Tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Paul Lewis conclude their acclaimed Schubert triptych with this revelatory account of Schwanengesang, the third and last of the great Schubert cycles, collected and published after the composer’s death. Auf dem Strom for tenor, horn & piano, and the gently hopeful song Die Sterne complete the programme.

“Singer and pianist are perfectly matched in temperament and musicality, and every note has been lovingly considered…A great schöne Müllerin.” Rupert Christiansen, Daily Telegraph, 31 July 2010“I cannot think of a journey that leads more faithfully to the cold comfort of its end. And when we get there in this performance, what an end it is!” John Steane, CD OF THE MONTH, Gramophone, November 2009

In order to carry out this exciting project, Javier Perianes and Josep Pons returned to the original sources: manuscripts held in the Archivo Manuel de Falla in Granada. A rising star both in his native Spain and, more recently, much further afield, the young pianist Javier Perianes was in London, in January, for his debut concert with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, recorded here. The repertoire is a piece Perianes knows well, de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and the conductor is someone he knows and respects hugely, Josep Pons.Perianes continues to champion neglected Spanish composers and his most recent CD, of sonatas by Manuel Blasco de Nebra, has been a minor revelation. LTD EDITION Bonus DVD: Perianes at the de Falla archive

“This was a programme born for marketing cliché: banish the winter blues by bathing in Latin American/Iberian warmth. And it turned out to be true, by virtue of an unexpected watershed. How did the BBC Symphony strings manage to be first among the London orchestras to slip into something truly sensual...Pons again knew exactly what to do with the ever-headier variations of the final Jota, taken at quite a lick from the start, and the orchestra let down its newly acquired glossy raven locks with ideal exuberance.” the artsdesk.com

ADVERTISED IN GRAMOPHONEHMC902077 Ombra Cara“Bejun Mehta’s disc towers above the other Handel ‘medley’ recordings currently fashionable among opera stars. Musicality and a brilliant intelligence emanate from every track. Mehta and René Jacobs, by contrast, achieve a perfect meeting of musical minds…This is not just another aria collection, but a celebration of genius, in composition and performance alike.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2010 *****/*****

“Recital discs devoted to Handel may abound at the moment, but few if any have been as comprehensively impressive as this one. …It’s wonderful singing and on this evidence, Mehta’s beauty of tone and musical intelligence confirm his position in the highest echelon of contemporary countertenors, alongside the likes of David Daniels and Andreas Scholl.”The Guardian, 24 December 2011 *****

DOWN BY THE SALLEY GARDENS Works by VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, FINzI, HOWELLS, QUILTER

Bejun Mehta (countertenor); Julius Drake (piano)

This programme offers a vivid and varied cross-section of English song, ranging from the Edwardian aesthetic of Quilter and early Vaughan Williams to the intensely expressive style of Howells and Finzi. The Purcell realisations by Britten and Tippett, meanwhile, are products of two great 20th-century composers engaging with their musical heritage. In all these different styles, Bejun Mehta shows the same verbal and vocal mastery that won such acclaim for his debut Handel recital on harmonia mundi.

Inspired by the much-loved service of ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ given every Christmas Eve, this recording presents the Nativity story told through plainchant, motets, 17th Century dialogues and traditional folk carols. Paul Hillier leads Theatre of Voice and Ars Nova Copenhagen in music he has culled and arranged from Italian, German, Danish, English and American sources.Their previous disc of music inspired by texts: Stories – Berio & Friends received rave reviews.

THE CHRISTMAS STORYTheatre of Voices, Ars Nova Copenhagen / Paul Hillier

“Paul Hillier’s fearless vocal ensemble abandon conventionally notated music for a clamorous, divert-ing programme of 20th-century adventures in sound, shaped by written texts, graphic designs or the detritus of spoken conversation. Biggest and best is Luciano Berio’s magisterial A-Ronne, an epic tap-estry of texts, alphabet letters, cries and whispers. Funniest is Sheldon Frank’s cliché compost As I was Saying, with Cathy Berberian’s classic Stripsody not far behind. A couple of duller items too, but you can always feast on the singers’ incredible precision and flair.” Geoff Brown, The Times, 14 May

“worth acquiring for their wonderfully slick A-Ronne alone.” Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 29 April

One of the seminal American musical traditions, the spiritual is dramatic, powerful, and profoundly beautiful — the bedrock for much of American music that was to follow. Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare explore here the genre’s wide range of expression and its eloquence in speaking to universal aspects of the human condition.

