Swinger, win-ner in his most recent appearance of the GII BelmontBreeders’ Cup H. “She was a lovely filly, wasn’t she,”said McCarthy. “She’s a full sister to a nice horse. Wethought she was worthwhile and you never know. She’s got a lovely pedigree, it’s a pedigree full of run-ners and we want to try to accumulate fillies and mareslike that.” The Mar. 31 foal will be taken to McCarthyand Hertrich’s Watercress Farm near Paris, Kentucky, where she will be raised and eventually raced by theduo. Asked how he was feeling the day after Wednes-day’s fireworks, McCarthy simply said, “Relieved,”adding, “[Helsinki] was a lovely mare, beautiful pedi-gree, lovely foal...we just got lucky and that’s whathappens in the horse business. She’s a rare gem, thepeople that bought her are fortunate to have her. But,the way I look at it is that we can’t operate at that endof the market. The values are just too great for us.”McCarthy indicated that serious consideration wasgiven to holding on to the foal, but that despite theobvious appeal of the filly, a decision in the best inter-ests of the farm needed to be made. “We really don’tfeel there’s going to be another opportunity to be in-volved in that family,” he explained. “Most of the fam-ily is owned by Sheikh Mohammed and now the mare, and I don’t think there will be many opportunities to getback into that family. We feel blessed that things wentour way, but we really couldn’t afford to keep a marelike that, and the same thing goes for the filly. It’s thehighest price for a weanling sold this year and that’spretty good business.”

School of Hard Knocks... A colt by Mr. Greeley, deemed by one bloodstockagent as “Little Secretariat” because of his chestnutcolor and four white socks, attracted a final bid of$440,000, topping the session’s weanling offerings.Foaled, raised and consigned by Knockgriffin Farm (JimFitzGerald), the Mar. 12 foal was produced by the 21-year-old mare Hard Knocker (Raja Baba) and wasknocked down to Eldon Farm Equine of Keswick, Vir-ginia. Debbie Easter, representing the farm, waspleased with the purchase. “He was just a gorgeouscolt and he looks like a runner,” she commented.“You’ve got to like the pedigree. It was as good asanything else that was in here [Thursday].” The colt is athree-parts sibling to Chimichurri, one of the best repre-sentatives from the first crop of Elusive Quality, whowon the GIII Tempted S. at two and was second in theGI Prioress S. at three. He is also a half brother toHuambo (Green Dancer), a Listed stakes winner inGermany. FitzGerald, who bred the aforementionedChimichurri, was equally high on the colt, which he co-bred with the Manganaro family. “He’s just one ofthose picture perfect horses,” he said. “He had a big, beautiful athletic walk. He was the real deal. There’sreal pleasure in raising a horse like that because theydon’t come around that often, so you appreciate whenthey do.” FitzGerald indicated that Hard Knocker islikely to be bred to Mr. Greeley again in 2005.

As Clear as Day... Peter O’Callaghan, acting on behalf of a pinhookingpartnership, went to $330,000 for hip 1218, the sec-ond top priced weanling of the afternoon. The bay colt, consigned by Hidden Brook, agent, is a son of Dayclear(A.P. Indy), herself a daughter of Nine Keys (FortyNiner), winner of the GI Apple Blossom H. “He was avery nice colt and a very good horse for this day,”commented Sergio de Sousa, manager of Hidden BrookFarm. “There was a lot of interest in him and everythingworked out. A client of mine from Brazil, Mr. Anderson, bought the mare carrying [this foal]...we’re going to gofor a little samba tonight.” Dayclear was purchased for$140,000 at last year’s November sale. She has anunraced two-year-old of this year by Out of Place and iscurrently in foal to Lemon Drop Kid. De Sousa expecteda good performance from his colt, but perhaps not thisgood. “We felt that he’d make 200 [thousand], but Ididn’t know he was going to make 330,” he said. “Hewas a nice horse and sometimes you get lucky.”

Middle of the Road... Overall, the November Sale continued to carve outmarked increases, while yesterday’s fourth sessionended with only a modest rise. “I think this was kind ofa readjustment day,” explained Geoff Russell. “I thinkthe RNA rate went up more than anticipated [yester-day]. [Thursday] was a slight blip on the radar. Themiddle market is the strength of this sale. What wewere missing today was very simple--Jess Jacksonwasn’t sitting in that corner. They bought 89 horses forthe first three days and didn’t buy any today. He’s hada major influence on the sale.

EVEN THE SCORE TO MILLENNIUM Multiplegraded stakes winner Even the Score (Unbridled’s

Song--Ashtabula, by Rahy) has beenretired from racing and will enter studnext season at Millennium Farms Ken-tucky. The six-year-old will stand fora fee of $8,500 live foal. The firstfoal from stakes winner Ashtabula,Even the Score ran second in the GIIExplosive Bid H. at four, but blos-somed when sent to trainer VladimirCerin for his 2004 campaign. Thegrey tallied victories in the GII MervynLeRoy H. and the GII Californian S.before finishing a close third in theJuly 10 GI Hollywood Gold Cup,which would be his final start. He

compiled a record of 29-9-1-9 and earnings of$751,629, tops among all sons of Unbridled’s Song.“Even the Score had the talent and quality we havecome to expect from the Unbridled’s Songs,” saidWilliam Hardin, manager of Millennium Farms. “He hasbeen a stakes performer four consecutive years, andthis year he was a formidable in the handicap ranks onthe West Coast. He has shown his versatility by run-ning well on the turf as the dirt. There is immenseinterest for Unbridled’s Song and his sons, and webelieve Even the Score will prove extremely popular atthis fee.”

ROCK HARD TEN TO MANDELLA Rock Hard Ten(Kris S.), winner of the GII Swaps Breeders’ Cup S. andrunner up behind Smarty Jones in the GI Preakness S.,has been moved from the barn of Jason Orman and willjoin Richard Mandella’s string in Southern California.
