American Snow Confer-ence in Charlotte

KANSAS CITY, MO —Three recipients havebeen selected to receivethe American PublicWorks Association (APWA)2013 Excellence in Snowand Ice Control Award.Established to promoteexcellence in the manage-ment and administrationof public works snow andice operations, the Excel-lence in Snow and IceControl award also pro-motes the best practicesin snow and ice removal, while minimizing environ-mental impacts. Thisyear, the Excellence inSnow and Ice ControlAwards will be presentedat the 2013 APWA NorthAmerican Snow Confer-ence, April 7-10, 2013 inCharlotte, NC.

The three recipients forthis year’s APWA Excel-lence in Snow and IceControl Award are:

• Ohio Department ofTransportation: The OhioDepartment of Trans-

portation (DOT) winterprogram effectively ad-dresses the need for snowand ice removal on43,000 lane miles ofhighways, with 1,600plow trucks, 3,000 em-ployees and 650,000 tonsof salt stored at 200 loca-tions around the state. Each winter, ODOT usesbetween 300,000 and900,000 tons of salt —with a yearly average us-age of about 600,000tons. Snow and ice con-trol can comprise 40-45percent of the annual op-erating expense, with ap-proximately $50 millionannually attributed to la-bor, equipment and ma-terials. Each of 88 coun-ties, with support from12 districts and the cen-tral office, plans and pre-pares for the approachingwinter season. Their planincludes equipmentreadiness, truck routing, call out procedures, sup-plemental drivers, emer-gency equipment rental, training and material in-ventory control.

• City of Green Bay, WI.

Department of PublicWorks: The City of GreenBay Department of PublicWorks operates out of twofacilities for its snow andice control program. Thewest side facility consistsof offices, snow commandoperations, brine produc-tion room, fleet mainte-nance garage, parkinggarages and parts stockroom. The east side facil-ity consists of offices, fleet maintenance garage, sewer section, electricalsection and a 500 ton saltstorage shed. In additionto a tarped salt storage atthe west side facility, thecity purchased and in-stalled a Brine Extremebrine making system thathas two 6000 gallon saltbrine storage tanks, one6000 gallon storage tankfor calcium chloride andone 6000 gallon storagetank for Geo Melt. Thissystem allows the city tomanufacture 6000 gal-lons of brine per hourand enables the depart-ment to blend differentmaterials on demand.Along with a new brine

production room, with in-stalled four new 37 wattLED light fixtures, em-ployees have been onboard with the new direc-tions for the program, which has had a betterresult on the roadways.

• City of Novi, MI. De-partment of Public Ser-vices: The City of Novi De-partment of Public Ser-vices (Novi DPS) has awinter maintenance pro-gram that includes sever-al materials to effectivelyrespond to the Michiganwinter storms. The mate-rials include rock salt, liquid brine (manufac-tured onsite), de-sugaredbeet extract, and mineralwell brine. These materi-als are stored and han-dled in accordance withState of Michigan’s rulesfor salt and liquid brinestorage, in that these ma-terials may be covered, stored on impervious sur-faces and monitored rou-tinely for potential pollu-tion risks. Novi DPSstores rock salt inside acovered salt dome thathas a shingled roof, con-crete floor and concrete

walls. The large dome hasa capacity of approxi-mately 2000 tons of salt, and the loading area ofthe salt dome is coveredto prevent erosion of thesalt pile, reducing thetrack out material andexposure to stormwaterrunoff. GIS services areused to create detailedmaps and booklets thatassist operators withsnow clearing, and multi-ple mapping layers areincorporated into the pro-gram allowing DPS to ef-fectively plan work, trackcosts and identify servicedeficiencies.

The Excellence in Snowand Ice Control Awardwas established to pro-mote excellence in themanagement and admin-istration of public workssnow and ice operations, and to promote the bestpractices in snow and iceremoval while minimizing

WEST FARGO, ND — Grouser Prod-ucts introduces the new V3 FlexPlane, the manufacturer’s latest in a series ofheavy duty, contractor grade attach-ments. Grouser’s patent pending V3

FlexPlane is designed to attach to anymake and model of skid steer, making itthe universal tool for any landscapingjob. The attachment’s user friendly andhigh productivity design enhances ver-satility and appeals to a variety of endusers including construction and land-scape contractors, golf course superin-tendents, municipalities and ruralhomeowners.

