2020 HARDIN COUNTY FAIR INFORMATION

Together with the Hardin County Agricultural Society and our volunteers, we are working together to finalize a modified fair experi-ence which will provide opportunities for 4-H and FFA members to showcase their learning, and to receive evaluation and recogni-tion. Thank you for being patient as we plan a safe and fun experience for our youth. To be able to provide this experience for you, we need your cooperation to ensure that guidelines set by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa State University Extension and Iowa 4-H are followed. Please note:

It is RECOMMENDED that volunteers, participants, and families use face coverings and honor social distancing during all events.

Only the participating 4-H and FFA members, essential/immediate family member(s), approved 4-H staff and volunteers will

be allowed. Youth shows will NOT be open to the public. If you or your family member(s) are feeling ill or have a fever, do not attend.

Your safety is important to us! Your extension staff and fair board will be cleaning high touch areas frequently, practicing physical distancing, and providing a safe and fun fair experience! If you have any questions or concerns on safety please contact the exten-sion office.

STATIC (NON-LIVESTOCK) PROJECTS: *Entries are due June 29th at https://hardin.fairentry.com/ For the safety of our judges and youth we will be doing a “State Fair style” judging day for all static projects. 4-H and Clover Kids members will not be present with their project when the judging occurs. The following outlines how this will look.

MONDAY, JULY 6TH 4-H and Clover Kids Projects will be dropped off on the fair grounds at your club’s scheduled time. We will create a drive through line for the drop off process. Everyone will remain in their vehicle until it is your turn to get out. Families will enter the youth building one at a time, attach entry cards, and put exhibits at the designated station. Make sure to have goal sheets/write-ups attached If you have multiple pieces for ONE project please make sure to label with your name/attach together to help prevent

getting misplaced Projects will be picked up on Saturday following the same process as drop off. Project results will be shared online later in the week. State Fair considered and selected exhibits will still be chosen, regardless if a State Fair occurs or not, as this is an achieve-

ment. Photos will be shared online. Junior Excellence and Challenge Class Champions will still be awarded and photos will be shared online. The exhibit building will be closed to the public. We will not have a Garden Tour this year. We are encouraging 4-Hers to complete the Vegetable Garden Project Worksheet

(found on our website), and include that in a write-up/report about their garden. This can be exhibited as class 10230 during static judging.

We will not have club booth displays or a contest this year. We will not have a club bucket of flowers contest this year, but individual 4-Hers may still enter one in the challenge class. We will be talking to local business about displaying fair projects in their lobbies (when they are open to the public). Stay

tuned for more information. Food and Nutrition – It is possible that prepared and preserved food items will be judged on appearance and goal sheet/

write-up. More information to come. We ask that Clover Kids pre-enter exhibits in hardin.fairentry.com so that we may pre-print tags for you to save time. A class

in the “Static” department has been added just for Clover Kids, Class 1600

YQCA: 2020 INFORMATION

Important Information for ALL Livestock Exhibitors

YQCA (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals) certification is required for all market, dairy, and egg producing animal exhibitors wishing to show at the Hardin County or Iowa State Fairs. This includes beef cattle, bottle calves, dairy goats, dairy cattle, sheep, meat goats, pigs, rabbits, and poultry. New this year in fairentry.com, when an exhibitor enters an animal for fair in a division that requires YQCA Certification, the exhib-itor will be prompted to enter the certification number on the check-out screen. The exhibitor will not be able to submit entries unless YQCA is already completed. If you use the same 4HOnline account for YQCA and FairEntry, the certification number will auto-populate. FFA members will need to enter the correct number on their YQCA certificate. To complete YQCA, go to yqca.org, and sign in with your 4HOnline account information.

Beginning June 1st, Iowa 4-H is allowing phased re-opening of face-to-face programming, which includes 4-H club meetings. Face to face programming should be limited to 50% of the capacity of the facility AND it is EXPECTED that the facility or location must be able to accommodate safe practices such as social distancing, etc. It is also important to consider slowly moving towards face to face gatherings. We have sent leaders guidelines to follow to provide a safe environment for the 4-Hers. As 4-H families, here are some guideline we would like you to consider as you attend meetings:

All participants are asked to wash hands with soap and warm water for a minimum of 20 seconds or with a hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol content upon arrival, and after activities are completed.

Food preparation as an activity or to serve should be limited to pre-packaged or catered food. It is EXPECTED that face coverings and social distancing practices will be used. Hand sanitizer, with a minimum of 60% alcohol and/or disinfectant wipes for participants to use upon arrival and throughout

the club meeting and/or activities should be provided Do not plan to share supplies (ex. A pair of scissors for each member) All members should bring and use their own writing utensil. Anyone attending, who has been sick or around someone who has been sick, please stay home. Only club members and essential guardians should attend the meetings. Non-4-H youth should not attend. We request postponing club tours and field trips/events until later in the summer.

