Daniil Trifonov, winner of the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, is probably the world’s most exciting young pianist. On his first Mariinsky recording, he joins Valery Gergiev for a scintillating performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1. Trifonov also presents a selection of recital repertoire including music by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt. This will surely be one of the top-selling releases of the holiday season.

Conductor and keyboard virtuoso Richard Egarr returns to the spotlight this month with a new album for harmonia mundi of music by Christopher Gibbons - an unjustly obscure English composer from the Renaissance who just happens to be the son of the famous Orlando Gibbons (p.9). Also on harmonia mundi, Spain’s Cuarteto Casals plays Schubert on a new disc of quartets that demonstrates two very different facets of the composer’s output (p.7). Alia Vox offers another lavish, hardcover production featuring Jordi Savall and friends, this time focusing on the story of Joan of Arc (p.4). Hyperion’s top releases this month feature works for soloist and orchestra, ranging from Bloch’s evergreen Kol Nidrei with cellist Nathalie Klein (p.11) to Messiaen’s gargantuan Turangalîla for piano and ondes martenot with Stephen Osborne (p.10). LSO Live launches a new series in August dedicated to film music. The début release features conductor Richard Kaufman leading the orchestra in selections from classic scores by the great Dmitri Tiomkin (p.21). Jazz trumpeter Raynald Colom is featured on two new releases from Jazz Village. Colom is a rising star in Europe and his music’s blend of jazz and flamenco is uniquely satisfying (p.18). Italy’s Joe Barbieri offers his own mix of light jazz and romantic pop on Respiro, the artist’s debut release for Chant du Monde (p.17).

IMPORTOn this fascinating album, Ensemble Chronochromie pays musical homage to one of the greatest poets of the 20th century — Federico Garcia Lorca. The disc’s program of works for choir, soloists and guitar includes the poet’s own compositions as well as those of his teacher Manuel de Falla in addition to works by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Ferrer. The guitar, a staple of flamenco and the music of Andalusia in general, is featured in Rodrigo’s Invocación y danza, written in honor of de Falla. The featured soloist is Benjamin Valette.

IMPORTFounded in 1989 by Fabio Biondi, Europa Galante has built an enviable international reputation for their fiery interpretations of Baroque music on period instruments. The works on this recording illustrate Telemann’s keen ability to assimilate national styles, as well as his prodigious skills in the area of musical depiction. The major works on the disc are the suites Burlesque de Quixotte and La Changeante, which exemplify Spanish and French stylistic traits. Also included are a selection of Italianate concertos, ranging from an ambitious work for three violins from Tafelmusik to the ever-popular viola concerto.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDTwenty years after his work on the soundtrack of Jacques Rivette’s movie Jeanne la

Pucelle, Jordi Savall returns to this powerful subject matter and presents a new set dedicated to the mother figure of the struggle for French independence. The music on Joan of Arc — Battles & Prisons provides the perfect atmosphere for Savall’s fresh look at this historical icon. Alongside works by composers from the time of Joan of Arc (Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Vincenet, Johannes Cornago, etc.), the set also features compositions and arrangements by Jordi Savall. The biographical program of the set is further illustrated through spoken dialogue. The accompanying 500 page, six language hardbound book is richly illustrated and provides historical perspective as well as texts and translations. The result is a vivid portrait of a troubled time.

IMPORTBlandine Verlet is one of the last living legends of the harpsichord. After a few years of absence from the recording studio, she makes her début here on the Aparté label with a program dedicated to the harpsichord music of Francois Couperin. Recorded on a sumptuous Hemsch instrument from 1751, the set includes a fascinating selection of Ordres (suites), some of which eschew the commonly used Baroque dances and substitute movements with programmatic titles such as “Les Amusements,” “Les Chinois,” “La Convalescente” and “La Visionnaire.” The cover of the disc features a highly evocative portrait of Verlet by the American painter H. Craig Hanna.