Featuring a unique pivoting action, theheavy duty V3 FlexPlane features a versa-tile self-adjusting blade that rotates tocontour to the ground, continually ad-justing for uneven ground and providingmaximum efficiency in any terrain. Thecontouring action prevents floating emp-ty and conversely eliminates the issue ofcorners digging into high spots in theplaning surface. Forget about attackingan uneven contour from all different an-gles — just let the V3 FlexPlane do all ofthe work the first time. If the applicationdoesn’t require the advanced mechanicsof the V3 FlexPlane’s pivoting action, it

can simply be locked in place and usedas a standard, rigid plane.

Designed for high productivity, the V3FlexPlane features two double beveledhardened cutting edges. The cuttingedges provide both aggressive cuttingaction and smooth leveling in both for-ward and reverse directions. A specialCross Crumbler Beam knocks eventough earth into manageable dirt, en-abling the V3 FlexPlane to tackle themost challenging terrain. Large, station-ary rear side plates allow the attach-ment to move more dirt than other mod-els, while self-correcting springs en-hance ease of operation.

Featuring a universal quick attachdesign, compatible with any skid steer, and Grouser’s exclusive Accu-Tach sys-tem, the V3 FlexPlane can be custom fit-ted to the end user’s machine in min-utes. Accu-Tach allows the V3 Flex-plane to be adjusted to the ideal cuttingangle for any tracked or wheeled skidloader, regardless of horsepower or tiresize, increasing cutting ability andboosting productivity. Built with heavyduty, contractor grade materials andcomponents, the V3 FlexPlane is de-signed for low maintenance and longproduct life. Minimal wear componentsensure greater uptime and fewer main-tenance requirements. The cuttingedges are constructed of hardened steelfor durability and longevity. The V3FlexPlane also features an open viewdesign. This eliminates blind spots andpermits full view of the work surface,

preventing damage to the attachmentand equipment, as well as increasingoperator safety.

The V3 FlexPlane is offered in fivemodels of varying length. Available sizesare 72, 78, 84, 89 and 96-inch.

ork began recently on a project inCarlisle, PA that includes the develop-ment of three commercial lots, one ofwhich is will be home to a new medicalcare facility. The Wenger Developmentsite plan as it’s called, specifies vehicle

access to all three lots plus two new entrances into anadjacent parking area of the Carlisle Brethren inChrist Church, located on one side of the property.Sandwiched between the church and an existing his-torical home, the Two Mile House, owned by theCumberland County Historical Society, the new con-struction includes a 350-foot extension of an existingroadway from across the main roadway that culmi-

nates in a cul-de-sac. The project also includes a sig-nalized intersection, and a turn lane for entrance intothe new section of road.

After East Coast Green, had completed theirerosion control work, crews began relocating the gasand water utilities once the land had been cleared. The 7.6 acre project got under way in late Februaryafter an existing house and associated woodlandswere razed to make way for the new lots. “We had agrinder come in and grind all the wood waste that wecreated by clearing the land,” said Jeff McCoy, sitesuperintendant for John W. Gleim, Jr., Inc.Excavating, site preparation contractor for thisproject. The ground wood will be used as mulch for

the landscaping when the project is completed.Additionally, a portable crusher was used to crushmuch of the limestone rock that was excavated dur-ing early site prep work. “We weren’t able to use all ofit because there was too much clay mixed in with therock,” said McCoy. “But the cleaner material we hadground into sub base stone that we will be using tobuild the access road for the site.”

McCoy noted that the silt sock, a mulch filled filtersock that had been installed in place of the morefamiliar silt fencing material, would be a real pluswhen it came time to do the landscaping. “All we willneed to do is slit the fabric and the straw that hasbeen inside the sock for the time of the project, willfall out onto the ground and can be used formulching the areas that will be seeded during land-scaping.”

At the time of our visit, Gleim’s crew was busytrenching rocky ground as part of the gas utility relo-cation that needs to take place before construction ofthe medical facility takes place. “There were existinggas and water lines coming in from this road in frontof the property, so we need to relocate them so thatwe can safely service all three of the lots that willultimately have buildings on them,” he said. “Weneeded to use an excavator with a pneumatic ham-mer to break the rock because township ordinanceswould not allow us to do any blasting on this site. That makes the trenching go a little slower, but weshould have this done in another week or so, weath-er permitting.”

