Music i s a universal language, transcending rules and regulations , age,
gender, and national boundaries . Musicians manage to ar ticulate our
emotions and feelings , not even necessari ly with words but with notes
and sounds . Some ar ti s t s resonate with more people than others , but

music , the world , and ultimately, ourselves .
At HOHNER , we l ive and breathe music . Which i s why we decided to
honor those ar t i s t s who capture our emotions in song, us ing a har-

Back in the 1820 s , Bohemian music ian Joseph Richter could s carcely
have imagined the impac t that his invention of a new, prac tical way
to tune harmonicas would have on the future of music . We’re cer tain -
ly thankful he came up with the idea. Although there are other poss i -
b le ways of tuning a diatonic harmonica , hi s s ys tem has become the
benchmark and s ti l l def ines the sound today.
Original ly conceived to al low for the combination of s imple chords
with s ingle note folk melodies , i t al so produces those uniquely beauti -
ful sounds with which the harmonica has been associated ever s ince.
The plaintive s l ide from one pitch to the nex t , the eerie wail of bent
notes that so per fec t ly capture s emotions that can’ t be expres sed
in words – without the diatonic harmonica , folk , b lues , and countr y
music wouldn’ t be the same.
Diatonic harmonicas don’ t jus t of fer a great way to feel the blues or
p lay lonesome countr y songs . These ver sati le ins truments have al so
found their place in rock , pop, soul , and jazz and their unique sound
has been success fully integrated into many contemporar y s t yles such
as hip -hop, beatboxing, or even elec tronic dance music such as techno
and house.

Music is the s trongest way of ar ticulating emotion. A combination of
craf ts , it paints pic tures with sound and lends melody to words . I t was
the desire to expand the musical range of the diatonic that led HOHNER
to develop the chromatic harmonica over 100 years ago, thus revolu-
tionizing the instrument.
Until then, harmonicas were tuned to a single scale, l ike the white keys
on a piano. But HOHNER had the vision of playing music in all keys on
just one harmonica, by incorporating two sets of diatonic reeds tuned
a semitone apar t into one ins trument and switching bet ween them
at will . Suddenly all the missing notes were available at the touch of a
button! This opened up a whole new range of musical possibilities , which
took the s imple harmonica from the campfire to the concer t s tage at
a s troke.
Today, it is a favorite not just for classical music , but also for jazz, pop,
and blues .