“One of America’s leading vocal ensembles” International Record Review

HMU807518 REQUIEM Conspirare **** “Herbert Howells wrote his Requiem in 1936 after the loss of his nine-year-old son to polio, and suppressed it until 1980 “for personal reasons”. In the hands of the 34-voice professional Texan choir Conspirare, it sounds a work of infinite tenderness, creating an effect like a cushioned, silken, compassionate embrace. Howells’s texts bear little relationship to the familiar Requiem texts. The 1922 Requiem by Ildebrando Pizzetti is textbook true, and offers a persuasive blend of conservative 20th-century style and Renaissance practice. This disc of unfailingly beautiful singing also includes more recent and altogether slighter pieces by Eric Whitacre, Donald Grantham, Stephen Paulus and Eliza Gilkyson.” Michael Dervan, Irish Times, 31 July 2009

The final release in Valery Gergiev’s acclaimed Mahler cycle features the composer’s Symphony No 9, recorded at the Barbican in March 2011.Mahler’s wrote his Ninth Symphony during a time of great personal suffering and heartache. This is reflected in the music, at times manic and fierce, at others delicate and serene, as it explores many emotions and ultimately concludes with the heart-stopping coda of the Adagio, seemingly conveying the composer’s acceptance of his own mortality. In addition to his recordings of Mahler’s symphonies, Gergiev’s other recent releases on LSO Live have included acclaimed recordingsof music by Debussy, Ravel and Rachmaninov as well as Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet which recently won Disc of the Year at the BBC Music Magazine Awards.Forthcoming releases on the Mariinsky label, which is managed on behalf of the Mariinsky Theatre by LSO Live, include Donizetti’sLucia di Lammermoor, conducted by Valery Gergiev and featuring Natalie Dessay in the title role alongside Piotr Beczala and Ilya Bannik. The Mariinsky label also releases its first DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs in October.

CONCERT REVIEWS“from the rosy vein struck by the strings to the honed gestures of the woodwind, here was an orchestra at one with itself and its Director” The Guardian

“Gergiev’s reading was both valid and deeply moving. Finally all tears were wiped away, all coughing silenced, in a breathless, peerlessly executed coda [Adagio]” Evening Standard

“There’s nothing on the classical circuit that quite compares to the full Valery Gergiev experience. Gergiev’s pacing of the Adagio ... felt absolutely right. And the LSO fiddles played majestically for him” The Times

“….Maltman’s ardent, impulsive, intensely “lived” performance, partnered and inspired by the ever-illuminating Johnson, should be heard by anyone who loves the cycle.”

So wrote Richard Wigmore in Gramophone Magazine of Christopher Maltman’s Die Schöne Müllerin. Released in April 2011, this was the first release of his complete Schubert song cycles project and was awarded an Editor’s Choice.Recorded over a series of live dates, Maltman has collaborated with one of the world’s foremost authorities on the lieder repertoire, accompanist Graham Johnson. Maltman’s teaming with Johnson is a triumphant partnership with Maltman giving the accolade that he is the “definitive accompanist who leaves no stone unturned”. Die Winterreise will be followed by Schwanengesang in 2012, the live performance of which was critically-applauded.

Maltman’s decision to undertake these substantial recordings as a live project was a considered choice: “the live recording experience is where the real beauty lies; the little points, the little imperfections, the emotional stress, give the performance an organic feel, a rawness. It dials everything back to the most important element – the live performance.”

Turandot from the Verona Arena: Franco Zeffirelli’s epic production of Puccini’s masterpiece.

In its 88th year, the prestigious Verona Arena Festival honoured the legendary Italian stage director Franco Zeffirelli. Zeffirelli delivered an opulent staging af the fairy-tale story of the Chinese Princess Turandot, who will only marry a prince capable of solving her riddles. The Russian soprano Maria Guleghina proved a brilliant Turandot, whilst tenor Salvatore Licitra’s trump card is his imposingly radiant voice of which he remains in sovereign control even in the role’s much-feared tessitura. The soprano Tamar Iveri is a beautiful and sensitive Liù. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Verona Arena are conducted by Maestro Giuliano Carella.