McCoy explained that while the water and sewerlines needed to be repositioned on the site, the sewersystem upgrades would not hinder the progress of theconstruction because the sewer lines go out the back-side of the property to the street that adjoins theproperty to the rear. “Shane McConnell is workingback there with a dozer, making the water retentionswale that goes with this project,” he said. “We will beputting the sewer lines in back there when we are

finished with the water and gas lines.”“We will be creating a new entrance to these prop-

erties, which will actually be an extension of EastgateDrive across the way,” he said as he pointed to theexisting street that ends across Walnut Bottom Road, the road that fronts the new medical building. “Wewill be putting in a turning lane for entrance into theroad extension. It will end in a cul-de-sac beyond theentrances to the commercial lots and the churchproperty parking lots. We will also be closing theexisting exit from the church property once the newaccesses are complete. It will make coming and goingonto and off Walnut Bottom Road much easier. Thathas become a very busy roadway in recent years.”

The work is scheduled to be completed bymid-summer with the medical facility opening assoon as possible. With the addition of what will be thefifth traffic light on this roadway in a very shortdistance, it will take some time for traffic engineers tocoordinate the sequences of the lights so that trafficwill flow smoothly throughout the week.

Once the existing gas and municipal water lines are relocated, work on the new Eastgate Road inter-section in the distance, and the new roadway extension onto this property, will take place.

Shane McConnell cuts a drainage wale into therear portion of the property under development.

Gleim's onsite GPS system (L) gives the dozer operator pinpoint accuracy for working an area on the proj-ect into a drainage swale.

From the entrance to the new development, workers are busy finishing rerouting the gas line in preparation for the new street that will be placed in the open area to the right.

Whether you hardface old equipmentor new, when completed properly the re-sult is the same: less downtime for re-placing worn or broken components, fewer spare parts to inventory andlonger equipment life. In short, hardfac-ing is a fast, easy and efficient way tomake your equipment more wear resist-ant and keep it in the field longer — of-ten for less money.

During the hardfacing process, afiller metal (sometimes called an alloy)

is bonded to the equipment’s base met-al in order to obtain specific wear prop-erties and/or dimensions. Specifically, these filler metals provide abrasionand/or impact resistance. On olderequipment, hardfacing can returnworn parts to a nearly new conditionfor about 25 to 75 percent less thanthe cost of replacement parts. Hardfac-ing can also lengthen the life of sur-faced parts by up to 300 percent morethan non-surfaced parts, especially onnewer equipment.

To obtain the best results from your

hardfacing application, its important toconsider a few basic guidelines.

Technique and process requirements

First, determine your hardfacingneeds: buildup, overlay or a combina-tion of the two. The buildup technique

(placing layers of welds on top of eachother) returns older equipment back toits original dimensions after it has beenworn by impact and/or abrasion. Over-lay is the addition of a weld layer that

protects the equipment against metalloss. A combination of buildup/overlaycan also extend equipment life and maybe used repeatedly provided that thepart or equipment remains sound.

The size, shape and location of theequipment or parts that require hard-facing will determine which weldingprocess should be used, as will yourskill set and the availability of specif-ic equipment. Typically, hardfacinguses either stick (SMAW) or flux cored(FCAW) welding processes, but somecompanies that weld large, thick com-ponents on a regular basis maychoose the submerged arc welding(SAW) process.

Each welding process has advantagesand disadvantages. For example, stickwelding is a highly portable, making itideal for hardfacing in the field. Thereare also many types of stick electrodesavailable, each of which can be used inall welding positions and are able toweld on relatively thick materials. Stickelectrodes, however, have a low efficien-cy (due to stub loss), a relatively lowdeposition rate (approximately 1-7-pounds per hour) and may require sev-eral weld layers — FCAW often requiresminimal training to become adept. Un-like stick welding, flux cored welding islimited to flat and horizontal positions.