IMPORTThis new recording from Vox Suavis is a collection of music from lost traditions. It revives the legacy of generations of anonymous musicians from the various regions of Spain, presenting a folkloric music that was once common to the rural population. The melodies and flavor of this tradition, active until the mid-twentieth century, were absorbed by composers such as Falla and Rodrigo and have become part of the national style of Spanish classical music. Also included are a much earlier example of Spanish ‘popular’ music, the Medieval Cantigas de amigo by Martin Codax. The juxtaposition of these two traditions, with their contrasts and connections, demonstrates the richness and variety of both styles.

IMPORTThis historical release from First Hand features two major English orchestras and two acclaimed conductors in stereo recordings from the late 1950s, offered here for the first time on CD and for the first time ever in stereo. The recordings were transferred using original analogue session and master tapes from the EMI archive. The program includes American conductor Thomas Schippers leading the Philharmonia Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4, and English conductor Sir Eugene Goossens leading the orchestra in Scriabin’s Rêverie in the first recording of a Scriabin work ever made by a British orchestra. To conclude the disc, Goossens leads the Pro Arte Orchestra in Prokofiev’s Symphony No.1.

IMPORTHelicon Records presents another gem from the archives of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which contain recordings predominantly taken from live performances in Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium. Many of the label’s releases are historic, and nearly all feature top rank soloists and conductors. This release, featuring the acclaimed Italian conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli, couples Beethoven’s powerful Symphony No.3 with the elegant Valses nobles et sentimentales by Maurice Ravel, which are based on waltzes by Franz Schubert.

IMPORTFor their first recording of music by Franz Schubert, the members of the Cuarteto Casals perform works from two very different periods in the composer’s life. Wrongly dated upon its publication in 1830, the String Quartet No.10 in E flat Major is in fact the work of a 16-year-old musician who had just entered teachers college. It is coupled here with Schubert’s very last effort in the genre, the String Quartet No. 15 in G Major. Symphonic in organization and structure, in its scope and difficulty, it is typical of his later works. Although only thirteen years separate the two pieces, the differences in form and complexity offer the listener a fascinating example of Schubert’s rapid growth and stylistic changes.

IMPORTBorn in 1965 in Paris, Thierry Pécou began studying the piano at the age of nine and continued his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Supérieur, where he won first prizes in orchestration and composition. Regularly appointed to residencies around the world, Pécou has had a long-standing relationship with the Banff Center in Canada. An avid traveler, Pécou’s experiences abroad have been among the most fruitful sources of inspiration for his music. This is the third recording of music by Thierry Pécou on the harmonia mundi label. Latin America provides the thematic connection for the works here. Of special note is the Brazilian flavored ‘carnival concerto’ Tremendum, presented in a new transcription by Pécou for the Percussions Claviers de Lyon and the Ensemble Variances.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDBorn into an English musical family, organist & composer Christopher Gibbons (1615-1676) probably received early training from his famous father Orlando Gibbons. The young Gibbons sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal and went on to a distinguished career at Westminster Abbey and in the court of Charles II. With this showcase program of motets, anthems, fantasias for strings and organ voluntaries (all of which are receiving their first recordings), Richard Egarr, leading the Academy of Ancient Music and its choir, aims to rescue this fascinating composer from unjust obscurity.

IMPORT“The Messiaen Monster,” ridiculed by critics at its premiere — in the best tradition of works of genius — is now, “established as one of the most astonishing classics of the twentieth century,” as Nigel Simeone writes in the booklet

of this brilliant new release. The joyful generosity of the orchestral writing and kaleidoscopic nature of the musical invention make Turangalîla one of Messiaen’s most characteristic and appealing works, considered by many to be his masterpiece. As well as the distinctive sound of the ondes martenot, the other striking feature is the virtuoso piano part — it is in some ways a concerto, although the sheer scale of the orchestral contribution belies that specific title. Rarely has it been more explosively performed than here, with an acknowledged living master of Messiaen’s piano music, Steven Osborne, at the keyboard.

IMPORTHyperion presents a dazzling orchestral disc of music from the Jewish tradition of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Bruch’s Kol Nidrei is one of the most well-loved works in the cello repertoire. The descending opening phrase of the cello line is instantly recognizable: a universal, extraordinarily expressive utterance. The main part of the disc comprises the works for cello and orchestra by Ernest Bloch, all part of his ‘Jewish cycle.’ The other large-scale work for cello and orchestra, Voice in the Wilderness, is of a darker hue. Both works reveal a composer whose works should be firmly in the canon of twentieth-century symphonic writing. The cellist here is Natalie Clein, a celebrated figure in British musical life since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1995 and now a formidable artist.