“Gold and more gold. It is the precious metal to dominate in the Forbidden City created by Franco Zeffirelli for the new, lavish setting of Turandot, which opened June 18 the opera season at the Arena of Verona. An epic production, with huge processions, sumptuous costumes and technology... After the blue and gray moon of the first act, the court and the appearance of Turandot (played by Maria Guleghina international star), including pagodas, statues and gold banners, give a glance awesome ripping applause.” Corriere della Serra

The 2008 Salzburg Festival production of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka was outstanding even by the Festival’s high artistic standards. Its exceptional nature was due in part to the fact that in the pit the Cleveland Orchestra was appearing for the first time as an opera orchestra in Salzburg. The high expectations raised by the orchestra and its Music Director, Franz Welser-Möst, were fully met, and even in the live recording of the opening night made by Austrian Radio, the conductor’s genuinely dramatic approach to the work is never less than gripping. The fairytale narrative gains in psychological focus and depth, aided and abetted by the team of soloists headed by Camilla Nylund as Rusalka and Piotr Beczala as the Prince. To the role of the water nymph, Nylund brings a beautiful lyric soprano voice that retains its focus and penetrating power even in the score’s most dramatic outbursts, while the bright tenor voice of Piotr Beczala produces a convincing vocal portrait of the hapless heroine’s inconstant lover, following her decision to enter the world of mortals. The remaining roles were cast from strength, notably the admonitory figure of the Water Goblin, taken here by Alan Held, whose powerful Wagnerian bass-baritone lends the role an impressive profile; Birgit Remmert, with her dark-hued, impressively full-toned voice and Emily Magee’s burnished soprano, with its brilliant upper register. Particularly gratifying in a Salzburg Festival production is the casting of minor roles with promising young singers including Eva Liebau as the Turnspit, Adam Plachetka as the Gamekeeper and the three well-modulated wood nymphs of Anna Prohaska, Stephanie Atasanov and Hannah Esther Minutillo. Appearing alongside this team of singers is the Vienna State Opera Chorus on outstanding form. All in all, then, it comes as no surprise to know that the response to the musical side of this production was extremely positive, a response which it is hoped will be repeated in the case of the present live recording.[The nightmarishly dark production of Dvorak’s fairytale opera Rusalka by prize-winning directors Sergio Morabito and Jossi Wieler divided the audience at its first-ever staging at the Salzburg Festival.]

With its prologue and three festive acts, its exotic dances and its virtuoso arias in Italian, Le Carnaval de Venise was one of the most original experiences to be had in musical drama at the time, one which was to earn Campra the reputation as the new maestro of French opera, as well as of being the musical eulogist for the Regency. In a magisterial act of conflation, this composer blends the styles of Lully, Lalande, Monteverdi and Cavalli and manages also to foreshadow Handel and Rameau. He dreamt up a multi-hued score, capable of recapturing in Paris both the carnival spirit in general and that of the legendary Venice in particular. With this Carnaval de Venise Le Concert Spirituel and Hervé Niquet add a new title to their tireless work of recovering operatic jewels from those prodigious 17th and 18th centuries, amongst which we can mention here Proserpine by Lully, Sémélé by Marais and Andromaque by Grétry, all released on Glossa.

“Hervé Niquet’s performance with his Concert Spirituel, which seems to be the first ever on disc, has real buoyancy and expressive flexibility.” The Guardian, (Sémélé)

“A fascinating release, operatic archaeology at its best.” Rodney Milnes, Opera, January 2011 (Andromaque)

After the premiere of Artaserse, the Real Compañía Opera de Cámara addresses another unpublished work by Terradellas, Sesostri, a great find for all fans of opera, with the most wonderful cast.Sesostri is the last opera composed by Barcelona-born Doménec Terradellas, who lived between 1713 and 1751, dying just after the premiere of this opera in Rome. His career developed mainly in Italy, and in Spain today he is mostly unknown. Sesostri had its Barcelona premiere in 1754 but did not return there until December 2010, when it was offered in concert and without its recitatives at the Auditori.

Sesostri seems to have been a Pharaoh in the 12th century BC, briefly mentioned by Herodotus and citing a bitter struggle between two brothers in ancient Egypt. This serves as the basis for the libretto of this opera, which is both remarkably complicated and highly implausible! The protagonist Sesostri, Korean soprano Sunhae Im, not only gives the title to the opera but also has a lot to sing, no less than 5 arias, a trio and the short final ensemble, in short, a remarkable performance.