Base material considerationsConsider your equipment’s base mate-

rial. Carbon or low alloy steels are prob-ably the most commonly hardfaced ma-terials. As a word of caution, those ma-terial containing higher amounts of car-bon and/or alloy content tend to bemore brittle and may require pre orpostheat, or stress relieving to preventcracking. Thicker base materials require

similar heating considerations, as well.Austenitic manganese steels can also

be hardfaced, and these too can becomebrittle during the welding process. Un-like carbon or low alloy steels, austenitic manganese steels should notbe pre-heated unless the temperature ofthe part is less than 50 degrees Fahren-heit. During the hardfacing process, thebase metal temperature should remainunder 500 degrees Fahrenheit, as ex-ceeding this temperature barrier for anextended period of time increases thesteel’s brittleness. Austenitic man-ganese steels with higher carbon andlower manganese content acceleratethis time/temperature reaction.

Regardless of the base material youplan to hardface, remember to pre-cleanthe part prior to welding. First, wipe itfree of all contaminants, includinggrease, dirt, rust and oil. Then, if neces-sary, remove old hardfacing layers, as

well as cracks, via arc (or plasma) goug-ing or grinding.

Equipment wear factorsConsider the type of wear your equip-

ment encounters, as this will be a sig-nificant factor in determining the bestfiller metal to use. Abrasion accountsfor roughly 55 to 60 percent of equip-ment wear, and there are three maintypes: low stress scratching, high stressgrinding and gouging. Impact and adhe-sive wear (also called metal to metalwear) are also common. Secondarytypes of wear include high temperatureand corrosive wear.

The least severe form of abrasivewear, called low stress scratching, re-sults when the metal slowly wears awayfrom the scouring action of materialsacross the equipment. Hardfacing withcarbide or chrome carbide filler metalsbest protects against this type of wear, and often filler metal formulations areavailable to provide stress relievingcracks that prevent spalling.

For high stress grinding abrasion,

caused by repeated crushing and grind-ing of materials against the equipment, the best filler metals are those contain-ing austenitic manganese, martensiticirons or titanium carbides.

Filler metals containing high car-bide alloys and supported byaustenitic manganese are the bestchoice when encountering gougingabrasion, as these filler metals pro-vide good impact resistance. Gougingabrasion occurs when large objects, such as rock, press against the equip-ment and create grooves.

Impact wear often occurs on equip-ment like crusher rolls, impact hammersand impactor bars, and results from acompressive load placing high mechani-cal stress on the equipment. The bestprotection against this type of wear is touse an austenitic manganese steel (11 to20 percent Mn) filler metal, as it offersgood work hardening characteristics.

To protect against adhesive or metal

to metal wear, which occurs from thenon-lubricated friction of metal partsagainst one another, use a martensitichardfacing alloy. Austenitic manganeseor cobalt-based alloys also work butthey may be too soft to resist adhesivewear for as long of a period of time.

When equipment repeatedly encoun-ters high temperatures and rapidly coolsafterward, it can result in high tempera-ture wear, also called thermal fatigue orfire cracking, which leaves deep cracksin the equipment’s base material. Thistype of wear is usually secondary, or inaddition to the abrasion or impact wearequipment encounters. Generally, anon-ferrous alloy is best for protectingsteel surfaces subject to temperaturesabove 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. Forthose below this range, a filler metalcontaining chromium carbide or amartensitic steel filler metal with 5 to 12percent chromium is suitable.

Corrosive wear is also a secondarytype of wear that should be dealt withseparately. Most filler metals providesome rust protection, but its best toconsult your equipment manufactureror a trusted welding supply distributorfor recommendations.

Desired surface finishFinally, determine the type of surface

finish your equipment requires. Sincehardfacing filler metals range from easyto difficult to grind, determine your re-quired finish prior to choosing one. If asmooth surface is necessary, measurethe time and cost of grinding to achievethis surface versus using a filler metalthat has slightly less wear resistance, but provides a smooth finish. A fillermetal that can be heat treated to softenit for machining, and then brought backto the hardness necessary to protectyour equipment may also be an option.Or, if relief checks (small checks whichdo not weaken wear resistance) are anacceptable surface finish, consider a car-bide alloy designed to be crack sensitive.