HORSE PROJECT GROUP MEETINGS: Horse Project Leaders Patty Hammer (641-849-0593) and Martha Steding (641-373-2434) are looking forward to finally beginning classes in June. Arena classes will be held at the Hardin Co. Fairgrounds arena in Eldora every Thursday from 6:00 PM to ? June 4th - Western Pleasure - Guest Speaker - Denton DeBuhr June 11th - Western Pleasure - Guest Speaker - Denton DeBuhr

June 18th – Trail - Guest Speaker - Barb Wright June 25th – Trail - Guest Speaker - Barb Wright June 30th (Tuesday) – Barrel Racing - Guest Speaker - Natalie Foutch July 7th (Tuesday) – Pole Bending - Guest Speaker - Natalie Foutch July 12th - (Sunday) Hardin County Fair 4-H Horse Show - Be prepared to show off your horse and yourself! Please note that all horse project participants must be registered in 4hOnline and be enrolled in the “Horse & Pony” project area before attending any horse project classes. This helps us know who to get important horse information to, and covers the insur-ance liability issues. Participants not complying will be sent home until they are enrolled. Non 4-H members and siblings too young for 4-H should not attend 4-H Horse Project meetings due to not being covered under our insurance policy. Because we know that not all 4-Hers may feel comfortable attending, we are waiving the requirement to attend horse project group meetings to show at the fair this year. THINGS REQUIRED TO ATTEND THE ARENA CLASS: boots with heels, jeans, helmets, good fitting flat nylon halter & lead, the reg-ular bridle you ride in including: ring snaffle, SPLIT reins, & fly spray! You and your horse need to be ready to work by 6:00 p.m. All horses should be lunged and saddled by 6:00 pm. They also need a helmet and boots with heels for safe riding. We STRONGLY en-courage parents to attend meetings!

DOG PROJECT GROUP Dog Project Group classes have resumed on Monday evenings at 7 PM, at the Hardin County Fairgrounds. Make sure you are fol-lowing the facebook site: Hardin County 4H Dog Obedience. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to call Martin Steiner at 641-849-0329.

RESUMING CLUB & PROJECT GROUP MEETINGS (CONTINUED)

Do I have to pre-enter exhibits for the fair? Yes! Your static exhibits must be pre-entered online. Enter your exhib-its at http://hardin.fairentry.com from June 2 to June 29 at 4:30 pm. We will print your entry tags and have them available for you to pick up at conference judging check-in. What do I bring to Conference Judging Day? 1.) Your exhibit(s) 2.) Goal sheets or written goals (see below) 3.) Description of “elements and principles of design” (see below) 4.) Entry fee - $3 for the first ten exhibits, 25¢ for each additional exhib-it What are “goal sheets”? “4-H exhibit goal sheets” (from June newsletter or www.extension.iastate.edu/hardin/4h) should be completed for each project. The form may be retyped, and questions answered in an exhib-it write-up (see below), but these questions must be answered: 1.) What was your exhibit goal? 2.) How did you go about working toward your goal(s)? 3.) What were the most important things that you learned that you learned as you worked toward your goal? Goals should be complete and well written, and should correlate with the class they are in. All exhibit areas, except photography, should have a goal sheet. Photography exhibits should use the photography label and do not need a goal sheet.

What are “elements and principles of design” Specifically for visual arts, clothing, home improvement, and sewing & needle arts, elements of principles and design should be discussed. Design elements are line, shape, form, color, and texture. Art principles are balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity. Information on elements and principles of design for visual art can be found at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/publications/4h634.pdf What is an “exhibit write-up”? Some 4-Hers choose to do a “write-up” to share with the judge that tells about their goals and the story of their exhibit. Sometimes they include photos showing the processes they took to create the exhibit. The write up generally answers the three questions asked on the goal sheet, and elements and principals of design, if applicable. Often the write-up is presented in a binder or folder. Presenting the goals in this manner is not required. Remember, it is your exhibit...make it your own! Where can I get a fair book? At the Hardin County Extension Office, or http://www.extension.iastate.edu/hardin/4h or http://www.hardin.fairentry.com. How do I know what class my exhibit goes in? The first question you should ask yourself is, “what is my goal for this exhibit?” For example, I would like to bring a pillow to the fair. Was the goal to learn how to sew? Then it would enter the Sewing and

Please refer to our webpage, www.extension.iastate.edu/hardin/4h and review “Foods for Iowa Fairs…” How do I prepare vegetables and flowers for exhibit? Youth Animal (K-3) entries are due June 15th and may be entered in FairEntry, or they may still use paper entry and ID forms. For 2020, Clover Kids should enter non-livestock projects online. Look for class 1600 in the Static Department. We will pre-print tags for you and this will make the exhibit drop-off process quicker. What about FFA members? FFA members must use this online program to enter exhibits, too! They have to choose “Not in 4-H and need to create a FairEntry ac-count?” (below the blue sign in button). A helpsheet/directions for FFA members can be found at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/hardin/4h, or http://www.hardin.fairentry.com. A special instruction sheet “Directions for Hardin County Fair Online Entries” is also available at or at the Hardin County Extension Office, http://www.extension.iastate.edu/hardin/4h, or http://www.hardin.fairentry.com
