Keeping It Local
By Donna Blasdell
One of the most frequent complaints being we hear in the District A Council Office is “we don’t have business-
es in the area where we can where we can shop.” However, this is very much a “Catch-22” type of situation.
Many times over the years I have lived in Edgewood, I have seen new businesses open and close within a short
period of time. I can only assume it is because local residents are not patronizing the store, which has many
causes I am sure
As residents, we need to support new businesses to keep them open, which should encourage other new
businesses to open in our area. I know smaller shops often cost more, may require shopping at more than one
location, and probably will require more travel to get all the items needed on the list. However to encourage
growth in our area, I encourage people to scout and shop the local stores.
As we enter the holiday gift giving season think about local merchants and how we can support them this year.
If you have an office holiday party can you have it catered by a local restaurant? If you give gift certificates to
friends and neighbors, can they come from a local merchant? Shop local stores for unique and one of a kind
gifts.
To get the word out about our local businesses, I would like for our readers to send me the name, addresses and
if possible, contact information for locally owned shops and restaurants. We would like to start featuring these
local businesses in the newsletter so everyone can learn about the hidden gems we have in District A.