Final thoughtsIf your equipment encounters repeat-

ed impact, abrasion or both, hardfacingcan offer valuable time and cost sav-ings. If you are ever in doubt about theprocess, consult a reputable filler metalmanufacturer or trusted welding supplydistributor for assistance. Most of alldon’t get discouraged. It may take sometime to get the hardfacing process andfiller metal selection right, but in theend you’ll have stronger, longer lastingequipment and more time in the field.

Tips from 9

With warmer weather approachingmany people are ready to get out andstart getting their yards prepared forspring. Catamount Consulting has afew tips to help people prevent injury tothemselves or others.

• Dress appropriately — long pantsand long-sleeved shirts can help protectyou from debris thrown from equip-ment. Avoid wearing jewelry that couldget caught or tangled. Remember hear-ing and eye protection. Wear shoes thatwill provide good support and will pro-tect your feet.

• Take a moment to inspect any equip-ment you are planning to use to makesure it is working correctly and all safe-ty devices are also working properly.

• Before beginning work in an area, conduct a walk through to make surethere is no debris such as rocks, sticks orother objects that could cause an injury.

Equipment that is used in landscap-ing, while very efficient, can be verydangerous. Each year many people areinjured in accidents that involve lawnequipment and tools. Rotary blades ona lawn mower can rotate at 200 milesper hour; projectiles that are thrownout at this speed can be deadly.

A couple things to remember whenoperating a lawn mower:

• When operating a push mowernever mow up and down the slope ofa hill, make sure you mow by goingback and forth.

• When operating a riding mower nev-er mow by going back and forth, mowup and down the slope.

• Make sure the discharge chutes ispointed away from bystanders.

• Make sure the mower is shut off andthe blades are stopped before clearingobstructions from the discharge chute.

• Never remove the safety shields orbypass the engine kill handle.

Robert Wing of Volt Landscape inQueensbury, NY had a few pieces ofadvice to offer homeowners to helpthem prepare a safe site for their land-scaper’s visit.

• Notify the landscape crew of anysinkholes that may have developed overthe winter or any holes that may havebeen dug by animals.

• Notify the crew of any buried or un-buried cables or wires.

• Introduce any dogs to the crew. • Advise the crew as to the location of

the septic.Robert also shared some of the guide-

lines they use to help keep not onlytheir employees safe but also peoplewho may be near the jobsite. Theseguidelines are useful for everyone doinglandscaping.

• Employees are not allowed to oper-ate equipment unless they have beentrained on it.

• Drink lots of fluids to keep cool, ifyou wait until you are hot it’s too late, heat stress and heat stroke can occur.

• Pay attention to the heat, if youneed to find shade or rest — do.

• Volt’s employees are trained to beaware of equipment working aroundthem but it is important people not toassume that the person driving equip-ment will be able to see or hear you.

• When loading and unloading, stoptraffic and use strobe lights.

• Always use the proper tools for the job. Taking the time to follow safety guide-

lines can help you have a safe and pro-ductive landscaping season!

RACINE, WI — CaseConstruction Equipmenttoday introduced the newCase 521F wheel loader, offering customers a 12percent increase in fuelefficiency over the previ-ous E Series model, whiledelivering faster accelera-tion and quicker cycletimes. The machine isavailable in standard Z-bar, extended reach andtool carrier models, andis the latest offering in

the company’s F Serieswheel loader line, whichboasts premium featuresand industry leading per-formance, productivityand efficiency.

Case chose selectivecatalytic reduction (SCR)technology for the 521F tomeet Tier 4 Interim emis-sions standards based onthe machine’s applicationtasks and power de-mands. SCR results inlower temperatures in the

exhaust system while op-timizing combustion.

“SCR was the obviouschoice for the 521F be-cause a wheel loader’stasks are more variable, creating inconsistent en-gine loads and power de-mands,” said Rob Mar-ringa, brand marketingmanager, Case Construc-tion Equipment. “Ratherthan compromise power,we let the engine do whatit does best — run at

peak performance — andthen use an after treat-ment for emissions.”

According to Marringa, the benefits of SCR tech-nology are greater efficien-cy and reduced downtimebecause there’s no height-ened fuel burn or dieselparticulate filter (DPF) re-generation. In addition, lower ambient tempera-tures means slower degra-dation of lubricating oil, which extends service in-

tervals. Furthermore, few-er engine componentsmeans less crowding un-der the hood and easier ac-cess to service points. Op-erators also will experiencea faster throttle responseand cleaner emissions byavoiding recirculationequipment utilizing cooledexhaust gas recirculation(CEGR) and DPFs.

