SHELLArchitectural constructions - 2011Authors: Haris Bulić, Adi Kurtić, Dea Dudić and Soraja Ćehić

Large pavilion structure, as required by the project assignment, is located in Park of light in Sarajevo, in place of the Austrian house, but different structural system is set for each team of students.

Inspired by the natural pleated structures that are found on the beach, Shell pavilion is showing off its pleated construction in brutalist manner.

The pavilion, characterized by symmetry, consists of two massive juxtaposed folds with pleated surfaces. These folds form a meandered line in contact with ground, making entrance for natural light.

The two massive folds, made from reinforced con-crete, form a tent like shape, forming a covered en-trance and confronting each other at the top.

The interior is spacious and completely open with a gallery in the middle and storage rooms below ground.

The space is designed as a showroom for large scale art installations and exhibitions or cultural events.

STUDENTS APARTMENTInterior and design - 2012Author: Haris Bulić

Assignment includes choosing of living space (usu-ally your own) and redesign of interior settings to match the new purpose, or presumed group of users.

Duplex in Sarajevo’s Ciglane was selected for rede-sign - a two story apartment with orientation east-west and is meant to be rented to students.

Interventions on the first floor are the removal of partition walls between the kitchen and dining room and expansion the window opening on the east side

of the apartment that offers a view of the city, while on the upper floor only intervention is a transforma-tion of bathroom and storage room into two identical bathrooms that are accessible from the bedrooms so that both users have their private bathroom.

Correlation between functional units has remained relatively the same and the furniture is completely replaced by new elements - simple and minimalist pieces from different manufacturers.

PRIMARY SCHOOLArchitectural design - 2012Author: Haris Bulić

Conceptual design of primary school provides a new facility for the education of 576 students at the loca-tion of the Second Gymnasium in Sarajevo.

All the shortcomings of the current building at the site have been taken into consideration as well as the use of the natural potential of the plot have been pursued - a spacious green park. The building is designed with a horizontal tendency that is trans-versely positioned over the plot with large windows catching the northern and southern lights. A longitu-dinal shape connects Alipašina street and the street Koševo - that were divided by the height difference.

The gym is half buried in the ground and the flat roof which covers it is used as a school square from which the inside can be reached via side entrances. This way, the entrance area is enabled at both ends of the longitudinal form of the building - one entrance on the ground floor and two on the first floor.

Addition to the main part of the building is also a lon-gitudinal sequence of classrooms for children from first to fourth grade, which is linked to a sports hall and has a connection to the main part, creating an inner atrium - safe and green, designed for outdoor school and play for the young.

Page 13: Haris Bulić • Portfolio

The ground floor has various con-tents such as classrooms for art and music oriented to the north, which can be connected and open to the inner hall during events; through cafeteria and dining room that can be opened to the inner courtyard; a series of separate classrooms for lower grades which is oriented to the south and play areas and offices for teachers in the part that connects the main part of the building with a part for the younger students.

First floor is reserved for older stu-dents where the classrooms are ori-ented to the south and laboratory areas to the north, all accessed from the gallery halls.

Administrative part of the building is rising above the main entrance and the school principal and teachers have enabled view of the schoolyard.

MEAT INDUSTRYArchitectural design - 2012Author: Haris Bulić

This project is a response to the given parameters specified in project assignment requiring the factory for processing poultry meat on location in Konjic. The complex consists of two buildings - production hall and an entrance pavilion. Production hall, con-ditioned by elongated shape of the plot, has a length of 144 meters and laminated frames of the primary structure have a span of 40 meters. Secondary struc-ture is hanged on the inside of the frames and fol-lows the curved parts of the frame so that the visible white curved facade gives the building, bright and distinctive appearance regardless of its brutal indus-trial purpose.

Arrangement of functional units is such that all the spaces lining up around the central hall. Functional sections start with utility rooms to accommodate poultry, a veterinary inspection and servicing of vehi-cles. This is followed by a tunnel where the receiving depot, unclean sections and slaughterhouse. Clean section of processing meat is placed in a large space with refrigerators and storerooms, after which the meat is packaged and stored and ready for the wrap-ping in the transport packaging and distribution. Last functional unit in a series which is the closest to the road, are administrative premises, changing rooms for workers and restaurant.

SARAJEVO GREEN DESIGN CENTREInterior and design - 2013Authors: Haris Bulić and Dea Dudić

SGDC has a new 430 m2 office where, in addition to storage and technical facilities, they need a multi-functional workspace with an office, silence lounge and a library, as well as a cafeteria with meeting lounge and, information centre.

Dividing the office into three connected sections lined up along a single pathway we get a simple func-tional organization where each area has two comple-mentary functions. Ground plan symmetry, conflict of orthogonal and slanted surfaces, conspicuous interior beams and rectangular shapes on the facade, perception of ge-

ometry and colour as an important influence on the mood of users, led to the seeking of inspiration in the works of Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, whose influence is subtly reflected in the design in-terior, especially on some details such as the kitchen cabinets and M chair.