RCOC08003 Artaserse“This is the first complete recording of an opera by Terradellas and it is truly tantalizing…there’s more than enough here to keep eighteenth-century opera enthusiasts very happy indeed.” International Record Review – July/August 2009

LIGETI Atmosphères, SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 10 Op. 93Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester / David Afkham (conductor)Salzburg Festival 2010

Among the new generation of young conductors who have proved an international sensation, Berlin-born David Afkham (b.1983) stands out.Not only was he he first conductor to receive a scholarship from the Bernard Haitink Fund for Young Talents, he is also the first to win the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award. At the final Festival concert in 2010 he conducted both the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, of which he is currently the assistant conductor, and the London Symphony Orchestra, seeing off more than 80 rivals, with the two 20th-century classics here. This live recording with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra demonstrates David Afkham’s ability to handle a wide range of sonorities. Ligeti’s Atmosphères divides up the orchestral voices in extremely varied ways, achieving a multi-dimensionality that finds perfect expression in Afkham’s performance. By contrast, Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony dates from the years of the political ‘thaw’ in the Soviet Union. David Afkham’s interpretation is notable for its overview and for its sense of moderation with no hankering after empty effect. That his realisation of this programme is so well thought through augurs well for the future and makes one curious to see how his career will develop as a conductor. In 2008 David Afkham won the first prize of the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition and became the assistant conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and assistant of Valery Gergiev Afkham has already appeared in the United States with some of that country’s leading orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, whilst his European engagements include appearances with the zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and the Orchestre National de Radio France. It scarcely needs to be added that many other orchestras of international standing have already signed him up since his victory in Salzburg.

“the big news is that David Afkham is on his way up.” Mark Swed, LA Times

In the first recording devoted entirely to Judith Weir’s choral music, the Choir of Gonville & Caius explores her evolving relationship with the medium, from her earliest liturgical commission to the most recent, which was premiered in 2009. Also included in this comprehensive collection are several secular pieces and her two organ works, which are now established classics of the repertoire. The athleticism, intensity and clarity that are hallmarks of the choir’s singing are ideally suited to Weir’s strikingly original, approachable and fascinating music. Judith Weir’s new BBC commission Stars, Night, Music and Light launched the First Night of the Proms on 15th July.

Sara Mingardo is one of the few rare authentic contralto voices on today’s music scene, and last year she won the prestigious Premio Abbiati 2010 as ‘Best Italian Singer’. Here she wonderfully interprets, in a thrilling World Première Recording, lyrical pieces for voice and piano by Guido Alberto Fano, with Aldo Orvieto at the piano.G. A. Fano was born in Padua in 1875 and he died exactly 50 years ago in a small town in Friuli. His approach to song seems akin to that of Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968), who spoke of a new interest among Italian composers for vocal chamber music: “Incipit vita nova”, he proclaimed, with Dantesque tones he greeted the salvation of the genre from the monopoly enjoyed by the previous generation, first and foremost, the huge output of Abruzzo-born Francesco Tosti. A “new life” on which Pizzetti embarked by shedding the yolk of pleasant melody and conventional cadential formulae. These little known but highly attractive lyrical pieces, composed on immortal masterpieces by two great Italian poets, Giosuè Carducci (1835-1907) and Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912), clearly show Fano’s distance from the precepts of late 19th-century drawing-room song.

WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln / Eivind Aadland (conductor)

This second volume, in a five-part series of the complete symphonic works with Eivind Aadland and the WDR Sinfonieorchester contains the works for string orchestra: a genre which Grieg mastered like no other, chiefly arrangements of songs and piano pieces. Where the song arrangements of the Elegiac Melodies Op. 34 and the Two Melodies Op. 53 were a form of ‘export edition’ for non-Scandinavian countries (where they were extremely popular, even during Grieg’s lifetime), the famous suite From Holberg’s Time Op. 40 is a homage to Ludvig Holberg, the caustic ‘Molière of the North’, whose 200th birthday was celebrated in Bergen in 1884. For this occasion, Grieg composed a suite ‘in the old style’ on dance forms of the late baroque (Holberg’s own time) without, however, denying his own, romantic style. The late Nordic Melodies Op. 63 were written by the 51-year-old Grieg who was touring internationally as a conductor and who, in the absence of major works, broadened his repertoire with smaller pieces. “The flavour of this music is in my blood”, says the conductor Eivind Aadland, who grew up in Grieg’s hometown of Bergen and who today is an international artist. Aadland was chief conductor and artistic director of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra from 2003 until 2010 and has also worked with many other Scandinavian, European and international orchestras. He initially studied the violin with Yehudi Menuhin. From 1981 until 1989 he was concert master of the Bergen Philharmonic and from 1987 until 1997 music director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra. He subsequently devoted himself fully to his conducting career and studied with Jorma Panula.