IMPORTThis release presents music associated with the renaissance master Josquin Des Prez, a composer who towers above all others in the first part of the sixteenth century. Numerous works that were attributed to him have now been proven to be by his contemporaries and successors, including the central work on this recording, Jean Richafort’s expansive and beautiful Requiem. It is performed with affecting clarity by the all-male vocal group Cinquecento, whose many previous discs of Renaissance repertoire for Hyperion have garnered the highest critical praise. Booklet notes by Stephen Rice, an acknowledged authority on this repertoire, place the music in its historical context and decode the mysteries of its composition.

The Clarinet Trio Op.11 is heard here in Rysanov’s own arrangement with the viola replacing the clarinet. Beethoven’s early Serenade for string trio Op.8 of 1797 was arranged for viola and piano in 1804 as Op.42. The work’s “Theme, Variations and March,” in a version by William Primrose, is offered here. IMPORT / SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe latest in Praga’s series of historic remasterings is a tribute to three outstanding Russian artists — conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky, choirmaster Alexander Yurlov and the great bass Ivan Petrov. The repertoire is choral music of Dmitri Shostakovich written during the era of Josef Stalin. The oratorio The Song of the Forests was written in 1949 to celebrate the forestation of the Russian steppes following the end of World War II. The cantata The Sun Shines on Our Motherland, with texts by Soviet poet laureate Evgeni Dolmatovsky, was premiered in 1952 on the 35th anniversary of the October Revolution. Ten Poems on Texts by Revolutionary Poets was Shostakovich’s first work for a cappella chorus.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDAlthough Dvorák’s string quartets are among the finest ever written, other than the famous “American” quartet, they remain largely unfamiliar to most listeners. This is surprising, as most of the quartets are brilliant and accessible, full of distinctive melodies and passionate invention. This Hybrid SACD from Praga featuring the Zemlinsky Quartet presents two of the composer’s quartets, Nos.9 and 13. The ninth quartet, in the key of D minor, was completed in late 1877 and dedicated to Brahms. Technically brilliant, the work has a melancholy flavor that has been attributed to Dvorák’s memories of the death of his daughter. The G major thirteenth quartet, one of the composer’s last two efforts in the genre, was the first quartet he completed following his return from America.

IMPORTTahra’s series of historic remasterings of recordings by the great conductor Hermann Scherchen has won the label many accolades. Scherchen recorded an unusually wide range of repertoire, from the baroque to the contemporary. His Mahler recordings, made before Mahler became a part of the standard repertoire, were especially influential; so too were his recordings of Bach and Handel, which helped pave the way for the period performance-practice movement. This 1959 recording of Bach’s B-minor Mass features the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Wiener Akademie Kammerchor.

IMPORTFile in: JazzOwls Talk is a superb encounter between young French saxophonist Alexandra Grimal and three venerable jazz masters. The album was recorded in New York in 2009 and originally released in France on the Marge label, but now sees a proper international release from Aparté. Grimal composed or co-composed nine of the album’s fifteen tracks. She described the sessions as, “An incredible encounter. A moment suspended in time. A waking dream… or the awakening of a dream?” Lee Konitz, Gary Peacock and the late, great Paul Motian need no introduction, and not surprisingly, their work here is exemplary.

IMPORTFile in: JazzOn her début album Gotta Do It, singer and composer Cecilia Bertolini offers up a glowing album of jazz-folk-pop that is rich with emotion. Free of affectation, her voice and music reveal a sublime talent that is ripe for discovery. Bertolini is backed by a team of musicians that are among the most highly regarded on the French jazz scene. Pianist and arranger Armel Dupas is joined by guitarist Olivier Louvel, drummer Karl Jannuska, bassist Manuel Marches and trumpeter Sylvain Gontard.

