Red Ribbon week is
upon us again! This
is a national week of
fun used to help en-
force the danger of
drug use to students.
For Hardesty
Schools, Red Ribbon
Week will be the
week of November 3
to 7. The Hardesty
FFA chapter leads
the activities of the
week, and, as a group
of FFA members will
be gone for the Na-
tional FFA Conven-
tion in Louisville,
Kentucky, Red Rib-
bon Week is the

Be Drug Free! By Madison Gibson
Origin of Halloween By Rocio Cano
Have you ever won-
dered about the ori-
gin of Halloween?
According to Bodie
Hodge in Answers In
Genius, many re-
searchers believe that
the origin of Hallow-
een can be tracked
back about 2,000
years to the Celtic
druids of Europe.
Halloween was cre-
ated by a group of
pagans who named it
“Samhain.” They
celebrated
“Samhain” in honor
of the dead. They
would also offer an
enormous amount of
sacrificed crops and
animals on October
31. The word origi-
nates from the day
before All Saint’s
Day, which was
known as “All Hal-
low Evening.” The
name kept shortening over-
time from “All Hallow’s
Eve” to “All Ha low’s
Even” to what is now
“Halloween.”

around a campfire with a

done with the family this au-

This year Hardesty sent two
students to the Tulsa State
Fair. Ms. Turner, Hardesty’s
FFA Advisor, took Theoline
Hegwood and Michael
Whiteley to exhibit chickens
from September 26 to 28.
There were somewhere
around 200 to 300 birds from
all over the nation entered in
the show. Michael’s chickens
won first place and second
place in the Silky Class, and
Theoline’s chickens won sec-
ond place and third place in
the Americana Class.
Heather Hoeffner served as an
extra chaperone. They had
loads of fun while they were
there, too. The group enjoyed
looking around at various ex-
hibits. A few such exhibits
were the Welsh Pony Pulling
classes and the FFA and 4-H
booths where they received
ideas for the upcoming labor
auction. They also were able
to watch the National Sugar
Art Show, a nation-wide cake
in a cardboard pumpkin. For
the “Hay Stack Find,” there
were gift bags in between the
hay bales. At the “Pumpkin
Walk,” similar to the carnival
cake walk, the winner re-
ceived a bag of candy. Verna
Wright won the game of
“Pumpkin Ring Toss” as she
tossed a ring on a pumpkin

Running a bus route is
more than one might think. It
takes several steps to acquire
a Commercial Driver’s Li-
cense. To drive a school bus
or other commercial grade
vehicle, one must take several
written, vision, and drug tests,
as well as the actual driving
test. Why? These vehicles
are larger and more complex
to drive. For a person to op-
erate one of these monsters, it
requires a higher degree of
skill and training than the nor-
mal car or pickup. In this case
the driver is also responsible
for valuable cargo: school stu-
dents. Here at Hardesty, we
have four men who are able to
drive these giant cinderblocks
on wheels. Mr. Faris, Mr.
Mariconda, who has been
driving our school bus until
recently, Coach Adams, who
drives the teams to all the
games,
and now our very own Mr.
O’Dell. He has completed all
the requirements and has
earned his CDL. He now is
in charge of picking up and
taking home students who at-
tend Hardesty Schools. Con-
gratulations Mr. Odell on re-

On Sunday, October 12, 2014,
I had the privilege of meeting
and discussing school related
topics with Dr. John Cox. Dr.
John Cox is the Democratic
Candidate for State Superinten-
dent of Public Education. He
joined us for church at Cross-
roads Bible Fellowship in
Balko, and then he met us for
lunch at The Bricks in Guy-
mon. We discussed the im-
provements he wants to make
to the schools. One of the
things that caught my atten-
tion was that he wanted to
discontinue the use of End-of
Instruction tests and replace
them with ACTs. He took
time to talk to me about how
my year was going and if my

softball game. Team one was
captained by Jeremiah Mal-

Mr. Faris. The game began as
a blowout by team two but in

I need to know for my future. We
also discussed how politics is not
in just the government, but how it
is also in our everyday practices.
He is a very kind and personable
man who speaks from the heart
instead of off a paper. You can

Cox at the website listed below.
