TO OUR SBC FAMILY TO OUR SBC FAMILY TO OUR SBC FAMILY TO OUR SBC FAMILY

Donna and I will be on sabbatical for the months of May through July: this is the first time I have had one and we are very grateful. We will be pulling our trailer as we visit family in Oregon, California and Missouri. This will be a time of physical and spiritual renewal for us as we visit different churches, read, and study. I hope to return with fresh energy and vision to apply to this wonderful Church. We love you all very much.

I have been working with Pastor Shane, the Elders and staff to ensure a smooth transition and I am confident that they are well prepared. I am also confident that all ministries and committees will continue their efforts for our Lord. As always, the office is a good place to start if you have questions. Pastor Shane and the Elders will, of course, also be available. The Elders have set up a rotating schedule to be available for visitation or other needs.

You will be in our prayers, and we likewise will appreciate your prayers for us. May God bless you.

Love, Pastor Dave

FROM YOUR ELDERSFROM YOUR ELDERSFROM YOUR ELDERSFROM YOUR ELDERS

Although Pastor Dave and Donna will be greatly missed during their well-deserved sabbatical, we are making every effort to ensure that the needs of the Body are being met. Some specifics:

• Pastor Shane will be overseeing the church office and will be available to either conduct or help to make

arrangements for baby dedications, baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc.

• Elder Paul Hanson will conduct the Wednesday evening prayer and Bible studies.

• If you are a first-time visitor to SBC, your blue “welcome bag” contains a get-acquainted CD with one of pastor

Dave’s recent sermons. Your coupon for a free meal can be redeemed with pastor Shane or any Elder, or you

can wait for pastor Dave’s return in August. Thanks for being here!

• The Elders are rotating responsibility for “Elder of the Week” (see below), and are available 24/7. Contact this elder either directly or through the church office for visitation needs (hospitalization, illness), counseling re-quests, or any issues of special concern.

ROCK IN MY SHOE

Once upon a time there was a lady who went for a walk with Jesus. They hadn’t been walking very long when she began to lag behind. Jesus asked her if there was some reason she was slowing down. She briskly said, “Oh, no. Did I slow down?” She tried to pick up her speed. It wasn’t long before she began to limp. Jesus said, “I notice you are limping. Do you want to tell me about it?” She put on her happy face and said, “Oh, I just have a rock in my shoe.” He said, “Well, why don’t we stop and get that rock out of your shoe?” She said, “Oh, it’s okay. I’m used to walking with rocks in my shoe. It develops a callous after a while, don’t worry.” Jesus noticed as people passed them on the trail, the lady very quickly put on her happy face as they walked by and greeted them with her chipper “Nice day for a walk.” and as soon as they passed her face slid into suffering mode. He told her there was really no reason she had to continue with the rock in her shoe, that it was slowing down their adventure to-gether and she was missing some of the beauty he had brought her to see, and that it could lead to permanent damage. He asked her if there was any reason she felt that she couldn’t part with her rock. She said, “What if I take out the rock and I still limp?” He told her that she probably would limp for a while as her foot would need to heal and that the limp was sort of a habit. He assured her that he was right beside her and he’d be glad to put his arm around her and support her all the way. She was rather embarrassed to admit that she felt compelled to be “independent” and didn’t really want to be needy. After all, she had depended on people before and they always disappointed her. He assured her that she was safe with him and reminded her that up to that point (when she decided to walk with Him) he had been carrying her everywhere. They came to a bench on the trail and sat down for a few minutes. Jesus said to her, “I’d like to take that rock from your shoe.” She drew back and said “I’d be embarrassed for you to see my dirty feet and my holey socks…and besides, I’ve been told my whole life that my feet are ugly.” He assured her that everyone who hikes gets dirty feet and socks are not eternal and that he was rather fond of her feet. “After all, I made them for you and chose just the right ones.” Will she trust Him? Is her God big enough to take rocks from her shoe?

Do you have a rock in your shoe that is slowing your walk with Jesus? What is it?

Karen Machamer

ALL AUTHORITY

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Matt. 28:18 (NIV)

Nearly seven miles down, at the bottom of the ocean, live fantastic creatures. Below the reach of sunlight are the tentacled, razor-fanged, and bioluminescent inspirations of science fiction. Less than ten percent of these life forms have ever been seen or catalogued by humans, and yet Jesus has authority over it all.

Two point seven million light-years away is nebula NGC 604. At the center, 200 hot stars up to 60 times the size of our sun cause wisps of gaseous cotton candy 1,500 light-years across to fluoresce with blue-green luminance. Je-sus has authority over it all.

“Hello Mike,” the angel Gabriel greets Archangel Michael in a voice that booms with the crashing of a thousand waves. The two hover among otherworldly creatures so radiant a bold earthling would wet himself in their pres-ence. Jesus has authority over it all.

In Lahore, Pakistan a clean-cut man barely nineteen years old is blindfolded and forced to kneel as drunken activ-ists circle him. “You are enemy to Allah,” the leader spits and hurls a jagged rock at the victim’s back. “Say to us Christ is cursed or that will be only the first of the stones that kill you.” Jesus has authority over it all.

In my little life are troubles which I feel are somehow outside the concern of our Lord. Because he temporarily al-lows suffering to refine me, I conclude he is not in control. So I spend hours deliberating how I can avoid the very situations God wants to use to make me more like him. In my mistrust and thrashing about, I am fighting against him; against ultimate good in my life. I have a perfect loving Father who promises to care for and educate me, but still I act like an orphan. I hoard possessions, mistrust changes, and hide from baths of my character.

All my skittish worry comes from doubting the authority of Jesus. The fragility of my heart, however, does not change the fact that Jesus is responsible for every detail of my life, as he is for the rest of the universe. I need to radically increase my estimate of the size of my Jesus.

Prayer: “Holy Jesus, forgive my doubting your authority.”

Don Goulding