The space is characterized by versatility, which is achieved with minimal number of barriers and sim-ple furniture design that is transformable. The entire area is visually associated by use of achromatic col-ours, but details in various warm colours give a visual accent for each of the spatial units.

Page 17: Haris Bulić • Portfolio

In the first zone are red accents, which are accentu-ated in the area of social contacts, and rounded de-tails which towards the work zone discreetly turn into a straight line. Yellow and orange details have a positive impact on working atmosphere and create stimulating visual accents, and straight lines suggest precision and discipline.

CUBEInteriors and design – 2013Authors: Haris Bulić i Dea Dudić

Cube is a furniture set designed as a response to the need for transformable sitting piece for cafeteria.

Designed as an interior element of the awarded inte-rior design project Sarajevo Green Design Center, it received a separate first award for furniture design. It is awarded by the furniture design company “Inside”, where the prototype is also produced in collabora-tion with authors.

Together, the square table and its four seats make “a cube” that appears to float. Seat design enables several configurations which can form round or sharp edges of the set.

Main characteristics of Cube are simplicity, symme-try and contrast between the elements. The contrast is noticed in the use of full and empty space, as well as materialization and color of hard and soft elements, and simplicity is in the cubic form of individual ele-ments as well as the whole set.

S LOUNGE CHAIR Interiors and furniture design 3 - 2013Authors: Haris Bulić i Dea Dudić

S LOUNGE (chair and sofa) is upholstered furniture with curved wooden sides, designed for lounge area in public and residential buildings.

It is characterized by the simplicity of design and form, curved lines and rough fabric which is in con-trast with the glossy wooden sides.

Constructive rods, which carry the sofa and connect wooden parts, are hidden under the seat so it looks like the sofa is suspended between the sides.

BOSNIAN HOUSE The methodology and phenomenology of active approach to architectural heritage - 2013Author: Haris Bulić

The analysis of settlement Vratnik in Sarajevo dis-covered objects with the lowest worthiness and on the site of one of them a new house is designed.

Although it is a protected townscape ensemble - the old town, which is located next to the White Bastion, most of the buildings on the site are dilapidated or damaging to the value of the ensemble, so the new object should, in addition to architectural value, have ambient value and it is therefore largely dependent on traditional elements and proportions of old Bos-nian houses.

The new house is being strongly rooted in the past, taking over some architectural elements (such as oriel window, window proportions, the organization of the yard, or large eaves) and the use of materials (Bosnian wooden roof tiles, stone ground floor, white lime mortar on oriel, emphasized chromatic contrast between white facade and dark wooden elements). The house builds the ambience of the site and repre-sents a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Bosnian house.

LINES OF SARAJEVOUrban design – 2013Authors: Haris Bulić i Dea Dudić

The project Lines of Sarajevo includes urban inter-ventions and transformations in the “triangle” be-tween National Theatre, Prešern’s Park and Youth Theatre in Sarajevo.

Parking on the square next to the National Theatre is moved to the underground garage that is already planned below the square. Since the area would then become a pedestrian focal point, the roads would be paved and levelled with other paved surfaces to offer a visual unity, and lines of car traffic are marked with darker colour of paving.

Other interventions include urban furniture; activa-tion of space behind and in front of the Youth Thea-tre; access to the Gallery Roman Petrović; landscap-ing of Prešern’s Park; animation of the facade in front of the Youth Theatre; roofing the ramp for access to the underground garage and construction of multi-functional green ramps on the Susan Sontag square.

Page 27: Haris Bulić • Portfolio

There are two theatres, art gal-lery, and historical remains of the mosque, in addition to facili-ties for housing, catering, social-izing and entertainment on this location. The opening of the new promenade connects the loca-tion with another theatre, and other facilities in Titova Street.

Finally, the Lines of Sarajevo are the same materialization as the square and roads, but in red col-our:

• Line of culture connects four cultural buildings and the open stage on the square in front of the Youth Theatre.

• Line of life indicates the new pedestrian promenade, and con-nects areas for entertainment, socializing and relaxing

• Line of architectural heritage connects the previous two with historical remains in the park

CAFFE BLAGAJThe protection and development of historic urban ensemble - 2014Author: Haris Bulić

In a series of projects in and around the town of Bla-gaj and through the activities of the team of students who were engaged in interventions in the old part of the city, demolition plans were made for the build-ings that degrade townscape and new projects were made - the new architecture that should represent the new values while respecting the old.

Cafe is located in an ideal location for its purpose. For tourists it would represent a point of rest after a walk through the old town and before visiting Tekija or the fortress. In addition to catering purposes it would be providing information to tourists as the information desk with brochures and maps.

Besides the position, the value of the site is reflected in the yard with large trees that is a green oasis on the facade canvas of the street without compromis-ing continuity.

In place of the old, new object is planned with the entrance below the oriel and a dining area on the ground floor, while the cubic form on the the first floor with a terrace offers a view over the river and the street. Basement contains a wine cellar and beer taproom - content that faces south and exit to the lower level of the courtyard.

