H A R B O R H A P P E N I N G S
Lake Greenwood, South Carolina June 2012
W ith Memorial Weekend behind us it is officially the start of summer and it’s going to be a busy one.
I want to thank all members for supporting our events and activities at the Club. We have had several successful events in the past few months, most recently the Salute to Our Armed Forces Ceremony and Dinner, which would not have happened without your enthusiasm and support. I am pleased that so many of you were able to come to the Clubhouse on May 23
rd to welcome our new Director of Hospitality and Member Services, Jill
Causey. We are delighted that Jill has joined our team and your feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Please be patient as Jill transitions into her new role, but know that you can call on her at any time to assist you. As the Cabana is now open, I want to remind everyone that it is especially important that you have a membership card and your guest has a guest card. Your guests will not be able to charge anything to your account if they do not have a guest card. If you need a membership card, please notify Tommy Thomas or Jill Causey and one will be made for you. Guest cards are available at the business office and at the golf shop. In closing, I wanted to notify you about a new Challenge Golf Group company-wide policy that will be implemented at all our Clubs. Effective June 1st, 2012, a standard 18% gratuity will now be added to all food and beverage checks. If your experience at the Club motivates you to a higher level of generosity, while not necessary, you may feel free to do so at your discretion. Through preparation and hard work we are determined to make it our best summer yet at Grand Harbor!

Our first Military Appreciation Day event at Grand Harbor took place on Saturday, May 21st. This fantastic event gave us an opportunity to say thank you to those that served in the military.
It was a heartwarming experience and the Fort provided a great setting for this ceremony.
D ishing with JILL CAUSEY Did you grow up in the south? I am originally from Summerville, SC born and raised. My mother’s side of the family is from Summerville, and my parents met when my father was stationed in Charleston in the Navy. I have never had a desire to live anywhere but the South. I love its charm, its beauty and history. What do you think is the biggest misconception about the South? That there are better places to live other than the South! Tell us something interesting about your childhood? Living on the Coast, I was almost always at the Beach. We spent our summers on Seabrook and Edisto Island. My favorite part was the house
on Seabrook, where you could walk out the back and almost always catch your dinner right from the dock. How would you describe your personality? I am very happy, almost always smiling and always look for the positive side to any situation. What was your first impression of Grand Harbor? The drive into the area is breathtaking. I am used to the majestic Oak trees and Marshland, so I was pleasantly surprised as I drove through the rolling highways and sparkling Lake views into the upstate. The property itself is gorgeous and everyone I met the first day I came to Grand Harbor was so friendly, it felt like home. There is an incredible sense of community here.
Your job title is Director of Hospitality and Member Services, what does that entail? To ensure the highest quality of dining and event experiences for our members and guests, through new events, service staff training and working closely with Tommy and Chef Calvin. What are you doing when you’re not at Grand Harbor? As you might imagine, I love to entertain. My children’s birthday parties are one of my favorite events to plan. My birthdays as a child are a great memory for me and it is also a great excuse to jump in a jump castle after the age of 10! I also perform wedding ceremonies. I have performed close to 30. Recently, a bride and groom I married had their first child exactly one year from their wedding date. I am also a runner, so I feel best when I run 3-4 times a week. Running in the upstate is very different from running in the Low Country!

some great costumes as you can see
from the photos. The format was a better ball of
partners on the front 9 and a Captain’s Choice
on the back 9. The scores were outstanding
this year due to some great weather and perfect
golf course conditions. The overall champions
were Jill Criscuoli and Cheryl Hague with a 61,
which was 1 shot better than Bev Gevicke and
Pam Kurtz who shot a 62.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
The Folds of Honor Foundation is rallying a nation to ensure no family is left behind in the fight to
preserve American freedom. Through scholarships and other assistance, we give back to the
spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country. We provide healing,
hope and an opportunity for dreams to be realized...with the support of people like you. We feel
this is our duty as citizens of the greatest country in the world.
OUR CALLING
Over 700,000 soldiers have been killed or disabled in the military operations in Iraq and
Afghanistan--Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. These service
members' families exceed the national average of 2.5 dependents per household. As of January
1, 2012, over one million dependents have been adversely affected by multiple deployments to
Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 87% of the dependents affected by the recent wars do not
qualify for federal scholarship assistance. While the federal government provides some support
for these families, it cannot succeed alone without proactive civilian organizations to assist.
The need is great, and, to paraphrase the words of Patrick Henry, their battle is ours. As
Americans, we feel a collective duty to honor those who have sacrificed by serving the families
they leave behind.
Mike O’Shea Day kicks off our summer long fundraising event for this great cause.
On the day of the event we will be placing a wooden box made by Rich Adams at the golf
shop so people can contribute to this great charity. The box will remain in the posting
room until the Patriot Golf Day event in September.
Let’s set the bar sky-high in our first year!