Best known today for the ballet La fille mal gardée and the overture to the opera Zampa, Hérold also wrote four piano concertos. In 1810 he won first prize in a piano competition with one of his own compositions, which had never been done before. One of the judges remarked: “This piece is full of flaws, but I see great things ahead for him.” In 1812 he won the Prix de Rome and whilst in Rome, during the spring of 1813 he composed his first symphony, which all Prix de Rome winners were required to do in order to show their progression in studies. In 1815 he moved from Rome to Naples for health reasons. While there he composed several pieces including his second symphony and three string quartets. Thereafter his output was mainly for the opera or ballet. Here in a disc that complements Glossa’s Prix de Rome series, also with Hervé Niquet, Frédéric Neuburger plays concertos 2, 3 and 4. The Sinfonia Varsovia grew out of an expanded Polish Chamber Orchestra, after concerts with the late Yehudi Menuhin, who became their first guest conductor. Even Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter were in awe of the young Lazar Berman, who astounded the world with performances of superhuman dimensions. However his talent was long kept a locked up secret in the former Soviet Union, before he was permitted totravel abroad. His appearances in the West were sensational, resulting in concerts with von Karajan and recordings for DG. The live recordings on this 2-CD set span from 1950 to 1972 and catch him at the peak of his powers, and these were gigantic. His performance of the Sonata, Dante Sonata and especially the selection from the Transcendental Etudes shows not only his phenomenal technique but also his great sensitivity, beauty of tone (even in the biggest fortes) and innate poetry. Two major piano works of Robert Schumann played by Russian pianist Naum Grubert.“For all his virtuosity, Grubert interprets music more as a philosopher and a thinker.” (Frankfurter Allgemeine zeitung). This quote characterises the unique musicianship of Grubert, who in Schumann’s music delves deeper layers of characters and emotions then there is on the surface of the mere notes and glittering pianism. Grubert finds poetry in every phrase, no details escapes his imagination and his deep and penetrating touch reveals a world of unheard, magical sounds. Grubert, born in 1951, was taught by the famous Prof. Gutman, and was a laureate of the Tchaikovsky Competition. He played with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra de la Suisse Romande under such conductors like Evgeny Svetlanov, Paavo Berglund, Valery Gergiev and Stanislav Skrowaczewski.

Frederic Rzewski (born in 1938) is a prominent composer of the American avantgarde (his teachers being Milton Babbitt, Walter Piston) whose works have a strong socio-historical background, inspired by his deep political conscience. One of his best known works is the colossal set of piano variations on a Chilean protest song by Sergio Ortega: The People United will Never be Defeated. This fascinatingset of 36 variations explores new pianistic features, new sonorities, use of extreme registers and improvisational elements (whistling of the performer, slamming the piano lid...) which present a huge challenge to the pianist. This recording is a Classic, previously on Music & Arts, as pianist Ursula Oppens is the dedicatee of this work, and the ideal interpreter, given her specialisation in 20th Century piano music.

The relatively short artistic collaboration between Igor Stravinsky and Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes resulted in works that remained consistently popular with audiences the world over for nearly a hundred years. This new 3 CD set of live orchestral recordings by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales – made in their home venue of BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff – captures Stravinsky’s three great ballet scores (The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring) as well as works by fellow Ballet Russes composers Poulenc (Les Biches) and Liadov (Baba-Yaga, The Enchanted Lake and Kikimora).