WOK PAVILION Conceptualization and architectural design – 2014Authors: Haris Bulić, Dea Dudić i Ena Hadžić

Wave of Kadiköy

While working on a special project, students from En-schede, Istanbul and Sarajevo made a detailed anal-ysis of the Kadiköy in Asian part of Istanbul. When these analyses were revisited, it was concluded that the coastal area, which is currently used as a parking lot, is an ideal location for a temporary pavilion.

A need for an attractive structure was noted, in or-der to activate this area and to draw residents to the coast. Analysis of cultural events in Kadiköy was taken into consideration, as well as wishes and needs of residents and tourists, which lead to the conclu-sion that residents visit cinemas almost daily. Cin-emas are concentrated on the inland, and there is smaller number of cultural facilities along the coast. Finally, a number of different preferable uses for the new structure were defined: open-air cinema, per-formances, exhibitions, relaxation, recreation and socializing.

Page 31: Haris Bulić • Portfolio

Since it is located along the coast and near residen-tial structures, inspiration is drawn from the location itself - from the line that divides land and water, and connects people and nature. Synthesis of the nature and built structures is noticeable in the form of the pavilion: curved line, as stylized wave, is used for the auditorium, and the marine rope was chosen for the materialization as environmentally friendly material; straight lines of the built structures are visible in the cube on the other side of the pavilion. Green vegetation and the blue colour of the Sea of Marmara are visible on the reflective surface of the pavilion, which find a common tone with the yel-low ropes on the auditorium. Catching attention is achieved by sculptural and unconventional design and selection of materialization while activation of this area and the position of the pavilion at the site creates and emphasizes the continuity of pedestrian paths. The position and orientation of the pavilion are determined by the need for facilitating and di-recting the view. The structure has the possibility of transformation. The “waves” can be separated and closed into the cube, and depending on the function, the structure can be put together in different ways and be used as a single unit or several smaller parts.

DAMIĆ HOUSEDepartment for interior and design – 2015Authors: Haris Bulić i Dea Dudić

National monument Damić house is located in the centre of Sarajevo, in Radićeva Street. This residen-tial-commercial building is built in 1927, designed by architects Helen Baldasar and Dušan Smiljanić. It represents one of the first modernistic expressions in Sarajevo architecture. Influences of the Czech school of cubism are clearly visible on its original frontal fa-cade as well as impact of traditional Bosnian archi-tecture. Damić House is legally protected building but protection measures are not implemented.

This project includes interior redesign of all rooms of the living area in the building, the intervention on the roof, and design of the private inner courtyard, which is enabled by the project of complementary master thesis. For insight into the redesign of the rest of the build-ing it is necessary to take a look at the interior design project of the commercial section of Damić House, located on the ground floor and basement. Author of this project is Dea Dudić.Both projects are the result of close collaboration on research, and together they offer complementary approaches to redesign of the entire building, so it is recommended to take a look at the research work.

Page 33: Haris Bulić • Portfolio

The project aims to restore the original use of the residential section as a living area for one family. Three residential units are redesigned in such a way so that interior reflects the connec-tion between three generations of users, but various details, ma-terialization and colour reveal their characteristics.

Selected designer furniture, combined with the author’s de-sign, reflects a contemporary interpretation of traditional ma-terials and forms combined with modernist aesthetic principles and elements of the interior, which results with a contempo-rary interior with a retro feeling.

KING KONGWho do we build/work for?Illustration: Haris Bulić

Caricature on theme of the negative impact of inves-tors, who are building in Sarajevo, was created as part of a series of articles published in the third is-sue of the Tristotrojka magazine. Illustration deals with the problem of appeasement of the city admin-istration under the pressure and demands of inves-tors, but also the role of the architect in the process. The result of the practice, which deals in legislative changes or illegal constructions to pursue maximum quadrature and profits, are buildings disproportion-ate to its surroundings. Their dystopian appearance is permanently damaging the Sarajevo skyline.

PUBLIC DISCUSSIONS IN BIHCover designDesign: Haris Bulić

The publication “Public discussions in BiH - from form to essence” of the NGO Centre for Civic Ini-tiatives is an analysis of legislative practice that deals with the problem of public discussions. It suggests that the public discussion is usually held only for form’s sake and that conclusions reached are not used and implemented in practice.

The design of the publication Public discussions in Bosnia and Herzegovina is characterized by a very simple visual stroke on the front page with colors that indicate the importance of this topic and symbolizes the essence of the public consultation process.

The competition subject for the logo for Faculty of Architecture in Sarajevo is the minimalist display of old Bosnian house with oriel window within the square.

It is inspired by the cabinets and doors in the hall of the building, which are painted in “Mondrian style” with basic colors, but also the values of local tradi-tional and vernacular architecture that during stud-ies at the faculty receive special attention.

The Commission did not declare the winner of this competition.

BBQThe first built projectDesign and construction: Haris Bulić

The design and construction of barbecue is an inde-pendent mini-project for a family member, but as the first built project, it has a special significance because it reminds of valuable experience in masonry, plumb-ing and steel reinforcing.

The design is characterized by an open fire grill for enabling the use of kettles and pleated reinforced concrete slab which levels barbecue grill and work surface in the same hight.
