HARLEM WEEK’S “Historic Celebrations” included the NAACP 100thAnniversary. The NAACP held its national convention in NY City and celebrated at key events throughout the city including salutes in the Harlemcommunity (where the NAACP was founded.) Delegates at the conventionwere invited to some of Harlem’s fine Restaurants and Nightclubs onSaturday, July 11th including; Londel’s, Sylvia’s, Showman’s and LenoxLounge to kick off this centennial conference.

Gracie Mansion Reception Saluting HARLEM WEEK ‘s 35th AnniversaryTheme: “Historic Celebrations”Date: Thursday, July 16th - 5:30PMLocation: Gracie MansionAudience: Two thousand plus (2,000+) attendees

The Gala Reception Hosted by Mayor Bloomberg on The Great Lawn of Gracie Mansion kicked off the 35th AnnualHARLEM WEEK celebration with over 2000 VIP's, Elected Officials, City leaders, Celebrities, and others in attendance. The evening featured entertainment from The National Jazz Museum in Harlem All-Star Jazz Band thecast of the “soon to be revived hit play “Dream Girls.” The theme of the reception was “Historic Celebrations” andthe honorees for the evening included the late Duke Ellington as we celebrated the 110th Anniversary of his birth;the 50th Anniversary of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company; Renowned TV News Anchor Chuck Scarboroughwho was celebrating 35 years of service at WNBC-TV4; Legendary music producer Tommy LiPuma and the lateLatin Jazz Legend, Joe Cuba.

-HARLEM WEEK’s first public event attracted over 45,000 people to “Grants Tomb” who throughout theday enjoyed the “Relieve the Stress” exercise session. “Family Unity Day” featuring performances from local arts & culture organizations and performers. NY Gospel Caravan featuring performances from Jazzmobile’s “Gospel In The Key of Jazz” starring Eunice Newkirk as well as All-Star performances from Danny Coakley, the great Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Karen Clark Sheard andher daughter Kierra “Kiki” Sheard; the Urban Fashion Fusion Show; and a knock out “Concert Under theStars” starring Full Force, Lisa Lisa, Force MD’s with salutes to WBLS-FM, honoring their 35thAnniversary with awards to Dominic Carter and Vy Higginsen as well as saluting Motown Records 50thAnniversary.

cial award was presented to a longtime friend and supporter

of Harlem Jazz & Music Festival, Willie Walker, Building

Manager of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building

for his positive work. The music legends who performed on

this special night included The Manhattans; Ray, Goodman

& Brown, Blue Magic, Me’lisa Morgan and Chuck Jackson.

Those tributes invited the hundreds of thou-sands who attended to participate individually on the streets and sidewalks all across 135th Street from 5th to St. Nicholas Aves.The day included Live Radio Broadcasts from the KISS-FM hit program “Open Line”, and performances on the 5th Avenue stageby; Memphis the Musical, The Bill Saxton Quartet (courtesy of Jazzmobile), Casym Steel Orchestra, Seguida, Citizens ofContrary Knowledge, Apollo Heights, The Love Oasis Gospel Choir;

On the St. Nicholas Avenue main stage by; The Apollo Showcase, DJ Webstar, Al B. Sure, Kristinia DeBarge, Fabulous, ChuckJackson, Bobbi Humphrey and Ray Chew & the Crew All Star Band with a stellar closing performance by the LegendaryBrian McKnight.

Harlem 5k: Health Walk-A-Thon: 1. And they’re off as 3,000 runners begin the 1st Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run. 2. Reggie Idlett HARLEM WEEK, Mary Wittenberg, NY Road Runners, Zakia Feracho, NY Road Runners, MikePreston, HARLEM WEEK and Naomi Griffin, Harlem Hospital promote the 5K Run. 3. Runners from all over the country and beyond participated in the 5K Run. 4. Marci McCall and the team of Emblem Health Care exhibit at theWalk-A-Thon. 5.