“At Case, we’re commit-ted to matching the tech-nology with the task, andwe believe that SCR tech-nology for our F Serieswheel loaders is the sim-plest, most powerful andefficient solution,” Mar-ringa said.

Improved performance and

versatility enhanceproductivity

The new 521F wheelloader offers optionalheavy duty axles, en-abling it to perform moretasks such as operatingin scrap yards or recy-cling centers. These axles, with auto locking frontand open rear differen-tials, have the same de-sign as the larger F serieswheel loader axles, in-cluding metal face sealsand sintered bronzebrake linings. They offeroutstanding traction in all

conditions, especially innon-compacted surfaceslike gravel and help re-duce tire wear whenworking on hard surfaces.

“The heavy duty axleshave superior sealing ca-pability and longer servicelives, improving ownerand operator costs,” Mar-ringa said. “In addition, they can accept higherload capacities, allowingoperators to configure theunit with solid, foam filledor chain wrapped tires.”

On a 50 meter loadingand dumping cycle, Caseestimates the 521F wheelloader can make up to 56cycles per hour, moving upto 144-square-yards or 212tons of material per hour.

Advanced instruments and cab

improve machine andoperator effectivenessThe new advanced in-

strument cluster (AIC) onthe 521F wheel loaderhas four operatingmodes, allowing opera-tors and service techni-cians full visibility andcontrol of basic job func-tions, such as diesel ex-haust fluid (DEF) leveland fuel efficiency, aswell as protective controlsthat can help eliminate

New Case 521F wheel loader achieves advanced performance, fuel efficiency with new features and SCR emissions technology

The benefits of SCR technology are greaterefficiency and reduced downtime because

there’s no heightened fuel burn or diesel par-ticulate filter (DPF) regeneration.

costly repairs.“Auto Idle is a fuel sav-

ing feature that allows formultiple idle rates, there-by reducing fuel con-sumption while operatorsare waiting for the nexttruck to load or task to becompleted,” said Mar-ringa. “As an additionalbenefit to the Case wheelloader customer, Auto-matic Machine Protectionrecognizes a critical prob-lem with the hydraulics, engine or transmission, and shuts down the en-gine as soon as the ma-chine stops moving.”

The Case 521F wheelloader delivers class lead-ing comfort and visibilityand new features to im-prove operator effective-ness. Case’s Quiet Cabboasts the largest cab inthe industry, has a 70.8decibel rating, and sup-plies cleaner air with adual air filtration system. It also provides a morecomfortable ride with anoptional heated air rideseat and ergonomically po-sitioned controls that en-sure a long day in the cabwon’t reduce productivity.

“The 521F wheel loaderhas new options such asjoystick steering, a rearview camera and heatedside mirrors that allow for

precise control and visi-bility in tough conditionssuch as snow plowingand truck loading,” Mar-ringa said.

Case’s floor to ceilingwindows and improvedlighting system continueto provide excellent visi-bility, from the cuttingedge of a bucket to the tipof a fork.

More selection, largerattachments

The 521F wheel loadercan handle heavier andmuch larger bucketsthanks to the Case cou-pler system that pulls theattachment closer to themachine, providing sig-nificant breakout. Thecoupler is compatiblewith both JRB and ACSattachments. Also, theaddition of over 250 newbuckets, including lightmaterial buckets, rotarybrooms and forks, and 4-in-1 buckets, means the521F wheel loader offerseven more solutions for awide range of tasks. Theoffering includes CaseSmartFitTM bucket toothsystems. The SmartFitsystem provides stronger, more durable teeth andadapters, and hammer-less reusable locking pinsto improve digging per-formance.

The Case 521F wheelloader features a 4.5 literTier 4 Interim certifiedCase engine that deliversup to 131 gross hp. Classi-fied as a 2.1-square-yardwheel loader, the Case

521F has an operatingweight of 22,856 pounds.

The standard model de-livers 19,596 pounds oflift capacity and 16,735pounds of bucket break-out force, with hinge pin

height of 11-foot 10-inch-es for efficient truck andhopper loading.