“This fresh sounding live recording from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Thierry Fischer, the first made in the BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, certainly has a sense of occasion about it, with the audience erupting as the finale chorale [Firebird] reaches its exultant conclusion.” BBC Music Magazine“… [Thierry Fischer’s] Petrushka, notably beautiful, is graciously touching rather than violent or eruptive, the clean-textured, superbly detailed playing from the BBC National Orchestra Wales reminds us just how startlingly original Stravinsky’s sonorities” The Guardian

“ … you should buy this for the generous, unusual coupling with Francis Poulenc’s rowdy, witty 1924 ballet Les biches …. As with the Rite, the performance is immaculate.” The Arts Desk

Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray represent the two leading figures from the world of the French viola da gamba with – in the opinion of a contemporary in Hubert Le Blanc – the former playing like an angel and the latter like a devil. And fiendishly difficult to play, of course, are many of the pieces brought together in the volume prepared by Jean-Baptiste Forqueray (‘le fils’) in 1747, two years afterthe death of his father, and drawn from sketches and memories. These Pièces de viole avec la basse continuë, dedicated to Princess Henriette of France (the younger of Louis XV’s twin daughters), serve as a final and grand homage to an instrument, which after 70 years of an absolute rule was by that time starting to cede territory to the cello...Glossa now bring back into circulation, in a newly-prepared edition, the recording which introduced Paolo Pandolfo to the label, where he was joined by a starry group of fellow performers in Guido Balestracci, Rolf Lislevand, Eduardo Egüez and Guido Morini. The exemplary texts of Edmond Lemaître and Pierre Jaquier further enhance a legendary album, one which confirmed Pandolfo, now some 15 years ago, as one of the greatest viola da gambists of our own present time.

The first part in a series of four – two secular and two sacred – this recording sets out to explore different facets of a cappella choral music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Volume 1 takes its name from one of the nine cycles of secular music presented here. In this panorama of works, the word, through poetry, is central to musical creation; it becomes the subject of play, with the composers appropriating it and translating it into music. Alongside famous cycles from the repertoire, Ens Aedes have chosen to record a work commissioned by them from Philippe Hersant, as well as several cycles by other composers who are still active. These cycles set words by William Shakespeare, Joseph von Eichendorff and Paul Éluard; the listener will also discover (or rediscover) poems by Charles d’Orléans, Louise Labé and Henry Felix.

When you pick up a modern edition of Jacob van Eyck’s Der Fluyten Lust-hof, a work from the mid-17th century, you see a blizzard of notes for solo recorder, going on for hundreds of pages, divided among what, for most of us, are a slew of incomprehensible Dutch titles. When you hear Van Eyck’s music live or recorded, that is usually what you hear too: several minutes of solo recorder, accelerating relentlessly. Frans Bruggen’s brilliant 1960s performances of a half-dozen greatest hits set the pattern for a generation, then Marion Verbruggen, now...

The conductor Leo Blech and the pianist Julian von Károlyi, whose live performance of the Chopin Second Piano Concerto given at the Berlin Titania Palast in 1950 is documented on this CD, are nowadays ranked amongst the greatest but unjustly forgotten interpreters of the 20th century. Blech, whose sophisticated mature reading of Schubert’s Symphony in C major, The Great can also be admired on this recording, had been a leading German conductor since 1908 until he was pushed out of his post by the Nazis in 1937, due to his Jewish faith, and was forced to emigrate. Károlyi, a leading pianist of his generation in the 1950s, was later accused of being routine-driven.His masterful Chopin interpretation demonstrates, however, that his ability to combine musicianship and virtuosity is exemplary even today.

Anton Bruckner’s Third Symphony - the first fully valid example of his extraordinary symphonic idea: a combination of resplendent sounds and church service, as well as demonic romanticism and the comforting belief in heaven. “I was just going from the theatre building to Wahnfried at 5 o’clock when the master of all masters hurried towards me with open arms, embraced me and said: ‘Dear friend, the dedication is justified, you are giving me great pleasure with the work’.” (Anton Bruckner)

Anton Bruckner’s Third Symphony pays tribute to the deeply revered Richard Wagner, to whom it is also dedicated. The live recording of the concert on 30th January 1970 in the Herkules-Saal of the Munich Residence with Rafael Kubelik and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is available again, now in CD format.