chant du monde

IMPORTFile in: World JazzPossessing an elegant and romantic sophistication reminiscent of Michael Bublé, the music of Italian vocalist Joe Barbieri should find a ready audience in the North American market. In recent years, Barbieri’s musical popularity has been rising fast in Italy, winning over a legion of fans. Barbieri’s new album Respiro was recorded in Naples in an apartment used by Vittorio de Sica for scenes from two of his most important films - Matrimonio all’italiana and L’Oro di Napoli. Given the cinematic quality of Barbieri’s songs, this detail is more than a mere anecdote. The album features selections from Barbieri’s two original studio albums and its musical flavors run the gamut from smooth jazz to bossa nova to Italian pop. Backed by a stellar team of side men, Respiro exemplifies the best of cocktail jazz (flavored with a dash of world music) and its gentle ebb and flow are nothing short of intoxicating.

IMPORTFile in: JazzAs a young prodigy, French trumpeter Raynald Colom caught the attention of jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove and Kenny Barron, who helped support Colom’s musical studies. In 2000 he moved to Barcelona where he started freelancing, working with musicians such as Randy Becker, Jesse Davis and Horacio Fumero. During this period, Colom also traveled throughout the US and Latin America as part of Manu Chao’s “Clandestino” tour. Currently, Colom is a star of the Spanish jazz scene, both in concert and in the studio. Rise, Colom’s new album for Jazz Village, is jazz at its most modern. It blends influences as disparate as Bartók, Coltrane, Bix Biederbecke, hip-hop and even French chanson into a rich and flavorful jazz stew that defies categorization. Colom is also considered the premier trumpet player of the Flamenco elite. His 2009 album Evocación blends jazz and Flamenco in a heady mix of improvisations. The album also features the talents of Flamenco legends Chicuelo and Rosario la Tremendita.

Young lions of the NY jazz scene

DOMESTICFile in: JazzRick Germanson has been quickly emerging as one of the most in-demand pianists on the New York scene. On this live album, Germanson is joined by jazz legend Dr. Eddie Henderson, bassist Paul Gill and drummer Lewis Nash for a brisk and hard swinging, straight-ahead set. A rising star in the guitar world, Lage Lund has been building a reputation for himself as an original and innovative voice. Joined by Pete Rende on piano, Ben Street on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums, this live date is a lively combination of cutting edge originals. Jesse Davis was one of the original “young lions” of the 1980’s. On this date he is joined by Ryan Kisor on trumpet, Peter Washington on bass, Spike Wilner on piano and Billy Drummond on drums. Veteran tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama and his trio Bop Juice offer a live set of his originals and standards and demonstrate his gruff, hard bop approach to the music. Lalama’s lyrical, blues based phrasing are both enticing and compelling.

POP

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: Pop / RockOriginally released by Lost Highway Records in 2008, Just A Little Lovin’ is Shelby Lynne’s stirring, emphatic tribute to the late British singer Dusty Springfield. In contrast to the thickly scored originals, Lynne’s recordings of many of the covers are presented in comparatively spare arrangements, favoring acoustic guitars and pianos. In addition to the Springfield tracks, Lynne also covers Tony Joe White’s “Willie and Laura Mae Jones.” PopMatters’ review proclaimed that the album, “manages to go to emotional places that remain unattainable to your run-of-the-mill pop vocalists.” Some of Dusty’s biggest hits are covered here including “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me,” “I Only Want To Be With You,” and “How Can I Be Sure.”

SOUNDTRACK

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFile in: JazzFor the first release in a new series from LSO Live focusing on classic film music, LSO Live presents a selection of the greatest scores by the legendary Dimitri Tiomkin. The London Symphony Orchestra’s association with the film industry stretches all the way back to Arthur Bliss’s music for Things to Come, the first time an orchestra had recorded a movie soundtrack. More recently, the LSO has recorded music for major blockbusters including Star Wars and Harry Potter. Russian-born Tiomkin was one of Hollywood’s most highly regarded and versatile composers, who could create memorable scores for almost any story. Tiomkin received a staggering 22 Academy Award nominations, winning four awards. This new recording features veteran conductor Richard Kaufman leading the orchestra in selections from High Noon, The High and the Mighty, The Alamo, Hitchcock’s Dial ‘M’ for Murder and the theme song for Rawhide.