NORCROSS, GA -— As the UnitedStates grapples with long overdue infra-structure repairs — 2009 estimates to-taled $2.2 trillion according to the Re-port Card for America’s Infrastructureby the American Society of Civil Engi-neers — Leica Geosystems in enablinghighway contractors win contracts, earn bonuses and save time and moneywith its Leica PaveSmart 3D machinecontrol system.

As the industry leader in St. Louis,MO, Fred Weber Inc. is earning up tothe maximum five percent smoothnessbonuses while paving two sections ofHighway 364 near St. Charles, MO, duein large part to the Leica PaveSmart 3Dmachine control system, which is sav-ing time and money as it eliminates allof the detailed survey labor normallyspent for a runway, staking of hubs, setting of blue tops, and the labor tosetup stringlines.

Under older systems, a concrete paveris controlled by two stringlines set atprecise locations on each side of thelane. “When we would pave with astringline, we were just happy to get100 percent of our pay,” said NickHilton, manager of Concrete Operationsfor Fred Weber Inc. “Now, with the LeicaPaveSmart 3D stringless system, we’re

not happy unless we’re getting a bonusfor smoothness.”

Integrating seamlessly with any GO-MACO paver or trimmer, the LeicaGeosystems system regulates thesteering and grade of the machine withno need to retrofit complex hydraulics. The system guides the trimmer in rela-tion to a digitized 3D model of thehighway that runs on a Leica comput-er onboard the machine.

“We trim with the Leica Geosystemsstringless system (and) we’ll trim all theway out into the trackline,” said Hilton.“Basically your paver track is runningon a smooth ride. And then you take thehuman error out of it. There’s humanerror in setting stringline and eyeballingit, and we don’t have that anymore.”

Saving money is essential at a timewhen there’s so little of it to update theU.S. infrastructure, which largely datesback 60, even 80 years. “It’s an outrage.Building a world class transportationsystem is part of what made us an eco-nomic superpower,” said PresidentBarack Obama, in his speech on jobsbefore a joint session of Congress onSept. 8. 2011. “There are private con-struction companies, all across Ameri-ca, just waiting to get to work.”

This year, Weber is building a new 10mile section of Interstate 69 near New-berry, IN. It’s a four lane divided high-way and the contractor is laying 11-inches of new pavement. Early profilo-graph readings indicate that theyearned an average of three percentbonuses on 25 sections of the north-bound passing lane.

The pavement base consists of 6-inches of 1-inch minus base stonetopped by three-inches of clean crushedstone. To place and trim the 3-inch lay-er, the contractor is using a GOMACOPS-2600 with an optional “blade kit,”controlled by a Leica PaveSmart 3D ma-chine control system. The GOMACO PS-2600 works 30-feet wide and Hilton at-tributes a share of his smoothness re-sults to the Leica Geosystems 3D con-trol system on the PS-2600.

“We love it,” said Hilton of his LeicaPaveSmart 3D stringless control sys-tem. “We like the mobility and ease ofaccess to the project. You don’t have astringline up in the way anymore. No-body can trip over the stringline orbump it to throw it off line. Plus, it freesup manpower to do something else. Andour profilograph numbers have comeway down since we’ve been running theLeica Geosystems Solution.”

RENSSELAER, IN —Talbert Manufacturing, aleader in the heavy hauland specialty built trailerindustry, has introducedits 50 ton 5051 travelingaxle trailer for customersthat need to comply with43-foot kingpin laws andregulations.

Kingpin laws vary stateto state but generally ap-ply to any trailer longerthan 48-feet and lessthan 53-feet. These regu-lations typically dictatethe maximum distancefrom the kingpin to thelast axle must measure43-feet or less. Adding toits series of traveling axletrailers, Talbert pushedthe deck length to thelimit, designing a 51-foottraveling axle trailer tomaximize the lower decklength and still meet the

43-foot kingpin law.

Talbert’s TA Series trail-ers are known for their sixdegree load angle. Thisgradual slope is ideal forthe towing and recoveryindustry, as well as rentalequipment and small tomidsize constructionequipment with lowground clearances, suchas rollers and pavers.