Really excellent sound and some extremely enthusiastic applause. Mirella Parutto began her career at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as Elena in Boito’s Mefistofele, in 1958, and the following year, appeared for the first time at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, as Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera. She then sang widely in Italy, appearing in Florence, Naples, Parma, Genoa, Palermo, Trieste, Venice, Cagliari, Catania, etc. Her roles included Matilde in Guglielmo Tell, Abigail in Nabucco, Leonora in both Il trovatore and La forza del destino, the title role in Aida, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, etc.In 1965, she turned to mezzo-soprano roles, as you can hear intimations of here. This distinguished recording has all the principals in freshest voice and includes the oft-cut ‘Ciel!... non m’inganna’ [track 18 CD2]

The unusual musical and spatial arrangement of Valerio Sannicandros composition “Ius Lucis” for two ensembles playing in separate rooms sets a double perspective at the centre of its construction. Two chamber ensembles with different instruments simultaneously perform the palindromic (mirror-like) total score in two separate rooms, and the audience switches from one room to the other after the piece has been played in each. In addition to the playing of the live instrumentalists, the live-electronically processed result of their performance is also made audible. In both “perspectives” achieved by the spatially separate performances, the music produces a completely different effect, though the loudspeakers repeatedly emit familiar snatches, which then disappear again.

Between 1980 and 1997, artists presented a panoply of exhibitions, installations, performances, and concerts, and engaged in lively debate on art theory, at Het Apollohuis in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Under the direction of founders Paul and Hélène Panhuysen, the building became an important centre for an avant-garde that bridged the visual arts and music. Since 2009, the archives of Het Apollohuis have been located at zKM in Karlsruhe, where scholars are examining, documenting and preserving this valuable store of sound, text and pictorial materials. This edition presents excerpts from previously unpublished concert and performance recordings of important artists who appeared during the lifespan of Het Apollohuis. The first CD contains recordings of body related works including self built and invented instruments; the second CD is dedicated to – in the broadest sense of the word – sampling techniques being developped in the 1980s and 1990s.

About the complete recording of Hans G Helms’ Fa:m’ Ahniesgwow: ‘Music that points to the future has to have the prerequisites that it provides a musical analysis of the past, that it is aware of the present, and that it turns these two layers into something that, with regard to structure, comes close to a better society.’ (Hans G Helms)

Hans G Helms’ book “Fa:m’ Ahniesgwow” which has become a legend of the avant-garde moves in the borderland between literature and musical composition. In his work the author critically examines the structures of the continuing fascistic society and takes a look at the era of economically miraculous consumer stress. Helms observes social and politico-economic phenomena, combines the things he has seen and experienced with the parameters of semantics, phonetics and grammar, using – strictly speaking – the language to compose. The integral recording of Helms’ opus was accomplished by the SprachKunstTrio [speech art trio] sprechbohrer in 2009 after several years of examination of the work – sixty years after Helms had completed his work on the book. Due to intensive communication with Hans G Helms, a high degree of interpretive authenticity has been achieved. sprechbohrer have realised the integral recording of the 90-minute work in collaboration with the Hessischer Rundfunk; it was broadcast for the first time on the channel hr2-Kultur on 30 August 2009.

‘The precise and meticulous manner in which sprechbohrer, thanks to their specialist knowledge and commitment, have analysed and realised the intentions of my structures created in the intermediate realm between speech and music has not escaped the notice of the vast majority of the attentively listening and responding audience.’ (Hans G Helms)

SPECIAL FEATURES: • Includes 5.1 surround mix (DTS and Dolby) and dedicated stereo mix• Finding Sanctuary: Roger Reynolds Making Modern Music, a documentary on the composer (29:36)

Roger Reynolds’ Sanctuary for percussion ensemble is conceived to be both visually and sonically dramatic. Composed for a spatially distributed ensemble and live electronics, the work makes spectacular use of DVD’s surround sound capabilities.Sanctuary is a malleable work intended to evolve with the experience of its creators (composer, performers, and technicians) and conceived so as to adapt to, and capitalise upon, the changing resources and contexts within which it is realised. Sanctuary continued to evolve as new performance spaces were encountered, new performers added their talents, new interpretations emerged, and new technologies were employed to realise and document performances. To chronicle this evolution, three versions of Sanctuary with full video are presented on this specially-priced double DVD set:

    1) A complete controlled studio performance which visually focuses on the direct source of the action, allowing the viewer to see details often lost to the audience. Quite different from traditional concert documentation, each camera was given its own staff/score notating the primary concerns of camera angle and proximity. A 100-page, 7-staff (4 percussion, 3 cameras) score was then used as a constant reference during the filming of this unique version. (74:15)

    2) A complete live performance from Washington, DC’s National Gallery of Art, with the percussionists spatially distributed through the Gallery’s dramatic interior. (78:33)

    3) Excerpts from the outdoor sunset performance at The Salk Institute, La Jolla, Calif. in its architecturally famous courtyard with a view of the sea — interspersed with commentary from the composer.