The 5051TA is loadedwith more standard fea-tures than other conven-tional units in a basemodel and it still deliverscost effective versatility ina variety of applications. For example, many othermanufacturers common-ly use worm gear winchesto cut extra expense. The15,000 pound planetarywinch, which comesstandard on all trailers inTalbert’s 50 ton TA Se-

ries, provides customerswith a more efficientwinch. The planetarywinch uses a direct drivesystem and offers up totwice the loading speed ofthe worm gear winch. Op-erators can run Talbert’splanetary winch througha multi-function wirelessremote, which allows oneperson to load a piece ofequipment without leav-ing the trailer. This is ide-al for loading inoperablecars or machinery.

For reliable performancein heavy duty industries,Talbert’s 5051TA alsocomprises a T-1 and 80Ksteel beam constructedframework and 4-inch I-beam crossmembers on 9-inch centers to accommo-date more concentratedloads. Further, the I-beamconstruction prevents cor-

rosion, unlike boxedcrossmenbers that tend torust from the inside out.

Other standard fea-tures include 1-1/2-inchapitong flooring as well asside and center tiedowns. Apitong is a tight-ly woven, highly densewood that provides alonger wear life because itis less susceptible tochipping or cracking thanother deck materials.

Side and center tie downslots are installed forgreater loading ease andapplication flexibility.

Founded in 1938, Tal-bert Manufacturing pro-vides the most completeline of heavy haul trailersand specialized trans-portation equipment forthe commercial, industri-al, military and govern-ment sectors; and in ap-plications that include re-

newable energy, aero-space, heavy construc-tion, in-plant materialhandling, manufacturing, processing systems andmuch more. For more in-formation, contact Tal-bert Manufacturing,1628 W. he month of March brings the first day ofspring, St. Patrick’s Day, and for this year,March even includes Easter. But for con-struction workers throughout New York andNew England, March is also the time whenthe Hard Hat Expo in Syracuse brings con-

remainder of the year. This year, more than 8,000 attendees took time to

head to the New York State Fairgrounds for this year’sevent March 6-7. For Ken Chilewski, Mac Sutton,Nathan Darrow and Neal Hayes, the show was farmore rewarding than they would ever have expected.Chilewski and Sutton took home commemorativeSavage rifles as a result of door prize drawings heldeach of the two days, at the Lee Publications, Inc.exhibit in Horticulture Hall. Additionally, Darrow wasthe lucky winner of a Milwaukee four tool combo kitwhile Hayes won a set of TEK-Z tools.

Competitors in the Skid Steer Rodeo enjoyed

Knowing what lies beneath thesurface is critical to the success of a project. TheExpo connected me to projects and people who willbenefit from our expertise.”

For exhibitors like Tracey Road Equipment (TRE) ofEast Syracuse, NY, the Hard Hat Expo has been along standing showcase for their lineup of equipmentand services to customers across the Northeastmarketing area. “This show serves as a platform forsales professionals from across New York Sate tomeet and directly interact with construction profes-sionals,” said a representative from TRE. This year,TRE had more than 20 of their sales professionals onhand to help customers answer any questions theymight have.

Hey Fred -I do payroll at a small

construction companyand the more people wehire in preparation forbusy season, the moretime I’m spending deci-phering and enteringhandwritten timecards.I’ve been reading a lotabout timecard entry appslately. Do you think it’stime I start looking at thisas an option for our PMs?

- Devon

Hey Devon -Mobile solutions are a

great way to save timeand increase efficiency, especially when it comesto entering time in thefield. And now thatthey’re more affordablethan ever, they’re an op-tion for many construc-tion companies.

But before you jump onthe mobile bandwagon, you must do a couplethings. First, it’s important(as it is with any type ofimplementation) to makesure that your projectmanagers and anyone elsewho’ll be using the mobileapp, are willing to learnand use the technology.

Second, you must havea process in place to har-ness all the data collectedfrom your mobile devices.Let me give you an exam-ple: a remote timecard en-try application made forthe construction industrywill allow you to entertime based on the em-ployee, job, cost code andmore. If you’ve only got anoff the shelf accountingprogram in place, there’sreally nowhere for all thatdata to go, because theprogram is not equippedto handle all of that infor-mation. You want to makethe most of the data!

So as long as you’ve gotthose points covered, I saygo for it! If not, don’t putthe cart before the horse. It’ll end in certain failure.

Good luck!- Fred
